Welcome As we head towards the end of 2018 – where has the year gone? It’s been busy and exciting for the fundraising office - here’s a quick recap. In February, we reached our minimum fundraising target of £8.5milllion for the new Dyson Cancer Centre. Six months later, we hit the £9million mark and still going strong, another significant milestone for this pioneering Cancer Centre in the South West. The campaign to help build a new RNHRD and Therapies Centre also continues, strongly backed by those wanting to double the value of their donation under the Brownsword Challenge. In July, we celebrated 70 years of the wonderful NHS, and launched four new Special Appeals in our official countdown to our 20th anniversary (June 2019). Thanks to the support from our local paper, the Bath Chronicle who have highlighted our Special Appeals, we’ve so far had £235,000 donated (for Breast Unit, Critical Care, Facial Surgery and Dementia). These Special Appeals continue - see page 5 where you’ll read about the Facial Surgery and Orthodontics Appeal - just backed with a further £100,000 from the Medlock Charitable Trust to fund our ‘Space to Smile’ Challenge which will again double the value of your donations. The public’s support is urgently needed as the new department is due to open in March. We had our biggest crowd at this year’s Movie by Moonlight and I would like to say a huge thank you to those who made a donation, including companies who sponsored and helped the event happen. Another success was our RUH Will Month

Tim Hobbs Head of Fundraising

scheme (each September) so popular that appointments with participating solicitors were booked by the middle of the month! Other good news came in the form of the RUH being rated Good by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), following an inspection in June 2018. And as we go to press, all 82 Minerva’s Owls of Bath are readying for auction, where 70% of the profits will be donated to the Cancer Centre and Therapies Centre. For the latest Owl News, check out minervasowls.org. Before signing off, I want to take this opportunity to say that every penny raised, every event, every hour volunteered really does make a huge difference to patients and their families at the Royal United Hospitals Bath – thank you for your support.

Tim Hobbs Head of Fundraising We want to say a huge thank you to Minerva's Owl of Bath, as at the time of going to press almost £140,000 was raised at the Minerva's Owls of Bath auction for four Bath charities, including The Forever Friends Appeal. We will receive 70% of the proceeds from the auction so check out our website for more details.

Spotlight on: Facial Surgery & Orthodontics Unit Special Appeal – fundraising £200,000+ Did you know? • Every day the department sees about 50 patients • Around 9,900 new patients are treated in this department each year • The staff are experts in conditions of the face, mouth and jaw • They look after patients with complex medical problems.

Why we need your help The RUH is relocating the Facial Surgery and Orthodontics Unit to make way for the new Cancer Centre and further improve the services it provides. But this transformation comes at a cost - £2.8m, and with an approximate 90% / 10% partnership between the NHS and charitable funding sources, The Forever Friends Appeal is raising a minimum of £200,000 towards this total.

How can you help? Support is urgently needed as the new department is due to open in March 2019.

Patient Story: Luke Beaver Luke started to feel really unwell one day, but didn’t think too much of the lump he had felt on his face for the previous few weeks. After just 24 hours the lump had swollen to such a size it was making breathing difficult. He was rushed to the RUH and admitted under the care of the Facial Surgery Team. Luke underwent emergency surgery to drain an infection in his neck and to protect his airway.

To help us reach our minimum target, the Medlock Charitable Trust is backing this Special Appeal by donating £100,000 to fund our ‘Space to Smile’ challenge that will double your donation to help us raise the minimum £200,000 needed to enhance what the NHS can provide. There are many ways you can help: • Make a single donation using the form on page 20 • Set up a direct debit • Fundraise with your family and friends or work colleagues He recovered in Intensive Care and spent a total of three weeks in the RUH before being discharged. He had this to say of the experience: “The Facial Surgery and ICU teams and the staff on Pulteney Ward were absolutely brilliant. The care and consideration they showed towards me was so important. When I come for check-ups I still get staff stopping me to ask how I am – which is really nice to know people cared about me.”

Therapies Matter With the construction of the new RNHRD and Therapies Centre making good progress, we are calling for support to help raise the final £250,000 of charitable funding needed to ensure the success of this major build that’s taking place at the Royal United Hospitals Bath. Due to open in 2019, the new RNHRD and Therapies Centre will bring the hospital’s therapies, rheumatology and pain services together under one roof and will treat up to 25,000 patients per year who are either recovering from a serious illness, injury or learning how to manage a long-term condition. We’re raising a minimum of £2million towards the cost of this building and our Therapies Matter campaign shares real life stories from patients to highlight how they benefitted from therapies and how important they are. With benefactor Andrew Brownsword pledging a gift of £1million, all other donations up of the value of £1million will be matched. Bath resident Sophie who’s featuring in our campaign said: “After sustaining sports-related injuries in 2004, I was in constant, chronic pain, extremely fatigued, and subsequently diagnosed with Fibromyalgia in 2006. I joined the Fibromyalgia Self-management Programme at

the RNHRD and learnt strategies to manage the pain, which enabled me to study for an Open University degree and I achieved my lifetime goal in 2017, gaining a BSc (Hons) Psychology degree just before my 60th birthday!”

Over £9million raised for new Dyson Cancer Centre Thanks to the continued support and goodwill from the public over £9million has been raised for the new Dyson Cancer Centre, due to be built at the Royal United Hospitals Bath in 2019. Tim Hobbs, Head of Fundraising, said: “I would like to personally thank everyone for their support and contributions. Fundraising in the fight against cancer never stops, and as we enter our 20th year of fundraising for the RUH we will continue to support this amazing project to achieve the very best care, treatment and quality of environment for our patients.”

A giant

for patients

We would like to say a great big Newfoundland dog-sized thank you to the 30 amazing fundraisers who took part in our Newfoundland Dog Dive on 22 September. Not only did they take the plunge into Portishead Marina (when the water is pretty cold at this time of year) to raise money for our patients, they also braved it during the rainiest day we’ve had in months – but all that didn’t matter as we had the best lifeguards on duty that day! The fundraising is still coming in, but we are thrilled that over £5,500 has already been raised for a variety of wards, departments and campaigns across the hospital. We are hugely grateful to the wonderful team at Newfound Friends UK (of the furry variety and their humans) who made this event possible.

We will be holding the Dog Dive again in 2019, so if you’d like to be the first to know about it, please get in touch and email: forever.friends@nhs.net.

Canyons trek supports patients back home

In one week, our amazing trekkers explored some of the most magnificent natural wonders of the world - the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon and Zion Canyon National Parks. Not only was this a huge physical challenge for the group, they also spent months fundraising, collecting sponsorship from their friends, colleagues and families and even planned a food and drinks festival to raise sponsorship to take part in this challenge. Thanks to them, £6,000 will go towards our Cancer Care Campaign. Trekker Diana Dixon said: “This trek was about challenges. It tested my fitness levels, but I wanted to continue my lifetime mission of raising money for people living with cancer, in memory and in respect of those who have suffered including my own sister Christine, who lost her life to the disease and my nephew, who lost his mother. I also wanted to do this to thank the RUH and its staff for its brilliant quality of care. This has been my way of supporting my local community by contributing towards the building of an amazing new cancer centre.” Clare Avenell, who started raising money for the new cancer centre just over two years ago, took on the Appeal’s trek to Peru challenge last year and also trekked

alongside Diana through the canyons. She said: “The trip was amazing and at every turn there was a camera moment and views you just can’t explain - I can’t quite believe we walked it all in a week. Walking through the Grand Canyon has always been on my bucket list so when I saw the trip advertised I decided to do it.”

Our next planned trek is to the Great Wall of China in October 2019. If you are interested in this charity challenge, come to our information evening on 31 January 2019. To book your place visit our website or contact Maddy on 01225 825823, email: maddy.jones@nhs.net

Fantastic festival fundraising Why I organised a fundraising event in memory of my dad - by Gary Cook. “When my father (pictured right) was suffering from cancer he was looked after more than words can even explain – the staff in the RUH’s Oncology Unit are amazing. “It is all about the beginning, middle and end of your treatment. From when he was first given the diagnosis, the way

that they talked to my dad to us his family and how they look after you was just fantastic. They really cared for my dad every step of the way through his treatment. That’s why we are thrilled to have raised money in his memory for the new Cancer Care Centre. “With the help of all of my friends at Trowbridge and District Metal Detecting Club, sponsors, land owners and close friends and family, we organised The Rodney Cook Memorial Rally just outside Cirencester. From the ticket sales and raffle over £27,000 has been donated to the Cancer Care Campaign.”

Box Rocks to support our Therapies Matter campaign This year’s Box Rocks Festival raised £2,818.36 for our Therapies Matter campaign. Dean Creighton, Landlord of the Queen’s Head Inn, where the festival is held, said: “We chose the Therapies Campaign this year to ensure the development and sustainability of our local hospital. We are a large community here in Box and have seen many people use the services of the RUH. To have a new therapies centre that ensures the essential nurturing recovery, treatment and management of long-term conditions of our community is of the upmost importance to us.” 12

www.foreverfriendsappeal.co.uk

This year marked 25 years of Box Rocks Music Festival and 15 years of raising money for The Forever Friends Appeal, seeing over £40,000 raised for the Appeal. Claudia Hickin, Senior Community Fundraiser said: “We are so grateful for the continued support from Dean and the Box Rocks Festival fans. Their generosity has helped fund our major campaigns including the new Cancer Centre and previously the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, as well as new equipment for wards and departments at the RUH.”

Fantastic support from young people in our community In this issue, we wanted to highlight how people of all ages in our communities have come together to support our Appeal. It’s thanks to the generosity made by these groups of young people that we are able to make a difference to patients, their families and staff at the RUH.

Corsham School’s fancy dress fun run At the end of term, the whole of Year 7 at The Corsham School completed a 1500m sponsored fancy dress fun run - a whole host of fun costumes were created by students and tutors alike. An amazing £2,131.60 was raised for charities across the UK, £1000 of which has been donated towards the Dyson Cancer Centre at the RUH. Ms Fairbairn, Year 7 Learning Manager, said “I am extremely proud of my students. Thank you to everyone who sponsored our students, but most of, thanks to students themselves who finished their first year at The Corsham School in spectacular style whilst helping those less fortunate.”

Warminster Sing-a-long The show really did go on at St George’s Catholic Primary School in Warminster, where they raised £155 from a school sing-a-long to The Greatest Showman. The school have chosen to donate their fundraising to our Cancer Care Campaign – thank you!

Girl Guides donates blankets to neonatal unit Members of the Westbury Girl Guides (all aged between 14 and 19) wanted to give something back to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the RUH to say thank for caring for one of the guides’ cousins who was born prematurely. The girls were told of blankets for newborns, so they started to make some to donate and presented them to the staff in NICU. Kirstie Flood, Lead Sister in NICU said: “We were delighted and very grateful to receive the quilts from the girl guides. Each quilt has been beautifully made and our new mums and dads love them too.”

Bradford on Avon nursery fundraises for NICU Thank you Westview Day Nursery for raising £461.38 from cycling around the Victory field for the RUH’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. As we went to press they were preparing to take part in the Bradford on Avon Glow Run event to raise even more funds! Follow us on

Local Trust backs companion project As well as fundraising for major campaigns and new builds, we also explore opportunities with trusts and foundations where there is a real synergy with our aims to fund specialist medical equipment and innovative projects. In October, we were awarded close to £80,000 from The Sperring Trust to fund an innovative three-year pilot project designed to support end of life care at the RUH. Thanks to this significant grant, the Compassionate Companions Project will be delivered in partnership with RUH’s Palliative Care Team and Dorothy House Hospice Care. The funding will see a new companion support officer coordinate volunteers to provide companionship to patients during their last days or hours of life on the hospital wards. Helen Meehan, Lead Palliative and End of Life Care Nurse and Project Lead at the RUH, said: “We are so grateful to The Forever Friends Appeal for helping us obtain this funding and to the Sperring Trust for choosing to support this much needed companionship service for our patients. Caring for people nearing the end of life is one of the most important things we do in hospital, as well as 14

being able give respite support to patients’ families so that loved ones can recuperate during what is an emotionally and physically exhausting time. “Often the last sense patients lose during end of life care is their hearing and being able to provide a companion during their final days or hours - to read to them, provide comforting words or hold their hand - is very much the support these patients need at this time.” Michelle Jorden, Administrator of the Sperring Trust said: “The Trustees are very happy to support such a worthy project. Ralph left his estate in trust to benefit the local community and we are delighted to help make his wishes possible, as this project will have a big impact on so many people including those who live locally to where the Sperring Trust is based. We look forward to working with The Forever Friends Appeal.”

Forever in our hearts ‘Forever Funds’ are a special way for families and friends to pay tribute to loved ones, while supporting the Appeal to help transform patient care at the RUH. We caught up with three groups of friends and family who have taken on some tough challenges to raise money in memory of their loved ones.

3 Peaks Challenge completed in memory of Steve Nowell Congratulations Dave and Jason, who conquered Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike in memory of Dave’s brother, Steve Nowell, and for Bloodwse, a charity who helped Dave’s little boy. Dave said: “We did it in 22 hrs and 21 minutes! We summited Ben Nevis in the snow, Scafell Pike in darkness and Snowdon in cold winds. It

Footie for Kelly A friendly charity football match organised by staff at Cross Manufacturing has raised £2,270.46 in memory of hairdresser Kelly Ross. Craig Townsend said: “I know it’s only 90 minutes of football but it was a big thing for a lot of us as we haven’t played in a long time, but it was all worth it.”

was an adventure to remember and for two great causes. We are chuffed to bits that we completed the challenge raising over £3,000 with gift aid - so well worth the pain!”

A quick half for Phill McMinn Over £5,000 has been raised in memory of Phill McMinn, who at 47 sadly passed away after a long battle with cancer. Some of Phill’s friends and family took on the Bristol Half Marathon to raise funds for the new Dyson Cancer Centre. Paul, one of Phill’s friends said: “He received great treatment and support at the RUH and we want to remember him and say thank you to them. We started in the rain and finished in sunshine carrying a multitude of injuries. We have raised an incredible £5,581, which will make a real tangible difference to patients living with cancer and their families and is a positive way for us to remember Phill.”

Another fundraising event for Kelly’s Fund also took place when children’s football school, NMV Football saw players host an auction and raffle and raised £1,950. Kelly’s Forever Fund has now raised £17,697.90 for our Cancer Care Campaign.

overwhelmed by the generosity shown by our clients and staff and we would like to thank everyone including Bath Golf Club, the people who donated the raffle prizes and The Forever Friends Appeal for helping us organise the day.”

Redcliffe Homes Ltd donates £10,000 to RUH wards

Bath financial services company, Altus Consulting, has raised £5,660 for the RUH’s Children’s ward by holding a corporate Golf Day. The event took place on 21 September and involved 60 of Altus Consulting’s clients. Funds were raised through registration fees, a raffle, sales of ‘Mulligans’ and the opportunity to beat professional player Russell Covey. Martyn Evans, Head of Consulting, Altus Consulting said: “This is the first time we have used our corporate golf day to raise money for charity – we chose to raise funds for our local hospital as a colleague of ours had one of their twin girls born with a serious heart condition last year. When baby Clara was born, the RUH was instrumental in monitoring her condition. Clara has now undergone open heart surgery at another hospital but the RUH continues to monitor her progress and development. We have been 16

When Tom O’Connor, Managing Director of Redcliffe Homes Ltd was a patient at the RUH, he was keen to make a donation of £10,000 in support of his local hospital. Tom said: We are all very fortunate to have such an excellent NHS hospital close by. It’s not until you need their help that you realise what a gem we all have, and it’s available to all. I am extremely grateful to the hospital and staff for looking after me.” The donation from Redcliffe Homes will be split between our Critical Care Special Appeal - raising £150,000 towards the refurbishment of the unit, and the Cardiology and Respiratory wards.
