It is that time of year Big Canoe comes alive with our beautiful fall colors, and we all set our clocks back an hour and begin our busy holiday seasons. October flew by, and this week, we are sharing some important dates and activities happening in the first half of November.

The 2024 Amenity Satisfaction Survey is open until Nov. 17. Please take a few minutes to join over 1,000 of your neighbors to let us know how we can serve you better.

At the end of next week, ballots for the Board of Directors election will be mailed. On bigcanoepoa.org, you will find links to the candidates ' bios, fireside chats, and the Smoke Signals Q&A session. Once you receive your ballot, please fill it out and mail it back quickly. We don't want any ballots delayed in the mail! Please fill in and mail all the ballots you receive, as you will receive one for each of the properties you own in Big Canoe.

As I have said many times, we don't make widgets at Big Canoe. We rely on over 200 talented employees to keep us safe, teach us pickleball, clean up after storms, prepare and serve our delicious meals...the list is endless! Our community thanks the POA staff each year through generous donations to the annual holiday fund. When you receive your annual Holiday Fund letter, I thank you for doing what you can to make the Holidays brighter for our employees and their families.

Our best to you,

Adrift With Lipkowitz

Lake Petit is stocke , pounds of rainbow trout per year. 2,000 pounds per month when the ambient water temperature is below 65 degrees. This is to keep the delta difference between the lake temperature and truck tank delivery temperature to a minimum to avoid fish kill. They are supplied by Tellico Trout Farm located just outside of Franklin, North Carolina.

In 2018, Bramlet Trout Farm out of Suches, Georgia was the supplier of trout at a cost of $4.25 per pound and were going to increase the cost to $5.00 per pound. It was then, Big Canoe’s Marina looked elsewhere and found Tellico Trout Farm which would deliver at $2.60 per pound. It was an easy financial decision to make - switch trout suppliers. Since then, due to escalating costs of production and delivery, the cost per pound delivered to Lake Petit is $3.45 per pound for an annual cost of $55,200. So, fishing permits and fishing memberships help offset this cost.

Fishing Membership

Now, if you fish on a daily basis, the fishing permit is $12.00 per day which allows you to catch a limit of 4 trout. In comparison, a monthly single membership is $13.00. So, if you fish more than once per month on average, a single annual fishing membership is what you want to use to bait your hook! As a side note, a Georgia fishing license is not required since the lakes of Big Canoe are privately owned.

If you decide you want a single or family fishing membership, the Marina Shack currently has a nifty easy to use KIOSK iPad which with a few strokes of the keypad, you can have a fishing membership and fish the same day. Just see a Marina Staff member to help you sign up. You can also go to your Big Canoe POA website and click on “MEMBERSHIP” to sign up there.

How to Cook Rainbow Trout

Here is my favorite way of serving rainbow trout. Fillet the trout – if you don’t know how, try a YouTube Video. Heat a covered grill to 400 degrees. Prepare ahead of time sautéed slivered almonds in butter cooked to a light golden brown. Use a piece of aluminum foil and spry it with Pam or wipe it with vegetable oil. Place the fillets skin side down and sprinkle lightly with paprika power. Place on the grill and cook until the fish fillet becomes flakey. Spread lightly the sautéed slivered almonds over the trout followed by a squeeze of fresh lemon and serve.

Golden Trout, "Gold Digger," was caught by Sam Weems on October 20, which entitles him to a 2 hour complimentary pontoon reservation.

TO THE ENTIRE BIG CANOE COMMUNITY:

On behalf of the Big Canoe Department of Public Safety and the Big Canoe Volunteer Fire Department (BCVFD), we wanted to thank you for your incredible generosity and financial support of the Hurricane Helene relief efforts

Big Canoe held its collective breath on September 26 & 27 and everyone was expecting a direct hit from Helene However, during the early morning hours of September 27 Helene started to track farther east, and we were spared. Unfortunately, our good fortune was not shared by other communities in east Georgia, the upstate of South Carolina and the mountains of east Tennessee and western North Carolina.

As news of the devastation in those areas surfaced, several BCVFD Volunteer Firefighters initiated discussions on relief efforts for the impacted communities in western North Carolina. Once the ball was rolling early in the week of September 30 the unparalleled generosity of the Big Canoe Community was on full display and virtually unstoppable

In less than one-week Big Canoe residents responded and donated incredible volumes of:

Water, Juices & Hydration Drinks

Food, Food & more Food

Clothing, Blankets & Tarps

Chainsaws & Fuel

Generators, Camping Stoves, Heaters & Fuel

Flashlights, Lanterns & Batteries

Baby Food, Formula & Diapers

Pet Food & Pet Supplies

Personal Hygiene Products, First Aid

Supplies & OTC Medications

Cash

The donated materials were transported to Mitchell County, NC on Monday October 7. The Chief of the Buladean Fire Department and many residents were deeply moved at the level of support. This may become an on-going effort, as there are long-term needs. Again, please accept our sincere gratitude for your support of this important relief effort. WELL DONE !!!

Sincerely,

Kenneth Bechely
