BUILDING A BICYCLING MOVEMENT FOR EVERYONE Earlier this year, the Bicycle Colorado team was shaken by incontrovertible evidence of violence on our streets—not violence against bicyclists this time, as you’ve certainly heard us speak to before, but violence directed at people of color and at protestors coming out to make their voices heard. Since our founding in 1992, we’ve fought to make our streets safer. We’ve fought for a better Colorado for people who ride bikes, but the murder of George Floyd and the political unrest that followed underscored for us that we must do more to truly work for all Colorado bicyclists so that no one fears for their safety on our roads, in our institutions or at the hands of one another.

work in everything we do. It starts with listening to the most vulnerable voices, and actively seeking their perspectives when they can’t show up to advocate for themselves. It starts with supporting Black, Indigenous and other bicyclists of color, inclusive bike rides, organizations and events and using our platform to spread the word.

We realize our work to create safe biking for all Coloradans is more than a bike issue—it’s an issue of social justice, and we must do all we can to ensure our work is beneficial for everyone for whom we advocate.

We’re proud of the work we’ve done in this space since publishing our Strategic Plan in November 2018, which included our first-ever Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. But we know we’ve still got a long way to go. We ask you to join us as we continue to learn, grow and take action to build a bicycling movement for everyone.

That starts with educating ourselves, and with recognizing and embedding principles of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Those are just a few of the places where we begin to improve our work and expand our reach, but they are only the first steps in a journey that doesn’t end until structural racism is rooted out in our culture, including in bike advocacy and the institutions that make our work possible.
