I’m hugely proud to be opening this issue of TOGETHER magazine with good news for all residents of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. As you know, the Government has announced £450m of capital investment over the next five years to complete our investment and reconfiguration plans.

This is great news for Leicester’s Hospitals.

Our thanks and remembrance also extends to Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha who we honour in this issue. He single-handedly made our Children’s Intensive Care Unit possible with his generosity, and through it we are able to ensure his legacy to community lives on.

Fundraising news...

In 2014, we found ourselves in the unfortunate position of having to close our children’s Play Roof space in Balmoral and in doing so taking away a space where children could just be children.

Five years later, thanks to a lot of hard work from our Trust’s amazing play specialists - and money from supporters - we have reopened it.

“We have a lot of long-term patients who don’t usually get to go outside of our hospital, so what a space like the play roof offers is huge, both to those children and for their families,” says play specialist Elisha Phillips.

“We’ve been working really hard to get it open, so we’re all delighted to see that hard work pay off so that these children can enjoy time with their families, and each other.”

Getting the Play Roof re-opened was only possible thanks to the combined efforts of the play specialists, the estates & facilities team and our charitable donors. An especially generous contribution came from

the Lorgat family, who raised and donated thousands of pounds towards renovating the Play Roof after their son received treatment for leukaemia on ward 27.

With the Play Roof up and running again, we’re already looking at how we can improve the experience of our patients in children’s hospital.

Currently we are working to secure funds to bring OPUS Music to our hospital to provide a fun music distraction for our younger patients.

We are also accepting more donations of toys from the public through our new charity hub.

Legacy of Khun Vichai Khun Vichai to be honoured with Children's Intensive Care Unit renaming.

Leicester Hospitals Charity proudly announces that both the Children’s Intensive Care Unit (CICU) in the Balmoral Building and the new Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at the Leicester Royal Infirmary will be designated ‘The Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha Children’s Intensive Care Unit’, in honour of the late Foxes chairman.

The tribute reflects the incredibly generous charitable donations from the LCFC chairman including a £2million donation towards Leicester Hospitals Children’s Hospital Appeal following the club’s historic Premier League title win in 2016.

Branch manager for our outpatient pharmacy, TrustMed, at Leicester Royal Infirmary Hello, my name is Claire Morrison and I am the branch manager for our outpatient pharmacy, TrustMed, at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Like many of my colleagues, I started my career as a counter assistant in a community pharmacy. This background in local community focused care is what I believe helps us to provide the friendly approachable service that TrustMed has become recognised for, in what is a clinical and sometimes daunting environment to patients.

Our diverse customer base means that we have to provide a varied service on a daily basis, whilst maintaining an efficient, trustworthy and safe service every time. None of this would be possible without the support and

drive of our TrustMed team, from the shop floor to the board room it is vital that we all have one vision - providing the best care to all of our service users.

My team initially came to work for the Trust in 2012, when Lloyds Pharmacy took over the outpatient pharmacy department. This was an exciting time for us as we accepted a new challenge and worked to become a trusted part of Leicester’s Hospitals.

In 2015/16 my team proudly received the Hospital based Pharmacy of the year award from Lloyds Pharmacy, which recognised all of the achievements we had made.

We have grown immensely since those initial days and now with the support of our superintendent pharmacist, board members and

colleagues we are pushing the boundaries of what outpatient pharmacy can deliver.

We strive to provide not only an impeccable service to the patients from within the hospital, but also to hospital staff across the Trust.

We have a huge role to play within a patient’s hospital journey. Sometimes we are the last stop and endeavour to make it a positive one. Other times we are a regular and familiar stage in a long and daunting course of treatment, which helps us build positive relationships and continue to provide a smooth, safe and great experience.

New clues

into family history of cancer found Four years ago, three sisters began a journey to find out why they developed breast cancer within 15 months of each other. Now, they have taken a huge step towards solving the puzzle, thanks to genetic testing.

Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer in November 2013, with sisters Kerry and then Sandra following suit. Three other relatives in the family have also had cancer, including their mother.

Sandra said: “There are seven of us siblings. You just think, ‘who is going to be next?”’

Standard genetic testing of the most common genes linked with breast cancer, BRCA1 and BRCA2, had proved inconclusive. So, the sisters agreed to be among the first patients with cancer to take part in the national 100,000 Genomes Project, which was set up to sequence the genomes of patients affected by a rare disease or cancer.

The genome is the genetic ‘blueprint’ that codes how your body is built and repaired throughout your life.

Through sequencing their genomes, Mary and Sandra were found to have a specific change in the PALB2 gene, which is linked with a significant increase in the risk of developing breast cancer. Kerry does not carry the altered gene but still developed breast cancer.

A fourth sister, Bethan, has since been tested. She doesn’t have breast cancer, but she is a carrier of the gene. She said: “I was devastated. However, my children can now be tested because I’m a carrier.”

Mary said: “Now they have identified the altered PALB2 gene it means the hospital can test our extended family and then, if necessary, they can intervene at a much earlier stage to prevent cancer from developing.”

The treatment options range from extra screening to spot early signs of the disease, to undergoing preventative surgery.

Dr Julian Barwell consultant in clinical genetics at Leicester’s Hospitals, supported the family through their diagnoses. He said: “The findings help explain a great deal about why this family had such high levels of breast cancer.

“It also suggests that families with a history of breast cancer who have had negative results with BRCA1 and BRCA2 could consider testing for PALB2.”

Dr Barwell sounds a note of caution before patients agree to genetic testing.

He explains: “It’s really important that people take the time to consider whether they want to go through this type of test.

Once you get the results, you can never go back and un-know them.”

For now, the sisters remain upbeat.

Sandra reflects: “I’d rather know than not know. The value of this information to our family can’t be overstated. Yes, I think it’s unfair that we’ve been through this, but if they’re the cards you’re dealt with you’ve got to get on with it and try to stay positive.”

Developing treatments Professor Jacqui Shaw, Director of Leicester Precision Medicine Institute, a partnership between Leicester’s Hospitals and the University of Leicester, said: “In the future, research like this will help us develop treatments that can target the weaknesses in the tumour that develop due to this gene change.

To get to that point will require us to sequence the genomes of more tumours and then develop and test new medicines through clinical trials.

“If we can give a medicine that targets the specific tumour of the individual patient, we could reduce side-effects and unnecessary treatments and enable more people to live longer, healthier lives.”

Two Leicestershire couples have been able to reserve their first homes far earlier than planned, thanks to Midlands housebuilder Mulberry Homes and its recently launched Key Workers Scheme, which is available to staff from hospitals and doctors’ surgeries.

When Sam David (21) and Jessica May (20) visited the show home at Mulberry Homes’ Kingsbury Park development in Lutterworth, they didn’t imagine they would be in a position to reserve a Mulberry Home – or indeed any property – so soon.

With Sam currently living with his parents in Lutterworth and Jessica based in Daventry with hers, settling close to both families was essential for the couple. On visiting the show home, the couple’s desire to become Mulberry homeowners was confirmed and they reserved their two-bedroom Stanton home there and then.

The couple had been saving for their first home with the aid of a Lifetime ISA. Sam explained: “We hadn’t heard of Mulberry’s Key Workers Scheme until the Sales Advisors explained its advantages. Daniel Day, 26, a head chef from Loughborough, and his São Paulo-born girlfriend Stephanie Campos Geller, 23, had decided to settle in Lutterworth after hearing positive reports of the Leicestershire town’s transport links, atmosphere and community feel. With Stephanie recently starting a new teaching job in Northampton and Daniel living with his family in Loughborough, the couple felt that Lutterworth offered an ideal mid-point.

Having looked around the Kingsbury Park show home, the couple fell in love with the development and reserved their three-bedroom Beacon home shortly afterwards, with a move-in date of mid-November.

The couple had been saving for their first home together with the aid of a Help to Buy ISA, cutting back on luxuries in order to afford their deposit. Stephanie’s occupation as a teacher made the couple eligible for the Key Workers Scheme.

Daniel said: “The Key Workers Scheme’s contributions have saved us in the region of £3,500 and have gone towards our solicitors’ fees, flooring and a dishwasher!

“We found the Sales Advisors at Kingsbury Park really approachable from the start – their nopressure approach allowed us to go through the reservation process at our own pace and the team have kept us informed at every stage.

“We’d absolutely recommend Mulberry Homes to any first-time buyers, especially those who could benefit from the Key Workers Scheme.”

About Hope Hope Against Cancer is Leicestershire and Rutland’s local cancer research charity. We were established in 2003 to bring cutting-edge research to our area and make world-class clinical trials available to local people.

Our vision is to work for a future where more local people survive cancer. We do this by funding innovative research, which in turn leads to improved treatments and better outcomes for people with cancer. We work in partnership with local universities and hospitals, funding pioneering research to ensure that Leicestershire is hub of expertise in cancer research and treatment.

The Hope Clinical Trials Facility is a dedicated area in the Leicester Royal Infirmary for patients taking part in clinical research studies. We fund a Hope Research Nurse at the Facility, who adds to the care and support offered to patients taking part in clinical trials.

Why we need to expand?

Around 5,000 people in Leicestershire are diagnosed with cancer each year. Because of life-saving research, more people are now surviving cancer.

Evidence suggests that having an active research centre in a hospital providing cancer treatment, not only improves the standard of care for patients taking part in clinical trials, it also benefits those patients not currently eligible for a trial who are treated in the same hospital.

At the moment the Hope Clinical Trials Facility has over 5,000 patient attendances a year. People taking part in clinical trials can benefit from access to the latest medicines and treatments, the care of the Hope Research Nurse, and are treated in a warm and friendly environment.

This development will double the size of the facility, include state-of-the-art equipment while keeping the warm and caring atmosphere our patients value.

Celebr Jackie Redfern, Caroline Hind, Ann Egbokhan, Jane Barry, Christine Swanson and Karen Slater - Intensive Care, Glenfield Hospital When one of their colleagues, Fely, was diagnosed with a terminal illness, the day job didn’t end for the close knit team. Between them they visited Fely, ensuring she was never alone, and supported her daughter, the only family Fely has throughout her care. Their nominator said: “These ladies showed their commitment and compassion went beyond their daily roles and were there for their colleague and friend when it mattered most.”

The Colposcopy Team More than 200 women attended a Saturday drop-in clinic for a smear test after the colposcopy team's #Don’tFearTheSmear campaign. After they noticed a decrease in the number of women attending the cervical cancer screening test, they made it their mission to get more ladies tested.

The nomination said: “Hopefully this means that those women will not delay attending for their next smear test and will encourage their friends, sisters and daughters.”

Emergency Department Security Team On the night shift of 16/01/18 a visitor was stabbed on the approach to the walk-in reception area of the Emergency Department. The CCTV footage from the night shows the terrifying attack and ongoing rampage. The nomination said: “The staff working in that area acted quickly and bravely to evacuate the area within a matter of a few seconds to avoid any further serious injury of patients and visitors. All staff acted with such bravery, going above and beyond what is expected of them in their role, risking their own personal safety to deliver the safest outcome possible.”

Sarah Lockwood-Lee - Diabetes Education Application Project Co-ordinator Sarah has been instrumental in developing an app (Deapp) designed to help children with diabetes. Her nominator said: “She should be very proud of the world-wide interest the app is receiving. Sarah has multiple ideas to continue the growth and development of the app.”

Bharat Patel - Renal volunteer, General Hospital Bharat, whose wife donated her kidney to him, works tirelessly to promote organ donation. An avid fundraiser and volunteer for ten years, he researches current practices to ensure he knows the latest developments in the field. His nominator said: “He focuses on black and ethnic minority people who may have differing beliefs and talks to them from a patient perspective to help dispel concerns. There really is no end to this man’s commitment.”

Rahat Ahmed - Breastfeeding support volunteer, General Hospital, Highly commended Rahat helps mums express and teaches them how to hold their babies when feeding and supports them building a bond. Her nominator said: “Rahat talks to expectant mums about their unborn child and to new mums who have just had their baby. She has an outstanding commitment to her role as a volunteer. She is a great asset to the team.”

When a superbug broke out at Leicester’s Hospitals the microbiology clinical and laboratory team worked weekends and extra hours to prevent the spread. The team worked around the clock to get patients' test and screening results back, minimising the risk to other patients, family and care givers.

Their nominator said: “Colleagues worked tirelessly to manage the increased workload and also maintained all the microbiology services, often going above and beyond the normal expectations.”

Listening To Our Local

Somali Community This September, our patient and community engagement team organised a “Community Conversations” event in St Matthews, the heart of our local Somali community.

The evening gave our chairman, Karamjit Singh, and other Trust Board members the opportunity to hear first-hand how people from the Somali community found our hospital services. the Somali Children and Parent’s Association (SOCOPA) encouraged further engagement following this.

The most talked about topic of the night centred on how members of the community could better engage with Leicester’s Hospitals as an employer.

As a result, the patient and community engagement team are working with staff in the Trust to set up a dedicated community event which will focus on employment, training, volunteering and work experience opportunities.

Karl Mayes, head of patient & community engagement, said: “Events like these provide the Trust with vital information about the experience of using our hospitals. The conversations and relationships we have with local communities ensure our services are fair and accessible for all.

This is a key part of our quality improvement journey Becoming the Best.”

Leicester has one of the largest Somali populations in the UK with an estimated 20,000 Somali people living in the city.

Overall, most were happy with the care they received, but the provision of culturally appropriate food and chaplaincy support, access to interpreters and the quality of translated materials were all raised as areas for improvement.

Visveswaran Mallayan joined Leicester’s Hospital in 2015. He is research and innovation (R&I) business intelligence manager. He also has a very different role outside of work.

Inside What is your role inside the Trust?

I am research and innovation business intelligence manager at Leicester’s Hospitals. I support the head of research operations, director and deputy director of research and innovation. I also work closely with Clinical Research Network - East Midlands.

What do you enjoy most about working for Leicester’s Hospitals?

Leicester’s Hospitals is a very inclusive organisation where a wide range of people work together and provide outstanding service to patients.

I love working within the research and innovation department where we have a good management team and wonderful team players.

As an R&I team we have achieved a lot. I have been invited to present in multiple research conferences about our innovative ways of working, which created huge interest from other health organisations in the UK, Belgium, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. I was also recently invited as a speaker to the research symposium conducted by the Belgian Health Care Knowledge Centre.

What do you enjoy most about your role outside the trust?

My primary enjoyment is when I visit India with my family, taking my son to our farm. I also enjoy learning new techniques to conserve water in farming like hydroponic and aquaponics systems.

What is your role outside of the Trust?

Every year, I visit India for three weeks and satisfy my childhood unfulfilled ambition of becoming an orchard farmer by ploughing and irrigating my agricultural land.

We grow mainly long term crops like Mangos, Coconuts, Drum Sticks (Moringa Oleifera), Lemon and Pomegranate.

Last August, I saw some plants were dying due to drought, so I connected them to a drip irrigation method. My mom, who currently lives on the farm, sends me photos of the development of all the plants which makes me very happy.

Do you see any links between your work at Leicester’s Hospitals and farming?

Yes, farming is all about teamwork, attention to detail and needs immense coordination like our Trust.

What are your proudest achievements?

I volunteer as President of Leicester Tamil Community where we arrange cultural events three times a year.

Recently, we organised an event called “Bond with Britain”, where we invited a wide range of people from all walks of life, to share their experiences of living in Leicestershire and how we keep the Tamil culture alive in our community.

Also, I run a non-profit school in Tamil Nadu, India. We aim to provide all the necessary facilities to enhance pupil’s wisdom and guide them to be outstanding.

Improving Patient Safety Through Medicines Management Liz McKechnie, medication safety lead pharmacist, Catherine Taylor, medication safety pharmacy technician and medicine management nurses, Hannah Flint, Keeley Plimmer and Joanne Gilbertson cover all things medicines with a single goal, to improve patient safety.

To do this, since October 2017, the team have been undertaking medication safety audits on wards, out-patient areas, in theatres and anywhere medicines could be stored.

Alongside this, they look at medication incidents reported by staff and engage in reviews and actions to try and prevent future incidents from occurring.

And they are starting to see improvements in many areas.

SAM enables patients to maintain their independence by administering their own medication and insulin during admission in hospital.

The team also get involved in teaching student nurses, midwives and nursing associates, as well as communicating updates on medication issues to staff through regular bulletins.

Daxa, affectionately called Mrs Parmar dedicated 37 years of her work life to the NHS. Over the years she has worked as a secretary to a senior nursing officer in the Leicester City PCT, an audio typist, health visitor’s clerk and a cultural link worker.

In 2001 (18 years), Mrs Parmar was appointed as sickle cell and thalassaemia support officer.

Daxa went on to train as one of the few non-nurses sickle cell and thalassaemia counsellors in the country.

Due to her experience, she has supported and trained new nurses in the team with regards to how the service operates and use of SystmOne. Mrs Parmar’s language skills (Gujarati and Hindi) have been invaluable to the service. She makes herself available when needed to give information in the appropriate language freely, helping our hospitals save money from interpreting service providers.

Mrs Parmar runs her own Haemoglobinopathy Counselling Clinic where she provides counselling, advice and information to patients and families.

She raises awareness of sickle cell and thalassaemia in the community and has sessions with trainee health visitors, student nurses and midwives.

Your energy and enthusiasm will be dearly missed.

The haemoglobinopathy team and wider CHUGGS directorate would like to thank you for your hard work and valuable contribution to the smooth running of the service.

Pudsey visited ward 27 for Children In Need. It’s safe to say that everyone had the best time. Thank you Children in Need for funding PASIC fun respite activities for our young cancer patients.

Leanne, from the Better Care Together Internal Communications team, held a small Halloween bake sale with the HR team in aid of the UK Sepsis Trust.

They raised £62.50 on the day which Leanne will be matching. Well done to all involved.

We are very proud that our play services were chosen to host the National Play in Hospitals Week event which is the first time the event has been held outside of London. The team worked very hard organizing activities with the children and also planned a party for patients.
