BIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE
2026
Dear media representatives,
The International Biathlon Union is preparing for record attendance at Milano Cortina 2026, as biathlon enters the Games on the back of unprecedented social and digital media growth, cementing its position as Europe’s most-watched winter sport.
The iconic Antholz-Anterselva Biathlon Arena will have the largest capacity of any venue at Milano Cortina 2026, accommodating 19,100 spectators, and is set to welcome close to 200,000 fans across the duration of the Games - an Olympic record for biathlon.
The Games will build on the huge interest generated during the 2025/2026 World Cup season so far, which has already surpassed expectations. In the first three months of the season, the @biathlonworld social media channels recorded more than 300 million impressions and 10 million engagements, while producing nearly 200 million video views - reaching these milestones a month earlier than in the previous season. The IBU website and official app have also seen strong growth this winter, with increases of 1030% across key metrics, putting biathlon on track for its strongest digital season ever. This momentum continues a rapid upward trajectory that, over the past three seasons, has seen reach, video views and engagement across IBU social media platforms rise by 300 - 400%.
On broadcast, biathlon remains Europe’s most-watched winter sport, reaching an average of 26 million viewers per World Cup in the 2024/2025 season, with 400 million live hours viewed, excluding the World Championships. The World Championships alone reached nearly 50 million viewers and generated more than 110 million live hours viewed.
Milano Cortina 2026 is set to crown a new generation of first-time Olympic biathlon champions. Following the retirement of Norwegian greats Marte Olsbu Roeiseland, Johannes Thingnes Boe, Tarjei Boe and Tiril Eckhoff, France arrives with the only two defending Olympic champions from Beijing 2022: Justine Braisaz-Bouchet in the Mass Start, and
Quentin Fillon Maillet in the Individual and Pursuit. Sweden’s Hanna Oeberg, the Individual gold medallist from PyeongChang 2018, remains the only other active Olympic champion. Against this backdrop, the relay events promise dramatic battles. Host nation Italy is also fielding perhaps its strongest team ever, with Total Score winners Dorothea Wierer and Lisa Vittozzi, alongside the powerful Tommaso Giacomel, all among the leading medal favourites.
The Antholz 2026 Biathlon Media Guide brings together everything you need to know: a complete list of nominated athletes, concise profiles of the sport’s leading names, explanations of each discipline, a detailed venue guide and a historical overview. To get even closer to biathlon, explore Ski Fast, Shoot Clean, an intimate documentary series that takes you inside the athletes’ world like never before.
I hope this guide offers a clear overview and brings you closer to the heart of our sport.
Enjoy the Games!

BIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE ANTHOLZ 2026
INTRODUCED
Biathlon is a sport that combines the endurance of free-technique cross-country skiing with precision small-bore rifle marksmanship. The combination of two very contradictory disciplines – skiing and shooting – in the same competition poses a very demanding challenge for any athlete. Cross-country ski racing requires intense, full-on physical exertion over an extended period of time, whereas shooting demands extreme control, stability and focus. When athletes arrive at the shooting range, they have to shoot at very small targets, with a racing heartbeat and heaving chest because the clock is running even while they are shooting, and a missed target results in a penalty. The shooting distance is always 50 m. Athletes fire five rounds at five targets in each shooting bout, except in the relay competitions, where the competitor has three spare rounds for each bout. There are two shooting positions, prone and standing, which are done either alternately or consecutively, depending on the competition. The target diameters are very small and depend on the shooting position. The targets are 115 mm in diameter for the standing, and even smaller for the prone (45 mm). Penalties are imposed for missed targets. Throughout the competition, the biathletes must always obey the IBU Event and Competition Rules.

INDIVIDUAL COMPETITION MEN/WOMEN
The Individual is the longest and the oldest competition in biathlon, with women skiing 15 km and men 20 km. The start interval is generally 30 second. There is no penalty loop: each missed target in the individual adds a minute to the final time. Athletes shoot first in prone position, then standing, then prone again and finally standing again.

SPRINT COMPETITION MEN/WOMEN
The Sprint format is a time-trial competition with two shooting stages, 1 prone and 1 standing. Women ski 7.5 km and men 10 km. Competitors start at 30-second intervals; each missed target results in a penalty loop of 150 m.

BIATHLON DISCIPLINES
PURSUIT COMPETITION MEN/WOMEN
The Pursuit allows the top 60 athletes from the sprint competition to compete over 10 km for women and 12.5 km for men. There are four stops at the shooting range: the first two in the prone position and the last two in standing. The start interval is determined by the results of the sprint competition so that the winner starts first, the second follows by the time back from the sprint results and so on until 60th. Just as in the sprint, each missed target corresponds to a penalty loop of 150 m.

MASS START COMPETITION
In the Mass Start 30 athletes start simultaneously and compete over a course of 12.5 km for women, 15 km for men. There are four shooting stages: the first two in the prone position and the last two in standing. Each missed target corresponds to a penalty loop of 150 m. The winner of the mass start is whoever crosses the finish line first.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION

RELAY COMPETITION MEN/WOMEN
In the women (4x6 km) and men (4x7.5 km) Relay competitions, the first members of all teams start simultaneously and after completing their part, tag the next member in the hand-over zone to start them on their way. Athletes have three spares to load manually in case of missed shots. If a target(s) remain standing after the three spares, the athlete goes to the 150 m penalty loop.

MIXED RELAY COMPETITION
The Mixed Relay (4x6 km) is a mixed-gender competition, formed with teams of two women and two men from the same country. The competition specifics are, in principle the same as in the regular relays. Women start the competition, and men continue.
BIATHLON MEDIA GUIDE

In biathlon, skiing fast and shooting clean is everything you need to do. Simple? Sure. Easy? Nope. What drives the athletes - and everyone around them - in the perpetual quest to find that fine balance between high speed and a calm mind, to capture those elusive yet magnificent moments?

EPISODE 01 WHAT THE F*CK IS BIATHLON
What is this weird, unique, and phenomenal sport that brings hundreds of thousands of fans to the venues, captures spectators’ attention, and drives athletes and their support staff to either euphoria or disappointment? “It is a beautiful sport and a beautiful life,” says Quentin Fillon Maillet. “It can also be an asshole,” adds Franziska Preuss.

EPISODE 02
WINTER BEGINS IN JUNE
More work is done in the summer than in the winter. Those long summer training days can feel boring - or, as Dorothea Wierer would tell you, they are mostly boring. But winter triumphs are built in the summer, by dreaming big, focusing on details, and working hard.

EPISODE 03 PRESSURE POINT
Elite sport is an egoistic endeavour. In biathlon, you win or lose on your own. So how do athletes deal with pressure points - like shooting with a pounding heart, trembling legs, and fans shouting? Can they embrace both triumph and disaster and treat them the same?
SKI FAST –SHOOT CLEAN
A BIATHLON DOCUMENTARY

EPISODE 04 BIATHLON CULTURES
Norwegians are said to be born with skis on their feet. Their coaches teach children to coach themselves, listen to their bodies, and adapt. The French have built their winning culture on their national identity, while the Germans have optimised their protocols and facilities. Others - like New Zealander Campbell Wright, now competing for the United States - were given an opportunity through the IBU’s vision and generosity.

EPISODE 05 TACTICS & TEAMWORK
Margins for error in biathlon are increasingly small. A biathlete’s performance is the result of the relentless commitment of many people rarely seen on screen and even less often in person. They take care of nutrition, skis, travel - everything except the competition itself - and they are the first to celebrate when things work out.

EPISODE 06 ALL EYES ON ANTHOLZ
And then, of course, there is Olympic biathlon at perhaps the sport’s most famous and picturesque venue: Antholz-Anterselva. History will once again be rewritten in this natural diamond in the heart of Europe.
NOC QUOTA LIST EXPLONATION
Twenty NFs have earned four starting slots per individual competition based on the Nations Cup Score from the 2024/2025 season. Those same NFs are also able to assemble relay teams. In addition, twelve athletes from NFs that finished outside the top 20 in last season’s Nations Cup Score were able to earn a wild card based on IBU Qualifying Points from the current 2025/2026 season. This means that 12 women and 12 men had the chance to earn a wild card, and more than one athlete per NF (but no more than two) was able to qualify.
Among the 20 NFs that secured four starting slots, the three strongest from last winter’s Nations Cup Score had the right to register six athletes. This means they can theoretically field different four-athlete lineups for the Sprint and Individual events and mix athletes across the Women’s, Men’s, and Mixed Relay teams. NFs that finished 4th to 10th had the right to register five athletes, while NFs ranked 11th to 20th had the right to register four athletes.

BEIJING 2022: THE GAMES OF ASTONISHING ACHIEVEMENTS
In the two weeks of high-paced, high-stake drama at the high altitude, extreme cold, and gusting winds of Zhangjiakou, biathlon’s history got written anew at the Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games. JT Boe, Marte Olsbu Roeiseland, and Quentin Fillon Maillet won five medals each. Some other athletes won career-first Olympic gold and much more career-first Olympic medals.
OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES 2022

JT BOE EQUALS OLE EINAR BJOERNDALEN
JT Boe’s four gold medals in the Mixed Relay, Sprint, Men’s Relay, and Mass Start matched those of Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, who won gold in the Individual, Sprint, Pursuit, and Men’s Relay at the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympic Games.
Being mentioned in the same context as Bjoerndalen left Boe - who also won bronze in the Individual - almost breathless as he carefully chose his words: “Ole Einar is the greatest king of biathlon. To be named in the same sentence as him is a reason to celebrate.”

OLSBU ROEISELAND MAKES HISTORY
Marte Olsbu Roeiseland’s triple gold from Beijing 2022 equalled Darya Domracheva’s Pursuit - Individual - Mass Start gold collection from Sochi 2014. While Marte won gold in the Sprint, Pursuit, and Mixed Relay, she also added bronze in the Individual and Mass Start, becoming the first woman to win a medal in all four individual disciplines at a single Olympic Games.

FILLON MAILLET’S OLYMPIC MASTERPIECE
Fillon Maillet won gold in the Individual and Pursuit and added silver in the Sprint, Mixed Relay, and Relay. No Frenchman - not even Martin Fourcade - had ever achieved that. Like Marte Olsbu Roeiseland, Quentin worked long and hard to reach the pinnacle of biathlon. “If others train hard, I train harder,” he said.
CAREER-FIRST OLYMPIC
INDIVIDUAL GOLD
Four athletes captured their first-ever Olympic individual gold medals: Quentin Fillon Maillet triumphed in the Individual, Marte Olsbu Roeiseland claimed Sprint gold, Denise Herrmann-Wick won the Individual, and Justine Braisaz-Bouchet secured victory in the Mass Start - each reaching a defining milestone on the sport’s biggest stage.

The International Biathlon Union (IBU) is recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as the international governing body for the Olympic sport of biathlon. Headquartered in Anif bei Salzburg, the IBU is a non-profit organization registered in Austria that regulates the sport and oversees the competition organization world-wide. In cooperation with its 61 member national federations (NFs), the IBU uses competitions, events, programs and other activities to promote and develop participation in Biathlon throughout the world. The IBU was founded in 1993 as independent association under the umbrella of the UIPMB alongside the UIPM (Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne). The IBU separated from UIPMB in 1998. In July 2022, the IBU took over the governance of the Para biathlon from the International Paralympic Committee. Para biathlon is managed jointly by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) and the International Biathlon Union (IBU). The IBU was welcomed as a new member of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) on 28 September 2023 - during the 2023 IPC General Assembly in Manama, Bahrain.
The IBU holds all rights pertaining to Biathlon World Championships (senior, junior, and youth), Biathlon World Cups, Biathlon Continental Championships, IBU Cups, IBU Junior Cups, Biathlon Continental Cups and Summer Biathlon World Championships. In exercising these rights, the IBU has marketing and sponsor partnerships, and cooperates with the European Broadcasting Union. Furthermore the IBU is responsible for promoting the sport of biathlon by supporting and developing it in both competitive sports and popular recreational sports, with special emphasis on the development of youth.
The IBU aims to combine development of the techniques and materials for practicing biathlon with respect for the health of the athletes, the integrity of nature, and human surroundings. The IBU attempts to achieve harmony through the IBU Constitution and Rules and their respective practice, as well as through licenses and inspections of biathlon event sites. The IBU proudly offers a dynamic and evermore attractive sport, which combines total physical exertion over an extended period of time when running or skiing with the extremely fine control and calm necessary when shooting.
