A World-Renowned

HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL Teaching Hospital

BIDMC and HMS are part of a larger, roughly 20-square-block campus called the Longwood Medical Area, a thriving community of medical, academic, research, and cultural organizations that combine to create a powerful intellectual and economic engine for Boston and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Unlike many medical schools, HMS does not own or operate hospitals, relying instead on agreements with 16 clinical affiliates and research institutes—vital partners that provide patient care and clinical training. These hospitals and institutes employ many physicians and scientists with HMS faculty appointments. BIDMC established a formal teaching affiliation with HMS in 1928 and is one of four flagship teaching hospitals affiliated with the medical school today.

In this role, BIDMC serves as a site for the principal clinical experience and a number of clerkships; we are committed to ensuring that HMS students have a positive educational experience and achieve their objectives while rotating through the hospital.

MEDICAL CENTER’S New Inpatient Building

BIDMC is a founding member of Beth Israel Lahey Health (BILH), a pioneering integrated health care system offering a full continuum of health care services, ranging from hospital to ambulatory to urgent to behavioral health care. BILH was created as a transformational approach to health care delivery in the Commonwealth—its unique structure designed to advance meaningful collaboration across organizations, care settings, specialties, and geographies to ensure patients receive the treatment they need in the communities where they live and work. Upon its formation on March 1, 2019, BILH became one of the two largest health care systems in the state, comprising eight community hospitals; three academic medical centers and teaching hospitals; and two specialty hospitals. The system encompasses 35,000 employees, 4,500 physicians (including more than 800 primary care physicians), and 9,000 nurses, who manage the care of more than 1.3 million patients across its service area, which stretches from southern New Hampshire to Cape Cod.

As part of BIDMC’s mission to provide extraordinary care supported by world-class research and education, we are planning construction of a new 10-story inpatient building to better serve our patients and support our caregivers. BIDMC’s first new free-standing building in more than 20 years, this state-of-the-art facility on our West Campus will be designed to help the medical center adapt to meet the increasingly complex needs of our patients and communities in a rapidly changing health care environment.

As we embrace a more strategic, patientcentered model of health care across our growing system, we recognize that focusing on BIDMC’s unique assets in medically complex treatment, technological ingenuity, and innovative research will be critical to our success, and this new building will provide us with an opportunity to capitalize and expand these strengths.

Peter J. Healy Peter J. Healy is president of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC), a premier Harvard-affiliated teaching hospital and founding member of Beth Israel Lahey Health. Utilizing his nearly 30 years of leadership experience at both teaching and community hospitals, Mr. Healy has strategically strengthened the vital areas of patient care services, operations, management, and finance to enhance BIDMC’s patient-centered mission and promote quality improvement.

As president, Mr. Healy is focused on leveraging the expertise of BIDMC’s clinicians, administrators, staff, and board members to optimize the medical center’s distinctive brand of excellence, compassion, and respect and to elevate and extend its culture of “everyday extraordinary.”

Collaborative Programs of Clinical and Research

EXCELLENCE After the defeat of some of the most daunting diseases of the previous century with innovations like antibiotics and vaccines, people are now living longer than ever to face a different set of serious health threats. As a premier academic medical center, BIDMC has a responsibility to focus on those clinical areas that will most directly benefit our patients as they age. With a new inpatient building on our West Campus as the epicenter of our clinical efforts, the medical center will emphasize those disciplines that will be the most meaningful to its patient population— particularly those of high risk and complexity who are best served by a technically advanced teaching hospital. These areas are also existing fields of strength where we have a history of success.

Four major specialties have risen to the top in meeting these criteria, emerging as priorities in our comprehensive capital campaign: BIDMC’s Cancer Center, CardioVascular Institute, Center for Brain Health, and Digestive Disease Center. A sampling of some of the philanthropic opportunities in each area follows.

Cancer Center

CardioVascular Institute

One in three people will face a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, which is why doctors in BIDMC’s Cancer Center are advancing molecular diagnostics and individualized therapies that target cancer at a cellular level to better understand and treat each patient’s unique disease. Within the Cancer Center at BIDMC, research and clinical efforts are closely coordinated. In the Cancer Research Institute, our talented scientists collaborate across disciplines to uncover unique approaches, translate laboratory discoveries into innovative treatments for patients today, and then improve quality and safety models for the patients of tomorrow.

Although cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in this country, our CardioVascular Institute (CVI) has long contributed to the tremendous advances in diagnosis and treatment that have allowed more than a quarter of Americans to live with this wide spectrum of heart and blood vessel conditions. Today, our cardiovascular specialists expertly manage everything from coronary artery disease to advanced heart failure, and our distinguished Harvard-Thorndike Arrhythmia Institute provides state-of-the-art clinical care for cardiac arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythms) and conducts research to understand and treat this challenging disorder. Our cardiac surgery bypass program is one of the largest in Massachusetts, and our surgeons are leaders in inventing and refining minimally invasive cardiovascular techniques. Both our cardiac and vascular surgery programs boast outcomes that lead the nation in low mortality and complication rates, which is particularly impressive given that we treat large volumes of patients with high-risk conditions.

In the Leon V. & Marilyn L. Rosenberg Clinical Cancer Center, our compassionate clinicians also realize there is more to conquering cancer than eradicating deadly cells and work to provide holistic patient-centered care. In our multidisciplinary clinics, patients see leading specialists and have access to coordinated treatment planning and a wealth of support services to help ease the physical and emotional complications of a cancer diagnosis.

Our Cancer Center aims to expand the compassionate, patient-centered care and support services that have long distinguished it from the competition while simultaneously advancing and translating the research breakthroughs that are taking place within its walls each day. We will concentrate on a number of signature, multidisciplinary clinical programs, such as the BreastCare, Prostate Care, and Pancreas Centers. In the research realm, we will focus on ultraprecision medicine, a paradigm-shifting approach which uses groundbreaking biomedical research to inform cancer care. This effort, unique to BIDMC, integrates novel treatment strategies and technological advances led by some of the greatest scientific minds today, from creating “smarter,” more personalized clinical trials to increase the supply of effective therapies to fashioning tailored vaccines that harness patients’ immune systems to fight their own tumors.

Our experts in cardiovascular medicine and surgery are also focused on ensuring that advances in treatment are informed by rigorous scientific evaluation to make care more personalized, safe, efficient, and cost-effective. At the CVI’s newly established Richard A. and Susan F. Smith Center for Outcomes Research in Cardiology, they are now conducting research necessary to validate the safety and benefit of new cardiovascular therapies and technologies relative to current approaches. The CVI is also leading the way in the field of metabolomics research, the analysis of small molecules in the blood that determine how the body burns fuel. Our scientists are investigating and mapping the molecular changes that occur in our bodies during and after exercise to advance our understanding of how physical activity improves and preserves health.

To bring the CVI to new heights, we are seeking to build leadership, improve facilities for clinicians and patients, advance novel models of care, and accelerate pioneering science. To keep pace with our expanding volumes and ensure the finest patient care, we aim to enhance our programs in cardiac catheterization, electrophysiology, and interventional cardiology.

We are also seeking to bolster our translational and basic science efforts as well as our unique outcomes research to validate the safety and appropriate use of new cardiovascular therapies.

Center for Brain Health

Digestive Disease Center

For decades the prevailing dogma in neuroscience was that the adult human brain was essentially hard-wired and unchangeable. In the early 21st century, however, this belief was literally turned on its head, opening up the potential of a variety of approaches that do not simply mask the symptoms of neurological disease or aging but actually change the brain and alter its long-term function. Researchers at BIDMC’s Center for Brain Health are leaders in the development of these “mind-altering” methods, ranging from cognitive training to noninvasive stimulation to the implantation of engineered genes. Our stroke patients with aphasia are learning to speak again with the help of innovative training therapy involving singing and rhythmic tapping. Our physicians are using deep brain stimulation (DBS) as well as noninvasive direct current or magnetic stimulation to successfully treat a wide range of conditions including medicationresistant Parkinson’s disease, depression, epilepsy, and chronic pain. Although still in the laboratory, the use of innovative techniques to implant engineered genes or stem cells to change brain function are avenues of such incredible promise that our scientists are actively working on moving their successes from bench to bedside.

BIDMC’s Digestive Disease Center is one of the nation’s leading programs focused on delivering excellent patient care and conducting groundbreaking translational research related to disorders of the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary system. The Center is made up of a range of premier specialty practices and services that are committed to providing optimal experiences and outcomes for our patients. Our Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center provides comprehensive care and access to new therapies for patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. A nationally renowned program in irritable bowel syndrome, our Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Motility Center uses a multifaceted treatment approach that includes medical, psychological, nutritional, endoscopic, and surgical strategies. Our Liver Center has long been recognized for the development of novel therapies for viral hepatitis and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and in collaboration with our Transplant Institute, provides innovative care to patients with advanced liver disease. One of the few truly multidisciplinary programs for pancreatic disorders in the United States, our Pancreas Center provides holistic, personalized care for patients with acute and chronic pancreatitis and has one of the first dedicated inpatient pancreatitis services in New England. We are also a regional leader in biliary endoscopy and gastrointestinal endoscopy, performing more than 30,000 procedures annually; our Center for Advanced Endoscopy also collaborates with our bariatric surgery team on novel approaches for the treatment of obesity.

The Center for Brain Health has the potential to advance some of the most radical, yet promising, techniques in neuroscience to confront the full range of brain disorders from autism to epilepsy and Parkinson’s to Alzheimer’s disease.

We plan to expand our pioneering clinical efforts to stimulate the brain in a variety of invasive and noninvasive ways to treat and/or prevent neurological illness, including electromagnetic stimulation, melodic intonation therapy, and leading-edge neurosurgery. The Center’s research agenda will focus on a variety of techniques for restoring brain function impaired by disease or injury as well as preventing the inevitable consequences of aging on the brain and nervous system, including landmark basic studies on Alzheimer’s disease and traumatic brain injury.

The Digestive Disease Center aims to augment and enhance our signature programs, particularly our Inflammatory Bowel Disease Center and our Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Motility Center. We also plan to expand our efforts specifically in women’s gastrointestinal health, gastrointestinal wellness, and nutrition. In addition, we need support to retain and recruit top leadership, advance fellowships and other educational programs, and bolster our translational research.

Building on a history of advancing patient-centered initiatives and ideas, the medical center has a wide range of core competencies—including leadership and original thinking in patientcentered primary care, health care quality and safety, clinical information science and technology, and medical research and education—that allows it to be a driver of change for ensuring quality, improving effectiveness, and reducing costs.

Quality and Safety

Digital Health

BIDMC is renowned for its innovative efforts to make medical care better, safer, more efficient, and more cost effective.

Through our Silverman Institute for Health Care Quality and Safety, which acts as the coordinating hub for accelerating innovation in this area, we have launched medical center–wide quality and safety initiatives—from preventing hospitalacquired infections to predicting risk in the intensive care units—that have won us national acclaim and numerous awards.

We were also one of the first institutions to formally recognize that preventing harm in the clinical setting is not limited to adverse physical outcomes but should also incorporate any emotional and psychological impacts on patients and families.

Entrenched in the concepts of respect, dignity, trust, and empathy, our pioneering work on this subset of harm has been endorsed by the Joint Commission and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

BIDMC is an unrivaled leader in health care information technology. Created more than 40 years ago, our Division of Clinical Informatics was among the first academic divisions in the world to concentrate on the use of computers for patient care, teaching, and medical research. Today, under the leadership a host of digital health innovators, we are still pioneering the use of technology in the medical setting, from being the first hospital to adopt the wearable computer Google Glass in the emergency department to launching the groundbreaking OpenNotes project that allows patients to view the notes of their doctors and mental health professionals through our online patient portal. We are also leading a wide array of innovative multidisciplinary projects that employ artificial intelligence and machine learning to solve complex clinical challenges.

We also strive to improve health care by continually evaluating and testing new tools and processes as well as creating replicable models that can be taught and disseminated easily. Our Center for Healthcare Delivery Science (HDS) leads these efforts by applying rigorous, high-quality science to the evaluation of real-world innovations aimed at improving the quality, safety, and value of health care. By design, HDS serves as a shared resource for BIDMC investigators and works collaboratively to pursue projects that benefit our patients and improve the efficacy of health care both locally and nationally.

Building on our long history of creatively applying information technology to health care, we recently launched the Health Technology Exploration Center (HTEC), a novel entity focused exclusively on bringing BIDMC’s technological prowess to the rest of the world. Under the leadership of John Halamka, M.D., one of the most influential figures in information technology today, this prestigious center is extending our reach through formalized affiliations and technological advances that are transforming the medical landscape by making care more efficient, accessible, and integrated. Our HTEC experts rapidly evaluate and develop emerging high-risk, high-reward technologies to bring innovation to BIDMC and disseminate advances to partners across the country and around the globe.
