Recognition for Trust staff in New Year Honours Two colleagues from LTHT were named in the Queen’s New Year Honours List in December 2018.

Professor Simon Kay, Consultant Plastic Surgeon, received an OBE and Lisa Beaumont, Therapeutic and Specialist Play Manager, was awarded a British Empire Medal (BEM).

Lisa Beaumont is a well-known face around Leeds Children’s Hospital having worked there for more than 30 years. Lisa heads up a team of 23 play specialists who are committed to supporting children and young people throughout their hospital care.

“I speak for the whole Trust when I say that we are very proud of both Simon and Lisa” Simon Kay is probably best known for his pioneering work on hand transplantation. He and his team performed the UK’s first hand transplant in 2012 and have gone on to perform on another four patients since. Simon is also a leading expert in hand surgery for children. He has developed the UK’s largest children’s hand surgery service at Leeds Children’s Hospital where his work has helped hundreds of children to

Lisa was nominated for her BEM because of the amazing contribution she has made to charity. Every year, Lisa organises for a team of 35-40 children and young people from the hospital to take part in the British Transplant Games, in addition to managing the Team GB Juniors at the World Transplant Games. Lisa is also the children’s representative for Transplant Sport.

Chief Executive Julian Hartley said: “I speak for the whole Trust when I say that we are very proud of both Simon and Lisa; we are honoured to work alongside them and grateful for their fantastic dedication and commitment to patient care.”

Welcome to the first Bulletin of 2019!

Here at Leeds, I’m incredibly proud of the way all our staff collaborate across diverse roles and staff groups to contribute to the delivery of our services. This is really at the heart of the Leeds Way and ensures our patients receive the very best.

One such group are our junior doctors, and in this issue of Bulletin, we’ll be meeting just some of these individuals who do such a fantastic job for our patients.

We’ll be hearing insightful and inspiring stories from doctors including Catriona McNichol, who helped diagnose the first case of MERS in Leeds, and Greg Bailey, who rowed across the Atlantic with his brother early last year. We’ll also be finding out just what, exactly, a junior doctor’s role is - along with dispelling a few myths!

Elsewhere in this issue we’ll be taking a look at what our Charity, Leeds Cares, have got planned for the coming year, as well as the latest news, donation stories, and staff farewells from the past few months.

Leeds Loves Junior Doctors!

In this special edition of Bulletin we seek to uncover the facts about junior doctors, and celebrate their amazing contribution to the NHS.

So, what is a junior doctor?

Ask a member of the general public what a junior doctor is and you’re sure to get some wild misconceptions about 16 year old school-leavers in white coats walking the hospital corridors!

This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Junior doctors make up half of all the doctors in hospitals in England.

The phrases ‘juniors’ and ‘trainees’ really don’t do this group of individuals justice - so much so that Ministers are currently considering a nationwide move to using terminology which more accurately reflects their skills and expertise.

Junior doctors are highly trained and competent medics; they are medical graduates in further training and not yet qualified to practice independently without supervision but may have a decade of experience working in medicine.

How long do junior doctors train for?

For starters, a medical student has to graduate their degree before they can even begin their training. This takes four to six years and upon graduation, they receive provisional GMC registration to enable them to go on to training.

The first two years as a junior doctor are known as the Foundation Programme.

This is comprised of two years of training known as Foundation Year 1 and 2 (FY1 and FY2). Training includes six to eight rotations working in different parts of the hospital and different fields of medicine, for up to 16 weeks at a time.

Of the 50,000 junior doctors in England, 58% are in the most senior bracket: specialty training.

Once FY1 and FY2 are complete, junior doctors enter specialty training choosing one of two routes, and taking anything from three to eight years to complete their training and qualify as a consultant.

Specialty training years are depicted by the moniker ST; for example the job title ST1 for a doctor in their first year of specialty training.

How do training rotations work?

Health Education England is the organisation responsible for developing the medical, dental and healthcare workforce of today and tomorrow. They deliver the Foundation Programme which acts as a bridge between medical school and specialty training. It ensures that trainees can put in practice as a doctor the knowledge, skills and attitudes they learnt as a student and creates the opportunity to gain experience working in a number of different specialties.

There are six trusts within the Foundation Programme for the West Yorkshire Locality Scheme (including Harrogate) and junior doctors will rotate between them during their first two years to ensure they receive comprehensive experience.

Maggie’s Centre ‘tops out’ in construction milestone The new cancer support centre from Maggie’s Yorkshire came a step closer to being realised in November 2018.

Trust Chair, Linda Pollard, joined benefactors, fundraisers and charity staff to celebrate ‘topping out’ - the moment at which the highest point of the new structure is reached during its construction.

The first rotations are often said to be the hardest part for both trainees and the teams they work with. Just as they begin to familiarise themselves and to form relationships, junior doctors move to a new CSU - or a new hospital entirely- and have to start again; learning their way around and forming new relationships whilst learning about the new clinical field they are working in.

It’s not just hospitals that have junior doctors. In March 2017 there were 34,000 GPs in England, 5000 of which were junior doctors.

Being a doctor in training can be an isolating experience. Many trainees are new to Leeds - let alone LTHT - which is why the support they receive from our teams and the teams on wards and in clinics is so vitally important.

What roles do junior doctors fulfil?

Junior doctors are responsible for many of the services we provide so to group them under one category doesn’t do justice to the range of experience and skills they have.

With half of our medical workforce made up of junior doctors, we simply couldn’t do what we do without them!

Junior doctors support every facet of our clinical work: you could see a junior doctor in A&E, have them diagnose you in a clinic appointment, or put you under anaesthetic in an operating theatre.

Leeds is the best in West Yorkshire for doctor training, say trainees Each year, the General Medical Council (GMC) undertakes a satisfaction survey asking all doctors in training for their views. This helps make sure doctors in training receive high quality training in a safe and effective clinical environment.

The unique organic design of the building, which is now emerging, was informed by the philosophy of the charity’s founder, Maggie Keswick Jencks - that people should not “lose the joy of living in the fear of dying”.

The new multi-million pound project will complete in Spring 2019, culminating in a centre supporting cancer patients, their families and friends, and will compliment the support currently offered by the Sir Robert Ogden Macmillan Centre.

In the results of the 2017 survey, Leeds Teaching Hospitals was rated as the highest in West Yorkshire for trainee satisfaction and the second highest in the whole of Yorkshire and Humber.

Name the Gritter competition

Over 300 nominations were received from staff in the Name the Gritter competition which took place before Christmas. The shortlist went out to a public vote on social media where 1,900 people chose their favourite name from the list.

The top three winners were: Slip Not, Florence Grittingale and Gritical Care, with Slip Not being chosen as the winner!

You might have already seen the plucky Slip Not out and about this winter, keeping the black ice away and responding to the cold weather warnings that have been in place.

Life as a junior doctor

Glaswegian Catriona thinks Yorkshire is a good place for a Scot to settle thanks to the friendly people, fantastic countryside and the real ale!

Catriona McNicol isn’t your typical junior doctor.

Having had a first career as a marketing consultant based in London, Catriona was at Glastonbury Festival when she had what she describes as an epiphany - realising her desire was to do something more fulfilling.

With two degrees already under her belt, Catriona went back to college to undertake an Access to Medicine course; specifically aimed at supporting people with an unrelated degree into a career in medicine.

After foundation training, a year in psychiatry, three years in histopathology and nine months working in ED, Catriona realised that she wanted to pursue a career as a General Practitioner because, as she put it, “you can have that continuity with patients throughout their care, it’s rewarding”. She continues, “It’s an exciting challenge. As a GP you don’t have the raft of immediate tests available in hospital, there is a lot more risk management in the role and sometimes

you have to make the decision to manage that risk by referring the patient to the ED. But, for every patient sent to ED by a GP, there are a multitude that have been successfully kept out of hospital.”

The training for GPs is different to hospital specialities in that trainees are required to undertake both hospital and community-based training, giving a much broader perspective. Today, Catriona is

It will make you a stronger and more resilient doctor”. completing her ED training which lasts for 6 months and, she says, it is “nice to understand the cross-over of patients between primary and secondary care”.

The role of a junior doctor is not without its personal and professional challenges.

As many of us will recognise, the pressure

on NHS services is greater than ever and the acuity and complexity of patient cases means working extra hard to ensure they receive the most appropriate care.

“Being a junior doctor is harder than anything I’ve ever done before; dealing with the highs and lows and the challenging rotas,” says Catriona, “The responsibility of making decisions often weighs heavy but for the most part I can say I have felt well supported by senior clinicians during my medical training. It means you can grow and push yourself but with that safety net of knowing there is someone to back you up.”

Indeed, within her first few weeks working in ED, Catriona became part of a case that took the international media spotlight when she helped to diagnose the UK’s first case of Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERSCoV) since 2012.

MERS-CoV is a highly infectious respiratory illness which is named by the World Health Organization as a major global health risk because of its

propensity to spread quickly with a high fatality rate.

One Sunday afternoon, a patient was brought into ED with what Catriona describes as straightforward community-acquired pneumonia.

However, something didn’t feel quite right and, after taking a full history, she decided to source isolate the patient and seek a second opinion from Registrar Dr Junaid Ali. “It just happened that I was the one who picked up the patient’s file. After taking a history and examining the patient, I was comfortable starting treatment but something about their recent travels made me think I needed to discuss the case further with Junaid. He suggested ruling out MERS-CoV and we sought advice from the infectious diseases team.”

Thanks to Catriona and Junaid’s quick thinking, the patient was appropriately cared for; reducing the risk to other patients and staff, and ensuring the best course of treatment was given, leading to a positive outcome for the patient.

Coming face-to-face with a deadly disease would strike fear into the hearts of many, but for Catriona and her colleagues it is part and parcel of what they do. Nobody is left to work alone and it is this approach that makes the difference, “Every junior doctor wants constructive feedback,” Catriona says, “I can only speak for the ED but in our handovers at the end of a shift the consultant always makes time to share a few words of appreciation and positivity.

But, it was only when I heard that Public Health England were really impressed with how we’d handled the patient’s case that I allowed myself a little pat on the back - I was proud of how we’d worked as a team.”

Innovation in digital pathology at Leeds is a crucial step to faster and better diagnosis of cancer LTHT in partnership with the University of Leeds announced in October 2018 a critical milestone in going digital, by scanning every glass slide they produce. The milestone represents a major step towards achieving faster and accurate diagnosis for cancer patients in the future.

The Pathology Department at St. James’s is one of the largest in the UK, processing over 1,000 pathology slides a day, and is now digitally scanning every slide thanks to their partnership with Leica Biosystems. The step-by-step process each slide goes through at Leeds has been rigorously tested and received ISO15189 (International Organisation for Standardisation) accreditation laying the foundations for national guidelines in using digital pathology.

Dr Darren Treanor, Consultant Pathologist, said: “The way we are digitising pathology services in Leeds enables us to produce the quality images pathologists need to diagnose patients quickly and safely. Going digital not only allows the pathologists to do their work on a computer, but it also unlocks the possibility of using the computer to help make the diagnosis, offering huge potential for the future.”

Pathology slides contain sections of tissue, specially stained so they can be assessed by a pathologist, who can identify whether the slides contain evidence of cancer or other diseases.

These images help pathologists and

physicians diagnose cancer, assess the severity of the disease and work out the best course of treatment for patients.

The traditional approach used by pathologists to diagnose cancer has been to view glass slides under the microscope. This method has presented challenges including transportation of slides, storage, and sharing of information with other pathologists for a second opinion. Digital pathology overcomes these challenges, allowing the process to be carried out electronically.

Digital pathology is also a key area for the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to speed up or improve diagnosis. In the future, computer programmes could help to detect small areas of cancer that have spread to lymph nodes, better quantify and measure tumours, and rapidly direct pathologists to areas of abnormality in the tissue sample.

This digital transformation has been made possible thanks to a partnership with cancer diagnostics company, Leica Biosystems and has also been backed with £1m from Leeds Cares, the charity that supports LTHT to provide exceptional healthcare.

To date, 200,000 slides from patients at Leeds Hospitals have been digitally scanned. An archive of 386,000 anonymised digital slides, housed by the University of Leeds for research and teaching, represents the largest collection of its kind in the UK.

Catriona even has a few words of wisdom for colleagues as she reflects on her own experiences, “My advice for other junior doctors is: don’t be afraid to try new paths, there are so many great things to do in medicine. It will make you a stronger and more resilient doctor”.

“Be kind to one another too sometimes we are so focused on getting the job done that we forget to do this.

How one junior doctor and his brother rowed across the Atlantic Ocean in the challenge of a lifetime

Greg Bailey undertook the challenge of a lifetime in March 2018 when he rowed with his brother, Jude, across the Atlantic Ocean entirely unsupported.

The duo, known internationally as the Ocean Brothers, raised £113,000 and set a Guinness World Record after finishing their 3,000 mile voyage.

Greg has worked as a locum in the Emergency Department at St James’s for two years. He and his brother went through nine months of intense training and preparation in the run-up to their epic row from Gran Canaria to Barbados, but even then, the feat was far from plain sailing.

Here’s Greg in his own words: “At the outset we felt very underqualified and out of our comfort zones.

When we were about to depart we actually felt quite terrified. You can train to be physically resilient, but to be emotionally resilient in such adverse conditions is much harder. As such we kept the send-off low key as we didn’t want that extra emotional weight.

“The first couple of weeks were incredibly hard on both of us. The first two days we were unable to sleep at all. There were a lot of big ships passing very close to us and it was really uncertain whether they could see us in

our tiny rowboat.

“Things started breaking within a few days of setting off. A small leak in the back of the cabin meant we lost all our electronics. Everything failed GPS, direction, and steering were all compromised. For the rest of the trip we were forced to steer manually, which meant rowing with one arm and steering with the other.

“After this, the water maker broke, and as we only had a handheld pump as backup, we had to spend five hours each day pumping seawater into the eight litres of drinking water we needed to sustain us.

“The first two weeks were very demoralising. The weather was terrible - we were facing high winds and 30ft waves. We felt very nauseous and confined, and there were times when we could do nothing more than lay in

our cabins. I think if there was a way out at that point we would have taken it. But maritime law is very clear - rescue should only be requested in case of a lifethreatening emergency - and despite our problems, this was not the case. Our only option was to continue on regardless.

“We set out on our voyage to put to rest the memory of my step-father - and Jude’s father - Pete Massey, and find some solitude where we could reflect on his life.”

“Once we made it halfway - at four weeks - things started to improve.

Despite our continuing difficulties, we had adjusted enough to our conditions where we could carry on. We held a brief celebration at that halfway point and after that, things were largely plain sailing.

“We set out on our voyage to put to rest the memory of my step-father and Jude’s father - Pete Massey, and find some solitude where we could reflect on his life. Remarkably, we were followed by a little blackbird for the entire trip that flew with us and perched on the rowboat. Of course, we named it Pete.

“Arriving at Barbardos was a surreal experience. The overriding feeling was one of elation and sheer joy, and it was amazing to be greeted by our family and friends. I found I was overwhelmed by gratitude for the simplest of things being able to get a glass of water from a tap, standing on ground that wasn’t constantly in motion, ordering a plate

“My colleagues were very excited and happy for me when I returned to work. Of course they all wanted to know what happened and were very curious to hear the story. For me, having told the story so many times already to press and sponsors, it was really nice just to chat amongst friends without expectations.

“No one is ever ready for something like this - you could never say ‘I’m ready to row across the Atlantic’ - you just can’t.

The driving force is deciding you can.

There’s a great quote from Henry Ford which says: ‘Whether you think you can, or think you can’t, you’re right.’ You’ve just got to get on and do it, and I think that’s true whoever you are.

“I absolutely would do it again. I would love to do another rowing venture in the future. Other than that I’d be interested in anything - I’m up for the next challenge!”

“Since getting back to work, I’ve certainly found night shifts are a lot easier having got so used to being sleep deprived all the time! I definitely think I’m more emotionally resilient now and I’m better equipped to deal with challenging situations.”

Back at St James’s, how does Greg feel he’s changed?

“During the challenge I feel I glimpsed something of what astronauts call the ‘overview effect’ - realising just how finite the earth we live on really is. This

is something that has really helped shape my outlook on life and work. I feel I now have a more balanced view of things and I’m more patient with myself and with others.

“Since getting back to work, I’ve certainly found night shifts are a lot easier having got so used to being sleep deprived all the time! I definitely think I’m more emotionally resilient now and I’m better equipped to deal with challenging situations. Sometimes it’s easy to forget the bigger picture when trawling through your jobs list, and an important lesson I’ve taken from the row is to keep a broader perspective of life.

“For new doctors rotating into their first placement I do have some advice, which is something my old pharmacology lecturer told me: Hundreds of thousands have done it before you and hundreds of thousands will do it after you. It’s a challenging transition but it’s one that is far from uncommon. It’s perfectly normal to feel overwhelmed. Just keep talking to everyone and it will definitely get easier after the first few months.”

Ministerial visits shine a light on innovative practice in Leeds Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care was “blown away” by digital advancements across services at LTHT when he visited in October 2018.

The Secretary of State was shown around J23 - the Trust’s exemplar Digital Ward - where he met with the ward team and saw first-hand how they use the Electronic Health Record (EHR), the PPM+ mobile app, as well as being given a demonstration of Scan4Safety. He was also introduced to the team behind digitising 100% of diagnostic slides in Leeds, through a partnership with Leica.

The Secretary of the State also visited the LGI where he met some of the Emergency Department team and colleagues from the Yorkshire Ambulance Service to see the new digital ambulance handover in action. He heard from the Trust’s Junior Doctor Body and the work they have been doing to improve the working lives of junior doctors, as well as finding out about the Leeds Improvement Method and the benefits this has brought to teams across the Trust.

The Secretary of State left some fantastic feedback following his visit, saying how incredibly impressed he was by what he had seen during his time with us.

Also in October, the Trust hosted a special visit from Rt Hon Anne Milton, Minister

for Skills and Apprenticeships, at St James’s. A former nurse, the Minister has a keen interest in healthcare and was visiting the city as part of a wider visit to the Yorkshire region.

Whilst at the Trust, the Minister met with three of the Trust’s nurse apprentices and two nurse associates. The nurse apprenticeship programme combines four years of on the job training with academic learning and, at the end of their studies, students earn a degree in adult nursing as well as their nurse registration.

Recognised as the highest ranking NHS

employer of apprentices in 2017/18, LTHT has employed over 2,000 apprentices since 2010 and over 1,000 of those individuals still work at the Trust.

Children’s Heart Surgery Fund present £1.9million cheque for new heart theatre Children’s Heart Surgery Fund (CHSF) have presented a cheque for £1.9 million towards vital equipment for the new children’s cardiac hybrid theatre at Leeds Children’s Hospital.

which launched in May 2016. With unprecedented help from CHSF supporters across the region, the campaign’s target was reached in May 2018.

The handover was made to LTHT within the new facility in December 2018, with the facility itself due to open for the first patient in March 2019.

This revolutionary facility will be used to treat babies and children with congenital heart disease (CHD) by delivering both open heart surgery, and heart procedures by cardiac catheter (keyhole surgery).

Julian Hartley, Chief Executive of LTHT, said: “This heart theatre will enable our fantastic clinicians to be able to treat children with state-of-the-art facilities. It will realise our vision for making Leeds an absolute world-class centre of excellence.”

New appointments to LTHT Executive team and Trust Board The Trust is pleased to welcome new appointments to the Executive team and to the Board of Non-Executive Directors.

Jenny Lewis joined the Executive team as Director of Human Resources and Organisational Development in August 2018. Jenny previously worked at Hampshire Public Services where she was Director of HR. Jenny also brings with her a wealth of experience in the NHS working in Gloucestershire NHS Foundation Trust.

Suzanne Clark joined the Trust Board in October 2018 as Non-Executive Director and will sit on the Trust’s Audit Committee. Suzanne is Director of

Internal Audit at Yorkshire Building Society and has held a variety of roles in banking throughout her career. Suzanne also has over twelve years’ experience operating at board level in complex and challenging regulated organisations.

Tom Keeney and Gillian Taylor joined the Trust Board as two new Associate Non-Executive Directors in December 2018. Tom will sit on the Trust’s Finance & Performance Committee and Research & Education Committee. He has worked in a number of roles in HR and business transformation throughout his career, helping to build high performing teams in a variety of sectors. Most recently he

held the position of HR Transformation and Effectiveness Director at BT. Gillian will sit on the Trust’s Finance & Performance Committee. She is a qualified accountant and has held a variety of roles in business transformation throughout her career.

She also has experience operating at Board level in the utility, social housing, and social business sectors including British Gas and Centrica.

In addition, Mark Chamberlain, current Deputy Chair and Non-Executive Director has also had his position on the Trust Board extended.

LTHT receives funding for state-of-the-art pathology building The Trust has been awarded £27 million for a new pathology building at St James’s.

The funding will allow LTHT to bring pathology services together into a high quality consolidated new facility, providing significant opportunities to improve staffing and skill sharing as well as equipment efficiencies.

said: “I am delighted that the partnership has received this funding to improve hospital facilities in West Yorkshire. Here at Leeds this investment will allow us to bring together pathology services into a high quality consolidated new facility benefitting the city and the whole region.”

He added: “Our Pathology team at LTHT is already doing world-class work, and this new state-of-the-art building will allow us to work with our partners to continue developing

the services we provide for patients in Leeds and beyond.”

The funding is part of the £963million of capital funding, announced by Matt Hancock, Health and Social Care Secretary in December 2018 to boost health facilities across England.

It is being allocated to a number of Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships and Integrated Care Systems across England as part of a major investment in the long-term future of the NHS.

Trust recognised at annual HSJ Awards LTHT recognised as ‘Veteran Aware’ ahead of Armistice Centenary The Trust was accredited as ‘Veteran Aware’ shortly before the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War in November 2018.

This accreditation means that patients who have served in the UK armed forces will be cared for by frontline staff who have received training and education on their specific needs, such as around mental health, and who can signpost them to local support services.

LTHT is one of 24 NHS bodies across the UK that has received accreditation from the Veterans Covenant Hospital Alliance. The Alliance is made up of national bodies, including NHS Improvement, NHS England, the Department of Health and Social Care, the Ministry of Defence, and the Confederation of Service Charities.

Julian Hartley, Chief Executive at LTHT said: “I am incredibly proud that the Trust has achieved such an accreditation, which is testament to the dedication and hard work of colleagues across the organisation.

As a Trust we are passionate about ensuring that both staff and patients who have served in the Armed Forces, or are serving at the moment, are given the support and care that they need and this latest achievement really does demonstrate our commitment to this.”

On 21 November, the awards ceremony for the HSJ Awards 2018 was held at the Intercontinental London, The O2, where LTHT was announced as winner of the Staff Engagement category in recognition for LTHT People.

The successful entry followed the implementation of The Leeds Way created in 2014 in partnership with the Trust’s workforce.

“Evidence shows that increased staff morale leads to better patient care - so it’s fantastic to have won this award which means so much to people across the organisation.”

Since then The Leeds Way has become embedded within the organisation. A formal staff engagement group was created and chaired by Chief Executive, Julian Hartley, which has led to a number of positive changes including five key focuses - health and wellbeing, recognition and celebration, effective two way communication, organisational learning and

leadership and employee journey.

Staff Engagement wasn’t the only success story of the night for LTHT with the Informatics team also being shortlisted for two awards.

The team were shortlisted in the Enhancing Care by Sharing Data and Information category for their ‘Who Shares Wins’ work, and in the Using Technology to Improve Efficiency category for their ‘On top form’ work, carried out in partnership with Aire Logic.

Carers Leeds were also shortlisted for the System Led Support for carers award following support for carers of older people in the Trust.

Heart Valves, Clots and Pregnancy symposium Caring for women with mechanical heart valves (MHV) in pregnancy is a challenge for clinicians due to the high risk of valve clots, and involves optimising the woman’s anticoagulation while ensuring fetal safety.

New book celebrates the history of the clinical specialties at Leeds Teaching Hospitals from 1767-2018 A book detailing a fascinating insight into the history of the clinical specialties at Leeds Teaching Hospitals has been published.

Capturing the inspiring medical and surgical developments that have taken place in Leeds over the past 250 years, the book has been written by clinicians past and present.

It tells the story of the development of some of the clinical specialties including medicine and surgery, and techniques ranging from aseptic surgery to the first liver transplant in Leeds.

The book also celebrates how healthcare in Leeds has grown; from 1767 when an annual subscription of two guineas enabled 371 patients to be treated at the General Infirmary at Leeds, through to 2017/18 when Leeds Teaching Hospitals treated 1,611,287 patients.

With over sixty contributors, and a combination of research and memories, this unique collection is being released in the year when the NHS celebrated its 70th birthday to mark this historical milestone.

David Berridge, Deputy Chief Medical Officer was one of the founders of the

project. He said: “It is easy to forget the important history that underpins the current modern services that we provide, and this book has been written as a way to capture this before it is forgotten.

“I would encourage everyone to pick up a copy for a fascinating insight into the history of healthcare in Leeds.”

The printing of the book was generously funded by the Trust’s charity partner, Leeds Cares, as a valuable historic and educational resource. The Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society (launched by the men who founded the LGI) also provided the Trust with a grant towards the design of the book.

These complex patients have been managed in Leeds for several years through a robust multidisciplinary pathway involving obstetrics, haematology, cardiology and anaesthesia. As a regional referral centre, patients in Leeds are seen pre-conceptually and regularly in the antenatal period.

Dr Etienne Ciantar, Consultant Obstetrician, brought together local experts in the field to talk about the latest evidence and share their experiences. ‘Heart Valves, Clots and Pregnancy’ was kindly sponsored by LEO Pharma and the evening brought together over 100 delegates from across the UK, including consultant anaesthetists, haematologists, cardiologists, obstetricians, trainee doctors, nurses and midwives.

There were a wide range of speakers at the symposium who all shared learning and created a very interesting discussion. One of the highlights of the evening was a short video of a MHV patient who talked about her experience. This gave a very strong message to the audience and highlighted the high risk nature of these patients.

Rheumatology patient education event success The Rheumatology department at Chapel Allerton Hospital have introduced a series of patient education events for patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA).

Following an audit of their RA clinics, 65% of newly diagnosed patients were interested in finding out more about their condition and how they could help themselves with self-management of their symptoms.

The team initiated a “Meet the Team Event” twice yearly to introduce RA patients to individuals within the healthcare team and showcase the work done in the Early Arthritis and Treat to Target clinics which they attend. The first event was well received by the patients who attended.

They are also holding a “Flare Workshop” twice yearly at the start of the winter and summer seasons, to explain how patients can manage a flare of their disease and what to do if their symptoms don’t settle.

The team had over 150 calls to their Rheumatology Adviceline last year, from patients who were flaring and seeking advice. These workshops aim to enable patients to self-manage their flares reducing the need to call the Adviceline, thereby facilitating more efficient use of the CNS team.

At the end of each session, the patients can develop their own flare toolkit using the practical advice and self-management techniques they have been shown.

Thumbs up for GR8X! Junior doctors at Leeds Children’s Hospital have developed a new way of logging and sharing positive outcomes, which is being piloted in the CAT Unit and Neonatal Unit at the hospital in January.

GR8X (aka Greatix!) serves as a recognition scheme as well as a repository of good practice and examples of ‘when things go right’. It is part of a wider piece of work at the Children’s Hospital aimed at learning from excellence and best practice.

Alix Fonfe, co-chair of the Junior Doctor Forum at Leeds Children’s Hopsital and the first Paediatric Chief Registrar in the country, said: “It has been fantastic working to implement the GR8X that recognises the brilliant work staff at Leeds Children’s Hospital do every day.

Nearly 30 people have been involved in some way to introduce the GR8X and their enthusiasm has been what has made the introduction of this project

so successful.”

Dr Lawrence Miall, Consultant Neonatologist and Quality Lead for Leeds Children’s Hospital said: “GR8X is a fantastic example of innovation and leadership from the Junior Doctor Forum at Leeds Children’s Hospital. Some other centres have established a ‘learning from excellence’ culture, focussing on what went well rather than just on errors.

“For some time we talked about bringing this reporting system to Leeds but Alix and her team have independently got on and driven it through, finding innovative IT solutions and motivating everyone to get involved. We plan to use the output from the GR8X’s not just to reward and empower staff to continue the great work they do for children and young people but to improve our governance processes and learning lessons process.”

Plans for new ‘Hospitals of the Future’ at Leeds General Infirmary unveiled Exciting proposals for a brand-new hospital development to transform Leeds General Infirmary were revealed in October 2018.

Plans for two state-of-the-art hospital buildings, including a dedicated Children’s Hospital on the Leeds General Infirmary site were submitted to Leeds City Council for discussion at a pre-planning application presentation.

The plans are part of an ambitious, longterm vision for the LGI called Hospitals of the Future, which aims to revolutionise health services for patients in Leeds and the wider region.

The first hospital building, joined to the LGI’s Jubilee Wing, will extend health services for adults. Among its facilities will be a new theatre suite dedicated to day case procedures, endoscopy and radiology services and a central Outpatients department supported by key services like pharmacy. It will also have more critical care capacity, allowing the LGI to expand its highly specialist services and to develop further specialist healthcare in the future.

The second hospital building will be a fantastic new home for Leeds Children’s Hospital. For the first time in Leeds, this will bring together staff and services from the current Children’s Hospital based largely at the LGI’s Clarendon and

Celebrating Diwali with living kidney donors Martin wings to deliver health services in purpose-built facilities dedicated solely for children and young people.

Julian Hartley, Chief Executive of the Trust, said: “This is a really exciting development for our hospitals that will be a huge step forward in the way we provide healthcare for patients in Leeds and the wider region.

“By designing hospital buildings from the ground up, we’ll be able to embrace new technologies and innovation to deliver modern, efficient health services that are tailored to our patients’ needs, not just now but in the future.”

Public engagement events were held in November to allow members of the public the chance to view and comment on the proposals. Hilary Benn MP was amongst those welcomed to see the plans at one of the drop-in days held at the Carriageworks in Leeds.

An event funded by National BAME Transplant Alliance/ NHS Blood & Transplant was held in December as part of the Living Transplant Initiative to improve the awareness of living kidney donation in BAME communities.

Despite longer waiting times and the associated higher morbidity and mortality whilst waiting for a kidney on deceased kidney offers, the number of Living Kidney Transplants is low in South Asian communities, making up just 20% of all kidney transplants.

This event was a partnership project between South Asian Health Action (SAHA) charity, LTHT, University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust and University of Warwick. The event offered attendees a chance to hear real life stories of living kidney donors from the community, with four donors sharing their stories to an audience of over 250 adults and children. A question and answer session with an expert panel was also well received by the audience.

As a result of this event, fourteen people expressed an intention to seek further information about living kidney donation and nine expressed an interest to donate a kidney for someone in need.

The event organisers hope to put on more events to increase awareness in BAME communities across Yorkshire.

Helen Syme Currently my day-to-day is pretty varied. I might be working in the office, going to meetings in the Trust or in Leeds with bereavement support organisations, or (shortly!) delivering education sessions on bereavement and grief. As the role develops further, I’m sure my days will get even more varied!

What else have you done in your career so far?

Before coming to the Trust I worked on the inpatient unit at Wheatfields Hospice in Headingley. I started there as a newly qualified nurse, having trained at the University of Leeds.

I have also worked as a volunteer live-in carer, as a youth hostel assistant at Ingleton Youth Hostel in North Yorkshire and have a degree in Anthropology and Sociology.

What’s the best thing about your job?

Helen Syme is a Bereavement Nurse who spends half her week with the Patient Experience Team and the other half with the Palliative Care Team. She has worked at the Trust since October 2017.

Summarise the main aspects of your role?

The Bereavement Nurse role is new to the Trust, so since I started I have been finding out how we support bereaved people at the moment in different areas.

I really love how keen everyone is to learn about bereavement and how we can improve things for bereaved families.

What is the one thing you would change at LTHT to help you do your job better?

Having an insiders’ guide to all the shortcuts, ways of getting around the hospital and where everything is!

What’s your best advice to a new starter at the Trust?

Find the person who knows everything (where things are, who to email about what, what to do when…) and make friends!

There are some great initiatives out there already and lots of people going out of their way to support bereaved people. My job is about improving how we support all bereaved people across the whole Trust.

Record number of kidney transplants performed at LTHT A record number of 215 kidney transplants were carried out at LTHT during 2018, another milestone for one of the largest solid organ transplant centre in the UK. Leeds also offers live kidney transplants where the recipient receives a kidney from a family member or other match. A total of 62 live kidney transplants took place in 2018.

LTHT makes history with first double hand transplant in female patient (and three transplants in one week) Surgeons at the Trust made history in September by performing the UK’s first double hand transplant in a female patient.

Patient Tania Jackson received a double transplant and - in another UK first patient John-Paul McGrail also received a transplant. This was the first time two patients have undergone this kind of surgery at the unit within a week of one another. Two of the transplants were at a level above the elbow whilst the third was at the wrist level.

LTHT is the only hospital in the UK offering hand transplantation and has now completed the complex surgeries on five patients since the first patient in 2012.

Professor Simon Kay, who heads the team, paid particular tribute to the large and very professional team required for these operations and to

the families who gift their loved one’s organs that others might benefit.

He said: “These latest transplants establish the service as mature and the surgery as becoming routine. They demonstrate the great versatility of the transplantation technique which restores important human attributes and functions to those who have lost their upper limbs.”

Chief Executive of LTHT Julian Hartley said: “We are delighted that both patients have made such a fantastic start to their recovery and we wish them the very best for their recovery.

The work of our hand transplant team is truly groundbreaking and has transformed the lives of patients; helping them regain their independence and take on the everyday tasks that many of us take for granted.”

QIST study collaboration to reduce infections during surgery elective joint replacement completes a course of decolonisation to ensure that they do not carry any bugs when undergoing their surgery.

LTHT joined forces with 30 organisations across the NHS in November 2018 to reduce infections from MSSA for patients having hip and knee replacement surgery.

This unique collaborative, called QIST (Quality Improvement for Surgical Teams) Infection, is driving forward improvements for patients by ‘scaling up’ interventions such as screening and the use of body wash and nasal gel treatments for patients carrying the bug, to reduce infections and save lives.

MSSA is a common cause of infection in joint replacement surgery. Research has shown that interventions - such as decolonisation using nasal gel and body washes - can reduce the risk of infection from MSSA by 60% in some cases.

by Professor Hemant Pandit.

Around 1200 joint replacements are carried out at Chapel Allerton Hospital annually. All patients are assessed for infections before surgery and receive follow-up appointments at regular intervals.

These results are one of the best in the whole country and something everyone in the organisation should be proud of.”

He commented: “Colleagues from pre-operative assessment, outcome assessment, ward and theatre staff, coding and IT support teams have been instrumental in ensuring this study is delivered to the highest standards and our data is exemplary.”

A fond farewell to our long-serving staff Avril Reed

Carol Holmes

Avril has worked for the Trust for almost 31 years, after starting work at St James’s in the Theatre TSU unit in David Beevers in 1987. She then moved into Theatres working as a Health Care in Opthalthalmic Theatres for 2 years. Avril then went on to do her ODP Training and qualified in 1999, going on to train countless learners and new starters.

Working in the Paediatric/Urology Team, Avril then went on to help develop the first Robotic Surgical team at St James’s in 2005. In 2014 Avril Became Deputy Team Leader for Urology. She will be missed by all her friends and colleagues.

Carol completed her nurse training in Leeds back in 1982 to become a State Enrolled Nurse. She then began working on the medical and surgical ward at LGI where she stayed for 3 years. After working elsewhere for a while, she returned to LGI in 1996, where she has worked in Theatre Recovery ever since.”

Barbara Martinez Barbara retired from her role at the end of December 2018, as Senior Sister of the Outpatient Department at Wharfedale Hospital, after 54 years of working as a nurse. She commenced her career as a student nurse at the General Infirmary in Leeds in 1964. After a short period of working for other health authorities Barbara returned to Leeds and has worked for the Trust and its predecessor since 1979. She has worked at Wharfedale Hospital for the last 31 years. Friends and colleagues gathered at a special presentation to mark her retirement and wish her well. Chief Nurse, Suzanne Hinchliffe, and Head of Nursing, Zoe Kirk presented Barbara with a bouquet of flowers and an engraved crystal glass vase in appreciation of her many years of dedication and commitment to her role.

Carol is a compassionate, extremely well loved member of the team. She is well known for her baking to raise money for charity and the dedication she has given the department over the years. It was not a difficult decision for her to return to work part-time, back to the job she describes as ‘the best job I have ever had’.

All the members of the theatre team wish her a very happy much-deserved partial retirement after so many years of dedicated service to the NHS.

Janis Zagajewski

Dr Peter Goulding On 11 September 2018 the Neurology Department arranged a special symposium at Leeds Town Hall to celebrate the Leeds Epilepsy service and in particular the last day for Dr Peter Goulding who has led the service in Leeds for 24 years.

Peter helped to introduce, amongst other innovations, the epilepsy nursing service and the epilepsy surgery program. His significant contributions to the NHS, junior training and to the field of Neurology is well recognised. His colleagues wish him all the best in his retirement.

Janis started work at St James’s Hospital in 1998 and worked at the David Beevers day unit until 2008 when she went to work for the Pre Assessment department. In 2015 she joined the team at Gynaecology Outpatients and she has been there ever since. Her colleagues describe her as caring and hardworking, and a truly fabulous nurse. Janis has two beautiful daughters and a grandson who she adores and they are sure to keep her very busy in her retirement.

Susan Broadbent

After working in Leeds for 39 years Denise retired from her role in November 2018. Denise joined the hospital as a newly qualified OT but for many years has been the Head of OT, for which she has been widely known and respected.

After 37 years working in the NHS Susan Broadbent retired from her post as Senior Payroll Officer in October 2018.

Sue started her NHS career in the Payroll team at the West Yorkshire Ambulance Service and subsequently joined the Payroll Team in Leeds in June 2000 where she has continued to work ever since.

Friends and colleagues gathered to bid Sue farewell and to wish her a very happy and much-deserved retirement.

Sue is pictured with the Payroll Team together with her family, whom she is looking forward to spending more time with in the future.

Denise has been an inspiration and role model for the OTs within the trust, all of who will have progressed in their career under Denise’s mentorship. Her support and commitment to mentoring staff from the BME community in the Trust should also not be understated. She was nationally recognised earlier this year when she was shortlisted for an NHS70 Windrush AHP award - a great accolade and well deserved.

Denise’s colleagues and peers thank her for all her support and friendship over the years, and for her significant contribution she has made to the OT profession in Leeds. Denise’s professionalism, ‘can do’ attitude, and caring personality was widely respected and she will be greatly missed.

Dianne Allen Di began her nurse training in 1974 at LGI where she has worked ever since.

Di has worked in Intensive Care for 35 years, and for the last 15 years has also run the follow-up clinics for those people who have been patients on ICU. She is a well-respected member of staff, hard working and with a fine sense of humour. She has always provided tremendous care for her patients, often in very difficult circumstances.

Di retired and returned part-time three years but is now ready to enjoy retirement to the full.

Suzanne Hinchliffe Many colleagues from across the Trust gathered together to say farewell and good luck to Suzanne Hinchliffe, Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Executive, when she retired in December 2018.

Suzanne started at the Trust in 2013, before which she was Chief Nurse and Deputy Chief Executive at University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust. Over the past five years Suzanne has been instrumental in transforming the LTHT into a ‘Good’ rated trust, which places patients firmly at the centre the Trust’s work.

Suzanne’s many qualities include outstanding leadership and lending professional support to staff, particularly nurses, midwives and AHPs. Among her achievements during her time at LTHT include developing Caring the Leeds Way, launching the patient experience strategy, and leading improvements in ward professional standards and nursing recruitment.

Suzanne’s calm stoicism, her compassionate nature, and brilliant sense of humour will be greatly missed.

Her colleagues and all who know her wish her the very best in her retirement.

Val Wells Val Wells has retired from her role as Senior Sister of Ward 1 after 33 years of service at Wharfedale Hospital. Val started work as a nursing auxiliary at the formerly named Wharfedale General Hospital in 1985. She went on to complete her nurse training and qualified as a nurse in 1987. However, Val’s invaluable knowledge and experience of working on a surgical ward will not be wasted as she is welcomed back to the ward in January 2019 as a staff nurse.

Jackie Dickinson Jackie retired on 30 November 2018.

She joined the Trust in 1994, working as a ward assistant, but has worked as a Physiotherapy Assistant for the past 20 years. For those who know her, both patients and staff, she epitomises all that the Leeds Way stands for. She is reliable, hard-working and always goes that extra 5 miles for her patients. In recent years, Jackie has worked as a pivotal member of the J30 team and leaves an impossible hole to fill.

The Elderly Physiotherapy team, and all who have been fortunate to work with Jackie over the years, will miss her terribly. She has proven to be a valuable team member and contributed to the Elderly Physiotherapy Team winning a ‘Team of the Year’ award in 2016. Her colleagues wish her all of the very best in her exciting relocation to Spain.

Sponsored Silence for the Hand Unit Thank you to 14-year-old Loyza who took part in a sponsored silence and raised £100 for the Hand Unit.

Loyza’s father is a patient of Miss Bourke and donated the money to thank the team for everything they have done for her father.

£10,000 donation for Haematology wards Thank you to Jackie Gill, a leukaemia patient at Leeds Cancer Centre who has raised £10,000 for the Friends of the Leeds Centre for Leukaemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma through a series of fundraising events.

One of Jackie’s friends arranged a fundraising night in conjunction with NE harness racing, while another ran five marathons to contribute to the significant total.

The charity provides support to all patients on the haematology unit and enhances patient care by funding extra equipment on the ambulatory care and outpatient day units, wards J88 and J89, and the haematological malignancy diagnostic unit.

Helen’s friend Leah recently got married and instead of favours for the guests, the bride and groom made a donation and the guests followed on.

Helen had her second liver transplant recently and is backing the team’s fundraising campaign ‘Making Every Liver Count’ which will fund a new perfusion machine.

‘The Cabin’ opens on J83 Professor Toogood, Richard Maltby, Professor Sebag-Montefiore and Coleen Maltby

Richard Maltby Thank you once again to Richard Maltby and his family and friends, who organised another annual golf charity event at Wetherby Golf Club along with further fundraising. This raised £6,000 for research work led by Professor Giles Toogood and Professor David SebagMontefiore.

In total, Richard has raised over £127,000 in the last 16 years, after his experience of bowel and liver cancer motivated him to fundraise for research. He has been clear of the disease for 14 years and this charity fundraising has been of key importance in helping to develop new treatment approaches using radiotherapy for bowel cancer. This work leads to clinical studies offering patients access to new approaches for treatment, helping to improve cancer cure rates and reduce the side effects of treatment.

Patients at the Leeds Liver Unit officially opened ‘The Cabin’, a dedicated room for young adults on J83.

It has been generously funded by the Lyth family, who have been fundraising since their daughter Naomi, who was a liver patient, sadly passed away. Their fundraising has supported patients to attend events like the transplant games but they also wanted to use some of it for a long-term improvement to the ward.

The Cabin has a woodland theme based on ideas from young patients and the windows are decorated with a frosting that gives the illusion of natural light shining through trees. The furniture is suitable for patients with varying mobility, complete with built-in chargers for phones and devices.

Staff Lottery – what’s on your wishlist?

Did you know that, as an LTHT staff member, you could be in with a chance to win up to £1000 every month? Did you know you can apply for funding to improve staff amenities in your workplace?

I was rugby captain of the Women’s Rugby club at Guy’s King’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals, (the Oldest Club in the World). In the year I was captain, we lost every single match but won every single ‘boat race’ at the bar afterwards but unfortunately we were still relegated.

What is your favourite food?

Alix Fonfe, Paediatric Registrar, Chief Registrar of Leeds Children’s Hospital, has worked at the Trust for 5 years

Pizza. It’s the perfect meal at any time of the day or night and you can have it with a Nutella topping for pudding!

What did you want to be when you were growing up?

A wildlife photographer or a vet.

Leeds is on the map as 100,000th genome is sequenced The 100,000th genome has been sequenced as part of the 100,000 Genomes Project.

This milestone marks an incredible achievement that has been contributed to by the team at the Trust and in just four years colleagues have worked together across the region to sequence an unprecedented number of whole human genomes.

In total the Yorkshire & Humber Genomic Medicine Centre recruited 6,020 patients which is a fantastic contribution to this significant milestone.

Once sequenced, information about a whole genome, or the full blueprint of a person’s DNA, could lead to faster diagnosis and more personalised treatments for those living with cancers and rare inherited diseases.

The data received from these patients is now being analysed in labs in Leeds and Sheffield to create reports that will start the transformation of the genomic medicine infrastructure to benefit patients across the country.

A key element of this achievement has been through engaging with patients in Leeds and the local community.

The genomics team at the Trust raised awareness of their work through an innovative play and workshop called ‘Jeans, whose Genes?’.

Its aim was to raise awareness of the impact of genetic disease that often runs unaware within families by mixing humour, personal story, and science.

The play engaged with the large and diverse BAME population of Yorkshire and the Humber as part of a collaborative project between the Yorkshire & Humber Genomic Medicine Centre and Space2, a local arts organisation based in Leeds.
