Bi-partisan Support and Grassroots Efforts Key to Success I n a flurry of activity, both the Colorado House and Senate passed the Bicycle Safety Bill in late April, and Governor Ritter signed the bill just two weeks later. The bill will go into effect Aug. 5. Bicycle Colorado now is working with statewide law enforcement training groups to make sure officers get details on the new law and with the Department of Revenue to update the Colorado Driver’s Manual. “Bicycle Colorado is heading our state’s movement to gain equal treatment for bicyclists,” said Dan Grunig, executive director. “This bill takes a big step toward improving safety for everyone on Colorado roads.” Story continued on Page 4

Bikes Rally for Stimulus Funding
A
t the beginning of the federal stimulus bill discussion, the Colorado Department of Transportation released a list of potential projects. Other than a couple of sidewalks and shoulders on roads, bicycle projects were alarmingly absent. Bicycle Colorado immediately weighed in, participating in several CDOT meetings and providing lists of readyto-go bicycle projects around the state. We then coordinated with local advocates to convey bike needs at regional meetings. Our combined efforts resulted in over $10 million of bicycle projects to receive funding to be built.
