Welcome to this week's Big Canoe Living with Our Trees!

Trees, Shrubs, and flowers give us beauty, tranquility, and a true identity with nature. Woodlands affect our lives through the days and seasons, ranging from varying degrees of subtlety to almost total domination.

They wall out the harshness while retaining the natural beauty of our society. Even more, plants nostalgically carry us into the past, when man lived in much closer contact with the land.

We are slowly making our way out of winter, and with only 4 weeks to go until Daylight Savings Time, our thoughts turn to spring. For many of us, that means beginning our 2024 garden, vista pruning for a view, and creating home improvement plans. And that always starts with a trip to our Governing Documents on the website for a quick review of the Architectural & Environmental Controls Standards of Big Canoe.

As my team began our research for this week's edition, we found an absolute treasure in the archives from 1977. A printed guide from the Architectural & Environmental Controls Committee (AECC) composed by property owners and still going strong 46 years later. The guide starts with the beautiful paragraph above. It has been sitting on my desk all week as we admire the beautiful, retroaesthetic of the cover and the title of Big Canoe's Environmental Ethic, "Take Nothing But Pictures Leave Nothing But Footprints." written long ago by the late Dr. Robert Platt, once Big Canoe's resident Ecologist. Like you, the Grounds and Landscape Team is preparing for Spring 2024!

In partnership with our property owners, ecologists, and committees, the Grounds and Landscaping team is hard at work in all seasons. During the winter, our concentration is on the removal (digging) of invasive species within common areas. The invasives we concentrate on are evergreen (Elaeagnus, mahonia, Chinese privet, and pine), so they are easily seen this time of year. They can be found along roadsides, on the golf course grounds, and along the woodline in the common areas. Our strategic plan for the department includes the removal of a minimum of 400 plants for the year. Jess Riddle (ecologist) prepared a Google map of the GPS locations of most of the invasives that guide this work. As we remove one in the field, we mark it as removed on the map. So far, we have removed almost 2/3 of that number for the year. Kudzu, mimosa, and princess trees are our main targets during summer.

As our property owners are preparing for your plans, Grounds and Landscaping are, too. Plant installations are upcoming for the Main Gate and North Gate this spring.

We will be concentrating on specific areas to make the most impact. According to our architectural and Environmental designs, we will be placing boulders, transplanting existing plant material, adding native plant material, redefining bed lines, and reducing turf areas to improve flow and aesthetics. Over time, oaks, black gum, redbud, and serviceberry trees are planned for those areas. These species are chosen from our approved plant list, which is available on our website Approved Plant List.

As we leave all the winter worries behind and are thankful that we did not have any severe weather to create havoc, you may start focusing on Spring renewal and ways to bring new life to your own little piece of paradise. The Architectural and Environmental Control Department has the pleasure of working with Property Owners to protect Dr. Platt’s environmental ethic. I am Big Canoe’s own version of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, and I speak for the trees (as well as the rest of our natural beauty).

As the leaves start to pop out on the trees and your view closes in you may consider Vista Pruning to get that winter view back. The process for Vista Pruning is outlined in our Architectural and Environmental Control Standards HERE. If you notice some of your trees have not leafed back out and you suspect they are dead or there are trees you are concerned about contact the Architectural Control Department at 706-268-3394 to have the proper documentation prepared.

If all your trees are looking good and you decide you want to work on the house instead, please remember that all exterior changes require POA approval. To get approval for repainting your home submit a sample board with your requested colors to the AECD office located behind the trash facility. A list of approved colors can be found HERE. (appendices page 19) There are times when our mountain wind gusts may cause trees to land on your roof. If possible cover the damaged area with a tarp and contact your insurance company. If you discover you need to re-roof the list of approvable roofing materials can be found HERE. (page 18 AEC Standards) Be mindful that any ‘patchwork’ must match existing roofing.

This could include anything from adding a new deck, enclosing an existing deck, or adding a whole room to your house. The requirements for a remodel submittal are outlined HERE.
