1. Stay Hydrated: Bring plenty of water and drinks for everyone in your party attending any of the events for the duration of the event you are attending. At the time of this writing, Saturday, July 6, temperatures are forecast for the high 80s at 4 pm

2. B.Y.O.B: The POA will not sell soft drinks or adult beverages at the events, and our vendor's supplies of drinks may be limited. Please feel comfortable with BYOB.

3. Familiarize Yourself with Road Closures: Please look at the traffic plans included in this edition of Big Canoe Living and familiarize yourself with the road closures and timing

4. Not Attending: Avoid the areas where the Color Run/Walk on July 4 and the Playfield Park events are happening on July 6.

5. Familiarize Yourself with Parking: Only park in a parking space. Do not pull off on the side of the road, park, and walk, or create a parking space anywhere within Big Canoe Do not place items in a parking spot to save them, as those items will be removed Note: there are limited handicap parking spaces in the three-tier parking lot.

6. Do Not Bring Tents: Wear protective sunwear and hats. Umbrellas must be taken down during the concert, and fireworks show to prevent obstructions blocking the view of other guests

7. Do Not Bring Fireworks, including Sparklers: These items are prohibited everywhere and at all times within Big Canoe.

8. Know Your Children's Location at All Times: Unfortunately, we announce the location of lost children each year The playfield will be crowded, so please watch for your little ones

9. POA Sales are Cashless: On July 6, we welcome lot and credit cards for POA items on the playfield. Our vendors may accept cash, but card use is recommended.

Greetings from the Wellness Collaborative!

Staying on top of our health and knowing our risks are vital to longevity.

The Wellness Collaborative is happy to announce that on Wednesday, August 14, we will partner with Northside Hospital Heart Institute to offer free cardiovascular screenings at the Big Canoe Chapel from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm. The screenings can provide you with valuable information regarding your current health status and let you know about issues you may be unaware of.

Recommended for people aged 50 and above, the screenings include a number of helpful and informative tests, including a finger stick cholesterol and glucose screen, a blood pressure screen, a carotid ultrasound screen, which is a quick scan of one’s carotid arteries to depict blood flow in the area, an ankle/brachial index screen, which compares blood pressure in the arms and legs to assess blood flow in the areas, a coronary risk assessment, which includes counseling and education related to the screen results, along with tobacco/vaping cessation education. Of particular interest may be the carotid ultrasound screen, which may reveal blood clots or plaque build-up on the artery walls, which, over time, can restrict and block blood flow to your brain, face, and neck. The ultrasound isn’t generally offered in free screenings, so this is a great opportunity to have these important arteries checked.

The screenings are non-invasive and have been described as “comfortable.” Northside Hospital’s Heart Institute points out that heart disease and stroke are both in the top five causes of death in the United States, and no matter your gender, ethnicity, or age, you may be at risk. Learning your personal risk can give you peace of mind and even save your life. People with any of the following in their personal histories should strongly consider taking advantage of this free screening: abnormal cholesterol, glucose and/or blood pressure issues, personal history of tobacco/vaping usage, and/or family history of heart disease or stroke.

The screenings are also beneficial for people that have not had their cholesterol, glucose or blood pressure checked in the past year. Registration for the Cardiovascular Screening is required. Please scan the QR code on the promotional flier in this magazine or posted in public Big Canoe spaces, such as the mail facility, to be directed to the registration portal. The flier can also be found on the Wellness Collaborative website at www.bcwell.org. The event can only accommodate 80 participants, so register early. Taking ownership of your personal risk starts with a screening. Being informed can make all the difference.

See you there!
