eeping fit and active has never been easier for mums-to-be in Doncaster with the new Aquanatal session at The Dome.

Specialist Healthy Lifestyle Midwives, Carolyn Garland and Alison Williams have been working with Doncaster Public Health and the Doncaster Culture Leisure Trust, who run The Dome, to promote the benefits of exercise during pregnancy.

Carolyn said: “Exercise is good for you and your baby. Our aim is to give pregnant women the confidence to start gentle exercise to improve their own health. The more active and fit they are during pregnancy the easier it will be for them to cope with labour and get back into shape after the birth.”

If you live in Doncaster and interested in trying the Aquanatal session, please ask your midwife for details. Alison and Carolyn are planning a similar scheme in the Bassetlaw area.

The power of creative arts to improve dementia care T

rying different approaches and new ways to improve the care and experiences of patients with dementia has always been a key goal of the Mallard Ward team at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

Earlier this year Rod Kersh, Consultant in Medicine for Older People, enlisted the creative power of a group called ‘Understanding Arts’ to show how painting, puppetry, singing and other arts can improve dementia care.

Rod said: “We know that activity groups can help people with dementia and their carers to stay socially connected and to enjoy a better quality of life. The Understanding Arts group take this concept a step further and have been training our staff to use creative art techniques and tools to bring real benefits for patients with dementia.”

The Mallard Ward’s dementia-friendly features offers patients a hospital experience that as closely as possible mirrors being at home. The ward has pictures and clocks and its dining room and kitchen encourages patients to move away from their

beds and socialise together. Having trained staff who know how to use creative skills to build a strong supportive social setting that fosters wellbeing, is an added bonus for patients and their families.

Director of Understanding Arts Matthew Laurie said: “We deliver person centred arts and mindfulness work and the heart of the approach is about developing relationships with people who have a communication disability or who are in the early stages of communication development. Here in the Mallard Ward we are working with people with dementia. Patients join in singing the songs and it lifts their spirits. We encourage patients to tell their stories through paintings, sand pictures and puppets – it is a highly practical and effective approach to starting meaningful two way conversations.”

Smoke free hospitals launch We asked local children across Doncaster and Bassetlaw to help us with our smoke-free hospitals launch by entering our poster competition with the winning designs being displayed around our hospitals.

Over 80 Doncaster youngsters got creative and designed fantastic posters.

The eight winners were announced at a prize giving ceremony on 1 June at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. Richard Parker, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality attended to present certificates and prizes. All eight winners received family passes for Doncaster Dome Leisure Centre.

Freya Jones, aged 7, was chosen as the overall competition winner and received a family pass for the Yorkshire Wildlife Park. You can hear Freya as the voice of our speaker system, delivering no-smoking messages at the hospitals main entrances.

All eight winning posters have been turned into hospital signs and are displayed on the main corridor of DRI’s East Block and also near Bassetlaw Hospitals dining room.

uring 2014/15 there have been a number of important developments at the Trust, and we have made some significant improvements to the quality and sustainability of our services. The vision, mission, values and strategic themes of our strategic direction ‘Looking Forward To Our Future’ have been central to our work throughout.

Provide the safest, most effective care possible We improved performance in a number of key quality indicators, including: • 36% reduction in Clostridium Difficle • 27% reduction in falls and 37% reduction in serious falls • 18% reduction in serious incidents • 36% reduction in severe pressure ulcers.

We revised our approach and how we listen to patients, to improve the

We’ve introduced a new Quality Assurance Tool (QAT) that helps us to review the standard of care we provide. The tool brings together patient surveys, staff surveys, matron ward rounds and a programme of activities that assess all aspects of safety and quality of care.

Focus on innovation for improvement We launched the DBH2020 programme to deliver organisation wide change, improve performance, build capacity and future proof services. Projects we will deliver in 2015/16 include a new website and intranet, ambulatory care, and emergency surgery pathways. iHospital is our ambitious programme of projects which support staff to use Information Technology (IT) better to support clinical decision making and release time to care. In the last year the programme has achieved a number of key milestones including the Symphony system going live in our Emergency Department, K2 maternity system upgrades, implementing iPads in

a thriving research culture with a focus on improving patient care, encouraging innovations and promoting excellence. In 2014/15 we recruited 3757 patients into research studies, of which 766 were recruited to National Institute for Health Research portfolio studies.

In 2015/16 the roll out of the telecommunications system replacement and upgrade will be completed. Other major projects that will go live in 2015/16 include a new Patient Administration System, electronic whiteboards, electronic observations, medical records scanning and outpatient self check-in kiosks. These projects will transform how we work in the hospital, releasing more time to care, and will also improve access for patients to our services.

The Integrated Discharge Team won the regional Outstanding Collaborative leadership Award and went on to win the national prize.

Spotlight on Montagu’s Minor Injuries Unit

G

ot a minor injury? Then head over to the Minor Injuries Unit (MIU) at Montagu Hospital.

Located in Mexborough the unit’s emergency nurse practitioners can assess and treat a wide range of minor injuries including, minor burns and scalds, infected wounds, sprains, cuts and grazes. They can also examine and treat minor injuries to the eye, ear and arrange X-rays for possible fractures.

Maisie Grierson, Emergency Nurse Practitioner in the Minor Injuries Unit at Montagu Hospital, said: “Many people with minor injuries automatically head for the busy Emergency Department, not realising

that they can normally be seen and treated quicker by visiting the Minor Injuries Unit here in Mexborough.

“By choosing to come to Montagu Hospital it frees up staff in our busy Emergency Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary to treat patients with more serious injuries who need urgent care.

However we cannot see children under the age of one year and they should always be taken to an Emergency Department in the first instance.”

The unit is open from 9am-9pm seven days a week (except for Christmas Day) and no appointment is required.

The unit’s staff treat around 60-80 patients every day for a variety of minor injuries from all parts of Doncaster including Carcroft, Armthorpe and Rossington and the neighbouring districts of Barnsley and Rotherham.

Although specialising in minor injuries the unit’s team of emergency nurse practitioners at can quickly assess and refer patients who arrive with complex fractures to the Emergency Departments at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Barnsley Hospital and Rotherham Hospital.

Montagu MIU

Online booking for diabetic eye screening appointments We’ve become one of only two places in England to offer an online booking option for diabetic eye screening appointments.

This new scheme is part of our aim to increase the number of younger people with diabetes attending their diabetic eye screening. The younger generation is renown nationwide for not attending screening appointments, putting them at highest risk of developing diabetic eye disease, which can damage eye sight or even result in sight loss.

The new interactive system has been designed to let patients make convenient appointments using computers, smartphones and tablets

while offering a wide choice of appointments over three screening sites (Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Vermuyden Centre in Thorne and Montagu Hospital).

Everyone with diabetes over the age of 12 will receive an annual invite to attend their screening appointment, in which they will be given a provisional appointment time. A link to the online booking system will be included in the letter and from there they will be able to reschedule their appointment to suit them.

The new system is available 24/7 and gives the option of evening appointments.

There’s nothing to fear from your smear W

e’re asking all eligible women aged 25-64 to take five minutes to do something which could save their lives – a smear test.

Research from the Health and Social Care Information Centre has shown that the number of women attending a screening across South Yorkshire has reduced. Across the UK, 1 in 5 women do not attend cervical screening invitation – this number rises to 1 in 3 women aged 25-29 years.

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw to take up their screening invitation and ensure they stay healthy.

“We know that many women don’t attend their appointment because of a range of

reasons including embarrassment, they are unsure of the process involved in screening, or because they are uncertain about what the test is for.

“Cervical screening is not a test for cancer, but a method of detecting abnormalities at an early stage in the cells within the cervix, giving a better chance of successful treatment before the cells can develop into cancer.”

All women aged 25 to 64 are eligible for a free cervical screening test every three to five years. If you’re aged between 25 and 49 you will receive an appointment every three years, aged 50 – 64 every five years and if you are 65+ you will only be screened if you haven’t had a smear test since the age of 50 or have had recent abnormal tests.

The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Screening team are re-launching the award winning ‘Fear or Smear’ cervical screening campaign, originally commissioned by Barnsley Clinical Commissioning Group and delivered by Barnsley Council in 2014. The campaign targets women aged 25-29; the first age group to be invited and the least likely to attend, promotes myth busting messages to change the stigma attached to smear appointments.

Montagu Hospital link corridor opens The Montagu Hospital Comforts Fund have generously sponsored the building of a new link corridor at Montagu Hospital.

The Fund, established in 1948 and run entirely by volunteers, has donated £160,000 for the corridor.

Just over half the money donated had been left to the charity from the late Gordon Stables a Mexborough man. The remainder was raised from the proceeds of the charity’s Tea Bar at Montagu Hospital and from local people.

Nora Gill, Chairman of the Montagu Hospital Comforts Fund and former Clinical Nurse Manager at Montagu Hospital, said: “Now for the first time in the hospital’s history you can walk its full length without having to venture outside. Bringing comfort to patients and hospital visitors is our main aim and funding this new corridor is our greatest achievement and will be at Montagu forever.”

New Acute Medical Unit W

e’ve completed the first phase of our ambitious redevelopment to improve the quality of care and experience of very ill patients admitted to Doncaster Royal Infirmary in an emergency.

The new Acute Medical Unit (AMU) sees patients who have been referred by their GP and also takes patients transferred from the hospital’s Emergency Department.

The unit provides immediate and early treatment of adult patients with a variety of serious medical conditions which usually include heart problems, asthma, chest infection, other respiratory conditions, and older people with acute illness.

Jacqueline Crossland, Matron in the AMU, said: “We are extremely proud of the new unit which creates the perfect setting to provide patients who are very unwell with the most appropriate care. It is a busy unit and it is very surprising on how the design and layout makes a great difference to the way

we care for patients – everything flows so much easier now.”

Patients are seen by a team of specialists ranging from acute medical consultants, senior doctors and nurses who can quickly assess and treat patients. The unit plays an essential role in reducing the number of times a patient is moved between wards and better access to senior doctors.

The first phase has seen the creation of a bright and modern ward that consists of 19 beds in a layout that includes seven single bedded rooms with ensuite facilities and four bays each with three beds and ensuite facilities. A welcome addition to the unit is its new reception, manned by ward clerks and volunteers, who act as a focal point to greet patients and visitors and deal with the ward administration.

The second phase of the AMU has started and will see the redevelopment of the unit’s remaining 24 beds and Ambulatory Care section.

Meet the AMU volunteers Volunteers David Holland and Judith Brown both work on the Acute Medical Unit’s new reception at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

David works two days from 9.00am to 4.00pm and Judith does one morning a week.

David said: “I worked at DRI since leaving school, then moved into teaching and when I retired, I came back.

“The new reception is very busy. I enjoy it and it brings a purpose to my day.

It is social thing too; I get chatting to the patients and meet lots of people.

I like to put them at ease and help them to find their way around. I deliver patient notes and take referrals, so I move around the hospital a lot. The staff are a good bunch to work with – I wouldn’t come otherwise.”

Judith Brown has also been a volunteer at DRI a number of years before moving to the Acute Medical Unit reception.

She said: “A friend of mine volunteered here and she enjoyed it. I wanted to do something worthwhile when I retired and became a volunteer. I am very glad I did. I like to meet and greet people. I answer the phones and assist the ward clerks. Volunteering is a commitment but I thoroughly enjoy it and would recommend it to anyone.”

Breast screening campaign T

wo Bassetlaw women are championing a local breast screening campaign after breast cancer was detected during their routine mammogram appointments.

Lianne Stones, 52, of Gateford near Worksop and 58 year old Frances Ludditt of Whitwell, came forward following an appeal by the Trust to find women to help raise awareness of the importance of women over 50 going for their mammogram.

Lianne attended her mammogram in February last year and has recently undergone treatment after the screening found a lump.

Lianne said: “I went for screening after receiving my first invitation in the post. I had no signs or symptoms and no idea anything was wrong.

“I couldn’t be more thankful that I went for the mammogram when I did, attending the appointment made sure my cancer was picked up early, giving me the best chance to beat the disease.”

Frances was also encouraged to be the face of the campaign because of her own personal experience with breast cancer. Frances has been taking up her mammogram invitations since she was first offered an appointment at 50-years old.

Her third and latest mammogram detected a small lump on her breastbone which was removed in December 2013.

Frances said “I really want to express the importance of having a mammogram, it picked up my cancer long before I could have felt anything. My experience of screening has been very positive and all of the NHS staff who have helped me have been fantastic.”

Providing the safest care for our patients is our top priority and we pride ourselves on attracting high calibre nurses to come and work for us.

The national shortage of qualified nurses and the unprecedented demand for NHS services means that hospitals are relying more on temporary nursing staff to manage these competing pressures.

To put DBH in a good position for the busier winter period we recently undertook some international recruitment and have successfully hired 60 experienced nurses from the Philippines who will join us later in the year.

Appointing these nurses will be particularly helpful in filling the additional vacancies created by our continued investment in the nursing workforce while reducing our reliance on temporary staff.

Richard Parker, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Quality said: “Our international recruitment strategy has been very successful and we will be excited to welcome 60 experienced nurses from the Philippines just before the busier winter period. The nurses were selected through face to face interviews so that we could make sure they had not only the skills, but also the values to match those here.

“We’re delighted they’ve chosen DBH as their hospital of choice. I’m confident everyone across the Trust will join me in welcoming them and providing support through their transition and training period.”

Developing our leaders for the future

We’ve introduced a Future Leaders Development Programme with the purpose of:

• spotting and nurturing talent for the future • growing our own future leaders • embedding our values in all staff groups • engaging a different group of people in the future of the Trust.

The programme links to our We Care values and includes a team-working exercise, mentorship, an assigned project based on development needs and management skills training. The teamworking exercise has a twist, as it includes a military field programme called the Strensall Executive Stretch.

Katie Leversedge, a medical secretary in the Urology Department, says: “I applied for a place on the programme when I saw an article in our staff newsletter calling for ‘all future leaders’. I was slightly nervous about the prospect of something new and difficult but this made me more determined to step out of my comfort zone and explore the opportunities that DBH has provided.

“I was apprehensive about the Strensall Executive Stretch. I struggle with confidence sometimes but I really feel like this event changed that. I loved the entire weekend and feel like I have come back to work/home a different person. The focus was completely about team work and not individual satisfaction or completion. I have mental and physical strengths that I was totally unaware of. In my current job, I tend to like to lead from the front and do everything myself. I have changed my perception of what being a leader actually means. This course taught us about team work, how to delegate, how

to listen to your team and how to be a strong leader. You can get so wrapped up in achieving well yourself but if you don’t support your team and they don’t support you, you are likely to fail.

“here at DBH, we have a team of people who are interested in encouraging their staff to progress within their career.”

Another participant, Mark Lester, Care Group Information Analyst, says: “The Strensall Executive Stretch was a positive, lifechanging experience for me. Beforehand, we were all slightly anxious about being put into groups with people we did not know and given tough physical and mental challenges to complete.

“As we all progressed through the Executive Stretch though, we found that we could take on the unknown challenges and grew in confidence hour by hour to work as a team with complete strangers to achieve whatever was thrown at us.

“Having completed the Executive Stretch now, I feel that I have gained self-confidence and an ability to face any challenge either by myself or as a team, helping and supporting anyone that requires it along the way. These could well be the three days that have changed my life.”

Hickleton Golf Club hosts AAA screening event

T

he South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening team went to Hickleton Golf Club in May to screen the club’s senior members, aged 65 and above, for potentially life threatening abdominal aortic aneurysms.

The AAA team approached local golf clubs in the area to offer this free service to their members and Hickleton Golf Club was eager to get involved. On the day 23 men were screened; including club member, Frank Tarmey of Doncaster. Frank had the quick and non-invasive ultrasound, which came back with a normal result.

Frank said: “I’m so glad the AAA team held the screening event at Hickleton Golf Club, I had the scan and it was quick and easy, no trouble at all. I feel it’s my duty to have the screening done so that I can be around for my family. I would encourage all men aged over 65 to contact the screening team and get booked in; it only takes a matter of minutes.”

AAA’s occurs when the aorta, which is the main blood vessel in the body, becomes weak and expands which can lead to a rupture and potentially death due to internal bleeding. Around 3,000 people die every year from ruptured AAAs. Men over 65 who have not previously been screened can make an appointment by contacting the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw AAA Screening Programme on 01709 321189 or by emailing dbh-tr.dbhaaa@nhs.net.

Clean hands save lives Every year on the 5th May we support World Hand Hygiene Day and promote the message that ‘clean hands save lives’.

We encourage staff, patients and visitors alike to wash their hands to protect vulnerable patients from developing infections.

For staff, this involves following the 5 moments of hand hygiene which shows when hands should be washed. New CDU for Bassetlaw A new unit, providing assessment and treatment for patients attending the Emergency Department, opened at Bassetlaw Hospital on 7 July.

The Clinical Decision Unit is situated alongside the Emergency Department and has four beds – two single bays and one double bay, four comfortable reclining armchairs, toilets and shower

facilities. The unit is bright and modern and has a dementia friendly environment in an area away from the busy main department.

Earthquake that shook the Himalayas Yuvraj Agrawal, a trauma and orthopaedic doctor at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. After the devastating earthquake in Nepal he went out and offered his help to the Nepalese people – here is his account of what happened.

O

n 25 April 2015, I woke up to status updates on Facebook about a strong earthquake that had struck Kathmandu, Nepal just a few minutes earlier. It didn’t take very long to realise the power of the earthquake and scale of the damage with the reports on international media. We all now know that the earthquake was one of the strongest to hit the region in 80 years with 7.9 on Richter scale, and claimed 9,000 lives and have left thousands seriously injured and homeless.

After about 24 hours of the news, I gathered enough courage to go out and help the victims of this terrible natural disaster, realising that my services as an Orthopaedic surgeon could come handy and announced it to my friends, family and employers. I was completely blown away by the response and support I received from everybody. I am very

The scenes of devastation were soul destroying but I found courage in the smiles in the beautiful and strong people of Nepal.

Seventeen days later, what happened next will remain with me for the rest of my life.

While operating on a complex foot injury under spinal anaesthesia the operating theatre started shaking violently. It was the second major earthquake, 7.3 Richter scale and lasted 43 seconds but felt like forever. Everybody left the operating room; the only ones left were the scrub nurse, me and the patient who was paralysed from the waist down. My scrub nurse and I decided that we were not leaving the patient on her own. The patient was awake knowing well that she could not move her legs, laid there looking at me which gave me strength.

I have returned home and working in my busy schedule but cannot help thinking of the people still suffering with their illnesses and the aftermath of two major earthquakes.

New nonexecutive director

Philippe Serna has joined our Board as a Non-Executive Director.

Philippe, 51, who lives in South Kyme in Lincolnshire, is a qualified chartered accountant with over 25 years’ experience in finance. He has worked through his own company as a senior consultant to blue chip companies and other organisations in Europe and the UK since 2003.

Throughout his career he has gained a wealth of experience at director level in finance and management and has expertise in risk management, process design, control and Philippe Serna audit.

Commenting on his new appointment, Philippe said: “I am delighted to be a member of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals’ Board. The Trust is a very successful organisation and I am looking forward to contributing to its continued development as a leading provider of health services.”

Governor Elections Elections were held for governor seats in the Doncaster and Bassetlaw public constituencies.

Three nominations were received for the three available seats in the Doncaster Public constituency and the following candidates were elected unopposed: • Bev Marshall • Nicola Hogarth • Philip Beavers.

We received five nominations for the one Bassetlaw Public governor seat.

The outcome ballot will be announced on 17 August 2015, with the successful candidate starting in post on 22 September.

Governor Summary Governors have been involved in a range of work over the last few months. The Health and Care of Adults sub-committee received a presentation from the Doncaster Integrated Discharge Team while the Health and Care of Young People subcommittee discussed child safeguarding.

Both committees also looked at the new Care Quality Commission inspection standards and framework. Governors have also worked with the nursing team in relation to plans for governors to support the Quality Assurance Toolkit process by sponsoring wards.

At its quarterly meetings in April and June, the Board of Governors appointed Philippe Serna as a new Non-executive Director and discussed the staff survey, mortality, overseas nurse recruitment and the Montagu Hospital rehabilitation centre alongside the usual standing item reports.

A Governor Timeout was held in June and the agenda covered health and wellbeing, medical education, the new Quality Assurance Toolkit for wards and departments, and the iHospital programme.

Yes since 1977 I’ve been an Apple computer geek. I have a collection of vintage Apple computers including a 1979 Apple Europlus II and one of the first Apple Macs sold in the UK. In 2012 I fulfilled a lifelong ambition to visit Silicon Valley and the Apple HQ in Cupertino, California. This obsession with Apple computers has helped me to create databases, develop and host websites and write manuals. I’m learning to develop Apps for the iPad and iPhone.

You’re a former dentist, aren’t you?

Yes I was NHS dental practitioner in Doncaster from 1969-2001. I worked in Orthodontics at DRI as a clinical assistant and then became a dental practice advisor for Doncaster and Lincolnshire. I was also clinical director for Danum Dentists out-of-hours emergency service and clinical director Dearne Valley Dental Access Centre.

Why did you become a governor?

A patient asked me what I’d planned to do in my retirement and mentioned the public governor role. I attended a governors’ meeting and thought my NHS experience would be of use. I applied and was successfully elected.

Tell us about your role You get the opportunity to seat on various sub-committees. I’m a member of the Communications, Engagement and Membership committee and we look at ways to communicate better with all our members. We also scrutinise our current membership to see if it is reflective of the local population. It’s an interesting role.

History Matters

An Outpatients Department at last: DRI, 1935

t will come as a surprise to many readers that when the Thorne Road Infirmary was opened on 29 June 1930, it offered no outpatient facilities.

Construction of the new buildings during the previous three years had been fraught with financial problems, and the grandiose scheme submitted in 1925 by the hospital’s architects was severely curtailed. Despite the obvious inefficiencies that would result from having to maintain a service on two sites, the Board of Governors had no alternative but to continue to treat outpatients at the old infirmary in Wood Street for almost another five years.

Conditions there were described as “almost disgraceful”. In a miserable dungeon-like basement, draughty, ill-lit and approached via a steep slope, patients sat in a cramped and crowded waiting area, to be seen eventually in unhygienic ante-rooms offering little comfort or privacy. £35,000 was the sum deemed necessary to provide and equip the new accommodation.

Despite the industrial problems of the time, an intense fundraising campaign was launched and local industries, particularly the mineworkers, rallied round. In time, enough money was raised to begin the work, and after a remarkably short building period of 16 weeks, Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s new outpatient department was opened on 26 February 1935 by Mr William Humble, Managing Director of the largest colliery in the district.

The new premises were state-of-the-art, yet were built with an eye to future expansion.

Much thought had been given to privacy, efficiency, comfort and versatility. The reception area led to a large, well-lit and pleasantly decorated waiting hall with a refreshment

buffet. Special accommodation for ear, nose and throat, massage, dental and casualty patients was provided.

The new X-ray department, designed by Consultant Radiologist Dr Henry Miller, was the pride of the hospital and was fitted out with the latest equipment to offer both diagnostic and therapeutic facilities. Working at 200,000 volts, with lead-lined doors and walls treated with barium sulphate to prevent radiation damage to the rest of the department, it was claimed that there was “not the remotest possibility of the patient or operator receiving a shock”. An interesting feature of the new department was the “sunlight department”, where artificial sunlight treatment was given to children who were deemed in need of it.

Plaster room, dispensary, operating theatre, venereal diseases department and a mortuary with viewing chamber were all included within the new building. Described as “one of the finest and best equipped departments in the country” and “worthy of Doncaster”, the new outpatient facilities were a far cry from the terrible conditions that patients had endured for so long at Wood Street.

During the past 80 years, much has changed in outpatient care. The hospital has grown out of all recognition from those early days, and with it the various outpatient specialties. The 1935 outpatient department is now occupied almost exclusively by the Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation departments.
