TUITION SUPPORT PAYS OFF A

manda Kushnir’s childhood wasn’t a “get-everything-you-want” one. Raised by a single mother, attending Jewish day school seemed like it was out of the question. But thanks to Bialik’s tuition support, she was able to enrol in Grade 1 and gradu-

ated in 1990. Today, she is the Assistant General Counsel for a leading Canadian law firm. For Bialik, offering tuition support is an important element of the school’s philosophy. As a recipient of this assistance, Amanda understands how impactful the program can be. Amanda’s mother wanted her to have an academically challenging Jewish education. She explains that Bialik was her mother’s first choice but financially out of reach. “Had a subsidy not been available, it wouldn’t have been a reality for me to attend,”

says Amanda. As soon as she started, she instantly felt welcomed because of Bialik’s inclusive

nature. She points out that this, both in terms of religious observance and acceptance of students from diverse backgrounds, was something her mother was seeking. Inclusiveness is still a priority for Bialik. The school’s Tzedakah initiative involves students in raising money to be used for tuition support. “Accessibility is one of the pillars that the school stands on,” says Shana Harris, Head of School. “Through the Tzedakah program, we teach our students about how important it is to help those who cannot afford a Bialik Jewish education.” To Shana, the impact of the program not only helps children attend the school, it also imparts the value of how to help others. Amanda is now a Bialik parent and new board member. Sitting on the development committee and co-chairing the annual campaign for a second time, she continues to be involved in efforts to raise money for tuition support. “This is obviously something near and dear to my heart,” says Amanda. Stories like Amanda’s are the reason that the tuition support program exists. Helping students receive a Jewish education will always be one of the commitments Bialik makes to the Toronto community.

SCORING BIG FROM BIALIK

hen a Toronto Maple Leafs player gets a puck to the mouth, it’s Bialik alumnus Marvin Lean who comes to the rescue. As one of two dentists for the team,

he’s always ready to spring into action, whether that means working on missing teeth or assessing a broken jaw. His priority is getting players back on the ice to, hopefully, help win the game. Like most successful careers, Marvin’s wasn’t a matter of luck. It took years of developing and honing skills in order to become truly proficient. While he clearly had to learn specialized knowledge, he attributes much of his accomplishment to core values that were taught at Bialik. As the dentist for the Leafs, he has to think outside the box to quickly find the best treatment for his patients. He explains that Bialik’s high-level curriculum trained him to push limits. “Bialik taught me that I didn’t have to accept the way things were; I could challenge the status quo,” says Marvin. Another key quality he acquired was a strong sense of selfesteem. “It helped me believe I could achieve my lifelong goals,” says Marvin. These goals range from having a private practice to being one of only a handful of dentists in North America to work for a professional sports team. Marvin shares the Leafs workload with another Bialik family member, Charles Goldberg. They not only work together at Leafs games but also in securing Bialik’s future. They are both committed to strengthening the school as former parents and board members. Charles currently sits on the Capital Campaign Cabinet and is a former board member. Marvin chairs the alumni committee and became Bialik’s youngest ever board member soon after graduating. After all the years that have passed, and the hockey players he has treated, Marvin’s Bialik education is still something he thinks about. When asked if he had any advice for the current graduating class, Marvin said: “The school has instilled in you many values, approaches and learning skills that will aid you for the rest of your life. Don’t forget them and you will succeed!”

ith help from current parents Marnie and Steven Davidson, Bialik Hebrew Day School recently completed construction

of its new custom-designed playground at the Viewmount branch. The tired play structures and chain-link fences have disappeared, and new basketball courts, an Explorer Dome and all-sport turf have been installed. For the Davidsons, the opportunity to contribute to this project fit with their personal and professional philosophy. Their belief is quite simple: give back to the community you live in. The Davidsons’ contributions to Bialik started small. As the co-owner of North American Produce Buyers, a fruit wholesaling company, Steven continues to use his business’s resources to help; he provides apples at Rosh Hashanah to ensure everyone has a sweet New Year. The playground project allowed the Davidsons to take their giving to the next level. Financing the upgrade was a major fundraising effort enabling Bialik to continue its mission of developing the whole child. “Good education goes well beyond the classroom,” says Benjy Cohen, Viewmount Branch Principal. “The physical, social and emotional development that happens on the playground is key to the healthy development and maturation of our students.” Marnie and Steven believe everyone should contribute in whatever way they can. To them, this means going beyond paying tuition. “We want to help Bialik as much as we can,” says Steven. The Davidsons worry that if the community doesn’t give back, it could have an impact on opportunities for the community’s children. “It’s so important to ensure that our kids are able to attend an excellent school,” says Steven. Often, what’s so special about contributing is the effect it has on others. The Davidsons are thrilled that

hree years ago, the Ben and Edith Himel Education Centre on the Joseph & Wolf Lebovic Jewish Community Campus opened its doors for the first time with three classes: one in

Junior Kindergarten, Senior Kindergarten and Grade 1, for a total of 67 students. In September 2015, the school started the year with over 160 students in eight classes. Due to the increasing demand for a Bialik education, the Board of Directors and Administration decided to accelerate construction and completed Phase 1B in August 2015. It added six fully equipped classrooms and a large gym/multipurpose room. Construction of Phases 2 and 3 is slated to begin in April 2017 and, with the support of our community, will be completed by September 2018. This will enable Bialik to accommodate up to 500 students in two classrooms per grade, from JK to Grade 8. A total of $10 million is needed to complete Phases 2 and 3 of the Himel branch.

THE NEW INNOVATION LAB A space that explores the science of being creative

ialik’s new Innovation Lab is a modern learning space that allows students to explore the realms of design and crit-

ical thinking. It houses a 3D printer, Lego robotics, laptops and design software, combined with more traditional tools like hammers, nails and saws. Using the interdisciplinary STEM approach (science, technology, engineering and math), students will creatively blend subjects to solve problems. This year, Grade 7 and 8 students are the primary users of the space. The Grade 7 project challenges students to build a catapult that can hurl an object a specific distance. Students have to engineer the catapult itself and use their math skills to determine the angles of the trajectory. “Students are designing a catapult, testing it, redesigning it, testing it again and tweaking it until it is perfect,” explains Amy Platt, Director of General Studies. “This is design thinking and it takes problem solving to the next level.” Design thinking is a leading-edge methodology that links creative-problem solving to measurable outcomes. Grade 8 students are constructing robotic cars to expand their understanding of programming and communication. Using Lego and 3D-printed tires, students are tasked with fashioning the most intelligent car possible. Technology has become an essential element of today’s professional and social landscape. The Innovation Lab is part of Bialik’s commitment to provide students with an education that is relevant to the world in which we live. It prepares children for this environment, giving them the skills and confidence they need to smartly succeed.

or over 15 years, the Educational Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) has measured Ontario Grade 3 and 6 students’ achievement in reading, writing and math. While all public

schools across the province are required to participate in testing, private schools are exempt. Since the inception of the EQAO testing, Bialik has chosen to participate to demonstrate to students, parents, faculty and the community its commitment to academic excellence. Repeatedly, Grade 3 and 6 students at Bialik Hebrew Day School have outperformed their Ontario public school counterparts. While that represents an important endorsement of excellence at Bialik, it’s the deeper analysis that really makes EQAO worthwhile for the school. Particularly exciting are the Grade 6 reading and writing results. Over the past five years, 98% of Bialik students have met or exceeded provincial expectations in these subject areas—compared to the provincial average of 75%. “Studies have shown that when you learn more than one language your proficiency in your native tongue increases exponentially,” says Amy Platt, Director of General Studies. “This demonstrates that a four-language curriculum is a tremendous advantage to the academic development of Bialik students.” The educational leadership of the school not only values the top line test results but also carefully examines the data to support decision-

ialik Hebrew Day School, in partnership with ECHOage, offers a great way for students to contribute to their school while teaching them and

their friends the wonderful mitzvah of Tzedakah. When planning their child’s birthday party, parents can arrange it 13

all on the ECHOage website. The site allows them to set up an electronic invitation and, in place of a gift, asks for a financial contribution. The birthday child receives half of the total amount contributed, and the other half goes to Bilaik Hebrew

Day School. Since the inception of the program, students have raised over $30,000 for Bialik. Proceeds go towards the Library Fund and tuition support.

PHILANTHROPISTS When Nicole Moskovitch (pictured) celebrated her Bat Mitzvah, she chose to support two causes: Alzheimer’s research and Bialik Hebrew Day School. “My grandmother developed Alzheimer’s when I was young,” says Nicole. “At school, we learned how advanced the scientific research is in Israel and the amazing work being done on Alzheimer’s. Because of this, I donated a portion of my Bat Mitzvah gifts to the Weizmann Institute in Israel.” To highlight Israel’s medical initiatives, Nicole designed her centrepieces using test tubes and beakers. She then donated the materials to Bialik. Thank you, Nicole, for enhancing the science lab with additional supplies!

Young Philanthropists?

Hannah Silver left Bialik in December 2014 to move with her family to Calgary. Before the Silver family moved, Hannah celebrated her Bat Mitzvah and donated a portion of her gifts to the Tuition Support Fund at Bialik. Thank you, Hannah, for your generous donation! When Aaron Orbach celebrated his 6th birthday last fall, in lieu of gifts, he asked his guests to donate to the refurbishing of the playground at Bialik’s Viewmount branch. Thank you, Aaron—over $300 was raised! Senior Division students raised $2,500 through a variety of Tikun Olam programs during the year. They picked the Tuition Support Fund at Bialik as one of their philanthropic recipients. Thanks, Senior Division!
