Greetings from the Trails Committee!

Enjoying Big Canoe Hiking and Biking Trails

With spring and summer here, it’s a perfect time to explore the more than 25 miles of trails within Big Canoe. Hiking is a fantastic way to connect with nature, challenge yourself, and enjoy the outdoors. Preparation goes a long way in making your hike safe and fun. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just starting out, here are some tips to help you prepare for your next adventure.

Choose the Right Trail

Picking a trail that matches your fitness level and experience is essential. Here’s what to consider:

Distance: If you’re new to hiking, start with shorter trails.

Elevation Gain: Steeper trails require more stamina.

Terrain: Check if the trail is rocky or has other challenging features.

Weather: Always check the forecast and be prepared for changes.

Locations: Want a trail that leads to waterfalls, historic cabins, or a water wheel? Our maps show parking spots and picnic areas to plan your hike and lunch breaks. Trail brochures are available at all trailheads, or you can choose your trail online here.

Things to Know

Hydration: Bring plenty of water, especially on hot days.

Bug Spray: A must-have and apply pre-hike.

Hiking Poles/Walking Stick: Helpful for steeper trails.

Plan Your Route: Know the trail’s length, elevation changes, and difficulty.

Time Management: Estimate how long the hike will take and plan accordingly.

Inform Others: Let someone know your plans and expected return time.

Trail Etiquette: Follow Leave No Trace principles. Take only photos and leave only footprints. Please don’t pick flowers, take plants, or build cairns in streams.

Wildlife Awareness: Learn about the local wildlife and how to react to encounters. In Big Canoe, this mostly means bears and snakes.

Stay on the Trail: Avoid getting lost or damaging the environment.

Biking: Permitted on paved and gravel trails but not on dirt ones.

Enjoy the Journey. Remember, hiking isn’t just about reaching your destination. Enjoy the beauty and serenity of nature along the way. Proper preparation can ensure a safer, more enjoyable hiking experience. Learn from each hike and keep refining your approach.

During the summer swim season at Wildcat, the lifeguard calls a “Safety Break”, or “Adult Swim”, at 45 minutes after the hour. Why, you may ask? There are several reasons.

1.Swimmers need a break. All swimmers, but especially kids need reminding of when to rest so their stomachs don’t get too upset from ingestion of water and from vigorous activity. Too much chlorinated water in the bloodstream can cause “hyponatremia”. The body protects itself from rapid water intake, or hyponatremia, by vomiting. A break is also to remind kids to go to the restroom. This can prevents accidents in the water.

2.Secondly, especially at the beginning of the summer, kids and adult’s feet are tender and can be rubbed raw from too much contact with the plaster finish on the pool. The longer a person is in the water, the softer the toes and feet become, thus making the skin more easily scraped.

3.Last but not least the lifeguards may have duties to perform, and often times these are accomplished during the “Safety Break”. Those duties include testing the water, checking the filtration systems, completing paperwork, etc… The lifeguard may also take this break to cool off, get out of the sun, use the restroom or eat something.

As you can see, it’s a good idea for everyone to take a break from the water!

Greetings from the Racquet Club!

It's finally summer and all things tennis, pickleball & bocce are in full swing at the Racquet Club! Here are a few reminders and updates to help maximize the fun on the courts.

Bocce:

Monday Night Bocce is moving to 6:00 PM start time o summer heat. This is a no-registration required, the e members- join us!

Bocce Babes will move their start time to 9:00 AM b join the babes on the courts each Thursday morning welcome & registration is not required.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR: Fall Bocce League registration 1st. The fall league will start on September 9th and r Not sure how to play bocce and want to learn? Come t during Monday night Bocce on July 22nd, July 29th, August 5th or August 12th.

Tennis:

Please remember to turn off the lights and close the doors at the indoor courts. Leaving the two emergency doors open causes wildlife to wander in at night and take up residence.

The 24-hour cancellation policy is still in effect. If you are unable to cancel online, you can call or email the pro shop and we are happy to take care of it for you!

Please make tennis court changes, indoor to outdoor prior to 4:00 PM when the shop closes. We plan grooming around those changes and changes without our knowledge result in courts not being ready for morning play. So that all members playing on the clay courts enjoy a fresh court, we ask that you sweep your court after you play. With court times booked back to back, the Racquet Club staff is unable to groom between all matches.

Big Canoe Living   |   9

Similar to golf, we will start using an APP to communicate regarding tennis clinics and lessons with Kip, Wendy & Chris. If you would like to receive notifications and communications, please download the Heja APP and join our team.

Pickleball:

With temperatures on the rise, we will move Pickleball Open Play from 10:00 AM to a 9:00 AM start time. We will begin 9:00- 11:00 AM open play this Wednesday, June 12th.

The 24-hour cancellation policy is still in effect. If you are unable to cancel online, you can call or email the pro shop and we are happy to take care of it for you!

New Pickleball Clinics and pricing specials are available this week- all the details and links are in this issue of Big Canoe Living!

I look forward to seeing you all on the courts!
