Our future vision for Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals Over the past 18 months we have gone through some substantial changes as a Trust, some of which have been challenging, and others exciting, but all of which point towards a bright future for our patients. As we move forward together, we set out a new strategy which describes what we want to achieve over the next five years and how we are going to get there.

In developing this five year vision, nearly 700 members of Team DBTH gave their thoughts, feedback and suggestions on this direction, through clinical governance meetings, our various

DBTH in 2016/17 It’s been a busy 12 months for the Trust and here are just a few highlights in 2016/17 The highlight of the year undoubtedly came in January 2017 as we were awarded teaching hospital status, becoming Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (DBTH). We gained this accreditation due to our longstanding commitment to improving education and growing research.

As a Trust we take pride in the quality of care we provide to our patients, striving to make improvements to our services.

For four years in a row we have achieved reductions in Clostridium Difficile infections, serious falls, severe avoidable pressure ulcers and serious incidents.

Research and Development at the Trust has also continued to grow. This activity has increased, and our commitment to research has been acknowledged externally with our Clinical Research Team shortlisted in the Nursing Times’ 2016 awards.

Complimenting our commitment to delivering state-of-the-art facilities for the team to work within, this year we have also seen significant capital developments, totalling £10.1 million. In November 2016, we opened the Fred and Ann Green Eye Centre, after investment from the Fred and Ann Green Legacy, while we also invested £275k in a new Children’s Outpatients Department at Bassetlaw Hospital, amongst other projects.

Another notable success of the year came from our fantastic Health and Wellbeing Team.

Thanks to their efforts we were the first acute Trust in the country to vaccinate over 75 per cent of our front line staff, giving the jab to over 3,500 doctors and nurses in just two months.

Over the year we have strengthened our links with health and care partners in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, working as part of the Working Together Vanguard to develop new care models. We are also an integral partner of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) which is set to become a first wave Accountable Care System. This is thanks to established strong relationships with neighbouring Trusts and Clinical Commissioning Groups and a proven history of working together to improve health and care for our population.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff, governors, members, volunteers, partner organisations, commissioners, regulators and everyone else who has worked with us in 2016/17. This positive support has been overwhelming and has contributed to what has been a successful, yet challenging, year for the Trust.

Gaining teaching hospital status in 2017 was a huge achievement and creates a wonderful opportunity to develop our education and research portfolios to benefit patients and will help us to continue to attract and retain high calibre staff.

DBTH has been through a recent period of financial turnaround and are now moving into a period of transformation where we will look to see how we can deliver quality patient care in the most effective and efficient ways possible.

To achieve this transformation we recognise the need to be the best partner we can to work with other health and social care partners across Doncaster and Bassetlaw and South Yorkshire so our patients experience seamless and integrated care and we make best use of resources across the area.

Creating facilities for better learning and education – The HUB In order to offer the best learning and development facilities at Bassetlaw, we have recently opened a new and purposefully designed centre called the Hub, which incorporates training, education and library services at Bassetlaw Hospital. The teams, previously based at the bottom of the Bassetlaw Hospital site, now have a refurbished facility incorporating educational learning and meeting rooms along with library and information services.

This new facility is based in the former Management Suite and has been renamed ‘The Hub’ following a competition asking staff to think of a name that would encapsulate all the services under one roof in a central location.

The Hub has been refurbished at a cost of £30,000 and confirms the Trust’s continued investment in services and facilities at Bassetlaw Hospital. Following this investment, we now have an excellent space for training and meetings, along with a library facility, all of which will be more accessible for staff.

Making best use of our facilities at Bassetlaw – Bariatric surgery: DBTH has been performing bariatric surgery (specialist weight loss surgery) for over six years and has treated close to 500 patients. This very specialist type of surgery includes a range of procedures, including a gastric band, balloon, sleeve and bypass, performed on people with a body mass index (BMI) of over 40, or 35 if the patient has problems such as type two diabetes.

The results of the weight loss varies from patient to patient and is dependent on the procedure, however many patients go on to see a 30 per cent reduction in their BMI over two years with some patients reducing BMI by more than 50 per cent.

The results of the surgery are not just cosmetic Mr Balchandra, Consultant Bariatric Surgeon, explains: “Many of the patients undergoing a bariatric procedure suffer from health conditions relating to obesity, for example type two diabetes.

“A phenomenal 62 per cent of all of our diabetic patients who have undergone a bariatric

procedure are now completely in remission from their type two diabetes and a further 65 per cent saw significant improvements in their condition as a result of surgery. The benefits to health are multiple with many patients reporting improvements in hypertension, increased mobility and a reduced need for medication for depression.”

In May 2016 Mr Balchandra and his specialist surgical team began to perform this specialist surgery at Bassetlaw

Hospital and since then the service has grown, with a full patient pathway now in place, meaning that the service is offered from start to finish at Bassetlaw Hospital where two additional Nurse Specialists are now based.

With more elective bariatric procedures planned to be performed and specialist bariatric seminars to take place at Bassetlaw in the future, bariatric surgery is leading where other areas of specialist surgery could follow.

Helping our residents stay out of hospital Ensuring that we are not only reactive with our care but also proactive is very important to our future direction. Our Bassetlaw site now offers an eye screening service for people living with diabetes in Worksop and surrounding areas.

Diabetes is a condition that is increasing at a significant rate nationally and in Bassetlaw alone we have around 8,000 people living with diabetes.

Diabetic eye screening is an essential part of diabetes care checking for diabetic retinopathy, a condition that can lead to sight loss if not detected early and treated. Everyone aged 12 and over with diabetes is invited to attend for this screening once a year.

This screening service has been running at our Doncaster site since 2003 and this exciting new development ensures that everyone living with diabetes in Doncaster, Bassetlaw and the Dearne Valley has the opportunity to attend this important screening, closer to home.

Innovative diagnosis and developments Improving emergency care We will continue to develop the Emergency Department (ED) at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) which is the second largest in South Yorkshire. You may be aware of recent funding from the Department of Health, totalling £975,000, money which will be used to expand and rearrange the ED into a more practical layout.

The new-look area will include a ninebedded resuscitation room and a further 10 cubicles to address the demand of the busy services which are likely to increase with the proposed changes to the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw emergency stroke treatment and similar developments. To compliment this work we will be moving a CT scanner to improve how quickly patients can be diagnosed in an emergency care setting.

In July, we installed FilmArray, a stateof-the-art screening tool, funded by the Fred and Ann Green Legacy. This cutting edge tech can diagnose causes of meningitis and encephalitis within an hour, a huge improvement when compared with standard testing which can take up to seven days.

By making use of devices such as FilmArray, we can offer the best possible care to our patients in Doncaster, Bassetlaw and beyond, while potentially cutting down on the amount of time people will have to stay in hospital.

Chief Biomedical Scientist in Microbiology, David Green, with FilmArray

and Control at the Trust, said: “I am delighted that, with this kind donation, we have been able to purchase this specialist equipment.

By making use of FilmArray we will be able to quickly and accurately diagnose cases of meningitis and encephalitis, enabling us to offer treatment much sooner, increasing the chances of a full recovery for our patients.”

In the coming years it will be our focus to ensure that our acute care is complimented by cutting edge technology, improving the patient’s journey through the hospital, diagnosing and treating people quicker, ultimately leading to better outcomes.

Focus on innovative improvements At DRI we are currently piloting projects which will help make the organisation more efficient, helping us to cut down on waste and eliminate unnecessary cancellations.

Planned to roll-out this September, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an exciting development for our medical records. This smart improvement will mean that patients’ notes will be tagged with a small tracking device, which can then be located using a GPS tracking system.

As a hospital site which sees upwards of half a million visitors a year, managing this volume of medical records can be difficult, but with the aid of RFID, notes will be easier to find. This little improvement will mean fewer cancelled appointments and operations.

Developing our future workforce Alongside our partners in South Yorkshire and also Health Education England, together we have been looking at new and innovative ways to meet workforce demands. In order to address potential staffing shortfalls in the future, we have been supporting and piloting new roles an example of which are Assistant Practitioners.

The new role will help bridge the skills gap between an experienced Health Care Assistant and a Registered Nurse. The first group of 22 trainees embarked on their 18 month development programme at the end of January, with a further five starting at the end of March.

Once qualified the 27 Trainee Assistant Practitioners (TAPs) will support staff on specialist wards and clinical departments across Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital.

The aim of which is to have staff working at a higher level than a Health Care Assistant and who will take an active part of the Multi-Disciplinary Team within the ward.

training with a recognised qualification and confirms our commitment to invest in all grades of staff.”

We are proud to be one of several trusts across The Humber and Yorkshire region involved in the trainee assistant practitioner project. The scheme has been introduced to help NHS trusts to better meet the changing health needs of the populations they care for.

A centre of excellence for patients and staff Our state of the art Rehabilitation Centre at Montagu Hospital provides expert rehabilitation care, delivered by specialist doctors, nurses and therapists, tailored to each patient’s individual needs.

The centre provides care for patients who have recovered from illnesses or injuries that aren’t strong enough to support themselves at home yet, but don’t necessarily need hospital treatment.

The centre at Montagu is specially designed, built, equipped and staffed to provide the very best care. Our vision is that this site will become a centre of excellence, providing expert care for patients from Doncaster, Barnsley and Sheffield, meaning that patients across the region will spend less time in hospital and quickly start their everyday lives again.

Ann Green Legacy, can use a training bathroom, kitchen and bedroom to simulate everyday life and help them regain strength.

They can also use an IT suite, training laundry room and outside spaces where they can practice skills and hobbies as part of their recovery and preparations to return home.

Patients wear their own clothes and are encouraged to be up and about all day, using the kitchen facilities to make hot drinks,

breakfast or snacks as if they were at home. There are normal household stairs and carpets, as well as the shallower steps usually found in hospitals, to help patients get used to walking on different surfaces.

Making best use of our facilities at Montagu We are committed to making best use of our elective facilities at Montagu, delivering the best and most innovative treatment for patients, an example of which can be found in the first corneal transplant in Doncaster which has been performed at the site.

Robert Mansfield travelled from Lincolnshire to undergo the operation which took 90 minutes and has recovered with restored eyesight.

A corneal graft is a transplant operation during which the cornea (the clear front window of the eye) is removed and replaced with a cornea from a donor. Robert underwent a partial transplant which means only a thin inner layer of his cornea was replaced. Whilst this operation is much more technical than a traditional corneal transplant, it doesn’t require the use of stitches which meant that Robert’s recovery was quicker and there was less chance of infection or permanently weakening his eye.

Robert’s new cornea was held in place using an air bubble until it attached itself to the deep layer of the cornea just a few days later.

Before the operation Robert had a condition which was causing his eyesight to deteriorate but within eight days of the op he was able to read and drive.

Robert said: “Most of the time I forget I’ve had the operation. I’ve had no pain at all and the recovery has been seamless with my eyesight back up to driving level which is a huge relief for me as I need to drive to carry out my role as a Church of England Vicar and Mental Health Worker.”

It is a fair distance from my home but the journey was more than worthwhile just for the outstanding care - a small price to pay for my eyesight! I would reassure anyone going for this operation that they are in very good hands.”

to our patients in South Yorkshire. These patients can now have this operation closer to home and are benefitting from the latest treatment and technology to help restore their sight. This has only been possible with the support and dedication of our staff, clinical and non-clinical.”

Over the next few years we aim to offer more planned operations like this one in our Theatres at Montagu Hospital to make sure we are making the best use of our facilities there for the benefit of our patients.

Prevention and self-care Montagu hospital is the hub for delivering AAA screening across all of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, a hugely important and potentially life-saving appointment for our residents.

An AAA is a condition with mainly affects men aged between 65 and 74. It is a swelling of the aorta (which is the main artery in your body, carrying blood from your heart to your major organs) and can be fatal if left undetected and the aorta ruptures.

As part of the Screening Programme all men in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw receive letters when they turn 65 inviting them to an ultrasound scan to check for the condition.

The screening takes place in a rage of local and community venues across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, including Montagu hospital, which is ideally placed for many residents in

Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham.

As a Trust, and as part of the Sustainability and Transformation Partnership we are committed to promoting preventative healthcare across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw, ensuring people stay healthy for longer and are able to access services closer to home.

How we will achieve this To be able to implement our future vision for the Trust, we will need to action a number of what we call ‘enabling’ strategies, which will complete our intended direction for the organisation:

Clinical Service Late last year, we embarked on a detailed review of our clinical services at speciality level, led by the senior staff at the Trust. This audit led to us being able to develop detailed plans for each of the services, taking into account national best practice as well as local need.

Information Management and Technology This plan has been developed to articulate a vision for Information and Technology that supports our overarching vision. This includes moving towards an Electronic Patient Record, improving patient experience and eliminating paper wastage.

Patient Experience and Engagement The strategy describes how staff will understand their responsibility in ensuring each patient not only receives excellent clinical care, but that it is delivered in a manner that treats them as an individual, recognises their needs and cares for them with empathy and compassion. The plan also outlines how this will be achieved and how progress will be monitored.

Estates and Facilities The five year Estates and Facilities Strategy ensures that the Trust provides safe, secure, and high quality healthcare accommodation to support current and future needs. The plan identifies where we are now, where we want to be and how we will get there.

Governance and Assurance The Trust has significantly improved patient safety and care quality for patients over the last three years. This strategy outlines our aims to sustain improvements in care, deliver what is known as ‘evidence-based care’ and embed a culture of transparency and openness.

Research and Development This strategy supports care quality improvement, innovation and service transformation. It will embed high quality research in all aspects of clinical care delivery so as to contribute to the evidence base that leads to improved patient outcomes.

Quality Improvement and Innovation This strategy outlines the processes for developing and embedding a quality improvement and innovation culture at the Trust and is underpinned by an action plan for implementation across the organisation.

People and Organisational Development This strategy recognises the importance of staff having a positive experience and feeling supported by their managers, so we will refresh our leadership strategy and talent management plan to help develop members of Team DBTH. This refreshed plan will also include more effective use of our workforce systems to free up managers’ capacity.

Finance and Commercial This strategy outlines the financial backing for our five year vision for the Trust, outlining underlying planning assumptions, identifying any expected gaps between our income and expenditure and ensuring we stay on a sound financial footing throughout this process.

Health and social care plans across all of South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw We are an integral partner of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Sustainability and Transformation Partnership (STP) which has now become a first wave Accountable Care System (ACS). As part of the ACS we work together with many health and social care partners across the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw footprint as illustrated below.

Being part of this wider system provides a number of benefits to DBTH and the population we serve, as well as further strengthening our work with our local clinical commissioning partners and our local authorities.

As an active partner in the ACS, we continue to work together to share best practice in improving the services that are needed to provide health education and prevention and to enable improved access to high quality care in hospitals and specialist centres when this is required – so that no matter where people live they get the same standards, experience and outcomes for their care and treatment.

Working together we can also help the

partners to achieve more efficiency when we buy services or goods together to provide better value for money. The ACS footprint and main partners encompass organisations within South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw and as a partner we have helped to shape the ACS’ priorities and objectives.

News from the Governors

Governor Election results In our recent governor election we appointed seven new public governors and two new staff governors.

There were two public seats available in Doncaster with 14 nominations for the seats. We welcome Dr Mark Iain Bright and Lynne Logan as new governors to the Trust.

Following the resignation of Dev Das, the candidate who finished third in the Doncaster ballot, Dr David Northwood, was also elected under the rules of the constitution There were three public seats available in Bassetlaw and eight nominations for the seats. We welcome three new governors: Andrina Hardcastle, Peter Abell and Sharon Cook. Sharon replaces Steven Marsh who resigned his seat following election.

for the Rest of England and Wales and was joined by new governor Liz Staveley-Churton.

In a close competition between the two nominations for the position of Staff-Nonclinical Governor, Duncan Carratt was elected.

Turnout across the four contested areas was just over 17%.

Lorraine Robinson (Staff - Nursing and Midwifery) and Karl Bower (Staff - Other Healthcare Professionals) were elected without contest.

Thank you to all the candidates who put themselves forward for the roles and to all the members who voted. We would also like to thank to Peter Husselbee (Bassetlaw), John Plant (Doncaster), Dev Das (Doncaster) and Pat Knight (Partner) for their service as governors to the Trust.

Annual Members’ Meeting The Annual Members’ Meeting will take place at 4.00pm on Wednesday 20 September 2017 in the Fred and Ann Green Rehabilitation Centre, Montagu Hospital.

The first hour is an opportunity for guests to browse some of the displays. At 5.00pm the formal part of the meeting will begin with a presentation on the Annual Report and Accounts to the Board of Governors, members and guests. Members and the public will have the opportunity to ask questions about the activities of the Trust during 2016/17.

Introducing our new governors I am looking forward to being a Governor.

Hospitals are complex organisations and I have an opportunity to share in the governance and see how things are managed – I relish this. I admire and value the NHS and now can do a bit to contribute. Organisations and how they work have always been an interest, professionally as a manager of a large college and in a range of roles within the Bassetlaw Labour Party.

I was delighted to be elected as a Governor, and hope that I can do justice to the role.

Having worked for the Trust for over 40 years as a Ward Sister, I think I can use my experience to help the Trust maintain and improve services for local people.

When I saw that there was three standing for the election I did not feel that I would be chosen, it was a surprise to find I had been elected and I am very pleased, I would like to thank those who voted for me.

I am co-owner with my husband of a First Aid Training business, I am supposed to be semi-retired but seem to be always busy.

I am a member of the Order of Women Freemasons attending three Lodges and helping to raise funds for charitable causes.

Since my retirement, I have started exploring my family tree and have enjoyed travelling to my favourite destination, Florida. I enjoy watching tennis, and and joined ‘the queue’ at Wimbledon. - Lynne Logan

I am delighted to have been elected as Public Governor for Bassetlaw. It’s a privilege. I am looking forward to working with colleagues and ensuring the needs and voice of Bassetlaw residents are heard. Our local hospital has always been and continues to be, important to us. We need to ensure we retain and maintain the excellent facilities it provides to us – we value everything about it not least the dedicated caring staff – recognising the hospital is the area’s biggest employer.

When putting yourself forward for an election there can be that initial sense of trepidation. The election result delighted and surprised me in equal measure. I feel honoured to represent the people of Doncaster, as well as support members of the Trust in this role over the next three years. I hope being a Governor will allow me to exert influence where it is needed.

With a background in research, reading journal articles and analysing diverse datasets feature prominently here. Cinema, theatre, and eating-out are my more prosaic interests. – Mark Bright

Through my involvement with St John Ambulance I was contacted by our sister organisation in Germany Johanniter Unfall Hilfe to work with them overseas, this took me to Afghanistan, Sri Lanka (where I lived for over two years), Sumatra, Indonesia and Haiti. I also lived and worked in Kenya for 14 months as a consultant to St John Kenya.

I have two Irish Setters who demand much walking. I love knitting, at present I am knitting hats, mitts and bootees for premature babies. I read when I have the time, particularly crime thrillers which include lots forensic pathology – the more grisly the better! – Liz Staveley-Churton

I retired from the Trust seven years ago, but continue to help run the hospital Sports and Social Club where I have been Secretary for approximately 30 years and Treasurer for 25! We enjoy lots of theatre trips, weekends away and long haul trips. I love seeing people enjoying themselves (and I love holidays). I just wish we could boost membership!

At home, I am a grandmother and care for my two grandsons during all school holidays (aged 10 and 11) – the youngest, Bailey, being disabled with Cerebral Palsy – he’s very active and competes in triathlons, while his brother, Finlay, is a budding Gymnast having won many medals with several gold! News from the Governors As a previous vice-chair of governors for a Doncaster Special School, I was aware of the impact a strong governing body can have on an organisation, which is the reason why I decided to become a staff governor at DBTH. I feel thrilled to represent ‘other health professionals’ at the Trust and look forward to getting involved with the governing body.

Away from work I am a keen traveller who enjoys visiting friends and family far and wide and spending time with a good book. - Karl Bower

I was somewhat surprised, very pleased and a little apprehensive on hearing I could take on the role of Governor. I’m hopeful that after a period of acclimatisation I will be able to carry out all the aspects of the role to a high standard and make a positive difference in the provision of healthcare for Doncaster residents.

Also at present I am getting used to retirement with intentions to keep skiing (until the knees finally give out), avoid gardening and travel more at home and abroad. I have just fulfilled one ambition to complete the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge and hope to complete a Liverpool to Leeds bike ride next month.

Further afield I would love to visit New Orleans and Antartica, but not on the same trip! In the meantime I can see more of my family, drink the odd pint of Black Sheep and watch Game of Thrones! – Dr David Northwood

Our next Board of Governors meeting takes place 26 October at 6pm in Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s Education Centre. Members are welcome to observe the public session.

I was delighted to be elected as a Governor. I’m keen to make a positive impact in my time at the Trust (nine years so far) and I hope that I can take this attitude into this role for the next three years and hopefully beyond.

When not at work I’m very into sports and enjoy partaking in and watching a wide variety. I like to keep myself fit by attending my local gym most evenings and over the weekend, I find it helps me process the day. I referee semi-professional football, and have done for the past 18 years. Over that time I’ve travelled to a wide variety of places up and down the country and it has even taken me abroad on occasions. I visited some fantastic grounds in the UK from large Premier League stadiums to some tremendous small community based clubs.

Outside of that, my wife and I enjoy a trip to the cinema to see the latest films on a regular basis and meeting friends and family who are spread across the local area.

Up until recently, I was chair and founder member of an amputee group - a role I tackled with great enthusiasm and compassion and I hope I inspired others to move forward through their darkest times and embrace the life they have. I have also been a volunteer for many local community groups to help others, which is a quality that I will continue to develop throughout my life.

History Matters

A Remarkable Legacy In 1998 Fred Stanley Green, a retired pork butcher in Mexborough, died at the age of 95. In his will he bequeathed £11.5million to Doncaster Royal and Montagu Hospital NHS Trust, to be used for the benefit of Mexborough people.

How was a local butcher from a small South Yorkshire town able to amass such a fortune?

Fred had inherited an established family business, founded by his father Joseph. In 1926 he married a distant relative, Annice (always known as Ann) Stokes. In the following year their son Alan was born, and three years later Fred took over his father’s business. The shop prospered, and the future seemed bright.

Sadly, their happiness was marred on 2 January 1943 by a tragic accident when Alan, then 15, was knocked from his new bicycle by a tram in Bank Street, not far from his father’s shop.

Alan died at the scene, leaving Fred and Ann without their beloved only son and potential heir to their business.

In the following years Fred and Ann threw their energies into their business, becoming especially renowned for their succulent pork pies. This reputation resulted on one occasion in a stroke of luck for Montagu Hospital. Fred had a regular Christmastime order from a local public house, the Montagu Arms, for a giant pork pie to be cut and handed out as a treat to customers. The pie was made as usual but Fred, unable to deliver it himself, left a note on the pie “Deliver to Montagu”. The deliverer misunderstood the instruction and, to her delight and amazement, handed the pie over to Montagu Hospital’s Matron. Her message of thanks to Fred for his generous Christmas

gift for her patients was so effusive that Fred hadn’t the heart to tell her of the error – and for years thereafter Montagu Hospital was the recipient of a splendid Christmas pork pie!

In the 1950s an organisation named Associated Dairies and Farm Foods was seeking successful small businesses to add to its portfolio, and in 1958 offered to buy Fred’s business. Both Fred and Ann were in their 50s and well-off, but with no family to carry on the business, decided to sell. Fred

was appointed to the Board of the parent company, which in due course became ASDA, one of the UK’s big five supermarkets. As the company grew, so did Fred’s fortune; the decision to sell had made Fred a wealthy man.

He and Ann were popular members of the social scene in Mexborough and Fred became Chairman of the local cricket club. After Ann died in 1980, Fred continued to live at their house, 92 Adwick Road, directly opposite Montagu Hospital. In 1982 he donated £150,000 towards Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s Children’s Ward.

Fred and Ann Green’s munificent legacy has enabled the Trust to provide many services and facilities that would not have been possible without it. The shuttle buses connecting the three hospitals, the new Eye Department at DRI, the Rehabilitation Department at Montagu Hospital and numerous other projects all owe some or all of their existence to the bequest, born out of a tragedy many years earlier.

This portrait of Alan Fred Green, only son of Trust benefactors Fred and Ann Green, has recently been hung alongside those of his parents in Montagu Hospital’s Board Room.

Alan was fatally injured in a cycling accident on 2nd January 1943, aged 15. Alan is commemorated along with his parents and paternal grandparents and also Fred’s younger brother Harry, who also died in a road accident, on the family gravestone in Mexborough Cemetery.

Engaging Activities at Eastgate Care A raft of activities take place every week to engage our residents, in a pleasant fulfilling way; gardening, baking, art, sales, singing......to name but a few; Here is a snap shot of a busy week, as well as caring we have lots to offer at our nursing homes.

The Eastwood Brownies came along to do their “Entertainment badge” at Alexandra House. They truly entertained us with, jokes, poem recital, singing and dancing. Residents said ‘it was such a treat to see all the youngsters in the home bringing such talent with them.’ The girls were presented with their entertainment badges and all went home with a little thank you treat.

Resident, Alan is a keen artist and since moving to Alex House has carried on with his hobby. Debbie wheels Alan round to Eastwood Artists club at Hilltop church, where he meets up with his old friends. ‘It’s great for Alan to be able to carry on with his interests inside and outside the home, it means a lot to him and to us.’

Activities Co-ordinator, Debbie Bonser, pictured, does a great job organising daily entertainment to suit all types of individuals at the home.

She emanates warmth, fun and understanding and part of the local community at Eastwood. Care Home Manager, Caroline Carraher, is fully behind all the activities; ‘I especially love seeing the old and young together. The joy of giving and sharing is captured so well in the recent School, Choir and Brownie visits.’
