New Director of Nursing appointed at DBTH David Purdue has been appointed as the new Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), following a six-year tenure as the organisation’s Chief Operating Officer.

An integral role at the Trust, the Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals provides clear leadership to clinical staff, overseeing the development and delivery of outstanding patient care, while driving the organisation’s strategies for ‘Quality’, ‘Patient Experience’, ‘Research and Development’ and ‘Infection Prevention and Control’.

Speaking about the appointment, David said: “I am delighted to be taking on this next challenge, as well as the next step in my journey at DBTH. “The Trust has recently refreshed its vision to be the ‘safest Trust in England, outstanding in all that we do’ and I believe that our nurses,

midwives and allied health professional colleagues are absolutely integral to this ambition. I can’t wait to get started.”

With almost 30 years of experience within the NHS, David qualified from the Nottingham School of Nursing as a Registered Nurse in 1990, working initially within cardiology at Queen’s Medical Centre before specialising in coronary care at City Hospital. Following a second spell at Queen’s, the local resident set up a number of cardiac nurse-led services before going on to work at the NHS Modernisation Agency.

A passionate patient advocate, David is returning to clinical practice and will oversee the Trust’s approach to safety and quality, while supporting the organisation’s over 2,000 nurses, midwives and allied health professionals.

After returning to a patient-facing position in 2004, leading the specialities of Cardiothoracics and Emergency Medicine, David joined what was then Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in October 2008 as Divisional Nurse Manager for Medicine, before rising to the position of Chief Operating Officer in July 2013.

David is one of our most prominent and effective leaders, and we have benefited from his insights and expertise for a number of years. Patient Safety Team win prestigious award A team of healthcare professionals at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) has been awarded the Shared Learning Award for their outstanding contributions to improving patient safety.

The Trust ‘Sharing How We Care’ work was selected as the winners of the Shared Learning Award by a panel at the Patient Safety Learning Awards in London, 2019.

The award recognises the work involved in setting up an annual conference as a forum to share examples of exemplary healthcare practice and a monthly newsletter which focuses on aspects of patient’s safety, including patient experience and articles about improvements in clinical areas.

The newsletter is sent to all staff at the Trust on a monthly basis and has been met with resoundingly positive feedback. In particular, it has been instrumental in changing the way staff at the Trust think about patient safety.

Information and data, which had previously been shared with various committees at the Trust but never seen by the majority of staff on the frontline, is now easily accessible and is shared in an open and transparent way.

As a result of the work through Sharing How We Care, the Trust has seen a 40% decrease in the number of serious incidents reported.

Cindy Storer, Acting Deputy Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, said: “We’re so pleased that the work through Sharing How We Care at the Trust has been recognised. We’ve seen real improvements in the

quality of the care we provide as a direct result of this shared learning. These results reflect the commitment from all of our staff to support Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals to become the safest Trust in England.”

The Trust has implemented several changes to care over the last 12 months, based on feedback received from patients, visitors and staff. The hospitals recently introduced extended visiting hours to make their patients feel more at home and to support relatives and carers to be involved in the care of their loved ones.

Other initiatives have also been implemented to make sure patients get a good night’s sleep to aid their recovery and that they have protected mealtimes where non-urgent clinical activity stops. During these mealtimes, patients are encouraged to eat out of bed, speeding up their recovery and getting them back to a normal routine.

All of these changes have been brought together in new, helpful bedside information folder for every adult inpatient and new welcome boards outside each ward now help to provide information for family, friends and carers, to ensure continued advice and support for patients after discharge.

The Trust also implemented ‘traffic light hats’ for new-born babies. A novel patient safety initiative, the hats were knitted and donated by the community in red, amber and green colour to signify the temperature needs of babies. Those born in theatres where it is colder tend to have lower body temperatures and the hats are a clear and quick indicator for staff which new-borns

need closer monitoring to ensure their safety.

The appeal for knitted hats received a phenomenal response from all over the world and eventually featured on The One Show in summer. The appearance on the show helped the Trust to launch a new appeal for knitted twiddlemuffs, which help to distract patients with dementia or delirium whilst having clinical treatment.

Care Quality Commission (CQC) inspection Following the conclusion of the ‘Well Led Inspection’ which took place 8 to 10 October, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and Use of Resources inspections of the Trust have now been concluded.

We are expecting to receive a draft report towards the end of November with the final report published in January. During the unannounced inspection (3 to 6 September) our visitors described colleagues as open, engaging and passionate about their work. Complementing this further, in the recent ‘Well-Led’ portion of the exercise; inspectors told us that we are a welcoming and people-focused organisation.

We are on a journey to become the safest Trust in England, outstanding in all that we do, and we believe we are making good progress towards this destination.

Cancer care ranked as best in region Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) have surpassed expectations in a recent survey designed to evaluate cancer care in the UK.

outcome represents a significant step forward for DBTH, having previously been placed towards the lower end of the spectrum, with some questions improving by as much as 15%.

The National Cancer Patient Experience survey takes place every year and is used to collect feedback from those undergoing cancer treatment. With 52 questions covering a broad range of topics – like finding out if patients were involved in decision making or if they felt respected during their hospital stay – the review monitors the progress of healthcare organisations and identifies any room for improvement.

In terms of specific answers, the survey found that 85% of DBTH cancer patients found it to be ‘’quite easy’’ or ‘‘very easy’’ to contact their Clinical Nurse Specialist. Meanwhile, 96% of local respondents said that hospital staff told them who to contact if they were worried about their condition and 87% expressed that they were always treated with dignity and respect.

This positive change in results can be attributed to various factors, with the healthcare provider refining its approach to cancer education, considering feedback from other surveys and testimonials and bolstering their workforce with extra urology staff. In addition to this, the Trust has also put together a weekly support group that offers counselling to cancer patients, explaining the potential side-effects of treatment and what to expect.

The fieldwork for the latest survey was carried out between October 2018 and April 2019 and assessed the views of 123,512 respondents. Based on this, a general report was published that summarised the national picture and this was then followed by individual, organisation-specific versions.

DBTH has performed exceptionally well this year, scoring above the national average at 8.9 out of 10. As such, the Trust now ranks as the best in the locality, over Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield, Chesterfield and Mid Yorks. This

Published this September, the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey 2018 is the eight iteration of the survey, having ran annually since 2010.

A new way to care for mums-to-be A team of midwifery colleagues at DBTH, is introducing a new model of care to ensure women receive the best possible experience throughout their maternity care.

In line with national plans from NHS England, the Trust has created a small group of midwives who will be responsible for the care of each woman throughout her pregnancy journey from antenatal to post-partum care.

By having a named midwife who is part of a small team, mums-to-be are expected to have a better birth experience and improved clinical and mental health outcomes for them, their new-born and their families. It allows women and families to have a close relationship with their midwife, based on mutual trust and focussed on the mum’s decisions about her care.

This comes after a national maternity review by NHS England revealed that women who had given birth thought that they saw too many midwives and doctors over the course of their pregnancy and they did not always know who they were and what their roles were.

The team, known as the Welbeck Midwives, will be in post from 2 December and will be supported by an obstetrician who can offer advice where appropriate. Each named midwife for mums-to-be will liaise closely with obstetric, neonatal and other services to make sure that she is getting the right care and that it is joined up with the care she is receiving in the community.

experiences which is what we’re striving for here at DBTH.” A second team is already being developed to provide specialist care for mums-to-be who have pre-existing diabetes and a third team who will provide maternity care for vulnerable women will be up and running in the new year.

The Trust is planning to create more of these community teams in the future and by 2021 most women in Doncaster and Bassetlaw will be cared for in this way during their pregnancies.

Story-telling teddies help children in A&E The Emergency Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary has been enlisting children visiting the hospital to take care of an ‘A&E bear.’

The bears are given to children who attend the Emergency Department as a way of distracting them from clinical treatment and rewarding their bravery on their visit to the hospital. Each bear comes with a certificate, on which children officially name their new soft toy and tell the story of their visit to A&E in their own words.

Hospital services moving away from Chequer Road Clinic In order to provide services in the most suitable environments, Mammography, Audiology and Children’s Speech and Language Therapy services provided

by DBTH will be moving away from the Chequer Road Clinic in the coming months.

Throughout the past number of years, the Trust’s town centre premises have increasingly become unfit for purpose, an issue which is particularly difficult for Audiology services.

A service which investigates conditions relating to hearing, with the current clinic’s flat roof and out-of-date design, carrying out tests is challenging particularly during certain weather conditions, meaning that patients sometimes have to wait for a break in the clouds before getting the treatment they need.

Seeking to resolve this issue, the Trust will be moving the three services currently based at Chequer Road to the following locations: • Audiology will move less than two miles away to The Sandringham Practice (Sandringham Road, Intake, Doncaster, and South Yorkshire, DN2 5JH) • Mammography and Children’s Speech and Language Therapy will move less than a third of a mile to Devonshire House (Cavendish Court, S Parade, Doncaster DN1 2DJ).

The new locations are in buildings which are fit-for-purpose for the services which will be provided, with refurbishments to take place to ensure a smooth continuation of care for patients. This includes the building of stateof-the-art sound rooms for Audiology, as well as the purchase of all new Mammography equipment in order to speed up and enhance screening for service-users.

Rebecca Joyce, Chief Operating Officer at DBTH, said: “As a Trust we have been planning this change for a number of months and we are committed to getting it right for our Doncaster residents.

“For a number of years we have faced challenges with our Chequer Road Clinic site and we believe that this move will ensure patients receive a top-notch service within a much more comfortable setting.”

When services have a final date for relocation, existing patients will be notified with at least six weeks’ notice of the change of venue. Both new clinics will offer on-site car parking, as well as being accessible via regular bus routes.

The Trust will update further once a confirmed timeline of dates is in place for the move and current patients are advised to attend their appointments at the Chequer Road Clinic as normal.

“When I saw the bears I thought what a great idea they were and that it would be the perfect way for our young Emergency Department attendees to tell us what they thought about their visit.”

Angela Guy, a Healthcare Assistant at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, came up with this idea whilst on a threemonth secondment in the Emergency Department. Angela said: “When I saw the bears I thought what a great idea they were and that it would be the perfect way for our young Emergency Department attendees to tell us what they thought about their visit.

“Feedback is notoriously difficult to gather from young patient groups but this allows them to tell us all about their care in their own words. It also gives them something to share with their friends and make the hospital seem like less of a daunting place for young children in the area.”

Since the introduction of the teddies, the paediatric team have found them to be a great distraction and children in the Emergency Room are much more relaxed and less anxious about being in an unfamiliar environment.

Doncaster Went Valley Lions, who donate the bears to the hospital, are a small group of volunteers who support Doncaster communities. The club was established over 60 years ago and gives help and welfare to those in need.

All of the stories are collected by the team in the Emergency Department and the team are planning to install a post box in the department for children to submit their own stories.

The Antenatal Clinic used staff suggestions, observations in clinic and patient feedback to understand the current issues and improve their services. They trialled certain improvements such as not using notes within clinic as part of a PDSA and retrospectively looked at referrals in to see if the new referral criteria would improve flow within the department and enable women to see the right professional and the right time. The team have also improved their environment with a clinic makeover and comfort area.

Matty uses his free time to respond to issues raised out-of-hours on the staff Facebook page. IT matters are often a cause of frustration in large organisations and Matty has bravely put his face and name to the service and offered helpful, timely advice on a number of issues. One of these being IT security which is an anxiety for many. His advice has helped us all to feel a little safer online.

Sheffield man urges other men aged 65 and over to attend life-saving scan Accepting an invitation to attend Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) screening has proven to be a life-saving decision for one Sheffield resident.

Bassetlaw AAA Screening Programme Manager, said: “The screening programme aims to reduce this risk by providing men with a simple, painless ultrasound scan that will detect whether there is an AAA. The scan only takes a few minutes and saves lives.

An AAA is a swelling of the main blood vessel in the body, the aorta, which can weaken and expand and is most common in men aged 65 and above. There are usually no symptoms and if left untreated the aneurysm can rupture and cause internal bleeding often with fatal consequences. Screening involves a simple ultrasound scan which looks for weaknesses and enlargements of the aorta.

Paul Scholey, from Sheffield, received his invitation in the post in February, just before he turned 65. He hadn’t heard of ‘AAA’ before receiving his screening invitation appointment, but after reading the information leaflet which accompanied his letter he decided to attend, even though he felt fit and well. Paul chose to have screening at a local GP Practice and was shocked to be told at his appointment he had a large aneurysm and was urgently referred to Northern General Hospital.

These include giving up smoking, eating a healthy balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight and taking regular exercise. DBTH Nurse gives Breast Care Advice on BBC Radio Sheffield

As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a nurse from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) made a guest appearance on BBC Radio Sheffield, to share her knowledge and expertise with listeners across the region.

Speaking on ‘’Nowt So Strange as Folk’’ – a weekly broadcast centred around modern life in South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire – Christina Dyer, Macmillan Breast Care Nurse at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), imparted lots of useful information about the importance of breast screening. Across the 15 minute segment, she explained why women should be checking themselves for cancerous lumps, broke down the process of a mammography,

Over the course of the frank and open discussion, Christina clarified that the most important thing with breast cancer is to catch it early, as this will enable hospital treatments to be more effective.

To do this, women should check their breasts on a monthly basis for changes or irregularities and if they notice anything out of the ordinary, then they should make an appointment with their GP.

Speaking about this, Christina said: ‘’We often talk about the need to do monthly checks, but this is actually very rare, as women often say that they cannot find the time. However, one way of incorporating it into your routine is to examine yourself during a wash in the morning. All you need to do is rub your breasts in a circular movement, with a little bit of firmness, making sure that they are roughly symmetrical and watching out for any lumps or areas with thickened tissue. By doing this, you increase your chances of detecting cancer early and getting successful treatment’’.

After conducting the live check, Christina then took a moment to talk about mammograms and field some FAQs. For context, mammograms are essentially X-rays tests that can be used to spot cancers when they are too small to feel and cannot be perceived by the naked eye. They only take a few minutes and whilst it might feel uncomfortable, it should not be painful either. Given that the likelihood of getting breast cancer increases with age, all over 50 women are automatically invited for screening, provided they are registered with a GP. This will occur every three years, until their 71st Birthday. Of course, you can still arrange to have a screening once you pass this age, by contacting the DBTH Breast Unit on Tel: 01302 644966.

The evaluation, which took place earlier this year, found that the service was thorough, friendly and took the patient’s individual needs into account, achieving all national performance standards.

Speaking about the recent evaluation, Dr Shivani Dewan, Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at DBTH, said: ‘’We know that our screening programme is excellent and to have this recognised by an external assessor is a huge accomplishment. I am so proud of our team and would like to thank them for all their efforts, as we have managed to achieve 100% on all the standards that we have been measured against.’’

DESPs are vital when it comes to eye care, as they are used to check for a condition called diabetic retinopathy, one of the most common causes of blindness in the UK. This illness is brought on by high blood sugar levels and can do permanent damage if not detected early enough. Residents of Doncaster, Worksop and the Dearne Valley can rely on an exceptional diabetic eye service, which has been going strong for over 13 years. Everyone aged 12 and over with diabetes receives an invitation to screen once a year, with an appointment taking around 30 minutes. The DESP team have engaged with harder to reach areas, including the Travelling Community, prisons and people with mental health issues to

encourage them to attend for appointments, so that they can also receive high quality care.

During the recent quality assurance visit, which was conducted by members of the National Eye Screening Team, assessors spoke to both staff and visitors and considered evidence according to the national specification. Their findings were incredibly positive, recognising that colleagues were enthusiastic and always treated their patients as real people.

They also noted that the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Diabetes Eye Screening Programme is unique because it looks at diabetes as a whole, rather than focussing solely on eye screening. This more comprehensive examination means that there is a greater chance of identifying any problems, enabling clinicians to signpost patients to the right place for treatment. The assessor was very impressed by this in-depth service and praised the staff for their hard work and dedication.

3,000 colleagues vaccinated in two weeks!

In just 14 days, almost 3,000 doctors, nurses and other health professionals volunteered to get their flu jab at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH).

This ‘all hands on deck’ model, which has proven highly effective over the past three years, is seeing success once again with a ground-swell of support from the team, so much so that in just one week, the organisation has run out of vaccines and is currently waiting on an order for more.

I am confident that we’re on course for another successful flu vaccination campaign, which, importantly, will help us to reduce the impact of the flu virus both in our hospitals and in the communities we serve.”

Each year, in order to help promote the availability of the jab, the Trust takes on cinematic inspiration, with this year’s flu vaccination campaign nodding towards HannaBarbera’s ‘Scooby Doo’. Dubbed ‘Scooby Flu’, a handful of vaccinators have donned wigs and costumes, recreating the iconic cartoon’s 60s inspired cast in a number of posters, social media graphics and a music video.

The hospital’s flu campaign is currently being led by a dedicated team of vaccinators from across a variety of specialities and services within the Trust, with support from the Trust’s Chief Executive, Richard Parker OBE, and Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals, David Purdue.

Throughout winter, the Trust will continue to vaccinate its frontline workforce to further reduce the risk of hospital patients contracting flu this winter. Visitors can also help in the fight against flu and other winter illnesses by not coming to the Trust to see relatives and friends in hospital if they have flu and cold symptoms such as fever, chills, headache, cough, body aches and fatigue.

Flu can cause a range of illnesses from mild to severe, even among healthy people. People aged 65 and over, pregnant women, anyone with diabetes, chest or heart conditions and others in at-risk groups are advised to ask their GP about having the flu vaccine.

Our pledge for pride Earlier this year, DBTH backed its local Pride movements, as thousands of colleagues pledged to promote diversity and inclusion within the organisation.

Underlining this ambition, doctors, nurses and other health professionals at DBTH now have the opportunity to sign a ‘Pride Pledge’ and receive a rainbow-themed NHS badge.

Pride (also known as Gay Pride or LGBT Pride) is the positive stance against discrimination towards lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) people to promote self-affirmation, dignity, equality rights, increase their visibility as a social group, build community and celebrate sexual diversity and gender variance. In all, Pride supports and promotes most LGBT rights movements throughout the world through optimism and inclusivity.

The voluntary document and colourful pin are designed to help foster an atmosphere where patients and colleagues alike feel comfortable discussing their sexuality and gender identity.

This doesn’t mean staff have all the answers or are experts in this particular area, but that they are prepared to listen, support and signpost to relevant information.

Recognising the difference the health service can make in this area, increasing awareness amongst clinicians of the issues surrounding people of all genders and sexualities when accessing services can make a huge difference in the quality of hospital care and treatment, as well as an individual’s experience. As such, DBTH is committed to ensuring the Trust is as inclusive and supportive as possible.

Karen Barnard, Director of People and Organisational Development at DBTH, said: “Ensuring we are inclusive and supportive as a Trust is incredibly important. As an organisation which employs almost 7,000 members of staff, it is vitally important that we celebrate the diversity and individuality which makes us so strong as a team. By signing the Pride Pledge, colleagues are signalling to patients, as well as to each other, that we are an open and accepting organisation.

In just three days, the Trust saw over 1,000 colleagues sign up to the Pride Pledge, receiving their rainbow badge as a result.

This included the Trust’s Chief Executive, Richard Parker OBE, Chair of the Board, Suzy Brain England OBE, as a well the organisation’s Executive Team, amongst hundreds of doctors, nurses and allied health professionals.

Patient reminder system launches at DBTH All services at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) can now benefit from a brand new text reminder service, which has been recently launched at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI), helping patients to monitor and keep their clinical appointments, as well as to access service specific information.

eObservations arrives at Bassetlaw Hospital A brand new system has launched at Bassetlaw Hospital, enabling clinicians to electronically record patient observations.

Rolling-out within all six adult wards within the Worksop site, ‘eObservations’ makes use of a mobile device (often an Android phone) and allows health professionals to record patient observations using a secure app. These investigations are then automatically calculated by the system, alerting a senior nurse or doctor if urgent attention is required.

One of the most important tasks within any hospital, ‘clinical observations’ is the term used to describe the multitude of tests and exercises which are used to monitor the health of a patient. Undertaken at regular intervals, from temperature checks to heart rate monitoring, these observations help doctors and nurses understand the condition of their patients, guiding treatment if anything changes.

Dr Mike Whiteside, Physician and Chief Clinical Information Officer at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), said: “This is an incredibly exciting change for the Trust. By using eObservations we will reduce the amount of paperwork we incur daily, while substantially improving patient safety and communication with colleagues should they need urgent attention.

“Ensuring we make best use of technology to improve patient care is incredibly important and will define our success as a Trust in the years to come, helping us to improve patient care, and ultimately aiding us in our vision to be the safest Trust in England, Outstanding in all that we do.”

The roll-out has proven a success so far, with the eObservations systems reporting on the first day of usage: • 2,136 patient observations carried out • Delays in the recording of observations significantly reduced

• Zero calculation errors for NEWS2 (a sepsis diagnosis calculation tool) • 100% timely and appropriate escalation from Health Care Assistant to Registered Nurse • 100% timely and appropriate escalation to Nurse in Charge and Doctors and Advanced Clinical Practitioners. eObservations, provided by Nervecentre, is an extension of Hospital@ introduced to the Trust in early 2019, and helps in the recording and distribution of tasks within wards and departments between health professionals.

Similar to former system, observations are logged centrally on the system, with an accompanying patient record and related notes and alerts visible to trained users. The system will also work out the frequency of required observations, helping clinicians to make the most of their time.

The system is currently being rolled-out to the six adult wards of Bassetlaw Hospital, as well as Endoscopy and Day Surgery. If everything goes to plan, a further deployment will commence in Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital later this year (2019) and early next (2020).

Dr Whiteside continues: “While we implement this latest system we also want to highlight to patients that while clinicians are using mobile devices, they are not checking Facebook or messaging their friends, they are in fact undertaking essential work. If our patients have any questions at all about the system, we encourage them to speak with colleagues who will be more than happy to explain eObservations and its use.”

The launch of eObservations and Hospital@ forms part of DBTH’s ‘Digital Transformation programme, a scheme of work which is looking at making the most of new technologies in order to improve patient care, safety, experience and treatment.

Known as ‘DrDoctor’, this new system initially launched on 1 August within the Trust’s Ophthalmology, Gastroenterology and Respiratory services and has so far sent tens of thousands of messages, reminding patients about upcoming hospital dates. The system has been so successful that the Ophthalmology service has seen missed appointments reduced by more than half in just four weeks.

On Tuesday 1 October, clinicians at DBTH rolled out the system further to all services, including: General Surgery, Audiology, Vascular Surgery, Geriatric Medicine, Diabetic Medicine, Bariatric Surgery, Pain Management, Haematology, Cardiology and Rheumatology, in addition to the eight specialities that were already using it.

To help ensure the continued success of this project, the Trust is urging patients to ensure that their contact details are up-to-date by contacting the reception desk of any service they currently use and checking details via electronic kiosks upon arrival at the hospital.

Dr Mike Whiteside, Physician and Chief Clinical Information Officer at DBTH, said: “In order to get the most from DrDoctor, it is important that we have your most up-to-date contact details. That way the system will be able to send notifications over text and you will be able to respond in turn.”

Nationally, around one in 10 appointments made are missed every year in England, costing the health service millions of pounds.

Unfortunately, DBTH is within the top 25% of all trusts in the country for patients not attending appointments, recording around 140 missed a day or 50,000 each year. Equating to around £6 million in lost funding annually for the local hospitals, in real-terms this wasted cash is the equivalent of 200 nurses, 747 hip replacements or 22,388 MRI scans.

Dr Whiteside continued: “Projects such as this are incredibly exciting for the Trust. Ensuring we make the most of technology is key to our future success as an organisation and will undoubtedly help us to achieve our vision to be the safest Trust in England, outstanding in all that we do.”

DrDoctor is the result of a three month long engagement which took place in late 2017 asking why local people miss hospital appointments.

Local Communities supporting DBTH Charity

DBTH Birth appeal – going Above and Beyond in maternity care Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Charity has launched an appeal to improve the maternity experience at Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Bassetlaw Hospital.

Seeking the support of its local residents The Doncaster and Bassetlaw Birth Appeal hopes to raise £100,000 to provide additional equipment and enhance the environments in maternity units to give women, babies and their families in Doncaster and Bassetlaw the very best possible care.

“I am extremely proud of our midwifery staff and we receive lots of positive feedback about the care and support received by women and their families who have had a baby at the Trust.”

Lois Mellor, Head of Midwifery at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), said: “With more than 5,000 babies born in our hospitals each year we want to improve the birth environments on offer to all women in Doncaster and Bassetlaw.

“Studies show that when a woman feels calm and in control of how she gives birth, both medical intervention and adverse

outcomes are reduced. By raising these funds we will be able to improve the maternity environments so family members can stay and support women before, during and after labour, to help them remain calm and in control.

“We don’t currently have the furniture to allow partners or family members to rest during a longer labour or to stay with a new mum who needs extra support. This can add

unnecessary worries to a significant, exciting life experience.”

Funds from the appeal will help the Trust to provide items such as: • Reclining chairs for partners/ family members to stay with women who are in labour on our labour wards • Chair beds for partners/ family members to stay with women post birth who need extra support after a caesarean or induction • Updates to furniture, décor and blinds to help give both units a homely, calm and relaxing environment • Updates to décor and furniture in the family room, to support families during difficult times Lois continues: “I am extremely proud of our midwifery staff and we receive lots of positive feedback about the care and support received by women and their families who have had a baby at the Trust. However, the feedback often highlights that the facilities could be improved to be in line with the excellent care we provide.

“Following on from our recent successful appeal for knitted hats for neonatal babies born on the unit I’m sure that our local residents will once again rally around to support us to make these positive changes”.

Yoga group raises funds for DBTH A class of local yoga enthusiasts has raised £700 for DBTH Charity.

Led by instructor Dr Ravi Karwa, Associate Specialist in Gastroenterology at the Trust, the Doncaster chapter of the Sri Sri School of Yoga put together a special celebration for International Yoga Day (Sunday 21 June), during which they managed to raise an impressive £1,400 in donations. This money was then divided up equally between the Doncaster Deaf Trust, who hosted the event and DBTH’s Special Care Baby Unit, where the money will go towards improving patient care.

Speaking about this, Dr Karwa said: ‘’Doing some good whilst also practicing your hobby is an incredibly fulfilling experience. All of us at the Sri Sri School are passionate about what we do and how it makes us feel, but having the knowledge that we’re also making a difference through it is even better.’’

“We are always building upon our previous successes and I cannot wait to see how things will progress into the future.”

The day itself – which consisted of a three hour long yoga session, an assortment of fun activities and plenty of food – has been taking place every year for the past five years, back when the fledgling group was still getting off the ground and had only eleven members.

Yet since those humble beginnings the Sri Sri School, and by extension their fundraising efforts, has grown dramatically, to the point where it now attracts upwards of a 100 voluntary participants. As such, they are now

With the aid of his wife, he organises the regular sessions, leads classes and coordinates big events like the one for international yoga day. ‘’We look forward to this occasion every single year and it just keeps on improving!

It has been such a pleasure to witness it blossom from just a few individuals celebrating their favourite pastime, to a roomful of people all coming together in service of a common, charitable goal. We are always building upon our previous successes and I cannot wait to see how things will progress into the future. With that in mind, I am pleased to announce that we have already begun planning for 2020!’’

Last year, DBTH used its share of the donation to purchase high tech breathing apparatus for infants. Continuing in this theme, the money from 2019’s event will go towards specialist thermometers used for monitoring the temperature of babies.

Garry Swann, former Medical Photographer has used his extensive knowledge and access to the hospitals’ archives to curate over 100 pages filled with images and photographs from yesteryear. All of our hospitals at Bassetlaw, Doncaster, Mexborough and Retford have their own sections, with a short history detailing their growth and development.

Annual Members’ Meeting The Trust’s Annual Members’ Meeting took place on Thursday 26 September at the Keepmoat Stadium in Doncaster An opportunity to hear about the work and achievements of the organisation in 2018/19, the event was a huge success. Thank you to all of our members who attended, and to all colleagues for supporting throughout the day.

The event was live-streamed for the first time and, throughout the meeting, over 400 people tuned in to watch.

Council of Governors Meetings The next Council of Governors meeting will be on Thursday 30 Jan in the Education Centre at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. The public section of the meeting will run from 5.30pm to 7.30pm. Dates are available on the website. Please check ahead beforehand as it may change.

History Matters

A Proud Heritage On Friday 17th May a small but important ceremony took place in Mexborough town centre. On the external wall of Green’s former butcher’s shop at the corner of Hope Street and High Street a plaque funded by the Trust commemorating Fred and Ann Green’s significant contribution to the town was unveiled by Trust Chairman Suzy Brain England and Bill Lawrence, Secretary of Mexborough & District Heritage Society.

The Society has embarked on a Blue Plaque Project to recognise Mexborough people whose lives have been notable in some way.

Several former residents have been identified as worthy of this honour, ranging from war heroes to poets and other locally and nationally eminent figures.

Fred and Ann Green’s legacy will be familiar to readers: their £11.5 million bequest to the Trust has enabled the provision of facilities which would not have been possible without it, always following their express wish that Mexborough people, in particular, should benefit. Many projects, both large and small, have been made possible by their generosity; these include the Fred and Ann Green Rehabilitation Centre at Montagu Hospital, the Fred and Ann Green Eye Centre at DRI, and the regular shuttle bus service which transports Mexborough residents to Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

In the years that followed the tragic death of their 15-year-old son Alan in a cycling accident, Fred and Ann worked tirelessly at their thriving butchery business, and also became active in the community life of Mexborough. They took a leading role in ‘Merrier Mexborough’, social occasions shared with local business people. Fred became President of Mexborough Cricket Club and President of Denaby and District Choral Society. In 1950 he was elected President of the Mexborough branch of the Rotary Club, and Ann became Treasurer of the Inner Wheel, Rotary’s Ladies’ section. As well as enjoying theatrical productions and holidays abroad, through their Rotary membership Fred and Ann made many friends overseas. In 1981 Fred was accorded a rare honour, the Paul Harris Fellowship Award, in recognition of his long service to the Rotary Club.

In 1958 the Greens sold their business to Associated Dairies and Farm Foods (later to become ASDA); though the couple were already financially well-off, as a director and shareholder of ASDA Fred watched his fortune grow as the company expanded to become one of the UK’s largest supermarket retailers.

Ann died in 1980 and Fred in 1998. In life, too, Fred and Ann were benevolent. In addition to several smaller donations to Montagu Hospital, in 1982 Fred made a generous contribution

towards the Children’s Hospital at DRI. Though numerous memorials to Fred and Ann Green exist in the form of buildings and various health-related projects, it is entirely fitting that their generosity towards local people should be recognised by one of Mexborough & District Heritage Society’s Blue Plaques.
