A GRAMMAR OF PRESENCE IN LIEU OF A FOREWORD

GRAMATYKA OBECNOŚCI ZAMIAST WSTĘPU

A philosopher, a lover, a keen observer of the world and a seeker of hope, a witty ironist, and a tender lampooner – these are only some of the faces of Aleksander Rozenfeld that we will encounter in his poignant, lifelong report on the human condition. And no matter in what role this extraordinary artist appears, his eyes, always sparkling with a mischievous flicker, regard us with love. The poet does not chastise us for our weaknesses, he does not rend his garments over our shortcomings, he does not conjure up any apocalyptic visions of man.

Instead, he practices compassion. He understands the condition of man-in-media-res perfectly well, sympathizing with mankind endlessly suspended between hope and despair, struggle and resignation, love and hatred. The poet observes our everyday plight with an empathy forged in pain, shaped by whirlwinds of history, and tempered in his profound need to find a place in the world that he would call his own – both metaphorically and literally. Rozenfeld’s perception of the universe has evolved in the course of his lifelong search for an antidote to the trauma inflicted on him by two criminal regimes, to exile, to years of wandering. Although it is tinged with distrust towards great philosophical systems and marked by disappointment towards people insensitive to the suffering of others, although it has been toughened in the pain of loss, it is, against all odds, a vision filled with hope. Defying the absurdity of existence, in spite of terror, countermining the unimaginable burden of the memory of the Shoah, the poems collected here – both the older ones, from which the poet extracts the essence, and those written only recently – reflect a unique order of the world, which, manifesting itself in language, is simultaneously languagedetermined. For Aleksander Rozenfeld, the word possesses a world-making power: it creates the reality which the poet inhabits. The order of his wor(l)d is thus a grammar, whose affirmativeness grows out of an only too tangible negation. Rozenfeld’s “I am” is a manifestation of his “grammar of presence,” rooted both in the transcendent logos and in deep empathy that excludes doubt.

Zamiast tego – współodczuwa. Doskonale rozumie kondycję człowieka in media res, zawieszonego między nadzieją i rozpaczą, walką i rezygnacją, miłością i nienawiścią.

I am prepared to report on the human condition there is much more of a man in a man than many would think, most of man is underground the deeper down the quieter man whispers to another man bless you in the whisper there is a thread of understanding between you and me on a vertical wall they hang plundering the earth’s treasures balancing like equilibrists alert to the whispers of the earth alert to the song of the earth insensitive to fear this fundamental element of man homo homini homo below est man to another man twice over only when truths arise does a poem exist a poem incapable of telling humankind of the greatest blazing sweat of labor on the face of man (translated by Katarzyna Błaszczyk, 2021)
