Our members are valuable to us because they offer up their local knowledge at member events and through feedback surveys which help us to shape our services.

Members can also vote in governor elections and stand to be governors themselves.

Doncaster Royal Infirmary holds international teaching event For the 15th consecutive year, DBTH has hosted the international Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Masterclass at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

This wildly popular annual event, which ran from 25 to 27 January 2019, brings together clinical experts from around the world where they share their expertise, demonstrate recent medical breakthroughs in patient care and celebrate their collective achievements.

The ENT Masterclass is always bustling with academic activity and inspiring innovations.

This year was no exception in this regard, with esteemed delegates visiting from the UK, Australia, China, the Maldives, Germany, Argentine, Lithuania, Ireland and Switzerland.

Attended by over 100 trainees and 25 faculty members, due to demand many of the courses were sold-out and over-subscribed.

The event formally kicked-off with a welcome address by Richard Parker OBE, Chief Executive at DBTH, who spoke of the Trust’s goal to promote further surgical training and highlighted how the ENT Masterclass fed into this aim. In particular, he praised the organisers for expanding the annual event across the globe, so that experts worldwide can get involved and share their expertise.

There were many interesting sessions which took place over the three-day event, including a total of 31 lectures, three panel discussions and a pair of interactive classes. One of the highlights saw the appearance of a fivemember delegation from the prestigious Capital Medical University in Beijing, which was led by Prof Liangfa Liu. Delighted with the success, Mr Shahed

Quraishi OBE, consultant and founding director of the event, said: “The Masterclass is always an incredibly useful forum for ENT surgeons, spreading knowledge, illuminating new developments and providing a valuable opportunity to network. I would therefore like to extend my deepest gratitude to everyone who helped pull this together. In particular, I would like to thank Trust for all of its support

and encouragement, as well as the volunteer faculty for their tremendous contributions.

After all, without their hard work and dedication, this academic venture would not have been possible.’’

The first day culminated in a course dinner, where Suzy Brain England OBE, Trust Chair, was the chief guest. Speaking about this, Suzy said: “I am proud that DBTH has been hosting this Masterclass for 15 years. We must thank Mr Quraishi for all he does to develop and promote the programme.

“It has gone from strength to strength, attracting visiting faculty, Professors and experts in their field from Australia, Germany, China, and other parts of the UK. The event was stimulating and was filmed for YouTube to extend even further this free international learning opportunity.’

In addition to all of the enlightening courses and lectures, this year was notable for another reason, as it marked the launch of a live-stream training channel on YouTube. This makes the ENT Masterclass the first medical course in the UK achieve such a feat, allowing even more people to participate.

Going forward, Mr Quraishi will be hosting similar events in London and Bahrain, which promise to be just as informative, engaging and inclusive.

Celebrating our Staff

OBE for Trust’s Chief Executive Richard Parker has overseen significant improvements to the organisation’s overall performance, working to develop the quality of clinical services.

Born and raised in the Manor and Hackenthorpe areas of Sheffield, Richard has spent almost his entire career within the NHS in South Yorkshire, qualifying as a Registered General Nurse through Sheffield School of Nursing in 1985, one of only two males in his qualifying group.

Richard subsequently specialised in intensive care nursing at Sheffield Northern General Hospital, Nottingham Queens Medical Centre and Leeds General Infirmary. In 1992 he joined, what was, Doncaster and Montagu Hospitals as Clinical Nurse Specialist for Intensive Care, later becoming Assistant Associate Manager of Anaesthetics and Theatre Services.

In 2002, Richard was appointed as Director of Nursing for Critical Care, Anaesthesia and Operating Services at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals, becoming Deputy Chief Nurse in 2005, before rising to the role of Chief Operating Officer.

The Chief Executive of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), Richard Parker, has been awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours List for his services to ‘health and social care’.

Speaking about this award Richard said: “I am truly humbled to have been appointed OBE and it is an honour I receive with the utmost pride and humility. Throughout my career within the NHS I have worked with extraordinarily talented individuals, who have used their talents to the benefit of countless patients. To have been able to

Since becoming Chief Executive in 2017, Richard has overseen a number of improvements such as better infection rates, lower incidence of avoidable harms and the Trust is currently on a five-year Improvement journey.

The NHS is a fertile-ground for talented individuals, and throughout his career as a nurse, and also senior manager within the health service, Richard has demonstrated what a capable and skilled individual he is.”

Garry Swann honoured at investiture ceremony Garry Swann, former Medical Photographer and current Archivist has been honoured for his services to Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals at his investiture ceremony last week.

The ceremony, performed by HM LordLieutenant of South Yorkshire Andrew Coombe, took place at the Mansion House in Doncaster and was attended by Garry’s close friends and family, along with the Civic Mayor of Doncaster, Majid Khan.

Garry was named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list last summer and awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM).

Garry, who has completed over half of century of service to the NHS, was born in Doncaster in 1941. Having trained in Sheffield, he attained his certification from the British Institute of Professional Photography and in 1966 was appointed to set up Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s first Department of Medical Illustration.

photographers, during his time as Head of Medical Photography at Doncaster, Garry trained a new generation of photographers, one of whom heads the department today.

Since his retirement, Garry has remained a very active member of DBTH. He manages the Trust’s archive of photographs and other memorabilia, preserving and sharing the Trust’s long and illustrious history in his books and writing a regular column in the Trust magazine. His collections have been the subject of several exhibitions, gracing permanent displays on the walls of the hospital.

Suzy Brain England OBE, Chair of the Board at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals, said: “Garry’s knowledge and experience of clinical photography has formed the foundations of a very successful team of photographers, still excelling in the field 50 years later. Garry has helped to keep the illustrious history of the Trust alive through his collections and writings and we are most grateful to Garry for this, particularly for his efforts in producing his most recent book which captures our history and raises funds for our charity.”

The British Empire Medal was established in 1922 and is awarded for civil or military service worthy of recognition by the Crown.

Finance Team scoop Yorkshire and Humber award The finance department at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) has been named ‘Provider Finance Team of the Year’ at the Healthcare Financial Management Association’s Yorkshire and Humber Branch Conference 2019.

The award recognises the contribution that an organisation’s finance team has made in the last twelve months, promoting and improving teamwork, innovation, collaboration, transformation and governance.

The team has worked hard to refresh and renew the Trust’s financial services. In just over three years, they have supported the delivery of £22 million in cost-savings, with £10.3 million saved last year.

Integrated Care System – everything you need to know

DBTH a partner in the Integrated Care System The South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System formally launched as an “ICS” in October 2018.

Having been working as a partnership for well over two years, first as a Sustainability and Transformation Partnership, then as a first wave Accountable Care System and now, as one of the leading ICS’ in the country.

Throughout this time, the goal has remained the same: For everyone in South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw to have the best possible start in life, with support to be healthy and live well, for longer. The ICS is NHS partners, such as DBTH, with support from other statutory bodies in the region, who have joined forces where it makes sense to do so and where it makes a positive difference to patients, staff and the public. The aim is to break down organisational barriers so that support, care and services can be wrapped around people as individuals and positively change lives.

DBTH Chief Executive, Richard Parker OBE, is a member of the Executive Steering Group, along with other Chief Executives from the organisations which form the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System, and officers from the ICS. Richard is seconded to the ICS role for one day a week, to help develop the ICS as a best practice model for others to follow. As part of the NHS Long Term Plan, every area of the country will eventually fall under an Integrated Care System, and South Yorkshire, as a first wave ICS, is at the forefront of this planning.

Hospital doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals are starting to agree new ways of working across some services, such as hyper acute stroke and lower gastrointestinal services. This includes the development of Hosted Networks, where teams from the different South Yorkshire NHS organisations develop and work much more in partnership.

Richard will be the lead CEO for the Gastroenterology Hosted Network meaning that DBTH will support similar services throughout the region - providing leadership, standardisation of working practices and encouraging further partnership work for the benefit of patients.

Healthcare providers in the area have also pulled together to procure clinical supplies and equipment, which means cost savings for everyone and standardised products which help to make care seamless for patients.

Richard said: “DBTH needs to be an active partner in the planning of the future of the local NHS, making sure we are working towards a system that delivers the best care for our patients and the best opportunities for our staff. Simply put, it’s about understanding how we can improve together and how we can protect and enhance our local health and care services for the benefit of our patients.”

Introducing the Allied Health Professions Council One of the Integrated Care System’s (ICS) priorities is to develop the healthcare workforce, attracting the best candidates to roles and recruiting and developing staff together. This includes Allied Health Professionals, or AHPs, who are trained individuals who offer services to support patient care, AHPs include physiotherapists, podiatrists, dietitians and speech and language therapists and a number of others.

Suzanne Bolam, Registered Physiotherapist and our Head of Therapies here at DBTH, has been working alongside the ICS to form an AHP council which acts as a link for AHPs in local organisations to the ICS. The council has a nominated member from all organisations within the ICS who employ AHPs as part of their care delivery – a central point to engage the expertise of a wide group of professions, ensuring their value and skills are best used in a changing health and care services. The council is in its early stages of development but is already making useful links with a range of workforce groups and working on developments in cancer services, primary care and other key clinical pathways.

The council was the first of its kind nationally and, due to its success, other Integrated Care Systems across the country are looking to set up their own AHP councils to facilitate partnership working in support services.

Suzanne has dedicated some of her time over the past six months to chairing the AHP council and helping to develop the AHP strategy.

Suzanne said: “The Council brings together a diverse group of AHPs, representing a broad range of roles within our partner organisations, as a forum to drive both our AHP ambitions and the ambitions of the wider ICS. The Council also has representatives from the ICS Citizens’ Panel and other workforce development groups who help shape our priorities and work plans.

We have met twice as a Council and I would like to thank everyone for their commitment to giving AHPs the opportunities to engage and start and add even further value to improving health and care.”

The AHP strategy which will soon be finalised has been developed with the ICS’s goals in mind, having a key focus workforce transformation. The council has been discussing a project, soon to be underway, in partnership with our local universities to explore how they can best support student education across the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw ICS. AHPs will now be represented in this forum so that we continue to attract students into AHP careers and help them develop their professional skills to work in our South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw services.

Linking very closely to the work being undertaken by the ICS looking at Advanced

Clinical Practice roles, the council have started to explore how, by developing new and extended AHP roles they can work in new ways to including how AHPs can support General Practitioners and their teams in primary care. They aim to develop more “first contact” roles and help patients to receive assessment and advice at the earliest opportunity.

At the latest Council meeting, members discussed the funding that has been received from Health Education England (HEE) to explore the role of AHPs in advanced practice roles relating to Musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions and also see how this can be applied in other health and care settings.

Suzanne said: “This is an exciting seven month opportunity where we will identify how, as a system, we can improve the service

patients receive and also the potential career opportunities for AHPs. I am excited to see how this, and future posts, develop.”

Doncaster and Bassetlaw doctors urge women to take up the offer of cervical screening Earlier this year, DBTH supported Cervical Cancer Prevention Week to help educate as many women as possible on how to reduce their chances of getting the disease, and the importance of attending screening appointments.

Nine women are diagnosed with cervical cancer every day, but 75% of cases could be avoided by attending your cervical screening appointments (smear tests).

Smear tests do not actually test for cervical cancer. They are a test for abnormal cells in the cervix, which may be a precursor to a cancer developing. If the abnormal cells are caught early they can be monitored and treated before they develop into cancer.

Despite cervical screening being a potentially life-saving and simple test, take-up for the appointments is at a 20-year low. In Doncaster, amongst women aged 25 to 49, only around 72% take up their invite for a smear test.

Dr David Crichton, GP and Chair of NHS Doncaster Clinical Commissioning Group, and Dr Eric Kelly, GP and Chair of NHS Bassetlaw Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Having a smear test is hugely important as early detection of any abnormalities within the cervix can lead to a better chance of

successful treatment.

“Women who don’t attend their appointments are the most vulnerable in developing more serious complications. Usually there are no symptoms with cervical cancer, so it is only by having a smear test that any abnormal cells within the cervix can be found before they develop into cancer.

“I’d like to take this opportunity to urge all ladies from South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw to take up their all-important cervical screening appointment, for five minutes out of your day – it could save your life.“ All women between the ages of 25 and 64 are eligible for a free cervical screening test every three to five years. If you are aged between 25 and 49 you will receive an appointment every three years, aged between 50 and 64 every five years and if you are above 65 you will

only be screened if you haven’t had a smear test since the age of 50 or have had recent abnormal tests.

Screening is usually carried out by the practice nurse at your GP clinic. Women who have missed their cervical screening appointment are encouraged to contact their local GP to book an appointment.

Park and Ride changes Following improvements to the Park and Ride service between Doncaster Racecourse and Doncaster Royal Infirmary, patients and visitors now pay a small fee of 50p to travel on the bus.

The Park and Ride service is provided by the Trust at a substantial cost, and due to the need to upgrade the buses this cost has recently increased. Since 1 November, the Trust has been working with a new Park and Ride bus provider and has seen positive improvements from the refreshed service, which is now operating newer and more modern buses.

Whilst parking will remain free for all users, regardless of how long you park, patients and visitors will be charged a small fee of 50p each way to travel on the bus to the Hospital, with a maximum charge of £2 return for family groups traveling in the same vehicle.

There will be no charge for those showing a Local Authority Bus Pass or a Disability Permit, in addition to an extension of the same concessions offered by the Trust for on-site parking for patients and their visitors in connection with renal, cancer, intensive care, critical care, palliative care, parents and guardians of children on neonatal and special

care baby units.

Staff presenting an official NHS ID badge will also travel free.

These changes will not apply to the shuttle bus services that run between Doncaster Royal Infirmary and Montagu Hospital, or

the service which connects Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals. Patients, visitors and staff who use these buses to travel between sites will continue to do so for free.

Any income generated by the Park and Ride will be used to fund the shuttle service.

DBTH champion Britain’s armed forces This year, DBTH became the latest NHS trust in Yorkshire and the Humber to publicly pledge its commitment to Britain’s armed forces.

The Trust’s Chief Executive Richard Parker OBE joined the President of the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Yorkshire and The Humber and Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of South Yorkshire, Andrew Coombe Esq., to sign the Armed Forces Covenant.

They were joined by Mr Andrew Bruce, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Trust and Army Reservist of over 20 years’ experience, including two consultant surgical tours of Camp Bastion in Afghanistan and Councillor Paul Wray, Armed Forces Champion at Doncaster Council and Lisa Swainston, Stronger Communities Manager.

Under the covenant, the Trust promises to support the military community and ensure that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.

More than 150 companies and organisations across the region have signed the covenant and Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals is the latest of 16 NHS trusts to do so.

Richard Parker said: “As an organisation, we are proud to sign the Armed Forces Covenant.

Veterans, throughout their service, make profound sacrifices for their country and we believe, as a Trust, this is just one way in which we can show our collective thanks and ensure a visit at DBTH is as comfortable as possible.”

Andrew Coombe said: “The Armed Forces’ Covenant is a wonderful way in which employers can express their commitment to the armed forces’ community. The covenant recognises the trust’s determination to acknowledge that those who serve or who

have served in the armed forces should be treated with fairness and respect. We look forward to working with the trust as it grows and develops its workforce in line with the covenant and delivers on the pledge it has made.”

Good Health: A pictorial history of Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals To celebrate 70 years of the NHS and 150 years of Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Garry Swann, the Trust Archivist, has produced a book which chronicles the organisation from its humble beginnings in the 19th century to the achievement of ‘Teaching Hospital’ status in 2017 The limited edition book is on sale now for £6.99 to raise money for the hospital charity.

Garry Swann, former Medical Photographer has used his extensive knowledge and access to the hospitals’ archives to curate over 100 pages filled with images and photographs from yesteryear. All of our hospitals at Bassetlaw, Doncaster, Mexborough and Retford have their own sections, with a short history detailing their growth and development.

Sharing How We Care

Making Mealtimes Matter Clinicians at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) are looking improve meal times for patients by introducing a series of improvements on wards and in departments.

Mealtimes Matter’ will also be welcomed onto the ward area at this time.

It is hoped that by making these simple changes that mealtimes will become much more structured and enjoyable for patients, while also creating a much more social environment. It’s also important that relatives and carers are welcomed onto wards to help their loved ones if they wish and as such all mealtimes will be displayed upon entry to our wards, clear for all visitors to see.

Ensuring patients eat well and have enough to drink is extremely important. Good nutrition and hydration helps patients to recover from illness and injury, usually resulting in a shorter length of time spent in hospital.

Despite the best efforts of clinicians, patient meal times can be interrupted due to a number of reasons. Wards and inpatient departments are often very busy places with competing priorities and treatments. To complement recently increased visiting times at the Trust, staff will be moving away from ‘Protected Mealtimes’ and are instead working towards ‘Making Mealtimes Matter’.

This means that non-essential activity will stop during mealtimes and activities will shift from clinical work to the meal service. All staff will be encouraged to help and nutrition-related patient care such as topping up drinks, creating social dining spaces and assisting patients who need help to eat. Carers and families who wish to support their loved ones to ‘Make

Moira Hardy, Director of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health Professionals, said: “When patients come to hospital, it can be all too easy to forget to treat the person rather

than just the symptoms. Mealtimes are incredibly important, and we believe that by ‘Making Mealtimes Matter’, we will improve nutrition, hydration and, ultimately, improve the experience for those staying with us, meaning that many patients will be able to recover sooner.

“At home, we rarely eat lying down, in bed and alone. Meals are social occasions, shared with family members, while dressed and sat at a dining area. This is what we want to achieve at the hospital – to create a structured environment, where patients are encouraged to get up and out of bed, share their preferences and enjoy their breakfast, lunch and evening meal.

This recent innovation is just one of many example of a drive towards what is known as ‘person centred care’ at the Trust. In late 2018, DBTH significantly increased its visiting hours, while further projects encourage patients to get up and dressed when they are hospital to end ‘PJ Paraylsis’, an initiative to prevent deterioration of muscle strength due to bed rest.

In 2017/18, DBTH cared for almost 100,000 patients within wards and services.

Changing our visiting times Our adult inpatient wards at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals have increased their visiting hours from 11am to 8pm every day, with some of them offering access at all times.

This development is the result of a recent survey, conducted both in-person and via social media, where patients and the public voted enthusiastically in favour of increasing visiting times. In all, over 1,100 local people took part in the week-long engagement, with 53% of those asked opting for a change from current access times to an extended format running from 8am to 8pm in some areas, and 11am to 8pm in others.

This is a change which has also been longrequested by patients, who often want family, friends or carers with them when they are facing a prolonged stay in hospital, and will mean the following visiting times will be implemented: • Gastroenterology and respiratory wards will adopt visiting hours from 8am to 8pm • Elderly care wards and paediatrics will retain open access at any hour for visitors • All other wards (except Maternity and the Department of Critical Care) will adopt visiting hours from 11am to 8pm.

By making it easier for visitors to be with their loved ones, hospital staff anticipate that there will be an increase in the comfort, dignity

and independence experienced by patients throughout their stay.

Agreeing with increasing visiting times one survey participant said: “Visitors should be able to support their loved ones when they are at their most vulnerable. Just ask the family – they will tell you what patients want”, while another stated: “I need to know what to expect when my relative is home and want to be more involved when they are here [at hospital].”

For a number of years, certain wards within the Trust have supported open-access at all times for carers of patients with dementia, as part of ‘John’s Campaign.’ The initiative is all about welcoming carers at all times to support patients living with dementia or experiencing delirium. John’s Campaign encourages ward staff to regard friends, relatives and carers as part of the team, helping them to gain a better understanding of a patients’ life, which in turn enables clinicians to provide holistic and bespoke care at all times.

By extending visiting times, clinicians at the Trust are hoping to replicate this success on all inpatient wards at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, Bassetlaw Hospital and Montagu Hospital.

Patients concerned about extended access times will be encouraged to complete a ‘This is Me’ document, which guides staff to an individual’s likes, dislikes and preferences for when they are visited.

By increasing access, many believed they would be able to be more actively involved, supporting staff and empowering patients in recovery or making them more comfortable during a prolonged stay.

“As an organisation it’s important we always look to engage, listen and learn from the experiences of those within our care as well as those indirectly affected – this is just one more example of putting this into positive action.

We look forward to welcoming our patient’s friends, family and loved ones at a time which better suits their wishes.

Local Communities supporting DBTH Charity

Work begins on £4.9 million scanning facility at Doncaster Royal Infirmary A project to build a new Computed Tomography (CT) scanner suite at Doncaster Royal Infirmary (DRI) has begun, as representatives from Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH), Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust (DCDT) and Dame Rosie Winterton MP officiated at the ceremonial groundbreaking event.

This development is a result of the acute hospitals receiving £4.9 million from the Department of Health and Social Care, which was awarded to thanks to a bid put forward by the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System (of which DBTH is a key member), to build the brand new facility at DRI, with additional support from DCDT to purchase an additional CT scanner.

CT scanners use X-rays to create detailed images of inside the body. The scans are carried out by specially-trained operators called radiographers and are crucial for diagnosis, guiding further tests or treatments, and are instrumental in diagnosing and monitoring conditions such as cancer.

Mr Sewa Singh, Medical Director at DBTH, said: “We are delighted to have received the funding to enable us to build this brand new, and stateof-the-art, suite at Doncaster Royal Infirmary. In the past five years, we have seen local demand for our current CT machine increase by 70%, with almost 25,000 scans undertaken in the last

financial year. Once complete, the new facility will house two CT scanners, linked by a common control room, increasing the number of scans we can undertake to 36,000 a year, removing the need for a mobile CT scanner which is currently in use.”

“We believe that this will substantially benefit patients to get the right diagnosis, at the right time and with the best means available to the NHS. On behalf of DBTH, I want to extend our collective thanks to everyone at Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust and particularly to Jeannette Fish MBE, who set up the charity and was a driving force behind much of their fundraising before sadly passing away last year. The charity has been a firm friend of DBTH for almost 50 years and we have counted upon their support for many decades, and I hope we will continue to do so for many years to come.”

Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust has supported DBTH since the 1970s, raising more than £10 million. Starting in 1972 by donating a ‘bronchoscope’, the charity has since purchased more than 80 pieces of specialist medical equipment for DRI. Their latest project has been steadfastly fundraising for the new CT scanner at DRI, raising £500,000 to purchase the muchneeded device. The charity is unique in that it has no paid fundraisers, all members are volunteers

and is dependent on the donations and support of local residents, businesses and organisations.

Dame Rosie Winterton, MP for Doncaster Central, said: “As Patron of Doncaster Cancer Detection Trust, it is an honour to celebrate all the hard work and fundraising that they do. The benefit the new CT suite and scanner will have for patients is tremendous with an increased capacity for CT scans of an estimated 51%. This will go a long way in diagnosing cancer, as well as its use in urgent and emergency patients.”

Increasing CT capacity with this investment and development at Doncaster Royal Infirmary is also key to fulfilling the Trust’s Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) commitments. Work which took place last year across all partners within the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Integrated Care System (ICS) concluded that the number of HASU in the region should reduce from five to three, with DBTH maintaining and expanding its service. This change will increase the number of stroke patients seen within Doncaster meaning increased CT capacity is paramount in ensuring patients receive effective thrombolysis treatment.

The project to build the new CT suite began Friday 15 February and is being undertaken by Vinci Construction. The building works will take around 54 weeks to complete and, it is hoped, the facility will open in March 2020.

Knitting for our neonates Over the past few months we have appealed for knitters across the country to help us knit some essential items for our youngest patients here at DBTH and we received an incredible response.

We have received countless packages from places as far as Canada, all containing hand knitted hats, protective sleeves and ‘bonding hearts’ which all help with the care of our new born babies.

The traffic light hats are worn by new-born babies in our maternity and neonatal units.

The knitted hats are colour coded in red, yellow and green to signal what level of care is needed for each infant at a glance. These hats are used for the first 24 hours of a baby’s life.

The traffic light hats project has been set up to reduce the number of babies being admitted to the Neonatal Unit with low temperatures.

As well as the hats, the traffic light project has incorporated an educational programme for midwives, helping them to identify babies who may be at risk of low temperatures, such as those born in theatres where it’s a bit cooler.

The project feeds into a national programme called MATNEO which aims to reduce these admissions across the country.

Red hats signify that the baby’s temperature

is cold, amber are cool and green are warmer babies. The hats help midwives identify the need for more frequent observations in the

initial post-natal period.

Cannula mittens help stop our tiny tots from pulling out intravenous equipment. The mittens cover over cannulas and prevent babies from disturbing them or pulling them out.

Bonding hearts help babies to know their mother’s smell and help mothers to produce breastmilk, as the smell of their baby helps stimulate the hormones that encourage this.

The idea is simple, mum wears one heart next to her skin and the other is placed next to the baby to transfer the smell, then they are swapped regularly.

As a bonus, all of the items look adorable and they go home with families as a keepsake.

We have been overwhelmed by the response from the community and now have enough hats to last us for years to come. The response was so great that we have actually run out of space to store the knitted items so we are asking our knitting army to pause for now but not to hang up their needles as we’re sure to have another project soon!

We would like to thank the army of knitters that have contributed to the cause so far.

History Matters

A lifetime of service at DRI Joan Holdsworth, who spent almost the whole of her working life as a nurse at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, passed away on 22nd December 2018, aged 101.

Born at Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire, in 1917, Joan began her career at the age of 17 at The Corporation Hospital, Grimsby, where she qualified as a State Registered Fever Nurse (RFN). Having suffered a bout of diphtheria in 1937, she decided to enrol at Doncaster Royal Infirmary’s Nurse Training School in May 1940, a few months after the Second World War began. She passed the Final State Registration (SRN) examination in April 1943 and was initially appointed as a holiday staff nurse at an annual salary of £60 (later, £100). In December 1944 she became Junior Ward Sister on Unit 1 (first floor of what is now the West Ward Block). Her salary rose to £130 per annum.

There she remained for the remainder of her career, a true nurse of the ‘old school’, with strict professional standards and unconditional devotion to her patients. Joan was greatly respected by the many nurses who passed through her hands during their training and after their state qualification.

As our pictures show, she took part in many hospital activities, including appearing in such events as revues organised for staff (she is fourth from the left in the dancing troupe), and church parades (here she is leading (sixth from right) a group of nurses into St. George’s Parish Church for a special service).

1944 when an appeal was made in local newspapers for bananas to supplement the diet of 17-months-old coeliac patient Jean Walmsley. Several local people donated the fruit, in wartime not easy to come by, and Joan is seen here offering a banana to the child. The banana is clearly of some age!

Joan retired from her post as Senior Nursing Officer on Unit 1 in 1972. Afterwards, she kept in touch with many of her former colleagues and, until her health prevented it, was a staunch and much-loved attendee at the annual Nurses’ Reunion meetings (final picture). Though she never married, Joan was always interested to hear about her nephews and niece and their families. She also treated herself to a small motor car, though apparently was not noted for her driving skills. She loved bridge, and enjoyed bridge holidays both in the UK and abroad. As she reached her 90s, her memory began to fail and she moved from her beloved bungalow in Bessacarr to live in care homes, firstly in Bawtry Road, and finally in Tickhill, where she died.

When Joan joined DRI, the hospital was but ten years old and still under local government ownership, albeit operating in wartime conditions. She saw the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948, and witnessed the hospital’s growth into one of the country’s first district general hospitals.

Her life was long and well-lived.
