MEET OUR NEW HEAD OF SCHOOL

PURSUING HIS CALLING Benjy Cohen’s dedication to Jewish education

s he sits in his office at Bialik’s Viewmount branch, Head of School Benjy Cohen surveys the playground below and muses about his career. “Education is an extraordinarily rewarding profession,” he says. It was a career path he considered even as a child. “I was always very happy at school,” he remembers, “and I wanted to be able to have that same impact my teachers had on me some day.” Benjy was raised in Washington D.C. He attended Jewish day school and his family was active in the Jewish community. Jewish values, identity and a love of Israel were instilled early. “Since Jewish schools are the environment in which I feel most at home, you could say Jewish education really chose me,” he observes. When Benjy was in Grade 5, his family moved to Israel for a year. The experience – immersion in Hebrew and in Israeli culture – was formative. After time in Israel as an undergraduate student he made aliya in 1988 and met his future wife Jane. They were married a year later, and together spent 13 years in Israel – where all three of their children were born. After army service and completing an MA in Middle Eastern politics at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Benjy embarked on a teaching career. When Benjy and Jane moved their family to the U.S. in 2001, roles as a synagogue education director and as head of a Jewish day school – as well as a second MA, in Public Administration – followed. In 2006, Benjy found his way north of the border to Bialik. “I was immediately attracted to the school’s non-prescriptive approach to Jewish education and the way Bialik is filled with a love of Israel,” he says. It was natural for Benjy and Jane to send their children to Bialik, and all three are Bialik graduates. Benjy reflects on their experiences at the school, with both pride and gratitude. “My children are all very different learners,” he notes. “Yet they all excelled here.” First as Principal of General Studies and then as Viewmount Branch Principal, Benjy has been deeply involved in school life at every level. He’s been courtside, coaching basketball, headed a variety of committees, and spearheaded numerous innovations – some of which are particularly dear to him. “I led a schoolwide technology initiative that integrated IT into our curriculum in an organic and transformative way,” says Benjy. “When I look at the one-to-one laptop

program, for example, I think we are a model school in how we use technology.” Benjy also played an integral role in the playground renovation at Viewmount, researching best practices in design, overseeing construction, and helping to fundraise for the project. Perhaps most rewarding has been helping to recruit Bialik’s exceptional faculty and staff members. “When I look around the school, I see I had a hand in bringing so many of our current teachers and administrators to Bialik,” he notes. “It’s a pleasure to work with people who are so dedicated, and who work so hard to make this school and community flourish.” The process of hiring Bialik’s new Head of School was rigorous and comprehensive, and there were many accomplished candidates. Benjy feels honoured to have been selected and is deeply appreciative of the opportunity to take on the leadership of a thriving school. However, “we can never rest on our laurels,” he says. Benjy has already integrated the advancement staff – encompassing development, admissions, communications and marketing – into a unified team. He’s kick-started a new strategic planning process for the school, and he has initiated a number of facility enhancements at both branches. His approach to implementing change is firmly one of inclusion. “Everything here is about getting people together, listening to one another and looking for ways we can improve and enhance what we do,” he explains. He cites a commitment to the core subjects (such as English and Hebrew) and the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and project-based learning as being key – as well as providing a meaningful and enriching Jewish studies program. “We all look for meaning in our lives,” he notes. “For me, that meaning comes from being a leader in Jewish education and being a part of an organization that is developing and nurturing Jewish identity in thousands of children.” He smiles as the sounds of the playground reach his window. School life at Bialik is vibrant and Benjy is clearly thrilled to be a part of it.

MEET OUR NEW BOARD PRESIDENT

BOUNDLESS VOLUNTEERISM Aviva Lowe leverages her passion for Bialik and multiple talents as new Board President

hile on a family trip to Israel last summer, Aviva Lowe was amazed. It wasn’t just the country’s sheer beauty, but rather her children’s instinctive connection to Israel that struck her. “They had an inherent familiarity with Israel, including its ancient sites, stories, language, and modern songs,” Aviva beams proudly of her daughter, Adina, 12 and son, Daniel, 11. “Our tour guide was blown away by their powerful understanding of Israel and their embodiment of Ahavat Yisrael. She asked me where they gained this knowledge. I told her it was from their school – Bialik.” Aviva is in her first year as President of Bialik’s Board of Directors and exudes a warm passion for the school. It permeates both her children’s positive experience as students and her own time as a Board member and volunteer. “Bialik is a first-rate Jewish day school,” Aviva relates. “Neither my husband, Richard, nor I ever had any doubt our children would go to Bialik. We were well aware of Bialik’s academic excellence. The way Bialik taught Judaism, in an open, non-prescriptive manner, its emphasis on love of Israel, and its teaching of Yiddish language and culture with its special link to our family’s roots, resonated with our values and philosophy. It was the right fit.” Aviva’s commitment to Bialik began from the time her daughter was a young student, by volunteering as a Gradeparent — a role she continues to assume today. As an active member of Na’amat, an international women’s organization, Aviva proudly joined the Bialik Board five years ago in her capacity as a Na’amat representative. Professionally, Aviva trained in pediatrics at Toronto’s Hospital for Sick Children, and has developed two diverse consulting pediatric practices. In addition, she has expertise in lactation medicine.

“I always wanted to be in a helping profession and medicine provided a perfect mix of human interaction and science,” Aviva says. “I was drawn to pediatrics because I found it represents a happier side of medicine. There is optimism in pediatrics.” In her time on the Board, Aviva has been on almost every committee and before becoming President, served as Vice-President. “I find my role as President to be humbling, as well as a significant responsibility,” she reveals. “The people with whom I work on the Board are very dedicated volunteers; we work collaboratively and passionately on behalf of the school. I really appreciate the opportunity to work with an incredibly talented administration, which is dedicated, innovative and hard-working. We all care so much about the success of Bialik.” Aviva has a number of key goals. “My vision is for us to continue to thrive in our expansion and enrollment, to be on the cutting edge of educational innovation, and to build on the positive relationship between the Board and parent body,” Aviva enthuses. Aviva notes Bialik is embarking on a new strategic planning process, which will provide a roadmap for the school over the next three to five years. She envisions the collective talents of the Board, administration, staff, parents and students ultimately taking Bialik to significant heights. “I want Bialik to be the pre-eminent Jewish day school that welcomes a broad spectrum of Jewish families from across the Greater Toronto Area,” she says. A smart, ambitious dream for a talented leader with incredible gumption. Exactly the kind of leadership that will benefit Bialik.

A SLAM DUNK STORY FROM THE HOLY LAND Bialik alum writes a fascinating book about Israel’s African-American basketball players

group of bubbies is schmoozing at their assisted living home in Jerusalem. One woman introduces her grandson, Bialik alum David Goldstein, mentioning he’s from Toronto. Immediately, the topic of discussion switches to Anthony Parker, an African-American basketball player. ‘What a mensch!” one woman exclaims. “Motek!” enthuses another. David is surprised. “Never would I have dreamed these women would know who Anthony Parker is, let alone describe him with such terms of endearment,” he says. The next day, David, a journalist, lawyer and sports executive, googles ‘black basketball players in Israel.’ The search yields a litany of results. For instance, Anthony Parker spent five superb seasons playing basketball for Maccabi Tel Aviv where he won five National Cups and was twice voted EuroLeague MVP. Later in the NBA, he proudly wore number 18 with the Toronto Raptors because, “The number 18 is the symbol for life and good fortune in Judaism.” These nuggets of information and the stories of hundreds of African-Americans who lived and played basketball in Israel set David on the path to researching and writing a book about this fascinating topic. In November 2017, 10 years after hearing those bubbies rave about Anthony Parker, Alley-Oop to Aliyah: African American Hoopsters in the Holy Land, was published. The book touches on issues of race, religion, identity and politics and the huge influence basketball has on Israeli society. In the words of esteemed American lawyer and author Alan Dershowitz, the book is, “a remarkable story that transcends sports, race, and even Israeli history.” David hopes the book will help open people’s hearts and minds about Israel. “I think it can educate people about Israel while shining a spotlight on an amazing

group of people who are truly ambassadors and heroes of the country,” he says. David, 38, says Bialik played a key role in fostering his love of Israel. “A love for Zionism and Judaism was a big part of my every day life at Bialik,” David reflects. David notes Bialik was also pivotal in shaping his writing abilities. “I remember when I was in Grade 8 and I had the late Ms. Brown who was a fantastic writing teacher,” David says. “She encouraged me to write about what I love and what I am passionate about and that is ultimately what I did.” While attending Northwestern University, David spent a semester as a reporter with the Cincinnati Enquirer. “It was absolutely the best place for a student to cover sports,” David says, noting the city and surrounding area has a large college basketball fan base. After graduating, David went to law school at York University’s Osgoode Hall. However, he quickly realized he missed writing basketball stories. “So I pitched my old bosses about covering college players after they graduate,” David enthuses. “I ended up doing one article each week. It was amazing.” David went on to write a book about Jamaal Magloire, an NBA player from Toronto. After law school, David practised corporate law, becoming a partner at the firm Cassels, Brock & Blackwell. He also developed a growing sports law practice and became an Adjunct Professor of Sports Law at the University of Toronto. David has recently taken on a new role as the Chief Operating Officer of U SPORTS, Canada’s equivalent to the NCAA. “The biggest thing we are trying to do is promote our extraordinary student-athletes and what they are all about,” David reveals. If what they’re all about is a reflection of the talents and ambitions of their COO, U SPORTS is destined to be a champion!

A STYLE OF HER OWN Interior decorator Jessica Waks has a keen eye for timeless décor

essica Waks’ dining room walls are adorned with hand-painted Chinese wallpaper in soft pastel tones of aqua, pink and purple. A glistening vintage crystal chandelier hangs over a gleaming wood dining table. It is a traditional, warm and timeless look - Jessica’s signature style. “I’m an old soul,” the 32-year-old interior decorator says cheerfully. “I like layered, decorated spaces that mix eras and styles.” Jessica is the owner of Jessica Claire Interiors, a boutique decorating service specializing in “timeless and sophisticated spaces.” She is also a media personality, having appeared on the Marilyn Denis Show and Cityline as a design and lifestyle expert. Sitting in her Toronto home, Jessica explains the virtues of running her own business. “Every day is different, which I love,” says Jessica, who graduated from Bialik in 1998 and will be sending her twin boys, Jack and Charlie, to her alma mater for JK next year. “I am really proud of the projects I take on and I have wonderful clients that trust in my vision. It requires a lot of multitasking to juggle so many projects, and I credit my organizational skills to my senior division years at Bialik.” Jessica’s road to the world of design is a winding one. As a student, she always enjoyed writing and studied at the University of Western Ontario. After graduating, she completed a program in communications at Seneca College. In 2008, she launched a lifestyle blog called, ‘The World According to Jessica Claire’. It was timed with Jessica’s parents renovating their home and Jessica taking a keen interest in the redesign of her own childhood bedroom. “As I redecorated, I started to blog about my newfound passion for design, along with other topics I had always been interested in, like food and art,” she notes. The blog caught fire and Jessica dedicated her free time to it while working in

corporate communications at CTV. When the architect working on her parent’s renovations learned about Jessica’s multiple talents, she hired her to work for the firm. With her plate already full, Jessica added even more professional demands. “I decided to go to night school at George Brown College to study Interior Decorating so I could become properly certified,” she reveals. “I got to learn all the theory at school and at the same time, apply it at work in the real world.” When Jessica moved into her own apartment with her soon-to-be husband David, her decorative savvy caught the attention of Style at Home, which featured their new pad in the magazine. After the shoot she learned they were looking for a new design editor. “I applied thinking it was a long shot,” she says with a grin. “But luckily it was mine.” Along with her editorial duties, the magazine asked Jessica to represent Style at Home on TV and at industry events. “It was a challenging new skill to learn, but I adapted,” Jessica says. I still do the occasional Marilyn appearance and my favorite segments to do are about Jewish holidays. I love sharing decorating and recipe ideas that feature the rich symbolism of our culture.” As they burst through the front door, Jessica scoops up Jack and Charlie and embraces them with a warm hug. These four-year-old identical twins are clearly the apple of their mom’s eye and she is looking forward to them attending Bialik next year. “I have such fond memories of my decade at Bialik – it really helped make me the person I am today and formed not just my academic foundation, but my connection to Israel and my culture,” Jessica says proudly. While her family is number one, her creative juices never stop flowing and her drive to please clients is entrenched. “I’ve accomplished a lot very quickly and I don’t take that for granted, she says contentedly. I look forward to seeing what’s next!”

TZEDAKAH IN ACTION

A DAY OF GIVING Crowd-funding campaign lights a spark in the Bialik community Lynda Latner and her husband, Steven.

t was a day of unity, action and giving. The Bialik family joined together with other Jewish day schools in the GTA for a unique, 24-hour fundraising drive to help make Jewish education more accessible. Held on June 20th last year, the extraordinary “giving day” offered an exciting matching donor opportunity; a dedicated group of benefactors gave three additional dollars for every dollar raised on the big day, quadrupling the total amount of each donation. “There is nothing more important than a Jewish education for our children,” says Lynda Latner, a generous contributor to the campaign who is a parent of four Bialik alumni and a current Bialik grandparent. “I felt making this donation was a small, but

KOL BIALIK | WINTER 2018

effective way to reach out to people to say supporting Jewish education is the right thing to do.” Working through the online crowd-funding platform, Charidy, the Bialik family showed their generosity, raising nearly triple the amount of the donation target goal. The campaign hashtag, #TogetherforBialik, lit a spark that resonated with a broad spectrum of Bialik’s family; parents, alumni, staff, grandparents and many more gave to pave the way for the future leaders, innovators and activists in our community. This year, Bialik will again participate in the Charidy campaign and Lynda encourages the community to show its support for Bialik. “When I look at my four grown children who went to Bialik, although they were all very different

TZEDAKAH IN ACTION

LEARNING HOW TO GIVE BACK Student-driven Tzedakah Campaigns Make a Real Difference

magine a school where the children – not teachers or parents - lead a massive campaign to build a school in a developing country. Or picture students who raise funds to buy goats and chickens to help families sell eggs and milk to pay for their kids’ education. These remarkable undertakings all happened at Bialik. “We’re very fortunate to go to a school like Bialik where there are so many opportunities for us to make a difference,” says Grade 8 student Sydney Smith. “For me personally, and I would say for everyone, it feels incredible to help other people.” Tzedakah is far more than a value at Bialik. It is a pillar of the school and students are at the forefront of taking tangible action to give back and help those in need. “As a school, we commit to four Tzedakah campaigns each year to allow students to have a thorough understanding of the world around them and the ways they can help,” says Director of General Studies Shoshana Taitz. “We often focus on initiatives that are geared specifically to children, so our students can really connect and internalize them.” Community campaigns have in past years focused on Sick Kids and the WE campaign, while local Jewish community initiatives have supported Zareinu. In addition, Bialik continues to express its love for Israel through Na’amat’s Dollars for David campaign. The fourth campaign involves students supporting Bialik’s annual campaign. Shoshana emphasizes all campaigns are student-driven, which makes the learning especially impactful. “Our students are learning how to share a message about the importance of their cause and how

to stand up for others,” she says. Shoshana and Senior Division VP Blake Enzel were inspired to initiate a groundbreaking Tzedakah event while attending WE Day at the Air Canada Centre. The annual event, with thousands of kids in attendance, is meant to kickstart a year-long initiative encouraging students to participate in any kind of giving back. As part of the program’s giveaways, Shoshana and Blake received a piece of Lego. “I looked at Blake and said, ‘this is the campaign!’ We are going to ‘Build for Change’ and symbolically have Lego pieces represent what we build,” Shoshana recalls. “The students decided to build a school for kids in Haiti.” Brilliantly designed, the campaign featured a Lego model of the school; each Lego piece was likened to each brick of the school. The goal was to have one brick for each student. The students leading the campaign visited each classroom to teach the kids about the endeavour. In the end, over $17,000 was raised. The WE day organizers were so impressed by the campaign that at last year’s WE day event in October,

Bialik was the first Jewish day school, and one of 12 out of the 2,000 participating schools, to be recognized for the ingenuity and impact of Building for Change. Sydney and fellow Grade 8 student Maya Krieger are both members of the WE club at Bialik and had the unique opportunity to attend the WE Day event. “It was amazing to see so many people at the Air Canada Centre recognize Bialik,” says Maya. Recognition well deserved!

Bialik is privileged to have many exceptional students, each with unique and inspiring accomplishments. This year, Kol Bialik is honoured to introduce a new magazine section entitled ‘Spectacular Kids,’ which recognizes students who demonstrate creativity, leadership and achievements in the Bialik and broader community. We are pleased to feature child author Shiraz Meisels and musician and amateur producer Troy Lebane.

A PASSION FOR WRITING: SHIRAZ MEISELS Shiraz Meisels is an exemplary Grade 7 Bialik student currently working on publishing her third book. In her own words, Shiraz writes about the origins of her passion, what inspires her literary pursuits and the pivotal role Bialik plays in her prolific writing.

have been fond of reading since kindergarten and recall having my own reading bin of books in my SK class. With my imagination peaked at such a young age, I began writing elaborate stories in Grade 1. In the second grade, my teacher assigned a writing project. She asked us to write a short piece about someone who means a lot to us. That night, I had a dream about my grandfather, who had passed the year before. My dream was of him saving the world from evil monsters. My grandfather was a Holocaust survivor and although he never spoke of his experiences during the war, I always knew that he was very brave and very strong. I wondered if the dream reflected his experiences during the horrendous days of the Holocaust. My dream was very vivid and affected me greatly. When I woke up, and he wasn’t there, I knew whom I needed to write about. Him. At that moment, I discovered my true passion for writing. Inadvertently, my grandfather was the first person to inspire me. Two years later, I wrote my first book. The Adventure of the Invisible Boy. The book is about a young boy who sets on exciting adventures with his close friends and tries to reinstate order in the world. It is filled with ghosts, magic and many secrets. I had several inspiring teachers at Bialik that year and had asked them to read my draft. I thought they would correct grammar and cross things out, but I was wrong. The feedback that I received was instrumental in shaping my book. They helped me to think more broadly about the book as a whole as opposed to line by line. They were supportive and encouraging and gave me confidence to continue. In grade four, I entered a writing competition for

young authors across Canada. There were approximately 1000 applicants between the ages of eight to fourteen. My book won second place. Within the year, I published my second book of the series, The Adventure of the Invisible Boy 2, The Missing Piece. I am currently working on the third and final book of The Adventure of the Invisible Boy and hope to publish it this year. Writing makes me feel complete. I use examples from my everyday life and include them into my stories. When I write, I feel like I am expressing myself. I feel so happy, in the sense that what I write, and how I choose to write it, can inspire others and influence them in a positive way. A friend once told me that he lost his imagination as he got older, and it took a while for him to find it again. He advised me to keep writing, as the more you write, the more creative you become. I have had great opportunities such as reading segments of my books to students as well as selling my books at the Bialik book fair. I am touched when people tell me how much they enjoy reading my books. Some have even used them for book reports. Bialik has helped inspire me in so many ways. Without writing projects at school, I may not have realized my potential and that I love to write. My teachers challenge and encourage me to be the best writer I can be. They give me direction and space to let my imagination soar. I am grateful to be part of the Bialik family, and I hope the school continues to inspire other young authors, like it did me.

MUSICAL PHENOMENON EN ROUTE TO THE BIG SHOW

Remember the name Troy Lebane. A few years from now, you might see it on a Broadway playbill or on the credits for a hit song. Troy graduated from Bialik in 2014 and attends the Etobicoke School of the Arts, a unique school that allows students to pursue their artistic passions. “It’s really cool,” says Troy. “I have always loved performing and to be able to get a great education at the same time is a wonderful opportunity.” Troy is in Grade 12 and studying musical theatre with the goal of a career in musical performance, production, composing and arranging. He’s applying to continue his post secondary studies at music programs in Montreal and Boston. Studying musical performance while completing all the other high school requirements isn’t easy, but Troy’s experience at Bialik prepared him for the challenge. “Coping with the dual curriculum at Bialik has definitely helped me with the arts and academics course load here,” reports Troy. Troy is what he aptly describes as “super involved in music and extra-curriculars.” The list of additional activities includes membership on the student council, leadership of the show choir and as a vocal captain, performing in both an ensemble and school musical, and participation in the chamber choir and Black History Month activities. And that’s just at school. In addition, he direct-

ed a group of children from Camp Wahonowin in a performance that was part of Pass the Music On, a charity event that raises money to send underprivileged kids to summer camp. Troy acknowledges his student council experience at Bialik may well have laid a foundation for his current involvement in charity activities. Despite his demanding schedule, Troy is doing really well academically. Bialik certainly played a role in his early success in high school. “Grade 9 was pretty easy,” reports Troy. “The French I learned at Bialik was awesome and I had a good background in History and English, including essay writing. Bialik provided me with a solid foundation for high school.” Troy finds his Bialik education has “been useful in everyday life and comes in handy many times.” For example, his Hebrew skills were put to use when the school’s chamber choir performed songs with Hebrew lyrics, and his knowledge of Jewish history helped him better understand the context of Cabaret, a musical set in pre-Holocaust Germany. “I also have Bialik to thank for the friendships I have today,” Troy relates. Even with my crazy schedule, I make time for my very special friends.” Summing up his time at Bialik, Troy’s conclusion is that “the quality of education is very good and it prepares students very well for their future.” We look forward to Troy’s ongoing success. ISRAEL CONNECTIONS: Connecting with Israel is a pillar of our school. Students don’t simply learn about Israel – they connect directly with Israeli students and gain concrete skills. Lessons integrate all subject areas, from geography and Hebrew language, to Tanach and STEM. For example, Grade 3 students have engaged in real-time online conversations and songs with students at the Huberman School in Petah Tikvah, Israel. Our Grade 4 students worked with students in Eilat to develop ways to prevent pollution in the beautiful Red Sea. The children developed all kinds of solutions, from brochures to beach towels with messages of environmental stewardship. “We’ve embarked on problem-based learning and authentic Hebrew language instruction together with schools in Israel which bring Israel to life in Canada,” says Kathy Friedman, Director of Jewish Studies. “Our children discuss, debate and research, which in turn advances their minds and ultimately, trains them to be self-confident and successful Jewish citizens who are limitless in their pursuits.” Bialik hosted the first ever Gesher Chai Bridge Building Competition in 2017, bringing together students from five Toronto Jewish day schools and the Goldwater School in Eilat to put their STEM skills to the test. More than 60 students in Grades 6-8 took part in the friendly competition, building bridges between Canadian Jewish students and Israeli students.

A WORLD OF WONDER Marcus Dickler tackles his new role leading STEM with excitement for the future

hen he was five-years-old, Marcus Dickler made a unique discovery – he figured out how to disassemble a calculator. Walkmans, speakers and VCRs soon followed. Watching telephone and cable techies making repairs fascinated him, so much so that when they finished, he’d take off the wire covers and repeat their steps! Not exactly conventional child’s play, but a sure tell sign he had a passion and special talent. “My love of building and technology really started when I was five,” explains Marcus, sitting steps away from a series of saws, pliers, hammers and screwdrivers inside the Science, Technology, Engineering & Math (STEM) Lab at Bialik’s Viewmount branch. “And it just continued to grow and grow.” After 16 years as a Bialik general studies teacher, Marcus made a major career move this school year. He became Bialik’s first full-time STEM Coordinator. “I have always tried to integrate technology into

the classroom and this opportunity is really amazing,” Marcus reveals. “The positive impact STEM will have on students not only in the classroom, but also outside the classroom, is very exciting to me.” Marcus notes Bialik’s STEM program is focused on critical thinking rather than evaluating the quality of the finished product. “STEM is all about process – the many steps you need to take to create your vision,” Marcus relates. He points out the emphasis on process arms kids with the ability to experiment, think critically and even handle failure when the prototype doesn’t work, for example. “STEM teaches kids to persevere and learn how to move forward after failing,” he says. “Going through all of these steps will set them up for success.” The STEM program makes use of a wide array of modern technology, including robots which the kids program, a laser cutter and vector software. Students learn coding as early as the primary grades.

These high tech tools, along with the special space needed to engage in building and design, present a unique challenge. “To provide rich and meaningful programs, we need to be able to stay as current as possible with technology and that can be challenging and expensive,” Marcus says. From his many years at Bialik, Marcus has developed relationships with a wide swath of the Bialik community. He is happy that this new role will allow him to engage with just about everyone in the school community. “In any given week, I could be working with every single stakeholder in the entire school,” he says. “It’s one of the only jobs where I get that kind of opportunity.” The STEM program is also serving to link students and teachers with their contemporaries in Israel. Bialik is twinned with the Galim School in Eilat and last fall, Marcus travelled to Israel to meet with colleagues at the Galim School to work on a unique project for Grade 5 students focusing on clean energy. “The project will have the kids comparing and contrasting the main energy sources here in Toronto, to those in Eilat,” Marcus explains. “We are also using the program to build relationships, enable our students to bond with the kids in Israel beyond school projects and reinforce Hebrew speaking skills.” It will culminate with an innovative joint program on Yom Ha’atzmaut. The years ahead promise to be full of new and fascinating initiatives for the STEM program and that’s exactly how he likes it. “I’m excited about the future because the future is unknown,” Marcus says. “It’s the sense of wonder that STEM provides that makes every day a fresh new challenge.”

BACK TO BIALIK A growing cadre of alumni send their kids to JK at Bialik

here wasn’t any hesitation when Alisa Daly made the choice of where to send her children. “Sending my kids back to Bialik wasn’t really a decision,” says Alisa Daly ‘95, one of over two dozen Bialik alumni with children in JK this year. “I always wanted them to go to Bialik. It just felt like home.” Alisa’s son Noah is one of 33 JK students this year who are children of alumni. That represents a remarkable 22% of the JK cohort and improves on last year’s impressive number of 19 JKers who were part of the “coming back to Bialik” trend. Noah’s older brother, Ben, in Grade four, was the first of Alisa’s children to come back to Bialik. “We toured other schools so my husband Robert, who is from Ireland, could form his own impressions,” explains Alisa. “In the end he felt that Bialik, with its emphasis on community, tradition and Israel, was best suited to our family.”

Alisa is quite accomplished. After graduating from Bialik, she attended CHAT and then completed a BA in History and Hebrew Literature at McGill. From there she studied at the London School of Economics, earning an M.Sc. in International Relations. Alisa returned to Toronto to attend OISE where she received her B.Ed. She now owns First Foundations Academy, a successful Jewish preschool with locations in Vaughan and the Cedarvale area of Toronto. “Bialik gave me a level of confidence that allowed me to take on demanding academic environments,” Alisa says. “There’s a lot of Bialik in First Foundations including the courage to get it started and my passion for Jewish education.” Alisa’s boys are thriving at the Himel branch. “Himel is a beautiful place, with a wonderful community, fabulous teaching staff and amazing administrators,” exudes Alisa. “Every last person really cares about the school and wants to make it even better. It’s a real gem.”

IT JUST FELT LIKE HOME.” Bialik’s Head of School Benjy Cohen notes that having alumni send their children back to Bialik speaks volumes about the school’s enduring impact. “It’s tremendously gratifying to have so many of our alumni choosing Bialik for their children,” says Benjy. “The fact that so many of our JK students are children of alumni is both an expression of confidence in the school and confirmation of the enduring impact of the Bialik experience.” Last year, for parent teacher conferences, students were asked to leave a note for their parents. Ben’s note to Alisa and Robert said simply, “Thank you for sending me to Bialik.”

WHY CHOOSE BIALIK? The Katz family went on a quest to find the right Jewish day school

hen Adrienne Katz was a young girl, she spent her elementary school years in private schools, including Bialik, where she was a happy and accomplished student. Her husband, Oren, grew up in Edmonton attending public schools in the IB stream. Like many parents, their diverse educational experiences made choosing which school to send their children to a challenging decision. “Our paths were quite different, so we had a lot of comparing to do,” says Adrienne, who co-owns a marketing and branding agency with Oren. “We talked a lot about what the public school system has to offer, and what the Jewish day schools and other private schools offer, and we agreed we wanted our children to have a Jewish day school education.” Once that agreement was made, Adrienne and Oren embarked on a quest. Adrienne developed a spreadsheet with specific criteria. They began visiting the various Jewish day schools in the city, keenly evaluating each of them in every category. In a couple of cases, they made three visits to an individual school. “Academic excellence, Security, facilities, Zionism, teachers, religiosity – these were some of the key criteria we looked at,” explains Adrienne. In addition to the school visits, Adrienne spoke with many parents and students to get first-hand perspectives. The search was rigorous and the Katzes were very thoughtful and methodical. But emotions also played a major factor in making their choice. “You have to be in the school to see how it feels,”

Adrienne says. “When it feels right, you know it and so do your children.” Adrienne and Oren decided on Bialik. So how did Bialik become their top choice? “Academics was the key,” Adrienne reveals. “My experience at Bialik was that I learned work habits that set me up for success throughout the rest of my academic career and life.” Adrienne adds another key reason the couple chose Bialik was because of the school’s inclusive approach to Jewish education. “Whatever Judaism you practice is welcomed and celebrated at Bialik,” Adrienne says. “And at the same time, the traditions, Kabbalat Shabbat, Hebrew and the way students are invited to love Israel are values for our family that we are very happy to have carried on with our children.” Today, all the Katz kids – Ezra, Grade 4, Jazmin, Grade 2 and Gizelle, JK - are all at Bialik and thriving. “My children are having very good experiences at Bialik,” Adrienne says. “They have great teachers. They are making lifelong friends. They are learning to be good humans. It’s wonderful.”

NEW ADMINISTRATORS SET SIGHTS ON BIALIK’S CONTINUED SUCCESS This school year has been an exciting and enriching experience for the Bialik community. One of the keys to our school’s continued success is our administration, including administrators at both branches who have taken on new roles. We asked each of the administrators in new positions to provide a little insight into their background and aspirations by asking the following questions:

NEW VIEWMOUNT BRANCH PRINCIPAL: JAKE GALLINGER Prior to becoming branch principal, I spent two years as a Senior Kindergarten teacher and two years as Primary Vice Principal. Working with our youngest children was an enlightening and rewarding experience. I learned that all children are unique, special and kind at their core. There is a never a dull moment at Bialik. I have enjoyed getting to know our Bialik students and parents, coaching sports teams, and observing our wonderful teachers deliver meaningful and memorable life lessons. As I continue my first year as principal, I am always looking for ways to improve student achievement, positively influence school culture, support teacher growth and engage parents in learning opportunities. Bialik is a thriving organization with a dedicated faculty, ambitious student body, and supportive parent community. The sky is the limit and there is always room for improvement. I am looking forward to enjoying the journey together.

I began as one of four Grade 6 general studies teachers, teaching math, language and social studies. At the same time, I was also teaching Grade 8 math. Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of being a mechanech for all three grades, starting the STEM program here as a teacher and coordinator, and also teaching social studies in Grade 7. Working closely with our resource department has been incredibly fulfilling, as we revamp our student support services. It has also been a terrific experience being involved in the development of our parent seminar series, as we continue to develop the relationship between home and school.

NEW HIMEL VICE PRINCIPAL: LAUREN DAMELIN I have worked in education for 18 years as a classroom teacher, lead teacher, coach and Vice Principal. I chose a career in education because I believe every child is different and every child has the ability to learn. I continue to pride myself on being able to instill the love of learning in children. I believe teaching with a growth mindset for myself, staff and students will impact the experience students have in the classroom. My experience and roles have led me to evolve as a person and educator. Each day at Himel brings new challenges and initiatives. I have enjoyed seeing learning come to life and watching children and teachers succeed. I look forward to continue working as part of a collaborative team and to build our programs.

NEW VIEWMOUNT VICE PRINCIPAL, PRIMARY: KAREN LIDOR My career at Bialik has included teaching in all three divisions. I started in Kindergarten and then moved to Senior Division, where I taught Grade 6 general studies, as well as in the Mechanech program. In later years, I taught Grade 3 gym, Grade 7 math and Grade 8 science. Before becoming a teacher, I worked as a conflict mediator for youth in the criminal justice system. One of the most meaningful experiences I’ve had is watching our Kindergarten students participate in school-wide Kabbalat Shabbat celebrations. It was extremely moving to see them sing with full voices and hearts, as they joined together with over 800 students. When I see the students in the hallways, their smiles and excitement make me proud of the work we are doing. One of my key objectives is ensuring every child feels they have an important place within our school. Each child should come to school with the knowledge that their peers and teachers are there to support, encourage and celebrate the individuality and the community that is Bialik.

NEW DIRECTOR OF GENERAL STUDIES: SHOSHANA TAITZ As a day school teacher for more than 15 years and a curriculum lead teacher, I brought to Bialik practical and administrative experience teaching the Ontario Curriculum. With a background in second language acquisition and curriculum integration, I have a unique understanding of the challenges and complexity of a multi-language program. As the Vice-Principal of Senior Division, I worked extensively with teachers to create and develop integrated programming across the curriculum and to organize and implement innovative events. One of the most meaningful experiences thus far has been a trip to Israel to build our relationship and joint programing with our twin school in Eilat, the Galim School. This has developed into a year-long learning experience for both teachers and students at Bialik and Galim. Key objectives for the this school year include: expanding our STEM programs to all grades; integrating STEM into the fabric of Bialik’s curriculum; the development and implementation of a balanced math program which includes a focus on rote math skills, and application and thinking; and the integration of “6+1 Writing Traits” into grades 1-8.
