Editor's Note Hello beautiful people and welcome back! This is our 3rd issue - The Summer Issue, and we are thrilled how far we’ve made it, with you by our side. So thank you for sticking with us! This issue puts the spotlight on summer destinations, and the main featured destination is CALIFORNIA. If you know me, you know how much I LOVE CALIFORNIA. Yes, that’s me behind the hashtag #ILoveCalifornia. The diverse landscape, the Mediteranean vibe, the architecture, the weather, the coastal breeze and the incredible sunsets hugging the ocean - I love it all. And I wanna share with you all my deeply felt love for California specifically coastal California. Summers are lovely in The Hamptons New Yorkers (and not only) have been stuck inside their apartments for more than a year due to Covid-19. This luxury resort laying on a 44-acre, private-island St. Regis Bora Bora, features the largest overwater and beach bungalow villas in the South Pacific, each with a terrace and gazebo and some featuring Jacuzzis and/or private pools. The charter company has released new images of their soon-to-launch ultimate luxury houseboat; a four-bedroom floating presidential suite with a 360-degree rooftop lounge that will give guests the opportunity to take in the stunningly beautiful nature of The Islands of Tahiti.

The first floating villa in Bora Bora will be able to accommodate up to eight guests with its 120 square metres large area across two levels and is decked out with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a fully-equipped kitchen, dining area and a rooftop with breathtaking views surrounding the boat at all angles.

With the environment of Tahiti in mind, it has been inspired by ‘ancient Polynesian voyaging canoes’ and is eco-friendly by running on solar power. The absence of a diesel engine makes it silent, and also helps to keep coral and other marine life calm and comfortable. It has its own water treatment facility to reuse water and only has a thermal generator for emergencies. It was also designed and built in a local shipyard, which ensure that the carbon footprint is next to nil. A stay on the yet-to-be-named houseboat gives travellers the opportunity of exploring the little slice of paradise that

Moorea - the location of this year's best underwater photo The increasingly popular microdestination of Moorea in The Islands of Tahiti was recently brought forward into the light due to the winning entry of the Underwater Photographer of the Year 2021 competition. The image named Sharks’ Skylight was taken in the calm shallows of Moorea during the vibrant sunset, capturing the mesmerising world underwater.

Moorea, the heart-shaped sister island to Tahiti is a natural playground for divers who instantly fall in love with the varied coral reef eco-system and the colourful mix of marine life. The photographer Renee Capozzola said she is hoping that her winning entry will encourage people to promote the conservation of shark species threatened with extinction around the world. As there’s a strong legal protection for sharks in French Polynesia and there are several shark nurseries in the destination, it allows for them to thrive and balance the marine ecosystem. An idyllic island of The Islands of Tahiti, Moorea is the pride and joy of French Polynesia and is a true reflection of the laid back Tahitian lifestyle and the warm welcoming character of the Polynesian people.

Welcome to Nantucket

Nantucket Island, located just 30 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, feels like its own little world. An ideal one, where the beaches are always perfectly windswept, the lighthouses are straight out of a postcard, and life goes at a slower pace. Could it be “the best island in the world”? National Geographic said it was. Did you know you don’t even need a car on Nantucket? It’s too charming for cars! You can just take the ferry over and ride a bike, with a little bell and a basket. Swimming, surfing, boutique shopping, fishing, and dining on fresh seafood are all glorious ways to spend a day, or a week, here. Leave your tents at home, though. It’s hard to bike with one and camping’s not allowed on the island.

One of our most favorite hotels in Nantucket is While Elephant. Originally a collection of rustic cottages, White Elephant has graced Nantucket's waterfront since the 1920s. Today, the landmark resort features luxurious rooms, suites, residences, garden cottages and downtown lofts, as well as an acclaimed restaurant and fun vacation activities for the whole family. For almost a century, the breathtaking White Elephant has been the talk of the town and a prominent piece of Nantucket history making it one of the finest harborside hotels on Nantucket Island.

The White Elephant has graced Nantucket's waterfront since the 1920's. Originally a collection of rustic cottages, the hotel was the dream of a prominent Nantucket socialite, Elizabeth T. Ludwig. She believed that the property would, one day, be a fine harborside hotel. Her pet project became the talk of the town, known affectionately as "Mrs. Ludwig's white elephant" - a witty name that stuck. The 32-room property is housed in the former Bradley Park Hotel – originally constructed in 1924 as one of the first resorts on Palm Beach's Main Street. During its century-long history, it was initially owned by Colonel Edward R. Bradley, who ran a private and celebrated Beach Club casino on land that is today Bradley Park. For more than 20 years, the hotel served as a magnet for business tycoons and high rollers who frequented the salon. Over the decades that followed, the hotel remained a mainstay for seasonal visitors. In 1980, in part to its architectural significance, the hotel was the bones and rebuilt last year. The hotel stands one street north of Royal Poinciana Way, Palm Beach’s original Main Street, less than two blocks from the Atlantic Ocean and one block from the Intracoastal Waterway. White Elephant Palm Beach is adjacent to Bradley Park, which serves as a grand lawn to the hotel, and is less than a half mile from the newly redeveloped Royal Poinciana Plaza shopping complex.

The layout of the property takes advantage of the South Florida sunshine and features a U-shaped outdoor courtyard that is the social heart of the hotel – a place to relax and recharge, whether lounging on the patio or around the pool. The landscaping features mature, local flora whose lush colors and tropical fragrances envelop guests. Previews of the property started earlier this year, when White Elephant Palm Beach’s signature restaurant Lola 41 – a Nantucket staple – began serving its globally-inspired dishes and local seafood specialties.

White Elephant Palm Beach maintains the welcoming feel of a private residence with 13 rooms and 19 suites spread across four stories. The design captures the spirit of a grand home while maintaining the ambiance of a landmarked boutique hotel. Breaking from the bright pinks and greens that dominate the Palm Beach aesthetic, the White Elephant Palm Beach features a neutral color palette with sleek metal accents and vibrant pops of color. The hardwood floors, Carrara marble, elegant tiles and woven rugs are all interpreted with contemporary style. Outside, the Mizner-style facade is painted a light, creamy-white color with classic blackand-white striped awnings, terracotta roof tiles, and black trim to bring a fresh, sophisticated look to the classic structure. Guests are welcomed onto the property by a seven-foot white elephant statue by Santa Fe-based artist Fredrick Prescott. (A “sister” elephant statue, Trunket, is on the grounds of White Elephant in Nantucket.)

The statue is just one of 120 original pieces of colorful modern and pop art personally curated by the owners and Elkus Manfredi. The museum-worthy collection is on display throughout the rooms and common spaces. Featured artists include Robert Rauschenberg, whose early creations in the 1950s anticipated the pop art movement, and Jennifer Bartlett, known for her small, square steel plates that are combined in grid formations to create large-scale works. Several pieces by painter Kenzo Okada, the first Japanese-American artist to receive international acclaim using abstract expressionist style, are on display, as are works by Donald Baechler, part of the East Village, New York 1980s art movement. A 54-inch round acrylic work by Orit Fuchs was specifically created for the hotel and is a focal point of the lobby; while six prints by Yinka Shonibare, who will unveil a new public sculpture installation in West Palm Beach in 2021, can be found on the second-floor corridor. Doodle Boy, a 10year-old British artist, was also commissioned to create 30 exclusive pieces for the powder rooms. Using clean black lines hand drawn with a thick marker, he incorporated a hidden signature elephant in each of his drawings.

Guestrooms and suites range from 510- to 3,000-square feet featuring custom-designed furniture. King-size beds are outfitted with Pratesi linens with upholstered backboards accented in a colorful palm and flower print. The same fabric is found on the back of the desk chairs and on the throw pillow piping. Other noteworthy pieces include console tables by Selamat Designs in collaboration with the heritage brand, Morris & Co, which are wrapped inside and out with authentic William Morris "Strawberry Thief" covering. The pattern was originally created in 1883. Each of the suites are furnished with plush grey and cream armchairs and couches. The custom-designed wooden arches that frame the entrance to some of the rooms are a defining architectural element of the hotel. Other decorative accents such as bronze elephant door knockers, bold patterned throw pillows, rattan ceiling light fixtures, and black and white striped side tables are sprinkled throughout. The bathrooms feature marble tiles, double sinks crafted from stone, a dry vanity and glass-enclosed walk-in showers with L'Occitane bath amenities. Rates start at $650 for a guest room and $995 for a suite.

The two penthouse suites are ideal for those who want to entertain, with large living rooms, fully equipped kitchens, and terraces ranging between 800- to 1,200-square-feet. With views of Bradley Park, the Park Suite is a threebedroom that can be expanded into four, and the oceanfacing Palm Suite is a two-bedroom that can be expanded into three. Among other amenities, guests enjoy complimentary use of Priority Bicycles and Radio Flyer Wagons as well as exclusive access to Barton & Gray yachts for excursions. White Elephant Palm Beach has also partnered with BMW. Guests can be chauffeured into town in a 7 Series; and the remainder of the fleet are available for guests to sign out for a few hours on a first-come, first-serve basis. It was then claimed by the Spanish Empire as part of Alta California in the larger territory of New Spain. Alta California became a part of Mexico in 1821 following its successful war for

independence, but was ceded to the United States in 1848 after the Mexican–American War. The western portion of Alta California was organised as the State of California, which was admitted as the 31st state on September 9, 1850. The California Gold Rush starting in 1848 led to dramatic social and demographic changes..

A place of contrasts and diverse terrain, California has it all: hundreds of miles of beaches, deserts and mountains, towering redwood forests, in addition to incredible, diverse cities, idyllic towns, surfing villages, thrilling theme parks, and so much more. California is the only state where you can literally drive through desert, mountains, and along the coastline, all in one single day/ we don’t recommend that, because it’s so much to explore, but if you’re in a rush, you can do that. If you’ve never been to California, keep reading, because it’s so much more than just Hollywood, wineries and gorgeous beaches. From the Mexican border to its northern good neighbor, the beautiful state of Oregon, California has everything. From big, cosmopolitan cities to small towns and everything in between, the state of California is very generous in rich, fabulous views wherever you turn your head. 163,695 square miles of breathtaking beaches, mountains, redwood forests, colorful wildflower fields, desert and iconic beaches, (840 miles of coastline to be more precise). You have the Pacific Coast contouring the West side of the state, while the Sierra Nevada, with its three National Parks, covering the most eastern side; and even more rugged ocean and lots of national parks on the northwest side of California. The Golden State has also the highest and lowest points in the U.S. with Mount Whitney as the highest, and DeathValley the lowest, registering the coldest winter nights.

California is the third largest state in the U.S., and it’s divided into 2 main regions: Southern California/ or SoCal and Northern California/ or NorCal. But there is a 3rd region in between, and probably the best one, the Central Coast, contouring the Pacific Coast. Is it getting confusing already? Ok, so let’s dive into it. Basically, we have SoCal, (which begins from the Mexican border, including San Diego, Disneyland, Los Angeles with all its Hollywoodian attractions, movie studios, the beautiful golden beaches of Santa Monica & Malibu/ where the stars live). Then we have the Central Coast, (from Santa Barbara & the vicinities, going up North towards Big Sur, including San Luis Obisbo, Morro Bay, San Simeon, Lucia, Monterey & Carmel). NorCal which includes Santa Cruz, San Francisco & the Bay Area with pretty towns like Sausalito. Deep North on the Pacific Coast is home to lots of state forests and pretty coastal towns like Mendocino/ one of the most Nordic towns of NorCal actually. Then when you turn East, going inland, there is Napa Valley & Sonoma County, Sacramento, Tahoe, national parks like Sequoias & Yosemite, and so much more). The weather is very pleasant all year round in most of California, Mediterranean climate - hot and dry summers, and very mild winters, (or no winter at all for most of California). There are no actual 4 seasons in California. The South is almost always warm and sunny; the North has cooler temperatures, with an overcast tendency and foggy days during the summer.

Pacific Highway 101 is one of the best road trips you can ever dream of - 1,650-mile (2,655 km) of scenic views, contouring the West Coast of the United States of America. It goes from the northwest tip of the US at Port Townsend in Seattle, all the way down to Dana Point in Southern California, crossing all the three western American states - California, Oregon and Seattle. In this article we’ll only cover the CA portion, which is considered by many the best road trip in the US, and one of the best in the world. But hey, if you’re a big adventurer and you have all the time in the world, a road trip along the whole Pacific Coast route is a must! Ok, back to our sunny California. First of all, let’s get some facts straight. California’s coast line is 865 miles long. California’s Pacific Coast Highway is 656 miles long, and it goes from Dana Point (Orange County) all the way to Leggett (Mendocino County). If you just wanna drive the Pacific Highway 1 from San Francisco to Los Angeles, that is 480 miles and it takes about ten hours if you were to go straight, without stopping, but why would you? Please don’t! Take your time to enjoy this amazing trip. Again, this is one of the best road trips in the whole world, for God’s sake! TAKE YOUR TIME! At least a week or two, if you wanna do the full Pacific Highway and explore the major cities - San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Monterey, Carmel, San Luis Obisbo, Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) is a marvel of human effort that covers most of California’s beautiful coastlines. Work on the legendary PCH started first in 1912, but really got rolling in the 1930’s. By the time the construction was completed, (in the 1950’s), it opened possibilities for people to travel from South to North, the travel industry boomed in this heavenly piece of earth, and the concept of road tripping came fully to life. ldv-voyage.com 47

What is so special that you need so much time on this road trip? Well, besides the breathtaking coastal views, this road winds around huge national parks, through giant redwoods, past cute little towns and villages you’ve never heard of, but you’ll remember them forever. You need to stop from time to time, (you’ll be tempted to stop every 5, 10 min), get out of the car and take in the beauty of this place and explore it on foot. Go hiking, camping, glamping, wine tasting, surfing, or just chill by the beach and observe the marine mammals and Californian condors. No matter if you’re an active, outdoorsy expert or a quiet traveler who just likes to chill and take great photos, you’ll have the best time of your life on this road trip! GUARANTEED! Btw, this famous route has many different names, depending on which section you’re talking about. For example there is State Route 1—or Highway 1; the southern part of the road is Pacific Coast Highway (or PCH), while the northern section is known as Shoreline Highway. There is also Cabrillo Highway, Coast Highway, Pacific Coast Highway, and other denominations, but we should probably stop here before it gets too confusing, and let’s go back to our trip. So you can just do San Francisco - Los Angeles if you only have a week. But if you don’t wanna miss all the gems in NorCal, we highly recommend you do the whole Pacific Coast Highway, (or whatever you wanna call it), and give yourself at least 10 days/ ideally two weeks, so you can fully explore everything. The best way to do this is to drive southward, so you’ll be on the ocean side of the road, which offers better views and easier access to vista points; (keep in mind there are hundreds of vista points, and all of them are on the ocean side). So let’s get it started!

If you care for tradition you should begin your trip with a drive through the famous Chandelier DriveThru Tree in Leggett in Mendocino County, (seen in the picture); then turn on Highway 1 (this portion is inland, and goes through some of the tallest trees), until a point when you’ll see the ocean and the name of the road becomes Shoreline Highway! Hello, are you already confused? Don’t be! You’re on the right path! This is Pacific Coast Highway, and your trip has just begun. Now keep going and enjoy the overwhelmingly beautiful landscape.

You’ll soon come across Mendocino, (about 50 miles from where you started) and you should hang out a little bit in this cute little town. The Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens it's worth a visit. You’ll see the most beautiful dahlias and roses. You might actually wanna book a room somewhere and spend the night, so you have some time to explore the place. A mecca for artists and writers, Mendocino was originally established as a logging port in the 1850s. Also called “Spendocino”, it is largely an upscale vacation place for visitors from San Francisco and vicinities. And for the New England lovers, this is the closest you’ll get on the West coast! Enjoy the whole afternoon in this quaint coastal town, have a nice quiet dinner at… and in the morning get back on the road. Head towards San Francisco, which is 190 miles of coastal road, so it’ll take 4-6 hours to reach your destination. Take your time and enjoy the road. It is beautiful. You should consider at least 3, 4 days to explore San Francisco; if you wanna explore its vicinity then you’ll need a week. Small towns like Sausalito and Tiburon (also called Italy of the west coast), are a must see! When you visit Tiburon, you gotta take the ferry across the bay and enjoy a hike to Mt. Livermore, then spend some quality time at the Lyford House if you’re into all things art & culture. In Sausalito make sure you dine at one of their world-class restaurants with a spectacular view. If you wanna spend the night here, (which means money is not a problem for you), you should go for the top of the line hotel and book a room at the Inn Above Tide. Go big or go home, right?

San Francisco is a diverse, multi-cultural city, filled with lush settings, which makes it an incredible place for nature lovers, shoppers, foodies, artists, bookworms, techies, and more. Once you get here you should get rid of your car (if it’s a rental), and explore San Francisco on foot, and just Uber around for longer distances. You can rent another car in a few days, when you hit the road again. (Or you can get rid of the car after you cross the Golden Gate, which is 1.7 mile-long). While there is A LOT to do & to see in San Francisco, if you’re there for only 3, 4 days, here are a few must do’s: start by crossing the 1.7 mile-long Golden Gate, (by foot or by bike) , and then explore its 1,000+ acres of park; you should also book a seaplane tour to see the Golden Gate Bridge from above. Also ride a cable car, walk down the famous twisty Lombard Street, go to Chinatown, (the oldest in the country), explore the Embarcadero and Fisherman’s Wharf - and get an ice cream sundae at Ghirardelli. For amazing views go to Twin Peaks or the top of Coit Tower, and make sure to check out the Painted Ladies, also known as the “Full House.” For nightlife and dining, get lost into the Mission district, and enjoy all that San Francisco has to offer. San Francisco is huge in culture, arts and live music, but if you wanna explore that aspect, then you’ll need a whole week, or just come back another time. You’ll need half a day only for The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), and there are so many other great museums to explore. Then also, how can you miss a trip to America’s most notorious prison? If you’ve come this far, Alcatraz is a must! And so is a day-trip to the wine country north of the Golden Gate Bridge. To do it all you might need a whole week. Or just pick and choose, depending on how much time you wanna spend in San Francisco, and just come back later and to the rest. Don’t stress yourself out, and enjoy your trip! Not even the locals haven't seen & done everything. Now get in the car and jump back on the road. There is so much more to do and see!

Sausalito

Capitola As you head South on the Pacific Coast Highway, this part of the road has the most beautiful, scenic views, so hit the road early in the morning, because you’ll need to stop your car more often than you’d expect. As you drive through this dramatic coastal landscape contoured by mountains on the other side of the road, on your way to Big Sur you’ll cross a few amazing coastal villages & towns. Santa Cruz, Monterey and Carmel are towns you wanna park your car and explore on foot, so book a room in advance for each location and spend a full day & night. Santa Cruz is a friendly beach town with old-fashioned roller coasters, vintage shops and organic restaurants, amazing coastal views and redwood trees, and so much more. (For the film lovers - did you know the '80s classic “The Lost Boys" was shot here?). Just a few minutes south of Santa Cruz you’ll find Capitola, California’s oldest seaside resort town, and boasts a Mediterranean flavor. You’ve seen this place in postcards. It’s famous for its colorful houses facing the beach. Go for a stroll and a few pictures for your Instagram, and head back on the road.

Monterey is about an hour and a half away. On your drive you’ll pass by Monterey Bay - a national marine sanctuary, where you can see Orcas and blue whales, sea otters, sea lions, white sharks and different kinds of dolphins, and more other sea creatures. Once you’re in Monterey, please take some time to explore it. You might wanna book 2 nights here, because there is a plethora of things to do and see between Monterey and its good neighbour Carmel. From wine tasting, dining, and shopping to outdoor activities, everything is within a 30-minute drive the most, so you’ll be able to use your time efficiently. Start by exploring Cannery Row, Old Fisherman’s Wharf, and if you want more sea creatures visit the Monterey Bay Aquarium at the end of Cannery Row. You can’t miss 17-Mile Drive & Pebble Beach! These 2 are a must!

And then Carmel… Oh, Carmel… This is heaven on Earth. You’ll feel great about each one of these places, but Carmel is really something else. Even though small in size, this idyllic town has everything - from stunning coastline with crescent-shaped beach and windswept trees, equally charming inland - see Carmel Valley, (just 13 miles from the coast), fantastic wine, lots of art, beautiful architecture with a subtle European feel and lots of things to do. The city was founded in 1904 as an art colony, (if you’re wondering why there are so many art galleries. Just in downtown Carmel there are about 75 galleries in only one square mile. Wow, right? This idyllic town nestled on the northern part of California’s central coastline has so much to offer you wanna spend a couple of days here too. You also need to go for a drive up in Carmel Highlands, and get in the most spectacular views. Some fun facts about beautiful Carmel: Remember Basic Instinct starring Michael Douglas and Sharon Stone as the crime novelist Catherine Tramell? Remember her house and those breathtaking views of the Pacific Coast from her terrace? That property is actually in Carmel Highlands, (not Stinson Beach, as they say in the movie), and it costs a fortune. I got another one: did you know that Oscar winning actor/ filmmaker Clint Eastwood was the Mayor of Carmel in the 80’s? (from 1986-1988 if you wanna be precise)

Ok, ok, now let’s get to the best part of this whole trip: BIG SUR! The Central Coast, especially the Big Sur area, has some of the most jaw-dropping scenery. Located on California's central coast, between Carmel and the small town of San Simeon, (home to the fabulous Hearst Castle), Big Sur offers some 90 miles of pristine beauty dominated by rugged beaches, redwoods and waterfalls. Every inch of it is overloaded with postcard appeal. Also known as the American Riviera, with incredible nature, small, quaint inns and large, luxury resorts, the classic drive through the windy roads of Big Sur on State Route 1 with a convertible car is a road trip you’ll never forget. Along the CA-1 there are lots of vista points, (there is literally one every 5, 10 minutes), and you’ll find that every stop seems more amazing than the last on the Big Sur coast. Big Sur is home to 9 state parks, incredible hiking trails, (many of them for intermediate and advanced hikers), secluded beaches and waterfalls, (Pfeiffer Beach is a must see, and so is the 80-feet tall McWay Falls. Btw, like all the good things, Pfeiffer Beach is a gem very well hidden, so if you don’t wanna miss it pay maximum and attention and turn right onto Sycamore road before the Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge). Obviously, there is no way to drive through or out of Big Sur without crossing the famous Bixby Creek Bridge. The 714-feet-long bridge is 120 miles south of San Francisco and 13 miles south of Carmel, in Monterey County along State Route 1. You’ve seen it in so many movies and car commercials, and you definitely have to see it in real life. Reality beats the movies! Back in the days, many starving artists who couldn’t afford to live in San Francisco, they moved to Big Sur & the Carmel Highlands, which were far more inexpensive than today. Henry Miller was one of them, calling Big Sur home for 15 years, and his house is now a memorial library. Here he wrote the autobiographical novel Big Sur and the Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch, (first published in 1957), his love letter for this beautiful place. But after the highway was completed in 1937, the area became more desirable, hotels were built, and things changed in this paradisiac land. Now you’ll pay hundreds of dollars per night, (or even thousands, if you wanna go big). However, Big Sur remains mostly an artsy, rural community, offering untamed wilderness and simple pleasures to its visitors. In an effort to conserve its beautiful nature, there are only a few lodging options and restaurants, no supermarkets, and only 3 gas stations in the whole area; (and you can only imagine the price of the gas). So make sure you stop and fill up somewhere in San Simeon/ or Monterey, if you’re heading South on Route 1 from San Francisco. Big Sur has been home to artists and writers for more than a century. There is something about this wild, mystical beauty that’s fueling creativity

What to do in Big Sur Big Sur is an absolute nirvana for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, photographers, hikers and campers, and anyone who’s looking for majestic nature and unforgettable experiences. You can go hiking, camping, beachcombing, watching migrating whales, sea otters and endangered California condors, (the largest birds in North America). You also must go visit Henry Miller’s house, (which now is a memorial library & a bookstore). Have a bite on the lofty patio at Nepenthe and take in the breathtaking views. Another great place for a bite & some local art is Coast Big Sur. Make sure you stop by for coffee and lunch on the terrace while gazing out at the ocean, and check their art gallery inside. This place is a truly unique destination for fine art lovers, one-of-a-kind gifts and elevated casual cuisine.

Where to stay in Big Sur Lodging options are limited and very pricey here. Options range from campground, inns and rustic cabins, to a couple of luxury resorts where rooms are thousands of dollars a night. Check out the Big Sur’s website for more on lodging. Our favorite place to stay here is the Deetjen's Inn. Tuckedaway on the edge of a redwood forest, this cozy inn has been welcoming guests since 1930. The property was built by Helmuth Deetjen and his wife Helen, using traditional Norwegian techniques. The inn is now on the U.S’s National Register of Historic Places. We also love Ragged Point Inn and Resort because of its exceptional location right by the ocean. Rooms start at $239/ night, and the views are breathtaking. Another incredible place is Esalen Hot Springs if you are into yoga and meditation. This retreat has hot springs with jaw-dropping views, so just soak in the mineralrich waters and contemplate the beauty around you. You’ll reach a zen state of mind as soon as you put your foot inside this place. If you drive from LA and need a break, the best place to stop for a night is at the Cavalier Oceanfront Resort, the only oceanfront resort in San Simeon and Cambria. This is the ideal stopover for travelers exploring the California coast: just three miles from Hearst Castle, seven miles from the Elephant Seal Habitat (Rookery), and 10 miles from the Piedras Blancas Lighthouse. Rooms start at $289/ night, and depending on when you plan your trip, the price can be double or even triple. If money is not a problem and you wanna experience top of the line, then you might wanna stay at Post Ranch Inn, (rooms range from $1,500 to 2,000), or Ventana, (where a room is approximately $3,500 - 4,000/ night. When to visit Big Sur Weather in Big Sur is mostly sunny and chilly, so it's best to pack a jacket and a couple of sweaters any time of year you plan to visit. Summer days are warm and pleasant, with foggy mornings and chilly evenings. But this is the most expensive time to travel, so if you’re on a budget you might wanna hold ‘til late September, October. The weather is still nice, summer crowds start to disperse, and lodging prices go significantly down. Winter is the best time to visit Big Sur if you’re looking to snag a deal on lodging. But this is when it rains a lot in Big Sur, and often the roads are closed, so you might end up locked inside the hotel most of the time. Spring is when Big Sur is blooming, figuratively and literally, so if you’re into beautiful wildflowers this is the best time for you. Back on the road, heading South towards Pismo Beach, (120 miles from Big Sur), you’ll notice a dramatic change of scenery as soon as you’re out of the Big Sur area. The rugged beaches with mountains in the background are substituted with a more relaxed landscape, and you’ll notice a few degrees warmer… On your way, you’ll cross Cambria, Santa Lucia and San Simeon, (the latter being home of Hearst Castle, conceived by the publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst. The opulent castle includes 165 rooms on 127 acres, with numerous pools, fountains and lavish gardens).

Next is Morro Bay. You can’t miss the gigantic Morro Rock in the middle of the ocean. No worries, you’ll notice it from your car. Now stop your car, rent some kayaks and spend a couple of hours in this cute little place. The bay surrounds a busy commercial fishing harbor a half mile west of the highway, so whenever you’re ready to hit the road, you’re already there.

Next stop - San Luis Obisbo, a super cute town with a beautiful 18th-century Spanish mission to tour. The town is only 15 minutes from the beach and provides easy access to a ton of gems up and down the coast. Here you can stay at Madonna Inn, one of the quirkiest places to spend a night. A little further inland is Paso Roble, another California wine-hotspot. Part of San Luis Obispo County, this vibrant little town is a good excuse for a detour off Highway 1. The downtown area of Paso provides great eateries and plenty of cute cafes to refuel on coffee and snacks backup for the road.

Next, on your way to Santa Barbara you’ll pass through a few less known towns, but absolutely worthy stopovers. Santa Ynez Valley is one of them. More wine, anyone? The valley is known for their cabernet, merlot and pinot noir. You can’t skip the cute Danish village, Solvang, founded in 1911 by Danish pioneers, and grab some delicious Danish pastries. Then there is Los Olivos, and even more wine! Back on the road heading towards the ocean, and shortly you’ll reach Santa Barbara, the quintessential Californian beach city with beautiful ocean views contoured by tall skinny palm trees, and the Santa Ynez mountains creating a dramatic backdrop. Known as the “American Riviera, Santa Barbara is perfectly located in the southern part of California’s Central Coast, nestled between the Santa Ynez mountains and Pacific Ocean. The intersection of classic and modern, far but close enough from the hustle and bustle of the busy L.A., (which is only about 100 miles away), Santa Barbara manages to keep its characteristic chilled vibe intact, while up-and-coming neighborhoods like the Funk Zone, and a reflux of young crowds and students make the town cooler and more vibrant than ever.

From picture-perfect beaches to incredible architecture, rich arts and culture scene, historical sights, museums, some of the best hotels and restaurants on the West Coast, and lots of good wine, you’ll love EVERYTHING Santa Barbara has to offer. It is well known that CA has some of the priciest real estate in the nation, and Santa Barbara is somewhere at the top of the list, being home to some of the biggest celebrities on the planet, including Oprah, Ellen, and most recently the Duke and Duchess of Sussex - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. As you exit Santa Barbara city, you’ll pass through a few more quaint little towns you’ve probably never heard of before, but you’ll remember them forever: Goleta, Summerland and Carpinteria, (which are still part of Barbara county).

After Ventura, CA-1 heads inland and merges with Highway 101. If you stay on 101, as you’re getting closer to the City of Angels, (70 miles away), you’ll soon experience LA traffic first hand. If you wanna get back on the coast, you’ll soon come across signs pointing towards Highway-1, (our famous Pacific Coast Highway). Take the turn, drive 15 min on Highway-1 inland, and after Point Mogu you’ll be back driving by the ocean. You’ll now notice the contrast between the northern rugged beaches towered by the mountains and enchanting Redwood forests, versus the warm, chilled southern beaches lined with palm trees.

When you get to Malibu, pull over at Point Dume State Beach and enjoy the warm SoCal sunshine. Here expect to spot whales, dolphins, sea lions and harbor seals sharing the ocean with surfers with blond hair and Baywatch bodies. Enjoy the sunset by the beach or dine at the fancy Nobu; (chances are you’ll be sitting across from an A-Lister; or more than one). Lodging options are pretty limited in Malibu, (and very pricey), so you might wanna book a night at one of the many beautiful hotels in Santa Monica. That way in the morning you can go for a jog by the beach and explore the historic Santa Monica Pier. Then head inland towards LA, where you can sample the city’s limitless choices of landmarks, movie studios, hip bars and restaurants, some of the fanciest hotels and lots of museums. Of course you won’t have time to fully explore any of that, so just don’t stress out driving to too many places, (you’ll find yourself spending more time in the car than outside), and just chill for a couple of days in the city of angels, and plan a separate trip to LA. Best choice would be to book a room for a couple of nights in a chique boutique hotel in centrally located West Hollywood, so you’re close to all the good bars and restaurants, close to Hollywood, so you can go the next day on a stroll on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and spot your favorite stars on the sidewalk; (there are about 2,700 stars all together, so don’t try to take a picture with each one of them). Then go for a (window) shopping session on Rodeo Drive, have a drink at The Beverly Wilshire, (or even book a room; they offer a Pretty Woman package, if you wanna go for the full experience).

Love it or hate it, Los Angeles is an incredible city overall, very diverse and full of life, always making the headlines one way or another. So while you don’t have much time to explore it on this trip, you’ll definitely wanna come back. Now continuing your coastal trip, the Southernmost part of Pacific Coast Highway has the most idyllic beaches in SoCal. The PCH ends after Dana Point, a small city in Orange County, nestled on a cliffside, halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Finish your trip in Laguna Beach, a perfect-postcard beach town Mother nature was incredibly generous with. Explore its pristine coastline which consists of more than 30 coves and beaches spread across 7 miles, book a whale-watching cruise, and on your way back explore some of the city's rich arts & culture scene. And there you have it, the Californian Pacific Coast, from North to South. Whether you decide to do the whole ride in one long shot, or break it into a couple of separate trips, it’s safe to end this long article with the same idea we started with: the PCH is one of the best road trips in the world. 60 ldv-voyage.com

What to cook

Ingredients: 5 g salt 1 kg tomatoes 1 red pepper 2 garlic cloves 300 ml water 80g dry bread 4 pcs red shrimp 40 ml jerez vinegar 150 ml extra virgin olive oil 1 English cucumber, (peeled)

Instructions:

Put everything together in a blender, (except the red shrimp) and start blending at low speed for 30 sec. Add evoo on the shrimp, salt, pepper and grill for 2 min on each side , then chop big pieces and put on the side. Leave the gazpacho in the fridge overnight to get cold and the flavours to mix. Serve next day: in a bowl (cold, from the freezer), add 10 oz of gazpacho, some evvo and the red shrimp.

Ingredients: 20 small size bamboo skewers 1 cantaloupe melon 1 honeydew melon 2 bunches of arugula 20 slices of prosciutto 300 gm of stilton cheese

( makes 20)

Instructions: Cut both melons in half. Remove seeds. Using a melon baller, scoop melon balls from both melons, place in a bowl. Cut 20 prosciutto slices in 3 even size pieces. Cut cheese into cube size pieces.

To assemble: Starting with a cantaloupe ball onto the skewer, then add one arugula leaf , then a cube of cheese, next prosciutto, then a honeydew melon ball, next Arugula leaf, then prosciutto and finally another cantaloupe ball, if you appear to be running short on any of these ingredients , feel free to play around with the order of the ingredients.

(4 serves) Ingredients: 12 raw jumbo shrimp ( peeled and deveined ) 3 tablespoons of olive oil Sea salt and cracked pepper to taste 6 zucchini peeled in lengthwise slices 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil ( Fresh thyme leaves or microgreens for garnish)

Ingredients for Pistachio Pesto Sauce: 1 cup of shelled pistachio nuts 1 tsp of sea salt 1 tsp of cracked pepper Juice of 1 lemon 3/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil 1 cup of fresh grated aged parmesan cheese 1 clove of minced garlic 2 cups of Italian flat leaf parsley 1/2 cup of fresh basil leaves

Instructions for Pistachio Pesto Sauce: Place a small non-stick fry pan on medium heat, drizzle a little olive oil in the pan, add garlic, stir for 2 minutes. Remove from heat. Place the following into a food processor, garlic 3/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil, salt and pepper to taste, juice of 1 lemon, grated cheese, basil leaves and parsley and pistachio nuts. Pulse till mix has an even texture. Place in a sealed container, and place to one side. Place a non-stick fry pan on a medium/high heat, add vegetable oil, in small batches toss zucchini ribbons for 2-3 minutes ( you are basically flash searing them), once complete, drain on a paper towel and set to one side. Place a non-stick fry pan on a medium/ high heat, drizzle with olive oil, enough to coat the bottom of the pan. Add in the shrimp and season with a pinch of salt and pepper, gently toss and turn shrimp till they become pink all over, 3 -4 minutes approx. Remove from heat. Separate pesto mix into 2 medium size bowls, in one bowl toss gently the zucchini ribbons and in the other bowl, toss the shrimp. ( save a small amount of pesto to drizzle on each plate) Assemble: Even on each plate place a mound of the zucchini , then add 3 shrimp on the top of each mound, Drizzle a small amount of pesto sauce on each of the plates. Sprinkle with either fresh thyme leaves or micro greens.

Ingredients: (MANGO SORBET)

6 medium size mangoes, peeled and diced 3/4 cup of honey Juice of 1 lime 1 cup of water

Instructions: Place cubed mangoes into a food processor, add water, honey and lime juice, puree till you see a smooth consistency. Place into your ice cream maker and follow their instructions.

Ingredients Caramelized Banana Springrolls 12 fresh ( refrigerated) spring roll wrappers 1/3 cup of vegetable oil 1/2 cup of dark brown sugar 1/3 cup of dark rum 1 tsp of cinnamon powder 1 tablespoon of vanilla paste or extract 1/2 cup of unsalted butter 4 medium size bananas, (cut into approx 1 inch size pieces) ( powdered sugar for dusting) Small bowl of water.

Instructions: Place a medium size non-stick fry pan on a medium/high heat, add butter, vanilla, sugar, cinnamon and rum, and stir to combine ingredients. Place banana pieces into the pan. Stir ingredients, allow to simmer for 6 -8 minutes or until the bananas have slightly softened and the mixture has thickened. Remove from heat, place mix in a bowl, allow to cool to room temperature.

Place 2 spring roll wrappers together and lay them on the surface diamond shaped. Place 11/2 tablespoon amount of mixture into the centre of the spring roll wrapper ( be careful not to add too much sauce), fold the centre points of the diamond into the middle, roll up the bottom diamond point to the centre, firmly but gently, then place a couple of drops of water on the top diamond point of the wrapper and firmly but gently fold to the centre, folding the wet flap down, turn over the spring roll fold side down on paper towel and continue the process till all 6 spring rolls are complete.

We had the honor of talking with the amazing Australian Chef Lisa Mead about her long, illustrious career, her cooking books and workshops, how she adapted her business to the Covid age, and we even got 3 of her most delicious dishes, (all available here on the magazine. With 26 years of experience aboard luxury yachts, serving up epicurean delights to royalty, heads of state and celebrities across the Meditteranean and the Caribbean, Lisa is considered one of the finest chefs in the world.

1.Hi Lisa! Please tell us a little about yourself. I am passionate about food and art, and based on my life to date, I think I probably have gypsy blood! I was born on the island of Penang (off Malaysia), and I have spent my years since visiting other islands around the world, primarily in my role as a luxury yacht chef. I am lucky enough to truly love what I do, and when I’m not cooking, I am creating paintings for clients and producing my line of lifestyle products @lisameaddesigns ( Instagram) 2. When/ how did you discover your love for cooking? I discovered my love for cooking when I lived in Singapore. As a child, we had a cook who had worked at the Chinese Consulate prior to working with us, and would create works of art on a plate! I loved helping her prep our meals, along with my mother, who was constantly experimenting with new types of cuisine. 3. What is your favorite cuisine? What about your favorite dish to prepare? If I had to pin it down, I would say Asian cuisine. That’s probably due to growing up in Asia, and I really feel like the flavours are like a party in my mouth! My favourite dish to prepare constantly changes, but for now, I am enjoying using traditional Caribbean recipes which is where I was based for the past 26 years prior to the pandemic. I am also incorporating Australian bush flavours, as I love using local ingredients from the area of wherever I am at the time. 66 ldv-voyage.com

4. We’ve all been affected by Covid-19 in various ways. How have your working days looked like in the past year? This may be an overused word now, but pivoting my career was key. One minute I was floating around the turquoise waters of the British Virgin Islands on the private yacht I was cheffing on, the next I was back in Brisbane. Last year was spent working with my PR team, Evil Twin PR, to build my brand here in Australia, and work on prepromotion of my upcoming cookbook Fine Dining Made Easy, Galley Gourmet With Chef Lisa Mead. I also set up cooking workshops in a fantastic commercial kitchen in Brisbane, which started as online classes when we were all locked down, and these have continued in addition to the in-person classes that are now possible. I’ve also launched Indulgence Day Sail yacht charters on the Gold Coast and Sydney Harbour, plus I created my own lifestyle label - Lisa Mead Designs. So a day in my life is currently very varied, and very busy! 5. You are set to launch bespoke day charter experiences in Sydney and Brisbane. Can you tell us a little about that? My Indulgence yacht charters are about a day of spoiling you and your friends and family on board a luxury motor yacht either at the Gold Coast or Sydney Harbour.. Born from knowing that many of us are craving that holiday feeling, the charters enable a feeling of escaping and

luxuriating on the water as if you’re on an overseas holiday. Guests have the opportunity to take part in a cooking workshop on board, or they can preorder catering. Guests also have the option of booking live jazz or classical musicians to perform, plus we can provide on board beauty spa treatments, such as massage, facials, pedicures the list goes on! 6. You also teach a lot of cooking classes and workshops. Can you tell us more about it? My cooking workshops are created together with my client and their group, so each class is bespoke. I ask a series of questions so that I am then able to create a teachable menu that has been tailor made to the tastes of my client and their group. I use locally sourced ingredients, and the classes are as hands on people are comfortable with, and are available for anyone from the age of 12 years.

7. Traveling and cooking. That sounds like a great combination. What was your favorite place to work in/ travel? I think one of my favourite places to travel and work would be the Iles des Sainte's, off Guadeloupe, which is part of the French West Indies. A small group of islands with minimal tourism, think cobbled streets, small guest houses, and freshly baked French pastries resting on the windowsill. The only form of transport for hire is mopeds, so provisioning for the yacht was always a bit of a balancing act! The islands are the perfect combination of Caribbean and French culture. 8. Who inspired your career the most? Any mentors? My Mum, plus Ah Moy, our cook in Singapore, and in more recent times, Curtis Stone! I feel a kindred spirit for his freestyle of cooking and his sense of adventure. 9. What advice would you give to someone who wants to start a career as a chef? Make sure you are truly passionate about food. The hours can be tough and it's physically hard work, but if you are truly passionate, then those things can be put into perspective. On the plus side, the sky's the limit for how you choose to approach your cheffing career, whether you choose to base yourself in one location, like I am
