Welcome Welcome to the latest edition of Link Magazine.

First of all I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year. I hope you were able to enjoy the Christmas period, and thanks to all the staff who worked so hard to keep our services running during the festive season.

We all know that winter is a very busy time for the NHS, and in this edition you will find information not only about how we can look after our patients, but also ourselves at this time of year. One simple thing we can do is make sure we get our flu jab to protect ourselves and patients, and you can find out more about this on p16.

There are many opportunities and challenges ahead of us as we move into 2019. Within the Trust we will be pushing on with the implementation of our new People Strategy, which will see us developing new roles

within our workforce and help us with the continuing innovations and improvements in care pathways.

We have the redevelopment of Weston Park Hospital to look forward to, which will benefit patients across the whole of South Yorkshire, and will also be celebrating 25 years since the opening of the Princess Royal Spinal Injuries Centre.

In 2018 we marked the 70th anniversary of the NHS, and nationally we will be contributing to the NHS Long Term Plan which will set out how the NHS can continue to provide the very best for patients, families and staff in the years to come.

One thing I know we can always count on at STH is our fantastic staff. We were rated as ‘good’ in our latest CQC inspection, with many outstanding areas, and that is thanks to the dedication every one of our 17,000 staff show

Dr David Hughes will take on the role of Medical Director in February 2019 when Dr David Throssell retires. Dr Hughes has been a Deputy Medical Director at the Trust since 2013, and prior to this he was Associate Medical Director for Cancer. He is a nationally renowned Consultant Histopathologist and began his consultant career in 1998 before moving to STH in 2005.

Health Secretary joins staff and patients to open dedicated 24/7 stroke rehabilitation and assessment centre Chris’s story Chris Grant, 80, from Sheffield suffered a stroke last year.

He was admitted to hospital within half an hour, where he remained for six days.

He had lost the use of his right hand and arm, was unable to stand or walk unaided and could not swallow liquids without risk of choking.

He responded to the treatment in hospital and was recommended for admission to SPARC to receive more intense treatments on a daily basis.

With the intensive support available at the centre, Chris was able to regain the use of his right arm and hand, drink safely, recover his speech and improve his mobility to enable him to return home with appropriate support.

The Health Secretary joins in with a therapy kitchen assessment with patient Jean Fewster The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Matt Hancock, MP, officially opened the new Stroke Pathway Assessment and Rehabilitation Centre (SPARC) at Norfolk Park.

The new centre ensures patients who are not able to be discharged straight home from hospital receive specialist rehabilitative support, 24 hours a day, at a critical point in their recovery.

Staffed by a team of stroke rehabilitation nurses, physiotherapists, pharmacists, dietitians, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists, orthoptists, and doctors, the new 30-bed centre is expected to reduce long-term dependence on acute hospital care and ensure patients receive the right rehabilitative support in the right setting at the right time of their recovery.

Boasting a therapy gym with specialist rehabilitation equipment and a specially designed kitchen with moveable surfaces, patients can improve balance, coordination and strength, and learn how to adapt to their changing needs, like having to cook onehanded, in a supportive environment.

Chris said: “I had my up and down moments but all the staff, medical and non-medical, were really friendly, encouraging and supportive.

“I would definitely recommend this centre as it provides all the intensity of care that I needed and got.”

In addition there are spacious grounds outside for social interaction and a communal area for dining. Both can be key in easing depression and anxiety – feelings that are often experienced after having a stroke.

Mr Hancock said: “The integrated care I saw in Sheffield was fantastic. Having this sort of rehabilitation facility in the community gives stroke survivors the best chance of recovery, and it was great to see first-hand the different ways staff are supporting patients, from tai chi to cooking skills. It’s the sort of thing we want to see lots more of in our NHS.”

17,000 reasons why inspectors ha Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Trust overall and ‘Outstanding’ for man

Thanks to the hard work and commitment of 17,000 staff and volunteers, the Trust has been given an overall rating of ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) with many services rated as ‘Outstanding.’

This means the Trust is rated as one of the top 20% of NHS Hospital Trusts and one of only a few to have achieved Good or Outstanding in every one of the five domains which the Care Quality Commission use to rate a NHS organisation.

The rating for providing Responsive services has been raised to ‘Outstanding’.

In their report, CQC Inspectors said: “Patients, relatives and carers gave consistently positive feedback. They told

us they felt safe and we observed several examples of compassionate care with staff treating patients with kindness, dignity and respect.”

The report recognises that there is a strong safety culture across the Trust with a wellestablished culture of continuous quality improvement. The Trust’s PROUD values were also understood and owned across the full range of staff groups.

The Chief Inspector of Hospitals, Professor Ted Baker, said: “There has been some outstanding work done at the Trust in response to patient needs - particularly the work in end of life care and the way the Trust supports patients to get early access to services. Patients we spoke to were entirely positive about the way their care needs were met. We found clear evidence

of a knowledgeable and steady leadership who are committed to continual improvement.”

The report states that in the Trusts annual end of life survey 85% of respondents rated the care given to their loved ones in the last days to hours of life as excellent or good and that inspectors saw numerous examples of how staff provided support to patients receiving care at the end of life.

Carers were also supported as much as possible to stay with their loved ones by offering beds and flexible visiting times.

The Trust’s waiting times were also noted as being some of the best in the NHS and that patient and feedback scores were also very high.

Kirsten Major, Interim Chief Executive, said: “Everyone across the Trust works so hard to do their best for patients and so I am pleased that this has been reflected in the Good rating and the Outstanding rating for so many services. Every one of you contributes to providing high quality care, no matter what role you have or at what level.”

Tony Pedder, Trust Chairman, said: “We really do have 17,000 reasons why we have achieved such a positive rating from the Care Quality Commission. Every one of our staff and volunteers make our organisation what it is and we are very fortunate to have some of the best people in the NHS working in our hospitals and community services.”

Patients and visitors are no longer allowed to smoke anywhere on the premises of the Northern General Hospital and the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, in addition to Jessop Wing, Weston Park Hospital and Charles Clifford Dental Hospital which were already smoke-free sites.

The Trust’s community sites have also become smoke free.

This includes Firth Park, Beech Hill, Manor Clinic and Heeley Dental Clinic.

The Trust is encouraging smokers to take up the support available to help them quit to coincide with the establishment of the smoke-free sites.

Karen Jessop, Deputy Chief Nurse, said: “We know that around a quarter of cancer deaths and a third of respiratory related deaths are estimated to be attributable to smoking

and that the number of Sheffield residents who smoke is approximately one in five. This is why we hope the move to having smoke-free sites will encourage our staff, patients and visitors to seek support to help them quit.

“We also know that quitting smoking is extremely difficult and we have therefore amended our smoke free policy to permit vaping on hospital grounds to encourage the ‘swap to stop’ method of quitting tobacco.

We do however ask that people vape away from windows and entrances and are mindful of others around them.”

Hundreds gather to mark 50 years of transplantation in Sheffield Patients and staff past and present came together at a special event at Kenwood Hall to celebrate 50 years of organ transplantation in Sheffield.

One of the organisers was retired transplant surgeon Mr Andrew Raftery, who has completed more than 750 transplants.

Two of his former patients, twins Michael and John Thornton, attended. Michael received a kidney from John 37 years ago after suffering renal failure.

John said: “If you can save your brother’s life, you are going to do it.”

Michael said: “It was an amazing thing for him to do.”

Other attendees included 92 year old John Williams, who was one of the first surgeons to perform a transplant, and also Anthony Rebori who completed a marathon and is planning on competing in the 2020 Paralympics.

Artwork honouring organ donors unveiled A new artwork celebrating the gift of organ donation has been unveiled at the Northern General Hospital.

Families and friends of organ donors gathered to witness the unveiling at the Chesterman entrance, which coincided with Organ Donation Week.

Among those to attend was Helen Thompson, a Clinical Support Worker, whose daughter Skye died aged 17 three years ago due to a carotid artery thrombosis which caused a massive stroke.

As her next of kin, Helen made the brave decision to donate Skye’s organs, and said the installation, called ‘Thank you for life’, will celebrate the gift of life Skye and other donors make to many people.

“I was asked about organ donation, so I spoke to my mum about it. We knew it would be something she wanted to do, so we agreed.

In my job I see people who are waiting for transplants and I have seen what transplants do and how they change lives.

“There is no greater gift than your children.

For me this memorial means a lot. When I look at it I will always remember that some people are living when my daughter is sadly no longer here.”

The artwork, designed by artist Stella Corrall, embraces the varying aspects of organ donation, from those in need, those wishing to give and those who have had lives transformed.

All of these aspects overlap into one another

and the intersecting circles of the design embrace this with each one acknowledging heartfelt words.

The £5,000 work was funded by Sheffield Hospitals Charity.

Clare Croxall, Specialist Nurse in Organ Donation , said: “We have been working hard with our Arts in Health team to establish a fitting memorial here in Sheffield. We are thrilled with the final artwork which is a beautiful and colourful installation to recognise, remember and reflect on a donor’s brave and generous gift.”

Staff member has book published A pharmacy technician has had a children’s book about a skunk published.

Tracey Barker started writing to help her cope when her husband Steve was undergoing chemotherapy treatment, and wrote a short story about their pet skunk, Sansa.

Sansa (the Not-So-Smelly Skunk) is a rhyming picture book for children.

Tracey said: “When I read the story of Sansa to Steve he really liked it and suggested that I submit it to publishers. I have always enjoyed writing stories since school, and thanks to Steve and Sansa, my first book has been published.”

She has now submitted a second story about a prairie dog.

Woman who suffered a stroke at 39 weeks pregnant saved by procedure to mechanically remove a clot from her brain A mum-to-be who suffered a potentially catastrophic stroke when she was 39 weeks pregnant had her life and that of her unborn child saved by a procedure to mechanically remove a blood clot from her brain within three hours of collapsing at home.

Jana Smith, 29, was only the third known case in the UK of a pregnant woman undergoing a mechanical thrombectomy – a procedure to physically remove the clot from the brain using a catheter inserted in the groin and fed up through the blood vessels.

She made a full recovery following the procedure and had a healthy baby delivered by caesarean section three days later, with both mum and baby able to return home the same week.

Jana, of Stradbrook, Sheffield, said: “It was very scary and emotionally difficult for me and my husband because we’ve been waiting for this baby for some time. I had a miscarriage last year so little Jonny is our much wanted rainbow baby.

“The fact they saved me so quickly and I made a full recovery means the world to us.”

Stroke Consultant Dr Aaizza Naqvi said: “This was a challenging case and without the timely decision making that enabled the procedure to be undertaken quickly, it would have been very likely that Jana would have been left severely disabled and unable to look after her baby.

“It is very satisfying to see Jana is doing so well now.”

Jana was in the bathroom at home when she suddenly slid to the floor and was unable to get up. She managed to message her husband Tom for help, he phoned an ambulance and Jana was taken directly to radiology at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital for a quick initial assessment by the stroke team and a CT scan which confirmed a stroke.

It was decided to remove the clot using the mechanical method, and within hours of the procedure Jane had recovered significantly.

Consultant Interventional Neuroradiologist Sanjoy Nagaraja, who carried out the procedure, said: “The mechanical method

“Stroke team, radiology team, obstetrics and anaesthetists all sprang into action extremely quickly for this lady, and it is that team effort which has produced a great outcome.”

Jane subsequently had a healthy baby boy, Jonathan, born by caesarean section.

“He's a healthy beautiful little boy with a big appetite and I'm able to fully take care of him,” she said.

“When he's old enough to understand it, we will tell him the story of what happened when he was born.”

Nurses throw special princess party for palliative care patient Nursing staff dressed up as princesses to throw a special party for a palliative care patient.

They made her a princess cake and came in on their days off to do her hair and make-up.

Bettina Dale, 30, has end stage cancer and is receiving end of life care at the Palliative Care Unit at the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield.

They also organised free hire of a stretch limo and free pizza to give Bettina a truly memorable day.

Bettina had never had a princess party before despite always wanting one, so staff came together in their own time to organise one for her.

They dressed up as princesses and donated a dress for Bettina to wear, which was specially ironed by laundry.

Bettina said: “I felt like I was about to cry I was so happy and shocked.

It is the first time anyone has done anything like this for me.”

Senior Sister Jayne Dransfield said: “Bettina had an amazing day and I am proud to work with such amazing people who made it happen for her."

BBC presenter officially opens Northern General Eye Centre Broadcaster Dan Walker, best known for presenting BBC Breakfast and Football Focus, paid the Trust a visit to officially open the brand new state of the art £6.7m cataract eye centre.

Dan took time out of a busy schedule to unveil a plaque to mark the official opening and celebrate the centre reaching its 1,000th patient milestone - just six months after becoming operational.

Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness in the world, and it is estimated that over half of all people aged 65 and over have some cataract development in one or both eyes.

Since it opened the new eye centre, based at the Northern General Hospital, has been pivotal in helping to provide excellent outcomes and personalised care to thousands of patients needing cataract eye surgery in accessible and spacious surroundings.

The centre boasts some of the very best ophthalmic and assessment facilities in the world, which enable the team to plan and tailor surgery with pinpoint precision.

Patients also benefit from a one-stop assessment approach, where they can have all their diagnostic tests, preoperative assessments and readiness for surgery completed in just one visit, saving unnecessary repeat trips prior to surgery, dedicated pick up and drop off zones, a large, welcoming reception area, and a named nurse to ‘hold their hand’ during surgery.

National Awards Recognise Outstanding staff

Maxine Housley, a Clinical Support Worker who, specializes in caring for patients who have a stoma or complex wound, has been named Clinical Support Worker of the Year in the Our Health Heroes Awards.

The awards, supported by Health Education England, recognise staff who represent the best of the NHS. Maxine said: “I love doing what I do. It is challenging, never boring, and the patients are incredible. It is the best feeling in the world when you see a patient through to going home. That is what it is all about.”

Jenny Harris, who works in Community and Special Care Dentistry and at the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital, has been named as an honorary member of council at the NSPCC. Jenny, a consultant in paediatric dentistry, has been given the award in recognition of the difference her work has made to children.

She said: “I am very honoured to receive this award, and am also grateful to all my colleagues for their on-going support with safeguarding in dentistry. Dental professionals often get to know families well, so it is important that we know what to do if we have concerns about a child’s welfare.”

The ‘In and Out of Hospital’ arts programme was announced winner of the Patient’s Choice Award at the Building Better Healthcare Award ceremony on 31st October.

It supports long term creative art workshops for four different patient areas across the Trust including, Spinal Cord Injuries, Palliative Care and Hearing Impairment.

Mir Jansen, Arts Coordinator, said: “We are so excited to have received this award.

Patients who are in hospital for a long time benefit greatly from taking part in sociable, creative activities.”

First Higher Apprenticeship Graduates Celebrate Higher apprentices from the Trust were among the first group to complete a new pilot training programme in a regional first for healthcare employers.

68 Trainee Assistant Practitioners (TAPs), including 25 from STH, achieved the Healthcare Assistant Practitioner Diploma.

Fran Ashworth, Sister at the Immunology and Allergy Unit at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has received a Lifetime Achievement Award for her dedication to the field of immunodeficiency.

She received the award from the from the International Nursing Group for Immunodeficiencies (INGID).

Fran, who has worked as a nurse in immunology for 21 years, said: “I am very humbled and touched by this award, especially as my peers from all over the world have voted for me to receive this accolade.”

They will support registered nurses, theatre staff and healthcare scientists to deliver patient care by taking on specific tasks and caseloads in specialist wards and clinical departments under the supervision of Registered Healthcare Professional.

Next generation of nurses qualify Chief Nurse Chris Morley and Nurse Director Una Cunningham were part of the platform party at the graduation ceremony for nursing students at Sheffield Hallam University.

Chris said: "It was a privilege to be a part of the ceremony and see all the graduates receiving their awards. It was particularly good to recognise those graduates who have chosen to start their careers as newly qualified registered nurses or midwives with us at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals. I look forward to welcoming you to our team and congratulate you on your graduation.”

Outstanding Achievement Award Winner: Dr Rachel Tattersall, Consultant Rheumatologist Rachel is recognised both regionally and nationally as an expert in transition and young adult care. The rheumatology young adult clinic that Rachel has developed with her colleagues ensures young people are identified and prepared for transition at an early stage.

Healthcare Hero Award Winner: Cheryl Wade, Support worker, Intensive Home Nursing service Cheryl always goes above and beyond to ensure patients receive the best care. This was encapsulated when she was at the home of an elderly end of life patient, and went out to buy fish and chips for the lady and her husband as they couldn’t get to the chip shop themselves. The elderly lady passed away soon after, and her husband expressed his gratitude for the fact Cheryl enabled them to have a final meal together.

David joins charity lottery to thank hospital for generations of kidney care A family with a long history of kidney complications has joined the Sheffield Hospitals Lottery, to thank staff for their ‘top notch’ care at the Sheffield Kidney Institute.

Generations of the Hughes family have battled Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) - an inherited kidney disorder which causes fluid-filled cysts to form in the kidneys.

Mum, Gladys Hughes, found out she had PKD in 1971 after an accident resulting in a haemorrhage which needed emergency hospital treatment. Her three children, David, Alan and Ann, also have the disorder.

David admits he ‘thought he’d got away with it,’ but needed a transplant in the summer of 2016. “I wasn’t diagnosed until I was 40, after my blood pressure increased. Due to the history of kidney disease in the family I was referred for an ultrasound scan and blood tests, which found my kidney function was reducing,” David said.

“After diagnosis I needed to go to the renal clinic every few months. When my kidney function dropped to 12 percent I started dialysis, which I needed for two and a half years before a kidney became available from a donor. Thanks to that person, God bless them, my function is now back up to 80 per cent.

“PKD makes you feel tired and listless, it upsets your rhythm.

Transplants are successful in putting symptoms right, but you have to look after yourself; you owe whoever gave you that kidney.

“I was recently at a check-up at the Northern General Hospital when I walked past the new Sheffield Hospitals Charity fundraising hub. I popped in and found out about the charity and its lottery. I signed up straight away, after all the help we’ve had over the years I didn’t hesitate.

“We’ve had such fantastic care and are so privileged that we live near to such a specialist centre so close to where we live.

The staff have done so much for all of my family, they’ve saved all our lives.”

Sheffield Hospitals Charity’s Birthing Pool Appeal reaches its £300,000 target Thanks to the generosity of local people and the amazing support of staff at the Jessops Wing three new birthing pool suites have been created in the Midwifery Led Unit (MLU).

The charity hit its target just under a year after launching an appeal and the Unit now boasts three new rooms with hi-tech pools, their own sound systems and dimmable LED lighting to create a warm and tranquil space for families to stay in during the arrival of their baby.

Mums who have already used the rooms have all been grateful to have had access to such a great facility and to be able to relax and feel completely at home.

Staff at the unit have all played a part in helping Sheffield Hospitals Charity to reach the grand total of £300,000. This has included lots of fundraising activity including a 'Call the Midwife' bike ride which raised over £12,000.

Adele Stanley, the lead midwife at the MLU, said: “It’s fantastic to have these new pools, thanks to the incredible generosity of everyone

who’s donated. The feedback from mums who have used them so far is incredible.

“The pools help them relax so they progress really well, and we now know women’s labours are shorter and less likely to result in interventions like caesarean sections or instrumental delivery when they use one.”
