Bienvenidos A G O S T O 2 0 1 9 A U G U S T
El Aljibe Restaurant an ineludible choice The good Cuban cuisine is extremely prestigious within the island and abroad. Exquisite, Creole, authentic and traditional; these are some of its qualifiers. One of the best places in Havana where customers can discover this is at the El Aljibe Restaurant, owned by the extra-hotelier company Palmares Inc. Visitors are often delighted by the kind and professional manners of the waiter service, its home-like atmosphere and the tasty typical Cuban food. The traditional place is half-a-century-old and offers an exquisite and exclusive specialty: the “El Aljibe” roasted chicken that usually comes with a nice portion of “dormidos” black beans, as they are popularly known. Many years have passed and there are only a few founding members left, but we must not forget the story behind this successful business. It all started with the Garcias, a family that ventured, many years ago, to try their luck in gastronomy and through hard work, sacrifice and dedication they managed to have one of the most famous restaurants of the ‘50s: the Rancho Luna del Wajay.

In 1991 the family wanted to find the ideal place to create and run a new restaurant that followed Rancho Luna’s style. Thus the current version of “El Aljibe” was born, with a very similar architectural structure to that of the old restaurant of Wajay, and where customers are always given an excellent treatment. There we can find an authentic, traditional and varied menu that includes not only the time-honored recipes of the grandmother, but also the most contemporary Cuban dishes. This curious “hut” located in the middle of the elegant neighborhood of Miramar is a first-class choice for every tourist who wants to taste the best of the Creole kitchen, that is why many personalities of the political, cultural and sports life of Cuba and the world visit this installation, admiring the quality of the service and the dedication of those who work there. Among them are the former president of the United
States James Carter, Steven Spielberg, Mohamed Ali, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Matt Dylon, Jack Nickolson, Danny Glover, Kevin Costner, Imanol Arias, Ana Fidelia Quirot, Javier Sotomayor, Jorge Luis Prats, Alicia Alonso, Omar Linares, Compay Segundo, Juan Formell, Paulito FG, David Calzado, Olga Tañon, and many more.
services: the à-la-carte menu, take-away food orders, attention to large groups or travel agencies, etc. They have also participated in many fairs, events and concerts all over the island. Around 250 clients come every day, and we’ve heard that people always leave with a look of satisfaction on their faces.
For most of them, besides the food itself, one of the greatest things about El Aljibe is the beautiful family tradition behind it. A feeling of thrill invades us when we hear the legends and fables that surround this place.
In 2013, it was granted the “4-forks” category for its achievements. The place has obtained several national and international awards as well, including the Certificate of Excellence for the outstanding reviews consistently obtained in the largest travel site in the world –TripAdvisor- for 3 consecutive years, from 2016 to 2018.
“Sergio” and “Pepe”, who, unfortunately, have already passed away, triumphed wherever they opened a business because they knew how to win over the public in an exceptional way, and they also taught important lessons to their workers and friends. Today the restaurant preserves its original magic, and aside from the excellent treatment, they also provide different
To be the number one choice of anyone who wants to taste the typical Cuban food is definitely a difficult task, but they have managed to conquer a special spot in our “ineludible” list of first rate restaurants.

Discovering the batey culture The eastern region of Cuban has many geographical and cultural beauties. Among the trees, under the Nipeen mountain range in the province of Holguin, just 2 km from the new community of Biran, there’s a hidden treasure that visitors can’t miss. The spot came to life by the will and imagination of Angel Maria Bautista Castro Argiz and Don Angel, and it was finally managed by Lina Ruz Gonzalez, the wife, faithful friend and rector of the family assets. Thus was born the batey of Biran, known for being the first home of Fidel Castro. The foundations of the batey of Biran are half Spanish, from Don Angel’s ancestors, and half Cuban from Doña Lina’s side, the constructive style is called baloonframe and it comes from the United States, however, it was built by Haitian and black hands. That defining mixture shaped the enclave of Biran; its culinary customs, ways of speaking and doing, that were mixed in that exact point of geography and result in a vision of tropical paradise that we can’t ignore.

It is a singular fact that a batey from eastern Cuba, in the first half of the twentieth century, offered the variety of services that Don Angel could be proud of. Education, trade, health, workshops and mail offices, as well as houses for workers, Haitian huts and a barracks, making a total of 27 facilities made mostly of wood in 1958. Later the family pantheon was added to the composition. The structures were arranged on each side of the royal road, among them there still stands the house of the Castro Ruz family, simulating a protective totem from which the rest of the batey was arranged. This main house, built on stilts, was designed based on the aforementioned architectural style, which was brought to the country by the gringos and was introduced in Banes, Antilles, Preston, Cueto and Guaro.

The house is still painted in yellow, as it was before, with a red hip roof that imitates the typical soils of the area. Moreover, the house that is currently visited is a replica of the original, and it was commissioned by Celia Sanchez. This replica keeps the original colors of the finely worked wooden walls, the floor and the ceiling, as well as the beautiful furniture. The original property disappeared almost entirely because of an accident caused by Don Angel. On the hot night of September 3, 1954, the Galician left his tobacco lit on the bedside table. The fire devoured the house with its wooden walls and roof. Luckily, no victim was mourned; and even Doña Lina’s Ford, which is kept under the house, came out unscathed from the tragedy. To discover the old batey of Biran is to approach the will of its founders, to the stories hidden behind orange trees and royal palms. To relive the culture of a batey and to get lost in the beauty of the tropical nature that still surrounds it, is an unforgettable experience. Do not miss the opportunity and pay a visit to this wonderful location.

Arte en la Rampa is the longest Cuban cultural fair, taking into account that it keeps its doors open during the months of July and August in the Pabellón Cuba, where it welcomes more than 200 000 national and foreign visitors each summer in Havana.
Although the facility is divided into small booths, where participants come to sell all types of handcrafted creations, as well as albums and books, the event offers a fantastic literary-artistic program that includes concerts, performances, meetings with renowned Cuban artists and intellectuals, official presentations of phonograms, visual arts projects and editorial novelties.
EGREM, Artex, Casa de las Americas, Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry, Genesis, Casa del Abanico, the National Book Distributor, among other cultural industries, join this celebration of the beautiful, the useful and the academic, led by the Cuban Fund for Cultural Assets. The sale of handcrafted pieces is the main attraction of the event. These products are often made with Cuban natural elements and symbols, and they represent the creative talent of the artists, who have either inherited the skills of their ancestors or trained to be experts in design and architecture. Their relationship with Visual Arts has allowed them to promote a permanent dialogue between the genuine traditions and the components of modernity, in the production of high-quality crafts for ornamental, home and personal use. This is definitely one of the best ways to bring aesthetic pleasure to our lives. There are more than 60 sale booths every year offering ceramic works, wood crafts, furniture, footwear, jewelry, textiles, gifts, papier maché, dolls, ornamental plants and flower arrangements, as well as serigraphs, prints and reproductions of many of the art pieces of the National Museum of Fine Arts.

All the musical genres converge in this fair: son, jazz, trova, rap, pop, salsa, rumba and punto cubano or guajiro, played by, mostly, young talents of the artistic panorama of the country. There is a central stage for band concerts open from Friday to Sunday, a dance floor, and a more intimate area called La Pergola, where couples or friends can have a nice time together. On July we saw Telmary, Tony Avila, Interactivo, Raul Torres, and Abel Gerones playing in the big stage, among others, and August has a great schedule of its own that includes the Failde Orchestra, Anacaona, Jose Luis Cortes, Haidee Milanes, Arnaldo y su talismán, David Blanco and Adrian Berazain. Many go to AR with their children so that they can enjoy the shows especially planned for them; others will be there mainly to discover the great showcase of the best of Cuban cultural production. The event invites you to have a good time and to find amazing home décor ideas. Always keep in mind that there’s a practical quality in beauty! Arte en la Rampa, on its twentieth birthday, is deeply engraved in the taste of Cuban and foreign visitors. There are many reasons to give it a try: the location of the fair in the heart of the capital; the schedule, from 1 in the afternoon to 7 in the evening from Tuesdays to Fridays, and from 10 in the morning on Saturdays and Sundays, and the possibility of enjoying the best of contemporary Cuban art. It’s, undoubtedly, one of the best things to do if you decide to visit Havana this summer. Do not miss AR and make a fun memory with your friends or family. You’ll have one of the best aesthetic and cultural experiences of your life.

With a new album, Canela de Cuba celebrates its 30th birthday A lo Canela, the most recent phonogram of the Cuban female group Canela de Cuba, produced by the Company of Editions and Musical Recordings (EGREM), pays homage to the thirtieth anniversary of the band’s foundation (August 20, 1989). A lo Canela reviews all the musical genres that this group has explored; it comes back to different sounds and repertoires by mixing the most traditional rhythms of the Caribbean and takes some of the harmonic elements of jazz as well. Their African influences are behind the beautiful guitar solos, and surprisingly they have some bachata-styled songs included in the track list too. This production also has a special touch: the intervention of the formidable Omara Portuondo, who gives us the classic «El Panquelero» by Abelardo Barroso. This new phonogram of the EGREM, produced by the experienced instrumentalist Emilio Vega, brings together eleven other songs: five of them were written by one of the founders of Canela de Cuba, the musical director and arranger, Jesus Fuentes, and the piece “No sé”, created by the lead Zoe Fuentes will be performed by somebody who is extremely popular today in Cuba: Eric Iglesias «Cimafunk». The professional level maintained by Canela de Cuba during these thirty years is largely due to the fact that its founders came from the National Concert Band and the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba; which guarantees their very solid bond and their great versatility as instrumentalists, composers and arrangers. During their artistic life, this band has conquered the heart of the public and the specialized critic not only in Cuba, since it has participated in numerous festivals in Europe, Asia, America, and the Caribbean, and they have shared the stage with remarkable international artists, among them: Cesaria Evora, Chucho Valdes, Herbie Hancock, Miriam Makeba, and Phil Collins.

CONDE DE LOMBILLO - PA L AC E Texto y fotos / Text and photos Bienvenidos
Wrapped in the shadows of the Cathedral of Havana, there is the Conde de Lombillo Palace, which was restored once again. It’s a majestic structure made of yellow exterior walls and Lima-styled balconies in white and blue hues. Simple and elegant bars protect the large windows that are always open to let the breeze in. The palace was built at the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment, and it was intended to become a shrine for light and peacefulness.
It’s not like the famous count was the original landlord. A picturesque group of colonial characters had the pleasure to inhabit it first; all marked by the fate of fortune and opulence just like the mansion itself. The palace did not avoid adversity though; during the short-lived English invasion, a bomb destroyed its beautiful hallway.

Today, people often associate the name of Jose Maria Lombillo y Ramirez –heir to the Lombillo patrimony–, with the building. Interesting fact; the heart of all social life in the mansion during the nineteenth century was the Countess, Concepcion Montalvo y Pedroso. She was the rightful owner of the house, and thanks to her charming personality, the palace became the core of cultural life in Havana at that time. The lady organized social gatherings on Wednesdays afternoons to escape boredom and forget the abrasive heat. At night, she summoned the Havana aristocracy. General Captain Blanco, the bishop, intellectuals and foreign visitors were usually seen in the palace. Any excuse was good to throw one of her unforgettable parties; no wonder her friends called them the “Aunt Pollita’s Wednesdays”, for these were all planned according to the

warm tropical weather, just like it was back then. On the upper floor, the blue-stained glass windows harmonize with the square.
Possibly the most illustrious character that inhabited the house during the Post-Colony era was Mr. Emilio Roig de Leuchsering, the first historian of Havana who dreamed about rescuing and preserving the city. The famous gentleman established his temple of “thought and action” there, so, at the beginning of the twentieth century, the palace became his private office.
Today this magical palace is a gallerymuseum, and people who visit the square are completely allured by its looks. There are many reasons to see it: its remarkable interiors decorated in white and blue, its history, etc. Despite its age, the palace brings a sense of calm and holiness to the tourists.
Too many secrets are still hidden in the small interior courtyard. Ladies from that time probably had romantic affairs there; you can close your eyes and imagine their fancy garments and fidgety fans. Somehow the aroma of old candles lingers in every corner; and who knows if a nostalgic girl once looked into the waters of the ancient well, crying her heart out… it’s been there for over a century, after all. It’s impossible not to fall for a place that holds so many stories and captivating vestiges. The courtyard is a pleasant refuge from the
Travelers come and go all the time, but the palace, with its magnificent Doric columns, it’s always standing. Getting there is pretty easy; just ask locals how to find Empedrado Street, and you’ll be at its gates in the blink of an eye. Each stone supports the colonial soul of the house. When walking through the main door, going back in time is a simple and satisfying experience, just let your imagination fly and you’ll breathe a bit of colonial air. If by some great coincidence you happen to be in town, don’t miss the chance to unveil the city’s past. The palace is a magical bridge to the pre-Hispanic years of the colony.
