Greetings from Big Canoe! It's hard to believe summer is already beginning to wind down. While the days may be getting shorter, there is still plenty of time to enjoy everything Big Canoe has to offer. Whether you're spending time at the Beach Club, relaxing by the Wildcat Pool, or simply enjoying the beauty of the mountains, we hope you'll make the most of these final weeks of summer. While you're out and about, be sure to stop by the Clubhouse and try our new lunch menu. It's the perfect opportunity to gather with friends, enjoy a delicious meal, and take in one of the community's favorite views. Before the season comes to a close, we hope you'll join us for our Big Canoe Travel Series trip to see the Atlanta Braves take on the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday, September 10. Tickets are still available, but they're going quickly, so be sure to reserve yours while you still can. It's always a great opportunity to spend a day with neighbors while cheering on the Braves. This year's Board of Directors election is just around the corner. We encourage you to take a few moments to get to know each candidate by reading their profiles before casting your vote. Your participation helps shape the future of our community. Thank you for being part of what makes Big Canoe such a special community. We hope you enjoy this issue of Big Canoe Living, and we look forward to seeing you around the community.
ELECTION
Dear Property Owners, The Election Committee is excited to announce the candidates who have stepped forward to run for the POA Board during the upcoming election. The candidates are: Charlie Armstrong Jonathan Foulkes Joan Puls-Kirchner These candidates will be running to replace two current Board Members who will be retiring at the conclusion of this year’s Town Hall event in December: Sandy Pullara and Craig Price. Because there are only three candidates, no primary election will be held in accordance with the by-laws. Details about the general election to be held in the fall will be provided before ballots are mailed to Property Owners. There are two Election Committee-sponsored opportunities for Property Owners to engage with the candidates: “Ask Candidates a Question:” Get answers to your questions for the candidates. Simply click on this LINK to enter your question into a form. The Election Committee will select questions from the submissions to pose to the candidates. The candidates’ responses will be published in future Big Canoe Living issues. (Note: Preference will be given to questions that are for all candidates and relevant to most Property Owners.) “Meet your Board Candidates:” This event is scheduled for the afternoon of November 7 in the Overlook Room. During this event, you will have the opportunity to meet with all the candidates and ask questions directly. Details will be provided closer to the day of the event. Our POA Board plays a critical role in keeping our Big Canoe Community a great place to live. The Election Committee encourages all Property Owners to learn about all the candidates and to vote! POA Board of Directors Candidate Preserve what makes Big Canoe special. Prepare it for what comes next. Big Canoe is a remarkable community, defined by natural beauty, strong property values, and the people who call it home. As our community evolves, our responsibility is clear: preserve the mountain environment and character that make Big Canoe unique while investing wisely in infrastructure before it becomes a crisis and governing with a disciplined long-term plan. Every decision should reflect one guiding principle: serve the greatest number of property owners through fiscal responsibility, thoughtful planning, and transparent leadership. I am running for the POA Board because preserving Big Canoe’s future requires thoughtful leadership, sound stewardship, and a willingness to listen before acting. For most of my career, every house I lived in was simply where I stayed until the next opportunity. Big Canoe is different. The first time I crossed the covered bridge, I knew I was home. What drew me here — a close-knit community, protected mountain landscapes, exceptional amenities — is what I hope we never lose. Close to 3,000 homes, 90 miles of roads, and over 8,000 acres of protected land require thoughtful planning, sound financial stewardship, and disciplined leadership — the kind of challenge I have spent my career solving. My professional career has centered on helping organizations preserve what makes them successful while adapting their infrastructure and operations to meet changing needs.

POA Board of Directors Candidate My wife, Liz, and I have owned property in Big Canoe for 32 years and have called it home full-time since 1998. We chose it as our forever home, built here in 1999, and have reinvested in it steadily ever since, because you care for a place you never plan to leave. I want to help protect what makes Big Canoe special while preparing it for what lies ahead. I'm running for the POA Board because the next few years will ask Big Canoe for two things at once: the institutional memory to protect what generations of residents have built, and the forward-looking judgment to prepare for a rapidly changing world. Big Canoe has long been well served by neighbors who gave their time, experience, and wisdom to guide the community, and I hope to continue that tradition. My professional life was spent in technology, systems design, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving. Many neighbors also know me from years of helping hundreds of households here improve their internet service, something I still do today. That work reflects how I approach challenges: understand the real problem, study the options, and find practical solutions that improve daily life. As a Board member, my priorities would be: Well-informed decision-making. Good governance takes curiosity, discipline, and humility. Major decisions should rest on facts, history, careful analysis, and a clear view of long-term consequences.

POA Board of Directors Candidate Big Canoe is a remarkable community where people care deeply about it. I am running for the POA Board because I want to help preserve what makes this place so special while preparing thoughtfully for the future. Throughout my career and volunteer service, I've learned that the best decisions come from listening, asking thoughtful questions and bringing people together around common goals. Effective leadership isn't about having all the answers; it's about encouraging collaboration, respecting different perspectives, and making informed decisions that serve the entire community. My professional career has provided a broad range of leadership experiences that I believe are directly relevant to serving on the POA Board. Hospitality: I served in hotel management and food and beverage operations. Managing facilities, employees, guest services, and daily operations taught me that exceptional communities are built by anticipating needs, maintaining high standards, and creating positive experiences for the people they serve. Business Operations: I helped lead family business operations across ten retail locations, developing strategic plans, managing employees, overseeing budgets, and adapting quickly to changing market conditions. That experience taught me how to evaluate priorities, make informed decisions, and remain accountable for results.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 2ND AT 3 PM
Big Canoe Lodge | 3:00pm - 6:00pm A century may seem distant, but for those who have reached their 70s, it can feel surprisingly close. On Sunday, August 2nd, the North GA Mountains History Center will host a free celebration of this milestone at The Big Canoe Lodge from 3–6 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend, including non-owners and guests in Big Canoe. The event will feature historical documents and images showing Big Canoe before its development, during its development, and in its early years in the 1970s. Come and see how Big Canoe has changed over the years. Jan Murphy, Big Canoe’s historian, has surprises planned for attendees. Curious what Lake Sconti looked like in the late 1960s—or before Colonel Sam Tate built it in 1925? On August 2 nd at 6:30 a.m., water flowed over the dam for the first time, confirming the lake was full. These highlights and more will be on display for guests to enjoy. Pat Hall, a longtime Big Canoe owner and the only descendant of one of the area’s earliest settler families, the Cowarts, will attend along with some of her Cowart relatives. This informal, casual event will not include a formal presentation. NGMHC hopes that you will join us at this centennial celebration. Be sure to tell your neighbors about this event!
