Stephen Graves Welcome to the Autumn edition of Pulse magazine This will be my last column as Chief Executive of your local hospital Trust, before I retire and hand over to our new CEO, Caroline Walker. Caroline is our Deputy Chief Executive and Finance Director and will take over on 1 October 2018. I would like to wish her all the success in her new role. Read all about her appointment on page 3.

I first took up the role of Chief Executive for Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals in September 2014 and was proud to become the Chief Executive for the newlyformed North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust when it formed in April 2017 as a result of the merger between Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust. For the past four years it has been an enormous honour and privilege to work with such a talented and committed group of people who provide outstanding care and support to our patients and their families every single day.

I would like to thank our staff for their support while I have been Chief Executive and wish them well for the future.

Meet our new Chief Executive, Caroline Walker Caroline Walker takes up her role as Chief Executive for our Trust on 1 October 2018.

Caroline, who was previously Deputy Chief Executive/Finance Director for the Trust, succeeds Stephen Graves, who announced his retirement in May 2018.

In preparation for her new role, Caroline has been spending time shadowing a variety of teams across our three main hospital sites, Peterborough, Hinchingbrooke and Stamford, as well as our community hospital facilities at Ely and Doddington.

She said: “I am delighted and proud to be taking up this role. I felt it was important to remind myself of the work done by all the teams who play such a vital part in ensuring our hospitals continue to deliver excellent care. I was fortunate to be able to take some time over the summer to shadow teams across our sites. It’s a great way to see first-hand the challenges faced by our staff as they strive to deliver good patient care and experience.”

Trust chairman Rob Hughes said: “I am delighted to announce Caroline’s move into the Chief Executive role. Her service to our organisation has been exemplary, particularly her work to support the merger of our hospitals. I know I speak on behalf of the whole Trust board when I say we are looking forward to working with her.”

Caroline began working for Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in April 2013 when she joined as Finance Director and led the work to merge the Trust with Hinchingbrooke Health Care NHS Trust which culminated in April 2017 when North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust began operation.

Her career in finance within the NHS dates back to 1982 and has seen her work at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust, Great Ormond Street Hospital, Barts and the London NHS Trust. She has also been Chief Operating Officer at Loughborough University.

Consultant Paediatrician shortlisted for Women Leaders in Peterborough A Consultant Paediatrician at Peterborough City Hospital has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Public Service category for the Women Leaders’ Awards in Peterborough.

Dr Emilia Wawrzkowicz, Consultant Paediatrician and Designated Doctor for Safeguarding Children in Cambridgeshire was nominated by fellow paediatrician Dr Katharine McDevitt for her work championing the welfare of children within Peterborough and Cambridgeshire. She works tirelessly across the county with health and social care colleagues, ensuring there are services in place to keep the child safe.

She said: “I was very surprised by this nomination! I am passionate about Safeguarding children and am honoured to get recognition but I am just doing my job.”

Dr Wawrzkowicz’s career spans almost 20 years and she has been called an inspiration by colleagues.

The nomination was reviewed by the judging panel which was made up of business leaders from around the country. This year the awards ceremony will take place at the Peterborough Arena East of England Showground on 2 November 2018.

As a finalist Dr Wawrzkowicz will attend an interview with 3 judges for her category on September 12 at Peterborough United’s ABAX Football Stadium.

Staff spotlight Laura Doyle, Ward Manager on the Haematology/Oncology Ward has been spurred on to make positive changes to improve patient care after completing the Introduction to LEAN and Yellow Belt Six Sigma course.

Endoscopy nurse published nationally Congratulations to Irene Dunkley, Nurse Consultant in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy who has led on a national piece of work on the staffing needed to provide safe patient care in Endoscopy which has been published in the medical journal Frontline.

Irene said: “I am so proud of my contribution to this piece of work, this concensus agreement covers the whole of the United Kingdom and is a huge achievement for everyone who contributed.

“There is further work underway on an e-portfolio to guide and record endoscopy staff competences and will in the future become part of the assessment process for accreditation by the Joint Advisory Group for Gastrointestinal endoscopy.”

Hinchingbrooke has a long tradition of Nurse Endoscopists, Irene Dunkley was one of the first Nurse Endoscopists in the country and combined the role as a clinical nurse specialist supporting patients with inflammatory bowel disease both of these roles were innovative in the 1980’s.

Using the tools and techniques gained from the course and with support from Anita Jackson, Cost Improvement & Transformation Director and Black Belt Six Sigma, Laura has mapped out a specific patient journey and identified areas where improvements can be made.

Laura said: “I have always been interested in improving the quality of the patient’s journey and improving efficiency to make things run better. The Yellow Belt course was amazing as it gave me the tools and the know how to achieve this.

“The Yellow Belt course is completely focused on improving quality. Improve quality and everything else will follow. This resonated with me empowering me to go and make changes to my ward. With Anita’s support and the wonderful support of my team on the ward, we have been able to improve a number of things.

“Our call bell performance has improved significantly. We have reorganised the ward to group things together to improve efficiency and reviewed the quantities of medication that we stock to reduce waste.

“One of our exciting outcomes is that we are now working to improve the patient experience by delivering some chemotherapy that is currently given as an inpatient to the outpatient setting. This will enable our patients to spend more time at home with their loved ones rather than in hospital. I cannot recommend the course highly enough and I am excited to continue to put in to practice everything I have learned.”

Success for the Clinical Endoscopist programme Yul De La Cruz has participated and successfully completed the Health Education England’s pilot programme for clinical Endoscopist and is now an accredited Endoscopist! Yul is now part of Gastroenterology Nurse Specialists at Hinchingbrooke Hospital. The programme took 7 months (of very hard work), to complete all the aspects of education and practical learning.

Irene Dunkley, Nurse Consultant Gastroenterology and Endoscopy said: “Yul’s training was overseen by Dr R Kassam with mentorship and clinical supervision by myself and Pam Crozier. The whole department was very supportive and encouraging and has welcomed Yul into the team with open arms.

“There is always lots of work for the Gastroenterology nursing team, but one of the things we enjoy most is supporting education of our hospital staff. We actively support staff development and are always willing to give advice to other departments.”

New trial aims to reduce complications during childbirth The Trust is participating in a new research study that aims to reduce complications that occur during the delivery of bigger babies.

The Big Baby Trial, led by University of Warwick, University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire (UHCW) NHS Trust and the Perinatal Institute, explores whether inducing pregnant women at 38 weeks can reduce the chances of shoulder dystocia in women who are expecting bigger babies.

Dr Sangeeta Pathak, Director of Research and Obstetrics and Gynaecology Consultant, said: “Shoulder dystocia is where one of the baby’s shoulders becomes stuck behind the pubic bone after the head is delivered. This can be a serious complication during childbirth and is especially common when the baby is larger than the average size.

The study is now open to women receiving care at Peterborough City and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals. Mothers who consent will be selected at random to either be induced early, approximately 38 weeks, or they will be part of a control group who wait for labour to start naturally and receive care as normal.

“The results of the trial will help healthcare professionals identify the safest method of

Our Inflammatory Bowel Disease Patient Panel is staging its fourth patient and public event designed to help and support people whose lives are affected

by Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, such as Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis.

The event, called You, Me and IBD, takes place on Saturday 6 October 2018 from 1.30pm to 5.30pm in the Learning Centre at Peterborough City Hospital (4th floor Core A). Refreshments will be available both on arrival and during the break.

Trust begins pilot using SignLive There is a national shortage of British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters which has proven to be problematic in emergency situations for our patients and we have received some patient complaints as a result regarding the length of time they have to wait for an interpreter.

Putting the spotlight on life with IBD

The free event is being held for the hundreds of sufferers in the local community, their carers, families and friends. Those attending will be able to take part in interactive sessions and pick up information on a wide range of relevant topics such as diet, psychological effects and managing symptoms.

The sessions will be hosted by a variety of clinicians, including the hospital’s Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurses, Consultant Gastroenterologists, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon and Dieticians. Peterborough Ileostomy Association, Crohns and Colitis UK and Coloplast will also be present.

Our IBD Patient Panel is based at Peterborough City Hospital and consist of patients who use the hospital’s IBD service, plus the Trust’s specialist IBD team.

This service will not replace a face-to-face interpreter but will be used to supplement one until they can arrive.

Joy as cancer patient Lucas rings end of treatment bell A9 Ward Manager, Jayne Warburton with blankets

Patients benefits from donation of knitted items Our hospitals have been the lucky recipients of some beautifully hand knitted items which have been donated from various sources, including our own volunteers, the local Women’s Institute groups and other people who have generously given their time to help make some stunning creations.

With the winter months arriving soon, we are really grateful for all of these donations which have included lap blankets, used mainly on our Frail Elderly wards, baby blankets and red baby hats which identify babies who need to be kept especially warm.

Six-year-old Lucas Devaney has rung the End of Treatment bell on the Amazon children’s ward at Peterborough City Hospital, after a 3½ year battle with Leukaemia.

Lucas, who lives near Boston, celebrated finishing treatment with family and friends, who all came along to watch him ring the bell. He was also joined by patients with similar conditions that he had befriended over the years.

The idea of having an End of Treatment bell on Amazon ward was instigated by Lucas’ mum, Joanne, in 2016, having seen a bell at Addenbrookes’ Hospital in Cambridge. Lucas had most of his treatment at Peterborough City Hospital, so it was important to her that he was able to ring it on the ward where he knew everyone so well.

Proud didn’t come close to describing how Joanne felt watching her 6 year old son finally ring it. “To be honest, it’s going to be difficult not to go every week, all the staff – doctors, play team and nurses – made us feel like family. They were amazing throughout our journey,” said Joanne. “Lucas ringing the End of Treatment bell was so special, it was a perfect day.”

Amazon ward, said: “Lucas is an inspirational young boy, whose family has supported him throughout. He’s funny, always smiling and I’ve enjoyed watching him grow into a confident little boy.”

The bell is supplied by End of Bell Treatment Bells UK, a US based charity by the parents whose young daughter was going through cancer treatment.

Amazon Rocks Our play team have been keeping our young patients on Amazon ward at Peterborough City Hospital entertained by encouraging them to paint rocks with unique designs which have been placed around the hospital both inside and outside.

Staff members and visitors are encouraged to hunt for these Amazon rocks and share with us on social media using #Amazonrocks. Once found, please hide them away again for the next person to seek out.

Zoe Wilkinson, Play Service Co-ordinator, said: “Rock painting has become very popular recently and is a great activity for children of all ages. Creating a design and the excitement of hiding them is a great distraction for the children whilst they are either waiting for procedures or recovering.”

Celebrating our staff and volunteers

Long Service Awards In July the Trust held a celebration of long service for staff from all of our hospital sites who have been with us for 25 years. This year we celebrated almost 30 members of staff who reached this fantastic milestone.

Between them their service totalled an amazing 700 years.

The event took place in the Lecture Theatre at Peterborough City Hospital and staff members from Peterborough City, Hinchingbrooke and Stamford Hospitals, in a variety of roles, were presented with their certificates and bonds by Jo Bennis, Chief Nurse and Stephen Graves, Chief Executive.

Stephen Graves said: “It is and remains

an honour to present staff with their Long Service Awards. I always enjoy hearing about the achievements of our staff during their time with the Trust and 25 years is

indeed an achievement to be celebrated.

This was my final Long Service event and I would like to thank all our staff members for their loyalty and dedication.”

Standout staff to be commended in annual awards ceremony this Autumn This October will see our Outstanding Achievement awards ceremony take place, recognising the amazing work of staff across all of our hospital sites.

The nominees for most categories are made up from winners of our monthly awards where staff are nominated by their colleagues for something that has shown they go above and beyond their regular call of duty. In addition, there is the Hospital Hero award, presented to someone from each of the main three sites and nominated by patients and the public.

“The Hospital Hero award is presented as the last award of the ceremony,” says Rob Hughes, Chairman. “All of the evening’s

nominees and winners are spectacular in their own right, but this award holds particular prominence as it’s voted for by the public. A lot of thought and emotion goes into the writing of the nominations and our judging panel always has a very difficult job in selecting an overall winner.

To hear the wonderful stories of the lengths staff have gone to for patients, is always heart-warming and it really illustrates the quality of care our patients receive.”

Volunteers Week 2018 As part of Volunteers Week, from 1 – 7 June we celebrated the contribution made by volunteers in our hospitals. In 2017 our dedicated team of volunteers donated an amazing 46,500 hours to support patients, visitors and staff across the Trust.

During the week the Executive Team went ‘Back to the Floor’ to spend time with volunteers. Chief Executive, Stephen Graves shadowed Eric whose main role in the Eye Clinic at Peterborough City Hospital is to reassure patients by holding their hand during cataract surgery.

Research has supported this as valuable practice which can reduce patients’ anxiety and give them an increased feeling of having received excellent care.

Speaking about his experience, Stephen said: “I am pleased to have been able to take part in this initiative as it is imperative that we recognise and understand the value of the volunteers who play such a vital role in enhancing patient experience, while experiencing the roles they undertake on our behalf.”

Stamford Hospital celebrates 190 years!

Stamford Hospital has been serving the local community for almost two centuries, first opening its doors in 1828 - 190 years ago. Join us as we look back over the hospital’s rich history and key milestones: 1823 – Local surgeon Henry Fryer bequeathed a sum of money for the purpose of building a general infirmary in Stamford, on the condition that it was built within 5 years after his death.

1949 – The hospital changed its name to become Stamford and Rutland Hospital.

•H ealth clinic, purpose-built phlebotomy and pain management suites

1988 – The Van Geest family generously donated £1.1 million to develop a 24 bedded geriatric ward, later named the John van Geest Ward.

•C hemotherapy and lymphoedema suite •O utpatient area with rooms for adults and children •U ltrasound room and improved physiotherapy gym •A refurbished reception, redecorated corridors, new lighting and flooring 2017 – Peterborough and Stamford NHS Foundation Trust merged with Hinchingbrooke Healthcare NHS Trust to become North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.

1828 –Stamford Infirmary opened to patients on 5 August. At the time of opening, the hospital only had capacity for 20 patients: ten men and ten women.

1879 – Three two-storey isolation blocks were erected to accommodate patients with infectious diseases.

1928 – In its centennial year, the hospital saw 713 patients admitted to general wards, 1345 outpatients, 401 operations and 49 cases of infectious illnesses, including scarlet fever, diphtheria, and typhoid and parathyphoid fever.

1914-1918 – The hospital played a significant role in World War I, providing care and rehabilitation for injured soldiers returning from France and Belgium.

1939 – The last person was discharged from the isolation blocks. These were closed until August of that year, when they were repurposed as casualty stations during World War II. 1948 – The NHS was established and the Hospital ceased to be a voluntary hospital.

2004 – Peterborough and Stamford NHS Foundation Trust was formed and became one of the first ten foundation trusts created under the NHS Act 2003.

Did you know?

The Stamford Hospital site used to house a monastery, which is believed to have been the resting place of English Monarchs travelling to and from the North. The Monastery surrendered in 1539, but the gateway still stands on the grounds.

Patients benefit from new quiet room at Stamford Hospital Stamford Hospital now has a quiet space for patients, staff and visitors of all faiths and none to use for reflection and prayer.

The room has been transformed into a tranquil and comfortable space with books about all the major faiths and prayer cards. There is also a dedicated space facing west for practicing Muslims

with prayer mats.

Helen Fyall, Lead Chaplain at the Trust, said: “Matron, Sue Brooks and I have worked together to create a welcoming space for patients, staff and visitors of all faiths and none. We’ve put nature pictures on the walls and purchased comfortable chairs and cushions. There are also books on mindfulness, poetry and

photography for those looking to take a break from their busy day and reflect.”

Sue Brooks, Matron and Site Manager at Stamford Hospital said: “This important addition to the facilities we provide has been made possible by the generosity of the Friends of Stamford Hospital and I would like to thank them for their support.”

Memorial Garden given go ahead A Neonatal and bereavement link nurse has been given the green light to create a memorial garden for bereaved parents at Peterborough City Hospital.

Charlie Singleton, who works on the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, came up with the idea of creating a special place for parents to visit and remember their little ones in 2017.

Since then she has been working with the Trust and the local community to turn the idea into a reality.

She said: “I have seen people close to me go through the heartbreaking ordeal of losing a child and I felt as though once a family had lost a baby, it then became a forgotten baby to the outside world. So I decided to create a space where families could come together and remember their children. The garden

will remember all babies, regardless of how long they were on this earth for. Every life matters and every life deserves to be recognised” Stage one of the garden has been completed and a design of the garden has now been finalised. Donations have already been flooding in from various garden centres as well as volunteers who have been offering their services to build the garden.

Staff at Peterborough City Hospital also helped, raising over £700 for the bereavement garden as part of the Trust’s NHS 70 celebrations “I would like to thank everyone who has offered their help and donated to the cause,” said Charlie.

“The support the project has received has been overwhelming, and I am very grateful.”

Remembering Hinchingbrooke Volunteer and Friend It’s with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of Diane Edwards. Diane, pictured on the right, passed away at home in July, having battled a long-term illness.

Diane was a very valued volunteer who worked on various wards at Hinchingbrooke Hospital over the last two years. Prior to becoming a volunteer, Diane was associated with the hospital for several years as the secretary of the Friends of Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

Her wish was to take each day and fill it to the full, despite her declining health. She was a lovely person and will be greatly missed by staff and volunteers in the hospital and also by the Friends of Hinchingbrooke.

New Peterborough Cardiac Cuppa Club A new support group for all cardiac patients and their supporters has been set up in Peterborough. It will be an informal get together where patients can chat and socialise with the opportunity to talk with others whose lives have been affected by the same thing that is changing theirs.

There is no need to book and the sessions are free to attend. They will be held on the first Friday of each month at John Lewis café, in Queensgate, Peterborough.

Achievements

Midwife Receives Annual Award Midwife, Debbie Abbott has received the 2018 Pam’s Prize, an award that gives recognition to volunteer breastfeeding counsellors and the difference they make to so many families in their time of need.

Debbie Abbott works as a midwife at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and also volunteers as a Breastfeeding Counsellor for the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers (ABM), providing advice and assistance to new mothers with breast feeding.

She trained with the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers and qualified in the late 1980s after her second son was born. When the National Breastfeeding Helpline was launched Debbie offered telephone counselling for local women but is now part of the ABMs emailing counselling service.

Debbie said: “I plan to continue volunteering at the ABM group and answering emails for the foreseeable future. I really love being part of women’s breastfeeding journeys, I have so much admiration for their strength and determination to go the very best they can for their babies.”

Over the past 15 years Debbie has been involved with running a weekly support group in St Neots where she offers support, help and reassurance for mothers with breastfeeding challenges.

Cardiac Team wins national award A team of healthcare professionals who provide psychological therapy for patients with heart conditions have won the British Heart Foundation (BHF) Alliance’s Integrated Care Award. Iona McAllister, the Trust’s Cardiac Rehab Co-ordinator and her colleagues were recognised for their work to improve care for people recovering from a heart attack or heart surgery. They redesigned their services to integrate with the psychological wellbeing service to provide emotional wellbeing support for patients.

The team, which is also made up of colleagues from Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Foundation Trust, were honoured for the way they work together to fast-track patients on to appropriate psychological interventions, which helps to improve patients’ recovery and reduce hospital readmissions.

Iona said: “I am honoured to receive this award from the BHF. Our motivation is to improve care for

people with heart conditions.”

Julie Holroyd, a Consultant Cardiology Nurse at Peterborough City Hospital was also nominated in the leadership and engagement category. Julie has previously won awards for her outstanding contribution to her work and recently hit the headlines after leaping into action during her holiday when a patient suffered a heart-attack on a flight to Sri Lanka.

Hinchingbrooke Hospital wins Valuing Volunteers award During Volunteers Week, the Hinchingbrooke Hospital Volunteer Services Team were awarded with the Volunteering Cambridgeshire and Peterborough ‘Valuing Volunteers Award’ for 2018.

The award was presented to Volunteer Services Manager, Barry Pridmore and Volunteer Coordinator, Debbie Cammies

by High Sherriff, Dr Andrew Harter and Deputy Lieutenant, Ms Lily Bacon.

The Hinchingbrooke team were up against tough competition, including the Dementia Carers Support service at Cambridgeshire NHS Foundation Trust and Age UK. What makes the Valuing Volunteers Award so special is that nominations can only be made from the organisation’s volunteers.

Positive trainee feedback for Obstetrics and Gynaecology Congratulations to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department at Peterborough City Hospital who have received fantastic registrar feedback from the General Medical Council.

The service provided to carers across our hospitals run has been highlighted as ‘outstanding’ by the Carers Trust Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Norfolk.

In the annual survey undertaken by all the trainees in the country, Peterborough City Hospital was rated as top in the region for overall satisfaction and clinical supervision.

As well as being rated second in the whole country for overall satisfaction. The team have increased their scores in almost all areas.

Mr Sriemevan, College Tutor said “It is always nice to be recognised for our work and for that, on behalf of our department I am eternally grateful to all our trainees.

This achievement is due to a happy team consisting of consultants, midwives, nurses, rota coordinator, secretaries and our management team.”

The Trust’s Carer’s Adviser, Teresa Jude, and Dementia Nurse Specialist, Alison Gray, were presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Carers Award in the Sharing The Caring and Pride in our Carers Awards hosted by the Carers Trust in June.

David Woolf, Clinical Director for FISS Division, said: “This is a great achievement for the specialty, particular recognition goes to Mr Sriemevan, the department lead and college tutor for his commitment to medical education.”

Hinchingbrooke Hospital Chef cooks up another win!

Hinchingbrooke Hospital’s awardwinning head chef Lisa Normanton has achieved another great win - she has been named the first NHS hospital chef to win the title Public Sector Chef of the Year by the Craft Guild of Chefs.

The catering team at Hinchingbrooke produces over 750 meals a day for patients on the wards, the on-site nursery, as well as patients, staff and

With the support of the nursing teams on the wards of our hospitals in Hinchingbrooke, Peterborough and Stamford, the carers team has implemented many positive changes to both support and work with carers to ensure better outcomes for patients.

This includes running a staff education programme to ensure that carers are welcomed and put at the centre of the patients’ care. This work was highlighted by the Carers Trust as “exponentially improving the lives of family carers and the people they love.”

Teresa said: “We were thrilled to receive this award, in Carers Week 2018, in recognition of the improvements we have worked hard to embed.

Lisa, who manages the catering team, was commended for her work implementing changes to the catering provision and the health and nutrition strategy for children, patients, staff and visitors.

She said: “It is an honour to be recognised by the Craft Guild of Chefs and I would like to thank the catering team for their continued support and hard work. We have worked with Trust dieticians to ensure our menu is nutritious with very little, if any, salt.

We use meat that is Red Tractor assured, so we are confident it is safe and produced to a good standard. We are committed to driving an ‘eating for health’ agenda by ensuring that patients, staff and visitors have access to healthy meals made with fresh and good quality ingredients.”

“We try to make the hospital experience a positive one for the carer as well as the patient. This will include giving carers open visiting, helping them with parking costs, providing Z-beds so they can stay with the patient if they wish, and providing a Carers Pack of toiletries for the times they might have a prolonged stay with the patient. In addition, we use carer’s passports to help carers access all the services on offer to them and provide a volunteer sitting service to give carers a break. We hope that these touches reduce the worry and stress a stay in hospital may create.”

Stamford Hospital hosts tea party for 70th Birthday of NHS Staff, both past and present, and volunteers across Stamford and Rutland Hospital marked the 70th birthday of the NHS with a tea party.

Attendees were invited to reminisce over a cup of tea and slice of cake and were given the opportunity to browse a selection of historic artefacts from Stamford Hospital’s museum. They were also treated to a reading from Chris Martin, Stamford’s Poet Laurette, who wrote a special poem for the occasion.

Long standing staff member Su Mansell created an incredible NHS themed cake for the event, which was cut by retired nursing sister, Betty Vellum. Betty began her nursing career in 1947 when joined Stamford Hospital as a trainee nurse, and still regularly pops in to see staff.

Ivan Graham, Assistant Director of Nursing said: “It was an honour to be invited to the event. As a member of trust staff and a local resident it was excellent to see so many members of staff, past and present coming together to celebrate the 70th birthday of the NHS at Stamford.”

All three time capsules created for Peterborough, Hinchingbrooke and Stamford Hospitals were sealed, not to be opened until 2088 in special commemorative ceremonies during the week of the NHS 70 celebrations.

The capsules were unveiled by the three longest serving members of staff on each site and filled with a variety of donations from staff. “It was an honour to be asked to take part in this event and especially so as we were celebrating 70 years of our wonderful National Healthcare Service,” says Angie O’Sullivan, who unveiled the Peterborough capsule, working for the Trust for an incredible 44 years. “My granddaughter Annabelle was with me on the day and it was amazing to have her take part in something she will hopefully be around to see the opening for in another 70 years time!”

Items donated to the capsules came from staff across a variety of departments at the three hospitals and all illustrated life in the NHS in the present day. They included: • A vial of ferinject – an intravenous iron supplement that is starting to show a reduction in the need for blood transfusions in some patients.

• Antibiotics which will almost certainly become resolute in the next 10-20 years due to resistance increasing.

• An NHS 70 badge, created specifically for our Trust and given out to staff who contributed to the many events planned for the anniversary • An obstetric pinard used by midwives to listen to babies movements and heartbeat. They’ve been used for decades and will most likely continue to be a useful piece of equipment for the foreseeable future.

• A ‘love rocks’ stone painted on Amazon children’s ward.

• A sensory band used specifically to calm and comfort patients with dementia.

Around 20 items went into each capsule and it’s hoped that they will all be of great interest when they’re discovered by future healthcare colleagues.

NHS70 celebrations were a piece of cake!

Staff across Peterborough City and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals celebrated the 70th birthday of the NHS with special guests and lots of tea and cake in the run up to 5th July.

Staff on Apple Tree, Cherry Tree, Walnut Ward and MSSU at Hinchingbrooke Hospital all held tea parties on their wards for patients and staff to mark the big celebration.

Cherry Tree also invited the Mayor of Huntingdon, Cllr Sarah Gifford, who joined patients for tea and cake in the day room on the ward. The room was decorated with a 1940s style, with china cups and saucers, cake stands, bunting and various uniforms over the years.

A tea party was also held in the Garden Restaurant, with school children from Spring Common and pre-school children from Tree Tots Nursery presenting birthday cards to Deputy Chief Executive, Caroline Walker.

Staff at Peterborough City Hospital celebrated the occasion with a ‘street party’ in the main atrium. Patients and visitors were treated to a slice of cake and a rendition of somewhere over the rainbow by the Trust Choir. There was also the opportunity to purchase a limited edition badge to raise money for a memorial garden for bereaved parents.

Caroline Walker, said: “The celebrations

really highlighted just how much passion and appreciation there is for the NHS. It was great to be able to hear stories from individuals who remember the changes that the NHS has been through and to receive the birthday cards from the children. Thank you to everyone for making this such a great success.”

Behind the scenes at Hinchingbrooke Hospital Hinchingbrooke Hospital opened its doors to the public on Saturday 14 July, at a special open day as part of the Trust NHS 70 celebrations.

Staff, from across the hospital, came together to give visitors a behind-the-scenes peek at what goes on at the hospital.

Visitors were given the opportunity to dress up in scrubs and take a tour of theatres, look around the pathology laboratory and test mock urine samples, test how clean their hands were with the Infection Control Team and join 999 club to visit various parts of the hospital including, pharmacy and the Emergency Department.

Staff from maternity, fracture clinic, research and development and Cambridgeshire Community Services’ Holly Ward and Special Care Baby Unit, were on hand to talk to visitors about the fantastic work going on in their department.

Stephen Graves, Chief Executive, said: “It was a really successful event that attracted lots of people throughout the day who were very keen to take a look behind the scenes. It was fantastic to be able to reach out to our local community in this way.

“The day would not have been a success, had it not been for the staff who gave up a very sunny Saturday to be part of the day.”

Fundraising thanks

Family donate to Critical Care Unit A London-based family have raised an impressive £2,000 for the Critical Care Unit at Peterborough City Hospital in memory of mum and sister, Pauline.

Gary Bellars and his family presented the cheque to staff on the Critical Care Unit to thank them for their care and support.

Gary said: “Mum was visiting Peterborough when she was taken ill and brought to hospital. She was admitted to the Critical Care Unit where she received care before sadly passing away on 5 April.

“We cannot thank the team on the Critical Care Unit enough for everything they did for mum. They made her feel comfortable and calm during what must have been a very scary time for her and treated us with care and compassion during a very difficult time.

“Mum was a very generous and kind-spirited person, who always wanted the best for everyone, so we wanted to honour her memory by giving back to the unit. The support we have received from friends and family has been incredible and we’ve raised above and beyond our target.”

Former patient raises over £50,000 for Oncology department Eight years ago, top fundraiser Mark Cross held a Darts Fun Day following his own recovery from cancer treatment. The event has grown each year and Mark, from March, recently visited Peterborough City Hospital to present his latest donation to the Oncology department.

The 2018 event was standing room only, with 100 people playing darts and many more enjoying the tombola and auction. This led to a record breaking donation of £12,000.

To date Mark has raised an amazing total of £56,500, surpassing his original target of £50,000.

Previously, Mark’s donations have funded comfortable chairs for chemotherapy and radiotherapy patients and sky ceilings which give patients a view of the summer sky while they are receiving radiotherapy. It has also enabled the purchase of an ECG machine, and has funded a radiotherapy trials radiographer, to help improve recruitment into clinical trials.

Dr Karen McAdam, Consultant Medical Oncologist who treated Mark, received the cheque and was deeply touched by the incredible amount raised this year. Karen said: “I can’t believe how successful Mark’s fundraising days have become year on year. It feels inadequate to merely thank him for all he has done.”

Mark responded that he couldn’t do it without his supporters and that he’s proud to have beaten his record this time. “Our supporters are local, and many see first-hand where the money goes.

“It’s such a popular event, I’d feel like I’d be

letting down the community if I stopped holding the Darts Days. The date is already booked for next year!”

People who donated to the fund throughout the year include: • Liam Lorraine who raised £400 running a half marathon • Nigel Searle who held a hog roast which raised £686 • A £500 donation from a lady whose husband was also treated at PCH.

Impressive Donations made by Friends of Hinchingbrooke Hospital The Friends of Hinchingbrooke Hospital has been raising funds for the hospital since it opened benefitting many staff and patients. Since May 2017 they have donated many valuable items including:

The money was raised during several events throughout the year, including; Strawberry tea, an annual draw, a pie and quiz night and a Christmas stall. They have also been supported by Gwenda Cards, who raises funds by selling handmade greeting cards, jewellery and gifts in the hospital.

Developing our Forces-friendly reputation Our Director of Workforce Louise Tibbert has signed the Trust up to the Step Into Health Programme, which supports people leaving the Armed Forces, veterans and their partners, to access the numerous career opportunities available in the NHS. Louise said: “The Step Into Health programme is an excellent way for our hospitals to benefit from the skills and experience ex-Service personnel can bring. Many of the skills they develop in Service are transferable and their cultural values are closely aligned to that of the NHS. So for us, this is a ‘win-win’ situation, as we are able to offer support to the Armed Forces community while enhancing our recruitment programme at the same time.”

The Trust signed the Armed Forces Covenant in December 2017 – demonstrating its commitment towards being a Forces-friendly employer. Until 2014, Peterborough City Hospital was home to a Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU), which was the base for many military medical staff.

Louise added: “The Trust already employs a

number of ex-forces personnel, thanks to the legacy of our MDHU, as well as reservists and partners of Service men and women. We want to do more to make our hospitals a supportive place of work for these staff, and those that join our ranks in the future.

Apprentice scheme grows following year one success Peterborough City Hospital’s plaster room welcomed two new apprentices this September, following the apprenticeship scheme’s success in previous years.

The two-year apprenticeship is comprised of an NVQ Level 3 diploma in Clinical Healthcare, followed by a casting course at Stanmore in the final year.

Jodie Abraham, pictured above, was the first successful apprentice on the scheme and is now an Orthopaedic Technician. She said: “As an apprentice I was taught how to give holistic, patient centred care whilst learning and growing my potential within the field of orthopaedics.

“I continued to progress within my career and even now as a qualified technician, every day I learn something different. On top of applying and removing casts, I am confident in wound care and removal of wires and often assist in manipulations and attend theatre on a regular basis to apply casts. It is a great feeling knowing that you’ve helped someone.”

NHS Retirement Fellowship celebrates 40th birthday The Peterborough and District branch of the NHS Retirement Fellowship (NHSRF) celebrated the national Fellowship’s 40th anniversary by holding a tea party at Orton Hall on 5 July.

Over 40 fellowship members, family and guests including the Trust’s chairman Rob Hughes enjoyed cream teas and a special birthday cake made by the branch’s chairman Dorinda Richardson In January, members were also asked to nominate other to represent the Branch at either the Buckingham Palace or Holyrood Palace Garden Parties. Members, Michael and Marilyn Court were invited to visit Buckingham Palace on June 5, and Pearl Morton and Ann Bramwell were accepted to attend Holyrood Palace on July 4.

Join us for our public board meetings Members of the public are welcome to attend our monthly Board of Directors Meetings which are held in public. In these meetings you can hear updates on how our hospitals are performing against key care quality targets as well as learn how we manage our budget at a time when services are more in demand than ever.

Our public meetings are rotated around our three hospital sites, to give more local residents the chance to attend without having to travel too far.

Welcome to: • Roberta Roulstone, who was recently elected to represent members living in Stamford and South Lincolnshire. Roberta, who lives in Bourne, is a former NHS employee, having recently retired from a role in Peterborough as a specialist midwife.

• Rebecca Dunkerley has stepped in to a vacancy within the Trust’s Greater Peterborough constituency. She is a Peterborough resident and has worked as a physiotherapist as well as a manager within the NHS. • The Rev Kevin Burdett has taken up one of two vacant governor roles within the Huntingdonshire constituency. He is a semiretired church minister from Huntingdon who has also previously served his community as a chairman of both Fenstanton and Burwell Parish Councils.
