SLEEPING IN THE DIRT FOR
25 YEARS 1
2026 IS THE TIME TO MAKE IT MORE. MORE MILES. MORE CAMPING. MORE COMFORT. MORE MEMORIES. SINCE 2001, we’ve been the Mother of Comfort for adventurers sleeping in the dirt. Inspiring others to get outside in innovative, sustainable comfort continues to drive us after 25 years. As we kick off another year, may we continue to inspire your outdoor spirit. The time to appreciate our access to public lands, national parks throughout the world, and the special places we have the privilege to visit is now. Big Agnes vows to continue to fight to protect and maintain these spaces for generations to come.
This is the year to… Explore new trails. Find the darkest skies. Say “yes” to something you haven’t found the time to do. Make it two nights out instead of one. Book the reservation.
And maybe this is the year you get lucky and win the lottery… the permit lottery that is.

TENT FABRIC
TECHNOLOGY FROM BIG AGNES We sweated over this for years. Sleep better in the backcountry knowing you’re better protected from the elements and doing better for the planet. Engineered to perform season after season, proprietary HyperBead™ fabric is lighter, more waterproof, and more dimensionally stable than traditional fabrics, without intentionally added PFAS or other water repellent chemicals. AT BIG AGNES, we’ve always prided ourselves on
the strength and closeness of the relationships we have with our vendors. We’re able to innovate and develop better products and materials more efficiently because of these relationships. HyperBead™ is a key example of the kind of strides we can make by working with top vendors who are enthusiastic about innovating alongside us. HyperBead™ was developed out of a period of extremely close collaboration with our top fabric manufacturer.
10
We were both motivated to create a new, innovative technology that was able to not only forego the use of forever chemicals, but actually improve upon the PFASfree alternatives currently in the market. We saw a huge opportunity to go beyond just eliminating harmful chemicals and traditional water repellents to make something new that’s stronger, lighter, and better for the consumer in every way. HyperBead™ is a proprietary waterproof coating currently being applied to a handful of our Ultralight tent fabrics. Its highly specialized chemistry and application process make it the most technically advanced and effective water proofing treatment we’ve ever utilized. Because it contains no PFAS chemicals, WR’s or C0 finishes, HyperBead is far more durable and more sustainable than even its C6 DWR counterparts. It won’t wash out or degrade the same way your C6 and C0 finishes will, and it won’t contribute to the buildup of forever chemicals in our bodies or the environment. Additionally, not only is the coating itself more effective, durable and sustainable, but it actually makes the resulting fabric as a whole lighter and stronger. In many cases, additional or thicker coatings can lead to heavier, weaker fabrics, especially when they aren’t applied with fine-tuned processes and machinery. However, the makeup and processing technique used in HyperBead™ works to make the fabric stronger and more lightweight in the end. Starting in our Spring 2025 product line, you can look forward to seeing HyperBead™ in our updated Copper Spur UL and XL lines as well as the Tiger Wall UL, Tiger Wall Platinum, and Fly Creek UL tents. Our development and design team made a handful of awesome changes to all of these styles and HyperBead™ is at the center of it all. In the future we’re hoping to expand this technology to other product families and categories – stay tuned! HyperBead™ Tents for 2026: Fly Creek UL, Tiger Wall Platinum, Tiger Wall UL, Tiger Wall UL Bikepack, Copper Spur UL, Copper Spur UL XL, Copper Spur UL Bikepack, Sarvis VST, String Ridge VST, Pitchpine VST

VST TENTS: DESIGNED IN COLORADO, By: Sanders Park | BUILT FOR YOU Big Agnes Product Designer
A tent is often the biggest investment you’ll make as a backpacker. And when it’s your home for five months or more on a thru-hike, it needs to be exactly right. That’s why our product design and development team spent nearly two years refining every feature and construction detail of the new VST tents. They may not be the lightest or least expensive on the market—but they deliver the performance that thru-hiking demands. Let’s take a closer look at the thoughtful details on VST that will enhance your backcountry experience
Fabric and Construction Thru-hiking is tough on gear. Fabric and method of construction was a huge focus for VST. Could we have used existing fabrics? Sure, but none met the durability, or dimensional stability demands that VST required. We developed our latest HyperBead™ fabric, a 20D recycled polyester base fabric with a 20D high tenacity polyester rip stop that offers superior strength, puncture resistance, dimensional stability, and waterproof performance. Because the String Ridge and Pitchpine tents are non-freestanding, fabric tension is critical for stability. Polyester’s natural hydrophobic properties and low stretch—especially when wet—make it ideal for maintaining pitch integrity. Paired with ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (the world’s strongest fiber) guy lines, VST tents stay taut and stable even in extreme weather. Our proprietary coating on HyperBead™ also allowed the team to fully bond the seams, creating a rainfly free from needle holes and seam tape. When you are deep in the backcountry, the last thing you want is failed seam tape and a leaky tent. VST, featuring our latest HyperBead™ fabric, is built to go the extra mile.
Color and Reflectivity Every color on VST tents was chosen with purpose. Thru-hikers often camp in less-than-ideal or sensitive areas, where stealth matters. The dark, asphalt-colored rainfly helps you stay discreet, while the mint leaf green interior adds a refreshing pop of color inspired by the wonderfully beautiful and mysterious glow of the Aurora Borealis. 16
We also minimized unnecessary reflective elements for added stealth, keeping reflectivity only where it matters—on the guy lines. VST’s intentional color palette helps you rest easy, even when you’re camping where you’d rather not be seen.
We also chose a more durable #5 coil for long-term reliability, even in the zipper-clogging Pacific Crest Trail deserts, and designed ErgoZip, a zipper path that follows your shoulder’s natural rotation—no more awkward reaching to close your tent.
Efficient Footprint Design
VST’s fly zippers are built for the long haul—smooth, waterproof, and made to last.
When designing VST tents, our team set out to maximize livable space while minimizing footprint size. A smaller footprint not only reduces weight but also allows for easier pitching in tight or uneven terrain. On trails like the Appalachian Trail, where dense forests and rocky ground are common, a compact footprint can make the difference between a frustrating setup and a restful night’s sleep. With VST’s thoughtfully engineered floor shapes, you’ll find a comfortable home no matter where you set up camp.
#5 YKK Dynapel™ ErgoZip Fly Zipper Waterproof zippers are essential for weather protection, but common #3 PU-coated zippers often fail under the demands of long-distance backpacking. The coating wears down, and the small coil simply isn’t durable enough. Even with a weight savings, we said no to that. For VST, we worked with YKK to be the first to bring their latest waterproof Dynapel™ technology to market. Dynapel™ eliminates the need for a PU coating, resulting in a zipper that slides smoothly like a standard zipper yet meets the same strict waterproof standards as Aquaguard™.
Easy Set-up After a 20-mile day of alpine climbs and rocky descents, the last thing you want to do is fuss with tent set-up. That’s why our team engineered the VST tents to set up with just six stakes (String Ridge VST 2.5 requires seven) and a built-in ventilation system that’s integral to the tent’s structure—no extra setup required. The ventilation incorporates a high and low vent that work together to reduce condensation while maintaining storm-worthiness, so you can rest easy knowing your tent will stay dry and comfortable through the night. With VST’s superior, fuss-free set-up and ventilation, you can set up quickly and get more zzz’s.
Designed by Passionate Adventurers Our design and development team is a passionate group of creative problem solvers who believe everyone deserves transformative outdoor experiences. They work tirelessly to craft gear that enables those experiences—and the VST tent line is the latest expression of that ethos.
VST is inspired by you.

We paddled and portaged 1,380 miles from Lake Superior to the Hudson Bay
We were the first all-women’s crew publicly documented to start from Grand Portage and make it to York Factory. Although this expedition was transformational for us, this was not just a long canoe trip but a journey of discovery and advocacy. About a year ago, we heard the call of the Northwoods. Yearning to explore the history rooted in the land we would travel. We heard distant cries - the echoes of the voyagers, the lonely loons wailing, the fierce wolves howling. Abby, Olivia, Emma, and I felt drawn to the lakes and rivers draining into the Hudson Bay. We didn’t know back then how this story would unfold. We came to this trip almost as strangers, became one unit, and now, we all sit at home contemplating the weight of finishing an expedition. Just going back to work and school across the country. Now it feels unbelievable to be standing on solid ground after finishing.
Remembering Sometimes the whole trip just feels like a dream. Now I am working on processing this experience and everything that happened along the way. When times were hard I found solace in writing in my journal almost as a sort of therapy. Then and now keeping a list of gratitude keeps me grounded in this experience. Revisiting those journal entries and writing today helps me remember what it felt like to be out there capturing the incredible joys and reflecting on the hardships Being out in the vastness of the backcountry makes you feel so small. The twinkling stars, the Northern Lights, the waves crashing on the shore, looking up at the old growth spruce towering over us, all these passing moments made me realize how lucky I am to be alive. How privileged am I to be here on this Earth. Even the smallest gestures like the motion of paddling, cutting through the water helped me feel connected to the environment and rich history of this wilderness. This is not a feeling I can recreate with a picture or my words. Every moment I was learning more about myself through my interaction with nature. Even the hard times I never want to forget. We definitely had some healthy fun out there battling fierce winds, deadly heat, frigid cold, incessant bugs and more. When the rain poured seeping through our rain coats and soaking us to the bone, when we got caught in a flash hail storm with only our tents as protection, when all we could do was huddle in our sleeping bags for warmth as the wicked winds raged around us.
THE CALL OF THE Bob Swanson Memorial NORTHWOODS Grant Winners I want to remember it all, especially the challenges we had to overcome. This trip is an example of sometimes you know it will be hard and you do it anyway. Like a quote from one of my moms favorite nonprofits “Things That Matter are Hard”. This trip mattered to us.
Minnesota border starting with a 9 mile portage starting at Lake Superior. For many of us, experiencing the Boundary Waters turned us from passionate nature lovers to radical protectors and advocates of these spaces with a renewed focus of getting people outside, especially underserved populations.
After we finished paddling every day it felt weird, knowing that day would never exist again, and knowing it was one more day closer to the end. Every paddle stroke was one closer to the last. We forged forward to one final destination but now I know the trip didn’t end there.
Another aim was to empower women in outdoor spaces especially in paddle-sports by being the representation we wished we had as young girls. We all got our starts in the outdoors as Girl Scouts. We were encouraged to be outside, learn from nature where the tenants of Leave No Trace were underscored in our early education to protect nature at Girl Scout camp. We were so fortunate to be supported by the GS Northern Lakes Canoe Base where Olivia and Abby were both participants and guides. Their goal is to bring young girls into nature out in the Boundary Waters. Trips by women for women.
Advocacy Everything was so breathtaking but once you catch your breath, you realize there is so much left to do. While the physical part of our trip is over and we made it to the finish line, our mission and purpose was about advocacy. At the end of the day, it was much bigger than just four girls and two canoes. We partnered with Save The Boundary Waters to spread awareness of the threat of copper-nickel mining in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area (BWCA) and surrounding watersheds. Our route began in the BWCA, a place we all hold dearly in our hearts. We paddled and portaged through the entire Ontario/ 34
We documented a lot of our trip to show people that it’s possible. A great way to make people passionate about a place is to show them and have them build a connection with it. Not only do we want to preserve these memories for ourselves, we want to expose these regions to others and show why they have intrinsic value but also provide resources like the GS base for people to accessibly get in the outdoors
Receiving the Bob Swanson Memorial Grant When we got word that we would be the 2025 recipients of the Bob Swanson Memorial Grant, it was surreal and we could not believe it at first. Then after having an emotional conversation with Peterson about the impact of Bob Swanson as a person, we felt even more honored to receive this award. Initially when Olivia wrote the grant we didn’t ask for much, if we could just simply get a tent to give us shelter we would be more than happy. But being the Mother of Comfort, Big Agnes provided us with our entire sleep systems, full puffy suits, and sturdy basin chairs. We could not overstate the kindness and support we felt. The team was always attentive, helpful, and treated us with respect. We feel honored to be attached to such an honest and trustworthy brand. It put us on a good foot to be able to feel confident and happy with our gear from the start. More importantly, we felt connected to Bob Swanson and honored to carry his legacy with us on this trip. Planning for this trip we were very conscious of the quality of our gear, it had to survive with us over 80 days in the backcountry. We would have never imagined that we would carry gear of such high quality. Big Agnes made this trip accessible for us and supported our mission going above and beyond what we asked for.
