Join the Big Canoe Volunteer Fire Department!
The Big Canoe Department of Public Safety is a multidisciplinary department that oversees all aspects of emergency preparedness, response, and access control The Department consists of POA employees and volunteers from within the community Whenever there is a need for public safety members to respond, whether an emergency or large-scale event requiring additional public safety manpower, the members of the Big Canoe Volunteer Fire Department respond with the POA staff to assist.
The Big Canoe Volunteer Fire Department (BCVFD) is a non-profit organization with a crucial mission: to assist the career members of the POA staff by utilizing community members in various volunteer roles Members of the BCVFD serve the community in many different ways, from fully certified firefighters to our auxiliary members who assist with events and traffic direction. By joining the BCVFD, you'll be part of a team that plays a vital role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community.
Community residents who volunteer as members of the BCVFD begin their journey by attending weekly training sessions, meeting other members, and getting an orientation on department operations All volunteers are provided a pathway to reach their chosen level of participation BCVFD and the career firefighters provide all training on-site in most cases, making training easily obtainable The highest level of training requires several months of classes for a total of around 95 hours to equip members with the knowledge and training to go into buildings that are on fire. This is the most physically demanding certification, and the department currently needs it most The next level of training is scene support This level of training allows volunteers to respond to emergencies and assist with the operations but only exteriorly and safely away from the hazard zone The final level of participation is our auxiliary program These members' primary functions are to assist with large events, public safety demonstrations/fundraiser activities. These members assist with traffic direction during our larger community events or when roadways must be closed for repair or accidents.
The BCVFD is currently looking for interested residents who may wish to join the volunteer team By joining, you'll not only be giving back to the community and your neighbors, but you'll also become part of a close-knit team All interested residents are encouraged to join up and become part of our public safety team!

NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS
With the excitement of summer winding down, fall brings the promise of cooler weather and a slate of new health-related events from the Big Canoe Wellness Collaborative. From classes to educational panels, from blood drives to vaccine clinics, neighbors don’t even have to venture outside the gates to take advantage of the plethora of Wellness Collaborative fall events.
Jasper Drugs will be at the Big Canoe Chapel on September 26, October 15 and November 12, to offer vaccine clinics to Big Canoe residents. Vaccines offered will be flu, RSV, Pneumonia, and Shingles. See the Wellness Collaborative website for complete details on which vaccines will be offered on each date at bcwell org
The CDC says that “vaccines are the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from preventable disease.” In addition to preventing diseases, vaccines can also “protect against the dangerous complications or consequences ” that some diseases can bring Vaccines can protect you, as well as help you avoid spreading preventable diseases to others. Ask your doctor if the offered vaccines are right for you.
Preregistration is required for RSV and Shingles vaccines and highly encouraged for flu and pneumonia vaccines so that insurance coverage can be verified and Jasper Drugs can be prepared to administer the appropriate vaccines.
