ThankyoufromPublicSafety, PublicWorks,andtheCommsTeam!

Wow, winter of 2025 has proven to be a busy one so far, and we wanted to send a note of gratitude to all our property owners for your patience and kind words about our staff and response during the recent snow and ice storm.

The Big Canoe operations team prepares for these events all year round, every year and that prep includes all departments. From training to equipment to deployment and clean up, we stand ready to support you and keep you informed. When we receive notice from the National Weather Service and County EMA Leaders of an impending storm, a detailed countdown of pre planned actions begins on our part and is led by Chief Ricky Jordan.

You play a vital role in Big Canoe's safety response by staying weather aware, creating a personal safety plan for you and your family, following our official communication's channels, and taking the most important step of all by signing up for your county's emergency alert system. With winter weather in mind, we invite you to read a repeat on the following pages of Chief Ricky's Winter Weather Prep Checklist that originally ran in our December 6, 2024 Big Canoe Living.

Thanks again,

Ricky Jordan, Public Safety Chief

Lydell Mack, Director of Public Works

Delaine Faris, Director of Communications

WINTER WEATHER PREPAREDNESS CHECK LIST

CHIEFRICKYJORDAN

Gather supplies before the weather hits Have a 72-hour supply of food and water stocked in your home, but a week’s supply is recommended. Make sure to have your prescriptions filled as well as a good supply of over-the-counter meds and first-aid provisions.

Protect your pipes from freezing by allowing them to drip continuously until the weather warms up.

Backup power and heat are recommended. This could mean a backup generator or alternative heat source, such as a fireplace, that can be used if the power fails.

If you have a wood fireplace, stock up on wood as soon as possible, and use fireplace safety best practices.

If you use a space heater, be sure to keep it at least three feet away from furniture and drapes. Electric space heaters with automatic shut-off switches and non-glowing elements are the safest

In the event of a power outage, please call Amicalola Power at 706-253-0359.

Have multiple flashlights ready, which you should also test out. If you use candlelight, watch the flame carefully to avoid a surprise fire.

Avoid traveling as much as possible, even when roads appear clear. Black ice, especially on our hills, is a nearly invisible and highly dangerous hazard.

If you see Public Safety vehicles traveling with ease, it’s likely because we have installed heavy-duty tire chains or are in a track-equipped vehicle. Do not try to follow a Public Safety vehicle unless you are told to do so

Consider stocking up on foods that do not require cooking.

Be sure to have a manual can opener on hand.

If you must travel, a good idea is to have a cell phone charger that you keep fully charged, boots for cold and wet weather, snacks, food, water, and blankets in your vehicle in case you become stranded.

When driving through Big Canoe, be aware that our rapid elevation changes mean that some areas in Big Canoe are colder than others While it may be raining at the North Gate, it could be snowing on Cox Mountain Drive.

If you are stranded in our community, try to find a nearby home to stay in while you wait for help Public Safety will attempt to access anyone stuck in a bad place, but they can’t guarantee a quick arrival if the conditions are an issue.

Please be patient! Big Canoe has a large fleet of road-clearing equipment to make roads passable as quickly as possible; however, due to our elevation and temperatures, if the roads are plowed and cleared too soon, an icy film will freeze, resulting in black ice.

We're pleased to announce that the Wellness Center is beginning a $615,000 investment in some much needed upgrades. Many of these upgrades were identified from your feedback in the recent member satisfaction survey and feedback from our Wellness Center staff. From March 3rd - 22nd, the Wellness Center will be closed for maintenance while we replace:

Cardio equipment

Replace the flooring

Replace windows and doors

Upgrade the sauna

Paint, and deep clean

Prior to the closure, a new natatorium dehumidifying system, desert air, will begin installation on Monday, January 27 through Tuesday, January 28, which should be finished with no interruption to operation, other than a section of the parking lot blocked for their equipment staging. We thank you for your patience during the maintenance work and we're confident you'll enjoy the new equipment and appreciate the improved appearance.

It’s sometimes more difficult to stay motivated if you exercise alone. If so, you may want to find a class that interests you.

·First of all class environments tend to be fun.

·You interact with friends and other fitness minded people which also results in a sense of accountability. Class members actually notice when you don't show up for class and ask you where you were.

·There’s music to add to the energy level and create a workout environment.

·A certified instructor pushes you to help you reach your fitness and health goals. Their focus is to keep you safe as well.

Zumba, Zumba Toning, Dance Jam and Dance Exercise allow you to dance yourself to fitness! You may find that very enjoyable.

Yoga, Pilates and Deepening Practices work on core strength and may provide the stress relief to a hectic day and the ticket to unwind.

Classes are for everyone and Boot Camp has as many guys as ladies, maybe more & Body Bar allows you to use the amount of weight that’s right for you allowing everyone to get the results they are after.

If you are a beginner to fitness, start with Exercise 101. This class is ideal for a beginner or someone recovering from an injury or procedure. There are also classes online if you can’t get to the gym. Our website has the links to online classes.

The key is to find something you enjoy. If you enjoy it, you’re much more likely to stick with it.
