PROUDLY PRESENTS

Alan Bibey & Grasstowne CHRISTENSEN PERFORMANCE HALL on The Madeline Janis Courter Stage

Graciously Sponsored By BARB AND TOM DUNHAM

A Message for our Friends

BIG ARTS, now in its fifth decade, was created by and for the community. Time has not diminished our devotion to a fundamental purpose and principle: To provide a warm and welcoming place that celebrates the arts, and the artist in all of us, and helps remind us of our shared humanity. Throughout the recent rough years of closures and cancellations, we never closed our doors. We flung them open to host several free gatherings, complete with entertainment, food, and beverages, and to offer a space in which we can revel in the joy of being together again. Now, a full season of great lectures, workshops, films, fine arts exhibits and performing artists is back! It is deeply rewarding for us to see the hallways, galleries, seats and classrooms filled with new and old friends enjoying all that BIG ARTS offers. Our commitment to community extends to the stewardship of our donors’ dollars. While our foundation is strong, we took a financial “hit” during the canceled seasons. With a brand-new season up and running, we look to our loyal friends and patrons to help us weather the changes and continue to flourish.

Thank you for including BIG ARTS in your charitable giving. Every dollar is deeply appreciated. Your support signals your belief in our mission and ensures that BIG ARTS continues to be a vibrant community partner in Sanibel and Captiva’s enduring quality of life – now and for decades to come.

Rene Savarise Chair of the Board

Lee Ellen Harder Executive Director

Alan Bibey, Mandolin • Zak McLamb, Bass Jeff Huffman, Guitar • Justin Jenkins, Banjo Kati Penn, Fiddle

ALAN BIBEY & GRASSTOWNE Alan Bibey & Grasstowne is comprised of very well respected veterans of bluegrass music, as well as some of the finest young musicians in the industry. This combination makes Alan Bibey & Grasstowne one of the hottest and most energetic bands touring today! Band leader, Alan Bibey, is a multi-award winning and Grammy-nominated artist known for his exceptional mandolin mastery. He is joined by two-time SPBGMA Bass Player of the Year, Zak McLamb, one of the most highly respected banjo players in bluegrass, Justin Jenkins, a super flat picker and rhythm guitarist, Tony Watt and the newest member, Kati Penn, well known as one of the greatest voices and fiddle players in Bluegrass.

BAND MEMBERS ALAN BIBEY, mandolin Since first hitting the scene in the early 1980’s, Alan has made a name for himself as one of the most technically gifted mandolinists in bluegrass and acoustic music. He was an original member of such ground-breaking bands as The New Quicksilver, IIIrd Time Out, BlueRidge and, for the last 12 years, Alan Bibey & Grasstowne. He has been voted Mandolin Performer Of The Year by SPBGMA six times, including 2018, 2019 and 2020. Alan also won 2019 and 2020 IBMA Mandolin Player Of The Year as well as Gospel Song Of The Year for Gonna Rise & Shine. He had won previously for Instrumental Album Of The Year, Album Of The Year and Recorded Event Of The Year, just to name a few. ZAK MCLAMB, bass Zak started playing music at the age of 7, when his father, a banjo player, bought a bass, taught him a few notes and encouraged him to play. Zak studied under a classical bassist for three years, learned the fundamentals, then took the formal knowledge and applied it to his true musical love, Bluegrass. In 1988, Zak started playing music with his parents in a local group, The Tony McLamb Band. In 1992, He joined the Raleigh-based Bluegrass Band, New Vintage. New Vintage won both the SPBGMA International Band Championship and the Pizza Hut International Bluegrass Showdown. Zak has recorded with many different artists in recent years and is considered one of the top bass players in the industry.

JEFF HUFFMAN, guitar Jeff Huffman is a guitarist/vocalist from Smithfield, North Carolina. He began his musical journey as a playing guitar with his dad who led the group Roby Huffman and The Bluegrass Cut-ups. Today his musical interests range from the early days of bluegrass to new acoustic music. He counts Bill Monroe, J.D. Crowe & The New South, and the David Grisman Quintet as some of his biggest influences. Touring with his dad exposed Jeff to some of the best musicians in the bluegrass genre. As he got older, he joined local bands and worked as a session musician. Through mutual friends Jeff met Alan, and in time that led to joining Alan Bibey and Grasstowne. JUSTIN JENKINS, banjo Justin Jenkins was introduced to the banjo by a man he went to church with who played in a small gospel band. At age 8, Justin began taking lessons. At age 12, he was invited to become a regular member of the Renfro Valley barn dance where he performed every Friday and Saturday night. While at Renfro Valley, he became friends with Bobby Slone, a regular member of the barn dance and played with J.D. Crowe for 20 years. He also became good friends with performer Steve Gulley. Through Steve, he got his first traveling job with a band from east Tennessee, Blue Moon Rising. He spent 5 years with the band and recorded on 2 albums. From there Justin joined Grasstowne where he has been for 9 years. KATI PENN, fiddle Kati Penn grew up in a musical family in Frankfort, Kentucky, taking up the fiddle at age 10. When she was only 12, she became a member of the Young Acoustic All-Stars, a group of young Bluegrass players that performed throughout America. Since then, she has played fiddle and sung with a number of well-known acts, working alongside five-time IBMA Female Vocalist of the Year Dale Ann Bradley, acclaimed guitarist Jim Hurst, and Grammy-winning country songwriter/musician Pam Gadd. Before joining Alan Bibey & Grasstowne, Kati played with NewTown for 10 years.

Great communities create great organizations – not the other way around. In 1979, BIG ARTS was created, by, and for the community, and owes its rich history to a small band of dedicated artists who drew inspiration from each other and from the breathtaking island beauty that infused their work with grace and authenticity. They set out to create a special gathering place where artistic and educational experiences were accessible to all. Today that vision is alive and well. With the help of our loyal donors and supporters, BIG ARTS will carry that vision forward – providing joy, inspiration and a sense of community for generations to come.

Vision

To create great arts, entertainment and learning experiences that always inspire, enrich and delight.

Mission
