Greetings,

According to the Farmers' Almanac, the official midpoint of summer is quickly approaching. This means there are still plenty of days to make summer memories. We have just 14 tickets left for you to join us in the Hank Aaron Terrace on Friday, August 22nd, when your Atlanta Braves take on the New York Mets. In addition to the link to join us for the Braves game, this edition of Big Canoe Living brings you the first look at this fall's events and updates on Beach Club hours after August 4th. Mark your calendars and save the dates! It takes many volunteers to make these events happen in Big Canoe, and we invite you to volunteer for Trunk or Treat and with the Programs, Events, and Clubs Committee by clicking the link on their pages

This year ' s Board of Directors Election will require a primary. In this edition of Big Canoe Living, you have the opportunity to meet the six candidates by reading their profiles, and then spend time with them live on Tuesday, July 29th, at Cousins Hall in Big Canoe Chapel for a candidate forum. The event starts with a wine and cheese reception at 4:30 PM outside of the Chapel The forum begins at 5:00 PM, with time reserved for a Q&A session.

In closing, thank you to everyone who attended yesterday's Leadership Big Canoe wine and cheese information event. Please consider joining the class this year; you will gain a deep understanding of Big Canoe's governance and operations, and be rewarded with the new friends you will make throughout the program

Cheers,

Delaine

POA Board of Directors Candidate

Please explain what motivates you to want to serve on the Big Canoe Board of Directors.

Big Canoe is a unique and special place We all have the opportunity to help protect what makes it great while improving how we work together as a community The Board plays a vital role in shaping systems, policies, and communication that affect daily life. That’s where my strengths lie: understanding how things work, spotting what could work better, and building practical solutions that serve everyone. Good governance isn’t just about decisions it’s about building trust, open dialogue, including and informing the entire community. That’s the leadership I believe in and hope to bring to the Board

What is important to remember when you try to convince others of your point of view when it differs from the larger group? Give an example of when you experienced this and the result.

Seek first to understand, then to be understood. Opinions should be weakly held rooted in principle but open to change when better facts or perspectives emerge When a viewpoint differs from the majority, it’s important to listen first, assume positive intent, and focus on solutions that benefit the entire community. Productive debate isn’t about being right it’s about getting to the best outcome for the group—in this case—the Property Owners of Big Canoe.

I believe in an Idea Meritocracy: the best idea wins regardless of where it comes from. Over the last decade in my consulting business, there have been many situations where our team had differing opinions on how best to help our clients We always collected everyone’s ideas, then discussed the pros and cons of each, then voted on which idea we all believed would lead to the best outcome.

What are your two top strengths and/or values you bring to the board?

Two core strengths I bring to the Board are systems thinking and a deep respect for fairness and transparency. These directly relate to the Board's goals of Better Planning and Better Communication.

Please explain what motivates you to want to serve on the Big Canoe Board of Directors.

I care deeply about this community and believe my experience can make a meaningful difference Big Canoe is a residential mountain community not a resort and I’m committed to protecting that identity. My motivation comes from a lifetime of service flying CH-47D helicopters in combat, managing multimillion-dollar portfolios at Siemens, and serving as Vice-Chair of the POA Finance and Audit Committee. I hold a BBA in Management and a Master of Science in Information Systems, which inform my fact-based, analytical approach. I am a 2023 graduate of Leadership Big Canoe I want to ensure balanced, transparent governance that reflects our shared values What is important to remember when you try to convince others of your point of view when it differs from the larger group? Give an example of when you experienced this and the result.

You must listen with respect, ground your position in facts, and work toward the best decision not the easiest one. As a company commander in Korea, I once challenged a battalion-level plan that risked overextending our helicopter crews. I proposed a safer, more effective alternative. While my input wasn’t initially welcomed, my logic prevailed and the plan was revised. That experience shaped my leadership philosophy: speak clearly, support the final decision, and always focus on mission success

What are your two top strengths and/or values you bring to the board?

I bring integrity and decisiveness. I’ve built a career on making timely, informed decisions, not avoiding difficult choices I also believe in transparency My wife, Kimberly, is a local realtor To avoid any appearance of conflict, I will recuse myself from any Board decisions involving the sale of POA-owned residential real estate.

Please explain what motivates you to want to serve on the Big Canoe Board of Directors.

My husband and I elected to make Big Canoe our forever home, believing it to offer unbelievable sanctuary in a crazy world We all must work together with whatever skills we possess to protect this miracle we call home. To give back, I can offer my broad experience to help balance and augment our existing board with my factual and real-world background in a wide range of issues Big Canoe faces as an evolving community. In GA’s largest county that faced similar changes, I was directly involved in Strategic Planning, Comprehensive Plans (land use, zoning, long-range issues management), communications, grants and aid, and Human Resources I can offer an understanding of life safety, public safety, and disaster plans including how local communities interface with county/state/national responses. As county commissioner and as the state chair of the Economic Development and Transportation Committee for the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia, I developed 26 years of experience in working with Community Members, Developers, Zoning, Non-Profit, Regulatory Issues, Revenue Department, Water and Electric Companies, and City/County Issues My role as a professional research chemist means I have a long-term view of water, utilities, land-use, conservation, and how to work with regulatory and government entitles

What is important to remember when you try to convince others of your point of view when it differs from the larger group? Give an example of when you experienced this and the result.

Probably the most helpful skill is to listen to what the community tells you That is usually half the issue I’m used to handling large-scale public meetings where people are passionate about a lot of different topics. It is important to do your homework, not speak off the cuff, get the facts and make a balanced recommendation. I have many, many examples, but one that comes to mind is this. Simpsonwood Park purchase in Peachtree Corners, 223 acres. It was a critical part of the community Engaging every group I could to help convince the Methodist Church (that had owned the park for over 25 years) to sell the property for a passive park and not sell to a developer for townhomes for a 70% higher price Working together with the community, I along with our Congressman, Senator, local legislators, and the National Park Service were successful in purchasing the park from the Methodist Church, in lieu of them selling to the developer. The park was purchased and preserved to be enjoyed for generations to come.

POA Board of Directors Candidate Bob Kelley

Please explain what motivates you to want to serve on the Big Canoe Board of Directors.

I love the feeling every time I drive through the gates, the pressures of the world are lifted from my shoulders I enjoy the beauty of nature, the wildlife, and the mountains Big Canoe provides every day Since I have moved here, I give back by supporting several organizations in BC; by joining or giving. Big Canoe is a community made up of volunteers. Every year Leadership Big Canoe teaches residents about the internal workings; LBC also creates a new group of volunteers. I graduated from Leadership Big Canoe; I learned a great deal! I have the time to dedicate to the board whatever amount of time it takes I have the education, skillset, the business experience to dedicate and guide Big Canoe into the future

What is important to remember when you try to convince others of your point of view when it differs from the larger group? Give an example of when you experienced this and the result.

Collaboration is a key to meeting a goal Compromise will always be part of any discussion if there are differing opinions It is important to maintain a focus on the goal of the group and listen to what everyone is saying.

We were moving a large trade show in Morial Convention Center late one evening. The union labor did not want to work past the end of their shift; however, we needed to finish the job to open our event the next morning Negotiating with the union steward, we resolved the situation and union crew finished the job and we opened successfully with a great looking show floor

What are your two top strengths and/or values you bring to the board?

When I returned from Vietnam, I spent my career in the hospitality industry As a leader in the hospitality industry, I worked with venues, suppliers, customers, show organizers, exhibitors, and attendees With experience in sales, operations, and as a company owner, I had to be a strong communicator and an effective listener. Communication is a strength I bring as a candidate for the vacant board seat. Listening is a major part of this strength.

Bill Thurber

Please explain what motivates you to want to serve on the Big Canoe Board of Directors.

Big Canoe is a special place, full of natural beauty and wonderful people with a spirit of volunteerism. My wife and I have been property owners for 18 years, and this is by far the best place we have ever lived. Volunteerism is in my DNA, and upon my retirement in 2019, I decided it was time to give back to Big Canoe I am a 2020-2021 graduate of Leadership Big Canoe and have served 5+ years on the finance/audit committee (chair 2023 and 2024) I am highly motivated to continue my volunteer service as a member of the POA board of directors, and if elected I aim to improve financial communication and continue to ensure financial transparency.

I am also motivated by a desire to seize the momentum of the last 5+ years that resulted in dramatic improvements (e g , marina, racquet club, beach club, wellness) and I strongly support the continued upgrading of key amenities and infrastructure within our 50+ year-old community “Voice of community” is very important and I will advocate for an update to gauge the community’s priorities for future investment.

I offer experience that will add value, including undergraduate and graduate degrees in accounting and finance, combined with 40+ years of finance experience I also have extensive experience in cash flow management, budgeting and long-range planning, and board relationships.

What is important to remember when you try to convince others of your point of view when it differs from the larger group? Give an example of when you experienced this and the result.

When attempting to convince others of my point of view I strive to present fact-based, data driven information, with a willingness to listen to and understand opposing points of view and focus on what is in the best interest of all parties.

While serving as treasurer of a sizable private equity (PE) owned organization, the PE investors grew “tired” and were reluctant to continue investing capital to support the business

Please explain what motivates you to want to serve on the Big Canoe Board of Directors.

After spending 25 years visiting family in Big Canoe, we relocated here 5 years ago after we realized we had found our peaceful mountain community I am eager to leverage my professional expertise to represent Big Canoe Homeowners as a POA Board Member. Throughout my career I effectively managed multimillion dollar budgets, skills I am confident would greatly benefit Big Canoe and its Homeowners.

What is important to remember when you try to convince others of your point of view when it differs from the larger group? Give an example of when you experienced this and the result.

The introduction of license plate reader cameras at UGA was initially met with resistance from the Administration, which did not perceive the benefits as justification for the cost. Nonetheless, following a thorough investigation and a presentation of the benefits, including revenue generation and enhanced safety and security, two camera systems were acquired, leading to a full deployment of the fleet

As HOA President, I presented a 10-year strategic plan to the HOA Board, initially receiving skepticism but ultimately gaining approval by demonstrating the long-term cost savings of prioritizing proactive repairs, replacements and maintenance By the time of my departure, we were 5 years into the plan and significantly ahead of schedule

What are your two top strengths and/or values you bring to the board?

My experience spans over 25 years in Law Enforcement, more than 10 years managing UGA’s Campus Construction and Maintenance and 12 years as President of a 700 Home HOA in Gwinnett County

I was a Volunteer Fire Fighter for over 14 Years in Pennsylvania, and I recently joined the Big Canoe Fire Department.

Clubhouse Update

PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THE CONSTRUCTION ZONE, AND DO NOT ENTER THE CLUBHOUSE, as we approach the last weeks of construction. We do not yet have a certificate of occupancy for anyone other than contractors and staff. This week, we began moving the furniture from the Bistro. Kitchen equipment training began. - Sam Harmon

DO NOT ENTER CONSTRUCTION ZONE

Like you, we can't wait for the opening of the renovated clubhouse. As construction continues, our contractor requests that all residents and guests refrain from entering the construction zone for your safety and to help minimize liability to the contractor and the Property Owners Association.

THIS AREA IS AN ACTIVE WORK ZONE WITH RESTRICTED ACCESS, AND UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY COULD RESULT IN SERIOUS INJURY OR DELAYS TO THE PROJECT.

We appreciate your cooperation and understanding as we work to bring this exciting project to a close.
