This edition is packed full of stories about the fantastic things our staff are doing. We recently celebrated their efforts in our first Outstanding Achievement Awards ceremony as employees of the new North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. On pages 10 and 11 you can see who won our awards and who was named as your local Hospital Hero. There were some truly wonderful stories of how our staff went above and beyond for their patients.

Caring for patients inside our hospitals is one thing, but some of our staff are occasionally called upon to put their skills to the test while off duty.

Our front page story about Natalie and David Styles-Hudson is a great example of how being in the right place at the right time can make a huge difference – in this case the difference between life and death. I can only commend the pair of them for being so calm in such a pressured situation. Read the full story on page 3.

Trust executives make pledges for dementia awareness

Two other staff members in the spotlight in this edition are male midwives Matthew Proctor and Carl Allen. Both have shared their experiences working in a female-dominated profession and are encouraging more men to consider midwifery as a career. There are just 188 male midwives in the country. Read their comments on page 5.

The extension to our radiotherapy department is now open – which means we can treat up to 750 more patients closer to home. Read more about it on page 8 including how local schoolchildren have played their part in helping us improve the experience of patients having radiotherapy treatment.

Clinicians save desperately ill tot in mid-air drama Two off duty staff members from Hinchingbrooke Hospital leapt into action to save the life of a stricken toddler who fell ill on a flight from London to Florida.

Natalie and David Styles-Hudson, who are brother in law and sister in law, were jetting out to America with their families when mid-air, the crew requested medical assistance. An 18 month old boy had fallen desperately ill with croup, causing severe breathing difficulties.

Natalie, lead nurse for paediatrics, and David, an experienced senior site manager, quickly realised the little boy was dangerously close to death and the efforts of the cabin crew, who were trained in basic life support, were not going to help.

Natalie said: “When I first saw the boy he was blue and gasping for breath, yet we were three hours from land. We had to work with the drugs that were in the medical kit on the plane. David worked out how to get extra oxygen in him and we administered shots of adrenaline. We had to make an Natalie and David saved the toddler’s life in the air

emergency landing in Bermuda to get him help more quickly.

“I was told that passengers are no longer allowed in the cockpit of a plane since the terror attacks, however they quickly ran some checks on me and then allowed me into the cockpit to talk directly to medics on the ground.

An ambulance met us when we landed in Bermuda and took the boy straight to intensive care where I understand he stayed for two days.”

Fortunately the little boy has made a full recovery.

Natalie, David and their families were able to start their holiday a day later once they caught a connecting flight to Florida from Bermuda. Reflecting on the drama, Natalie added: “I felt so vulnerable. In an emergency department situation I have always had people there to support me, but this time it was just David and I and none of the medicines or equipment we would normally have to hand. Without us there the little boy might have died. I am so glad we could help.”

The Practice Development team have implemented the successful #EndPJParalysis campaign

Trust initiative to be rolled out nationally Trust staff recently took part in the #EndPJParalysis challenge to enable hospital inpatients to enhance their autonomy, safety and dignity by getting up, dressed and moving – a patient centred approach to getting patients back into their own routines, as they would be at home. The challenge aspect used in our hospitals was created by Practice Development team member, Lisa Sharp, who realised that a competition could be implemented between wards to have the most patients up, dressed and moving over 100 days.

Lisa based her idea on a board game which played out on a large whiteboard, allowing the Trust to improve patient care in a fun way. This way of working has been highlighted as good practice by NHS Improvement, who has adopted the idea regionally and will implement it nationally in 2018. Lisa’s whiteboard idea has been turned into an electronic board which will be used to analyse the data input by wards for the national challenge.

The success of the initiative is testimony to the Practice Development Team’s passion and the dedication of our Trust staff in providing the best possible patient care. Lisa says: “This is all about the fundamentals of nursing, the reason we all wanted to do the job. With just three simple things – getting patients up, dressed and moving – we can improve their rate of recovery and quality of care. “#EndPJparalysis is a fantastic initiative and we added a bit of fun to it. It’s been a real team effort and I hope that everyone who has taken part is as proud of themselves as I am of them”.

Winter season

Arming our staff against the ‘flu Making sure our staff are vaccinated against the ‘flu virus is one of the ways we can ensure you don’t leave hospital with more than you came in with! We need to ensure our staff don’t risk passing on the virus and, by offering them a ‘flu jab, we can also help ensure they remain fit and healthy to help us care for an expected increased number of patients over the winter months.

Since October, our Occupational Health team have been leading the staff vaccination programme.

This year they have been supported by an army of ‘peer

vaccinators’ – staff trained to also administer the injections. This helped us to reach more staff over a shorter period of time.

During October, 3,237 members of staff had their flu jab and this has continued into November.

Helping you avoid those Winter ‘ills’ Have you stocked up your medicine cabinet to ensure you have all the essentials to hand should you or a family member fall unwell?

There’s nothing worse than being confined to bed with a heavy cold only to find there is no pain relief or cough medicine in the house.

A small supply of paracetamol or ibuprofen (available as syrup for children) and other remedies will help you treat common ailments such as coughs, colds, sore throats, indigestion, toothache, headaches and constipation. If you have children, don’t forget to include appropriate medicines for them.

Medicine cabinet essentials include: • Painkillers, such as ibuprofen, paracetamol and aspirin • Antihistamines, useful for dealing with allergies, hayfever or insect bites • Anti-diarrheoa tablets, which help with food poisoning or stomach viruses • Indigestion treatments • First Aid kit – including bandages, plasters, a thermometer, antiseptic cream, eyewash and sterile dressings.

Love from Lapland Following the success of our first ever Christmas campaign last year, the Trust is relaunching Love from Lapland with the aim of spreading some festive magic across our hospitals this Christmas.

Meet our male Midwives It has been 40 years since men were first allowed to train as midwives, but there are still very few working in the profession. At the end of March 2017 there were only 188 male midwives in the UK. Out of a total of 43,168 registered midwives, this is just 0.4%.

Of these 188 male midwives, we are lucky enough to employ two. Matthew Proctor, based at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and Carl Allen, based at Peterborough City Hospital.

Matthew Proctor Hinchingbrooke Hospital Matthew has worked as a midwife at Hinchingbrooke Hospital for four years. He has always wanted to be a midwife, something he attributes to his Godmother who also went into the profession. His Mum said he was 8 when Matthew first said he wanted to work with women and babies, but he didn’t enter the profession until later in life as he wasn’t aware that it was an occupation that was open to men.

Matthew trained as a nurse and worked in Oxford before transferring to Kettering where he worked as a pain specialist.

Eventually Matthew undertook the Midwife Matthew Proctor

18 month midwifery conversion course and he was the first man to do so there in 15 years. Training in Kettering was really positive for Matthew as there were two senior male midwives already in post.

Matthew feels he is well supported at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, however the role of the male midwife comes with some additional considerations: “I always make sure I’m very clear about the procedures I’m going to carry out and exactly what they involve. I find this, combined with the offer of a chaperone, puts women at ease. I always make women aware that they can choose to have a female midwife and that I won’t be offended if that’s their choice”.

Carl Allen – Peterborough City Hospital Carl enjoys his role as a Risk Midwife at Peterborough City Hospital.

Originally Carl worked in a variety of caring roles all over the UK and America, before training as a massage therapist and working with pregnant women, which really sparked his interest, so much so that in 2009 he decided to retrain as a midwife.

After completing a placement at Addenbrookes, Carl worked at Hinchingbrooke Hospital for three years, beginning his career by combining working in the maternity unit with working in the community. He became the full-time Hinchingbrooke Community Midwife for Cambourne and is now a Risk Midwife, ensuring safeguards are in place to protect women and their babies. The Risk Team works across the whole Trust, but there are two Risk Midwives at PCH and one at Hinchingbrooke.

During his career Carl has experienced the highs and sometimes the lows of birth: “Every birth is special and unique in its own way, there is nothing that comes close to witnessing a baby meet its mother for the very first time.”

Sometimes things don’t go as planned and the loss of a baby is always very difficult. One of the most important things midwives can do is help families make memories with their babies.

Parents can be provided with a cold cot (known as a cuddle cot), so they can take their baby home for a short time.”

When asked about the advice he would give to other men considering midwifery as a career, Carl said: “For me, the most important part of midwifery is individual care tailored to the family. In my opinion there isn’t any difference between the way a male midwife and a female midwife do their jobs. As midwives we work autonomously with the women we look after and we put our own personal stamp on the way we do things.”

Peterborough City Hospital hostS successful Recruitment Open Day On Saturday 30 September the Trust held a busy Recruitment Open Day at Peterborough City Hospital. The event was a huge success, with 340 potential applicants in attendance.

Staff from various departments within the hospital attended to help the attendees find out about vacancies and opportunities across all Trust sites.

The feedback from attendees was very positive and comments from the public included: “The information given was excellent, well presented and displayed” and “it was so useful to be able to speak to a variety of staff from different departments”.

Hinchingbrooke ophthalmology trial success Hinchingbrooke Hospital has recruited the first UK patient to a new clinical trial that explores an innovative new treatment for glaucoma patients.

The Ophthalmology Department at Hinchingbrooke Hospital is one of 46 sites in Europe taking part in the clinical trial, Mercury 3, run by Aerie Pharmaceuticals Ltd. The trial assesses the safety of a new class of drugs called Rho Kinase inhibitors. These reduce the pressure in the eye caused by Glaucoma, by targeting the meshwork that supports the eye.

Wedding bells for Amazon colleagues This summer, Peterborough City Hospital colleagues Consultant Paediatrician, Catherine McKnight and Amazon Ward Staff Nurse, Gabor Kovacs were married in a ceremony at Holy Trinity Church in Orton Longueville, Peterborough followed by a reception at Nene Park.

The happy couple were having their official photographs taken locally to the hospital, so they stopped by to have some photos taken outside the building

where they spend their working lives.

Catherine said: “We thought it would be fun to have a photo with the hospital in the background as we both work here and it was nice to be able to show our friends and family.

Professor Rupert Bourne, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Hinchingbrooke Hospital and Chief Investigator in the UK for the study, said: “Glaucoma occurs when the fluid in the eye cannot drain properly, resulting in an increase of pressure inside the eye. If this isn’t detected early on, the pressure can damage the optic nerve and result in loss of vision.

“We are very excited to have recruited the first UK patient to the study. Research is pivotal in ensuring that, as healthcare professionals, we are providing our patients with the most up-todate and effective treatment.”

Gabor was also a finalist in our recent Hospital Hero awards, however he and Catherine were away on their honeymoon and he was unable to attend.

Stamford Focus

Friends for life The Friends of Stamford Hospital played a significant part in promoting the improvements to the hospital and have made many substantial donations to the Trust. Recently these have included a new bladder scanner (funded together with the Burghley Family Trust), to support the Trust’s urology service, and a cardio ‘Grab Bag’. The grab bag contains everything needed to treat someone having a cardiac arrest in one transportable unit.

Stamford Hospital Open Day attracts 400 visitors Around 400 people made their way to Stamford Hospital on Saturday 14 October to see the new facilities, following its £2m redevelopment. Stamford residents of all ages, as well as staff past and present, toured the hospital.

All the departments were open and there was a wide range of things to see and do, including dressing up in the theatre and having a go at an ‘operation’; testing your grip strength in the gym, learning how magnets are used in diagnostic imaging and finding out how the MRI scanner can tell us so much about what is going on inside our bodies.

and photographs (some dating back to the 1800s), was a big attraction.

In the Minor Injuries Unit children enjoyed finding out how we fix broken bones, and made their own Halloween finger puppets. Trust staff demonstrated bed hoist equipment and eye equipment while St John Ambulance cadets demonstrated CPR in the Outpatients area. There were information stands, cake, book and bric a brac stalls, which raised £380 for the Friends of Stamford Hospital.

The event was rounded off by the cutting of a special ‘Stamford Hospital’ cake by Matron and Site Manager Sue Brooks and Trust CEO Stephen Graves. Many thanks to everyone who helped make the day a huge success.

Chaplaincy Service at Stamford Hospital In October the Trust said farewell to Margaret Chirico, who retired as Lay Chaplain at Stamford Hospital.

Lead Chaplain Helen Fyall said: “Margaret has served the hospital faithfully since 2003, visiting the John Van Geest Ward weekly, caring for patients, relatives and staff in her prayerful and compassionate way. She was involved in training other volunteers over the years and it has been a joy to work with her.

“Tricia Brockhouse has worked alongside Margaret as a ward visitor, and John Brian and Debs Jones have recently joined the team. All are members at St.George’s Church and it is hoped with a bigger team we can develop the service to include patient waiting areas, more staff support and a quiet space too.”

PROVIDING SUPPORT

Fractures Direct Discharge team

Fractures Direct Discharge pathway launched The new Direct Discharge pathway for adults with fractures was launched in October 2017.

The aim is to be able to treat simple fractures and discharge patients without the need for a follow-up appointment, unless the patient has any worries or concerns they would like to discuss. Patients will be given a leaflet containing advice and a number to call for any questions they may have. This will mean appointments will be available sooner for patients who need to be reviewed by the orthopaedic team. This process is already successful in other Trusts and is shown to work effectively to free up appointments for patients requiring further treatment or care.

The Emergency Department, orthopaedic and fracture clinic teams are working closely to ensure the pathway is operating effectively.

New Cancer information centre opens at Hinchingbrooke A new Macmillan information service was launched in the Woodlands Centre at Hinchingbrooke Hospital

by Huntingdon Deputy Mayor, Cllr Bill Hensley.

The new service is offered face to face by trained volunteers. It covers a range of topics including benefits/welfare advice, carer issues, dietary advice, financial support, end of life care, complementary therapies and local information and support.

Eileen said: “When people are diagnosed with cancer they have many questions, not all of them about the disease. Cancer affects every aspect of a person’s life, so the information patients and families need can be very diverse.”

The Deputy Mayor officially opens the Woodlands Centre

The service is run by Eileen Murphy, Survivorship Project Manager, with a team of eight volunteers. Eileen and the volunteer managers are actively recruiting volunteers in order to offer a wider service, to include visiting wards. Anyone who is affected by cancer is welcome to use the new information service.

Radiotherapy expansion officially opened at Peterborough City Hospital The new expansion to the radiotherapy unit at Peterborough City Hospital was officially opened in October, by fundraisers Mark Cross and Lesley Kalina.

The extra bunker built earlier this year has enabled an additional linear accelerator, the machine used to provide the radiotherapy, to be installed at the hospital. “We now have three linacs here at PCH” says Jamie Fairfoul, Head of Radiotherapy Physics. “Last year we treated around 1000 patients and this extra machine will enable us to treat an additional 750, meaning those patients don’t need to travel to neighbouring hospitals during

“Art is a form of therapy and the children have put so much effort into creating some really thought-provoking pictures for our patients to enjoy.”

SERVICE IMPROVEMENTS

Give us your views on your hospital experience Patients receiving care at Hinchingbrooke Hospital can now feed back their comments on their care and experience via iWantGreatCare, which is a national independent service.

Our other two hospitals at Peterborough and Stamford have been using the iWantGreatCare system since 2013. iWantGreatCare invites patients to leave feedback on their care, either with a specific healthcare professional or department. Eight of the Trust’s consultants across all specialities have recently been awarded the ‘Certificate of Excellence’ from Dr Neil Bacon of iWantGreatCare. These awards were based on the feedback received from their patients. This award recognises excellence by those individuals who have put

New Outpatient Services The Trust now provides outpatient and imaging services at two local community hospitals - the Princess of Wales Hospital in Ely and Doddington Hospital in Doddington. We will also provide imaging services at North Cambridgeshire Hospital in Wisbech, as well as dermatology services at the City Care Centre in Peterborough.

These changes simply mean that the staff have transferred to become part of North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust. The services will be provided by the same teams to the same high standards.

Stephen Graves, chief executive, said: “We have been working closely to integrate these services with existing Trust IT and imaging systems and processes. In total across these services approximately 50 staff have joined the Trust. The majority of clinicians who visit these hospitals are already Trust staff, so this will enable us to work together even more closely for the benefit of patients.

“We are delighted to support these important patient services and the staff who will continue to deliver them in local communities.”

Trust Executives become Dementia Friends At July’s Public Board meeting, a presentation about Dementia Friends Training was given by Alison Gray, Specialist Nurse, and Sophia Stanworth from the Alzheimer’s Society. The Executive and Non-Executive Directors agreed at the meeting to have further Dementia Friends training.

Dementia is not part of normal ageing, it is a term used to describe any condition where a variety of brain functions such as memory, thinking, recognition, language, planning and personality, deteriorate over time. Everyone gets more forgetful as they get older, but that does not mean that they have dementia.

The first training session was held in September, when Alison and Sophia returned to give more detailed advice to the Directors. They learned about what it’s like to live with dementia, and how to turn that understanding into action, no matter how small.

After the session, the team were asked to turn their understanding of dementia into a practical action by making a pledge. Some

of their pledges were: ‘to wear my dementia Friends badge and ensure we invest in dementia friendly environments, which I will visit to meet and talk to people’ ‘I will spend time on the dementia friendly wards as part of my Back to the Floor shifts’ These pledges have been added to a poster to be displayed around the hospital, and we plan to add pledges from the rest of

the Executive members as they each attend future training sessions. We are proud as a Trust to support the Alzheimer’s Society in raising awareness of people living with dementia.

Our hospital heroes

Our hospital heroes unveiled!

Staff from all three hospitals recently came together to celebrate the first Outstanding Achievement Awards of the newly-formed North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.

The ceremony honoured the achievements of our wonderful staff and took place on Friday 20 October at the Marriott Hotel in Peterborough. Staff were treated to a well-deserved sit-down meal before the ceremony began, with a disco to continue the celebrations afterwards.

As part of the awards, patients were asked to nominate their hospital heroes, staff who had gone above and beyond in delivering care and compassion, and the winners were announced during the ceremony: Deputy Charge Nurse Pedro Caetano was named Peterborough City Hospital’s Hero for the outstanding care and compassion he showed to the family of a patient who was in his last days of life. The family nominated Pedro for what they considered to be care above and beyond the call of duty – especially since he made a point of returning from his last shift before going off to get married to say his own goodbye to the family and the patient.

Consultant Diabetologist Dr Samson Oyibo was highly commended as Peterborough City Hospital Hero by a patient for whom he has cared for the past 10 years. The patient even noted that Dr Oyibo supported them with long-distance telephone consultations while

the patient was away at university, and this support meant they could maintain as normal a life as possible despite their condition.

STAFF AWARDS care she gave to a couple who tragically lost their baby son at 37 weeks. The couple nominated Vicky for the way she supported them both through the birth and the days afterwards, citing that she helped them savour memories despite being completely distraught.

Consultant paediatrician Dr Nik Johnson was highly commended as Hinchingbrooke Hospital Hero for the care he has given to two children from the same family for a number of years. The parent who nominated him said he has left no stone unturned in the care he has given to the family.

Consultant Dermatologist Dr Vanessa Smith was named Stamford and Rutland Hospital Hero 2017 for the care she gave to a patient who had been struggling to see any improvement with a long-standing health condition. The patient nominated Dr Smith for the way she put together a treatment plan that has improved life considerably after years of suffering.

devising a way to ease the anxiety of young patients undergoing a general anaesthetic.

More staff picked up awards at the event, which was attended by 120 staff members from across the three hospitals. These were nominated by their fellow colleagues in recognition of their achievements throughout the year.

Stamford Hospital Porter Ben Inman won the Outstanding Individual of the Year award for his quick thinking actions that saved an extremely distressed patient from harming themselves in an incident at the hospital earlier this year.

The Peterborough City Hospital security team won Team of the Year for the way they calmed a potentially volatile situation with a patient in the Emergency Department.

Sophie Cushieri, ward manager on A10, won the Putting Patients First award for leading her ward in arranging the wedding of a terminally ill patient in his final days.

Nurse recruitment project officer Sabrina Galietti won the Improve and Develop award for organising the first Trust recruitment event earlier in the year.

Awards for Peterborough City Hospital Emergency Department In September, representatives from the Peterborough City Hospital Emergency Department attended a faculty day at the School of Emergency Medicine East of England awards. The awards were in celebration of the organisation’s 50 anniversary and our hard working team came away with a number of prizes, including: Col Andrew Cope (now retired) – Services to Emergency Medicine award Miss Cilla Reid (now retired) – Services to Emergency Medicine award Dr Dhakshinamoorthy Vijayasankar – Trainer of the Year

John Orbine – a tribute John Orbine was a much-loved porter at Peterborough City Hospital, and Peterborough District Hospital before that, working with us for nearly 16 years, well past his retirement date.

Sadly at the beginning of the year, John passed away suddenly on his way to work, and his colleagues were so keen to honour him that over 90 nominations for a posthumous Unsung Hero award were received.

John’s wife, daughter and son-in-law came in to the hospital in September and were presented with a trophy in his honour.

They were very touched to receive the trophy, along with a file full of the nominations sent in to read at their leisure, and to reminisce with staff about his time at our hospitals.

John will be remembered as a dedicated, hardworking, respectful person with a passionate approach to giving all whom he encountered the best experience in sometimes difficult circumstances. His sense of humour was appreciated and he was well respected by his colleagues, peers and by Trust management and will be fondly remembered by all of them.

Volunteers at Hinchingbrooke introduce new service for palliative care patients A new voluntary service is being rolled out at Hinchingbrooke Hospital for end of life patients and their families.

“We have introduced an End of Life volunteer service to meet a need identified by our palliative care team,” says Barry Pridmore, Volunteer Services Manager. “It is a highly emotional and distressing time for patients and their families and the support volunteers provide in offering a kind face and a listening ear can lighten the burden.”

The service aims to offer patients reaching the end of their lives, and their families, the chance to request a specialist volunteer to visit them at the bedside, giving family members the chance to have a break and help provide support during their final days.

Jessie Keuneman is a local volunteer who started in her role in September: “I know it might sound odd to some but I absolutely love it. It’s incredible to feel like you’re making a real difference

to someone’s life and it’s very humbling to be included in such an intense moment in their lives.”

Team commended for putting the spotlight on diabetes Peterborough City Hospital Obstetrics and Gynaecology team

Obstetrics and Gynaecology team ranked in country’s top 10 by trainees The Peterborough City Hospital Obstetrics and Gynaecology team has been highly commended by the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, for the experience it provides to trainees.

The accolade was awarded by the Specialty Education Advisory Committee of the Royal College, based on feedback from trainees undertaking gynaecology training in the past year.

Our team was ranked among the top 10 performing NHS Trusts out of 140 units in the country for gynaecology training. In addition the team was also highly commended for its overall performance as a training centre.

Mr Amir Sriemevan, Consultant and College Tutor for the department, said:

“Our team of consultants, midwives, nurses, secretaries and support staff have pulled together to ensure that trainees have the best possible experience during their time with us. It is fantastic news that our trainees have consistently been so positive on how they benefit from this experience.

The Diabetes Team at Hinchingbrooke Hospital received a highly commended award from the Diabetes Quality in Care Programme for their work during the recent Hypo Awareness Week.

The team worked hard to ensure as many of their colleagues as possible were aware of the dangers of hypoglycaemia and were able to recognise the signs, in order to treat it as a medical emergency.

During Hypo Awareness Week, held in October, the team held an information stand in the Garden Restaurant at Hinchingbrooke Hospital, visited ward areas and dropped in to the student nurses forum, to provide details and learning modules about diabetes.

Hypo boxes were also updated, which are located on each of the wards and contain treatments including orange juice, dextrose tablets, biscuits and written guidelines.

Sue Sequenza, Lead Diabetes Nurse Specialist at Hinchingbrooke, said: “We had a really positive response from all of the staff that we saw during the week and hope that the information we provided will mean improved care and management of our patients with Diabetes while they are in Hospital.”

“We are keen to ensure trainees can work in a supportive environment, have access to educational resources and are well supervised during their time with us. Our time invested in them is clearly well spent.”

Dr Kanchan Rege, Trust Medical Director, said: “Congratulations to the team on this achievement. It is a testament to their hard work and passion and is well deserved.”

Hospital chosen as finalists in prestigious cleaning awards Hinchingbrooke’s cleaning contractors MITIE are finalists in the Kimberly-Clarke Professional Golden Service Awards 2018, category: Healthcare Establishment with more than 250 beds.

This follows the first stage of judging by The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc).

Winners will be announced at the London Hilton, on Thursday 8 March 2018.

Five day trek around the Grand Canyon raises £4,000 for pancreatic cancer Hinchingbrooke specialist cancer nurse, Julie Ingmire, has completed a five day trek around the Grand Canyon, raising nearly £4,000 for Pancreatic Cancer UK. Julie raised money in a variety of ways, including selling cake in the hospital, which alone raised £214.

Saying goodbye to Roy after 41 years of NHS service When the new Hinchingbrooke Hospital opened in 1984, Roy came to commission the new medical equipment and stayed at the hospital. He has now retired after working at Hinchingbrooke for 33 years.

Roy said: “Life as a medical engineer never lost its appeal, you don’t know what’s going to happen when you arrive at work in the morning. The key qualities for success in the job are tenacity and determination.”

Roy saw great changes in technology in the course of his career. He observed that over the years equipment has become smaller, more versatile and safer.

Julie raised £214 by selling cakes

Julie said: “It was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever done. The last day was particularly difficult, trekking four miles almost straight up a cliff face in 30 degree heat.

The money raised by Julie will help in the following ways: • £40 could pay for an information stand in a hospital with volunteers to staff this.

• £50 could help find tailored treatments without harmful side effects.

• £100 could help to fund a day’s research by one of Pancreatic Cancer UK’s Future Leaders.

• £2,000 could support a month of research to develop a new app to support anyone affected by pancreatic cancer.

• £2,800 could pay for the running of Pancreatic Cancer UK’s Support Line for a week.

Rheumatology patient cycles to Holland Rheumatology patient Paul Martin, a 56 year old retired RAF officer, rode his bicycle all the way to Holland and back, and raised £1,918 for the Rheumatology Department at Peterborough City Hospital.

Paul set off from Market Deeping on 31 May and returned four days later – a remarkable journey. The money Paul raised will go towards buying a new ultrasound

machine for the Trust.

Dr Sandeep Dahiya, Consultant Rheumatologist, said: “Ultrasound in Rheumatology helps diagnose inflammatory arthritis, such as Rheumatism, early. Starting treatment promptly can significantly improve a patient’s prognosis.

We are very grateful to Paul for his impressive efforts to raise funds for our Trust.”

The Friends of Peterborough Hospital were really grateful to receive a cheque for over £5,000 from Pill Pushers, a pantomime group who used to perform in the old Peterborough District Hospital.

Charity’s huge boost to help cancer patients The Peterborough Cancer Treatment Appeal (PCTA) recently donated £60,000 to enable Pathology at Peterborough City Hospital to purchase state-ofthe-art equipment that will help shorten waiting times for patients awaiting a cancer diagnosis.

The PCTA has raised £2.4million for Peterborough City Hospital and formerly Peterborough District Hospital since 1983, which has provided

Pill Pushers began performing in 1970 and ran for 42 years, holding the accolade of being the longest running hospital panto in the country.

Their cries of “oh no he doesn’t” and “it’s behind you” were last heard in 2012 when they sadly performed their last Christmas panto at Peterborough City Hospital. The donated funds were raised from ticket sales, raffles and donations from the audience.

Claire McIntyre, Chief Pharmacist, said: “We decided to donate the money to the Friends as this means the funds will go towards new equipment and initiatives in the hospital and will benefit the patients, which was also the ethos of Pill Pushers.”

Anonymous knitter’s generous donations A local resident, who preferred to remain anonymous, has been regularly knitting bed jackets for patients at Peterborough City Hospital for many years.

The beautiful jackets are works of art and have been donated to various wards and used for patients who are chilly.

Tausif Khan, a Chaplain at PCH who received this last bed jacket to distribute to a patient, marvelled at the detail in the item. “I really think that knitting

this type of item is an art. It’s so beautiful; what a treat for our patients to have been given these bed jackets for so long.

Such a marvellous lady.”

At the age of 97, our donor decided this would be her last one and sadly, the lady passed away a few weeks after finishing this one. The Trust would like to thank her, via her family, for her time, effort and thoughtfulness over the years.

Our public meetings are rotated around our three hospital sites, to give more local residents the chance to attend without having to travel too far.

Huntingdon members asked to vote for new public governor Members of our Foundation Trust, who live in the Huntingdonshire area, will be asked to vote in an upcoming election to appoint a public governor for Hinchingbrooke Hospital.

A vacancy arose in the autumn for a new public governor to join our five other public governors who represent Huntingdonshire residents on the Trust’s Council of Governors.

in the Huntingdonshire area, you will be asked to register your vote in the election which runs from 29 November to 20 December 2017.

Our governors play an important role in our hospitals – they are responsible for holding to account our non-executive directors on the Trust board. They also play a key role in supporting care quality campaigns, such as the 15-steps challenge on our inpatient wards.
