Bialik Hebrew Day School is committed to providing an exemplary Jewish and General Studies education to children in Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 from diverse Jewish backgrounds. Dan Senor, renowned podcast host, writer and co-author of Start-Up Nation, recently reminded us that “Jewish education is one of the most reliable predictors of Jewish continuity.” His words resonate profoundly as Jewish people around the world face persistent challenges to our sense of security and our connection with Israel, our Jewish homeland. At Bialik, we prepare our students not only to excel academically but to lead proudly and confidently as Jews. At this time, our mission has never been more essential. Our school has begun developing our new strategic plan that will serve as our roadmap to our future. It will express the voices within our school community, including families, staff, faculty and students, as we address the unprecedented demand for a Bialik education within Toronto’s vibrant Jewish community. It will reflect both bold ambition and practical vision, charting a course toward growth combined with academic excellence as we deepen our school’s impact on Toronto’s Jewish families and students. It is only with our community’s generous support that we are able to ensure that Bialik fulfils its promise of being the Jewish day school for today’s generation. Annual giving is essential to the very vibrancy and spirit of Bialik. We are very grateful to all our donors who contributed last year. Tuition fees alone do not fully cover the cost of the excellent programs we offer and it is your critical support that enables us to continually enhance the academically excellent education for which Bialik is known. Your generosity is the engine that maintains our high standards and gives us the ability to aspire to do more. It allows us to innovate and invest in the future while remaining committed to our mission and values. Beyond aspiration, annual giving provides the agility to plan for the unknown and the flexibility to adapt rapidly to complex challenges. These include pivoting swiftly to remote learning during COVID lockdowns, bringing 100 Israeli students into our classrooms after October 7 and enhancing our security. Annual giving is also allowing us to critically address the issue of technology use in the classrooms and support the parent-led Unplugged Bialik initiative. It has been critically important as we step up to meet the needs of the Toronto Jewish community by opening up more JK classes at our Himel and Viewmount Branches. Your investment in Bialik yields tangible results that benefit every student, every day. Thanks to your support,

we were able to invest in our physical spaces, making essential enhancements to improve our students’ learning experience and ensure their safety. This included such projects as renovating the Himel East courtyard. We have also been able to invest in our students’ social-emotional well-being through rolling out the Responsive Classroom approach to building skills and a sense of community. Growing and Evolving with the Bialik Community Heather and Gershon Hurwen have a busy schedule. They have five young children, but they always make time to be involved in the Bialik community as volunteers and donors.

“all of our kids are at bialik,” says Gershon, the proud father of students in Grades 6, 4, 3, and twins in JK. “We are glad we chose Bialik. A top quality Jewish education is very important to us. At the same time, we want to make sure our kids are brought up and raised in an environment that’s nurturing, pushes them to succeed and ensures they have friends in their corner for life.”

Their children began at the Viewmount Branch in 2018 and they’ve been growing and evolving with the school community ever since.“I volunteer with the Parent Association, and have chaired various programs, including bringing the student art show to Bialik,” says Heather. “This has given me a unique opportunity to interact with many of the excellent teachers as well as the school Administration.” For his part, Gershon is a past Chair of the Tuition Support Committee. He is

currently serving on the Board Executive as Chair of the Finance Committee and is a member of the Jewish Security Network (JSN) parent volunteer group that was established in the aftermath of the October 7 attacks. Together, they donate funds to the school and, because of Gershon’s ownership of a food business, they have been able to contribute snacks and beverages to the school’s Shabbat dinners and other events. “Bialik is a very important cornerstone organization for Toronto as a whole,” says Gershon. “For our kids to have a viable future in this city, we need organizations with the gravitas and significance of Bialik to flourish. It’s why I allocate so much of my community time to Bialik.” He says Bialik is very good at shepherding volunteers into the right roles so

It’s also a very welcoming community and they encourage new and long-time parents to get involved and be engaged. It’s been a very positive experience for the Hurwens. “I love Bialik,” says Heather. “Our family loves being part of the community. Our older boys often play soccer with friends at school pick-up time and our kids are always inviting classmates over for play dates. I love seeing them in this environment and I love seeing how they thrive here.”

Originally from South Africa, Gershon supports Bialik because he wants to make sure his kids, and others, are given the same opportunity to have a Jewish education that his parents gave him. “There are not many places in the city where a person can embrace a connection to Israel. The world today is a very intimidating place and raising kids to be educated about things that are meaningful to us is very important.”

Business Partners Team Up to Give Back Mark Greenbaum and Jared Bensky have been business partners and friends for 15 years. the proud Bialik fathers have joined forces to bring together Bialik’s two branches in fun, unique ways — they have been generous corporate sponsors of numerous Bialik community events. “Our companies, Wycliffe Homes and Vogue Development Group, sponsored the Bialik Games, a day of friendly sports competitions, where students, parents and the community can get together,” says Mark, whose three boys attend the Himel Branch. The Bialik Games, which ran for two years, raised funds to support the school’s tuition assistance program, which helps families afford a Bialik education. In 2021 and 2022, during the pandemic, their two companies also funded two online cooking events presented by Chef Anthony Rose and Eden Grinshpan.

Both Jared and Mark are more than happy to do what they can to support Jewish education. “Today more than ever, it’s important to have a Jewish day school like Bialik. In the face of antisemitism and October 7, we have to be braver and stronger than ever before, and Bialik really preaches that,” says Mark.

Jared agrees. His daughters have now graduated from the Viewmount Branch, and he thanks Bialik for giving them a strong Jewish identity and connection to Israel. “There’s such a focus on learning about Israel being the homeland of the Jews, on Jewish traditions and on the Zionist experience. The curriculum, events and volunteering centre around that. As a Bialik alum myself, it’s nice to see that my kids had the same experience I did and to know that the school is still growing and staying strong.” Deciding to sponsor a sporting event was an easy choice. “My boys are in Grades 2, 5 and 8 and they’re super involved in athletics,” says Mark, whose wife is an active volunteer on Bialik’s Annual Campaign committee.

Their oldest son is also student council president. “They’re starting to learn about themselves and their Jewish identity in a community setting. To have my kids be part of something that’s growing from the ground up has been really special and nice to watch.” Jared’s daughters, now in Grades 9 and 11 at TanenbaumCHAT, love to dance and were very active in extracurricular activities at Bialik. They were very engaged in the Bialik Games. Says Jared: “Bialik is an institution that gave so much to us, so it’s our pleasure to do whatever we can to support them back.”

“It was such a powerful reminder of how Bialik not only celebrates students but also embraces their families and heritage.”

When it was time to choose a school for their two young daughters, Taryn and Ryan Scheer were looking for more than just strong academics. “We were searching for a place that reflected our values, our heritage and our hopes for the next generation,” says Ryan. “Bialik stood out as the clear choice.” Their girls, Evie and Addison, are in Junior Kindergarten and Grade 1, respectively, at the Himel Branch. From the very beginning, the girls felt at home. “Each morning, they are genuinely excited to go to school, and as a parent, there is no greater comfort than knowing your children are happy, engaged and thriving in their learning environment,” says Taryn. Taryn and Ryan are thrilled with the academic program, particularly the integration of STEM activities and how their children are learning Hebrew and

Yiddish, but that’s not all. They also love Bialik’s deep and meaningful connection to Israel. “We wanted our children to grow up with a strong sense of Jewish identity, and for us, Bialik integrated that connection in a way that felt authentic and lasting,” says Taryn. They also feel that what truly sets Bialik apart is the way it embraces the entire family. “The school invites multi-generational participation across many events and celebrations, creating a deep sense of connection and belonging,” says Ryan. “Bialik is not just a school for our children, but rather is a community for us as a family.” Their daughters love it when their family is invited to watch them sing, dance or present. One of their highlights was

Grandparents Day. Says Ryan, “Our daughter was absolutely beaming as she walked into school, hand-in-hand with both her Bubbie and Great Bubbie. It was such a powerful reminder of how Bialik not only celebrates students but also embraces their families and heritage.” The couple believes Bialik has created an environment where their daughters feel inspired, empowered and cared for; where Jewish values are lived and celebrated; and where every child feels like they belong. That’s why Taryn has taken on a leadership role on the Himel Annual Campaign Committee and the PA Executive. “These roles have allowed me to contribute meaningfully to the school’s growth while also helping strengthen the connection between home and school. This collaboration has not only enriched my experience as a parent, but has also played a vital role in supporting my children’ s overall success.” Taryn and Ryan soon understood that also supporting the school with their philanthropy and their time would benefit their family tremendously. Adds Ryan, “Bialik has made a profound impact on our family, and we are so grateful to be part of a school that honours the past while building a bright and inclusive future.”

Grandparents and Special Friends Day is always a wonderful occasion, a time to celebrate the vital role grandparents play in supporting their grandchildren and enriching the life of the school community.

from attending performances to engaging with students in the classroom, grandparents bring warmth, wisdom and a deep commitment to Jewish values. “Being part of Grandparents Day is such a joy,” shares grandparent Vicki Lubell. “Watching my grandchildren at Bialik, surrounded by a love of Judaism and a strong sense of community, fills me with gratitude. It’s so meaningful to see them carrying forward the traditions and values that have always been dear to our family.” For Karen and Barry Sacks, the event is equally special. “We’ve been lucky enough to attend several Grandparents Day performances and each one feels so special. As we sit and wait with the other grandparents, I often find myself catching up with my own past classmates as well as my children’s classmates. It’s such a wonderful feeling to see the sense of continuity from my generation to the next.” Karen adds: “Barry and I are always so touched by the dedication of the teachers and staff. The love and care they show is so clear in the smiling faces of the children. Our grandchildren, Russell, Ava, Max and Zoey,

perform with such pride and it fills our hearts to see them shine. Watching them grow in confidence and in their pride in being Jewish is an incredible blessing. They are so happy at Bialik, it truly feels like their second home.” Grandparent Suzanne Ceresne believes strongly in the supportive role that grandparents play in the lives of their grandchildren. She says, “Being involved in Grandparents Day reminds me of the importance of giving back. It’s not just about being present at school events; it’s about supporting our grandchildren’s learning, partnering with the teachers and contributing to the programs that make Bialik such a vibrant place. There is a profound satisfaction in knowing that our involvement helps create opportunities for all students to flourish.” Our Bialik grandparents and special friends are more than just visitors. They are partners, mentors and supporters, both in the classroom and in the broader school community. Their presence strengthens the bonds between generations, nurtures a love of learning and exemplifies the enduring power of family, community and giving back.

From early morning calls to evening texts of encouragement, our parent and alum volunteers brought unstoppable energy to the cause. Together, we reached extraordinary heights, raising $808,662 from our 952 donors, an incredible testament to the strength of the Bialik community. For Alanna Sklar, a devoted parent, volunteer and donor, the day represented something deeper. “As both a parent and a volunteer at Bialik, I’ve had the privilege of seeing firsthand the dedication, warmth and excellence that define this community,” she shared.

Alanna is a familiar face at Bialik. From helping deliver lunches to supporting the Day of Giving and serving on the Annual Campaign Committee, her involvement reflects what makes our school so special: a community that gives not just financially, but with time, spirit and love. The Day of Giving is Bialik’s largest annual fundraising initiative, providing critical support for Bialik’s Annual Campaign. While tuition covers the basics, it is philanthropy that allows our students to experience the full richness of a Bialik education — from hands-on STEM learning and academic rigour to inclusive spaces that nurture belonging and pride in Jewish identity.

This year’s success is a reminder that Bialik’s strength lies in the collective effort of parents, grandparents, alumni and friends who believe in the transformative power of Jewish education. Every call made, every donation given and every volunteer hour contributed helps ensure that our students continue to learn, lead and shine. Your support reflects more than impressive numbers. Bialik is my second family. Coming “home” every morning, hearing Hatikvah and standing proudly with the students and fellow teachers fills my heart with joy. After the October 7 war, my job truly became a mission — to strengthen my students’ connection to the Hebrew language and their Israeli pride, even while living outside of Israel.

When I was welcomed into the Bialik community eight years ago, I knew right away that I was a part of something special, so naturally I wanted to contribute to its growth and success. Giving to the Annual Campaign is a meaningful way to invest in the programs, people and experiences that make our school such an inspiring and supportive place to learn and teach.

As a Jewish Studies teacher, I’m dedicated to guiding my students as they discover who they are and who they want to become. Bialik has been very good to me in the 12 years that I’ve been here. Bialik is my family and I believe that it’s the right thing to do to support your family. The way I see it, I receive so much from the school, and when the Annual Campaign came up, I knew I wanted to give back to Bialik. And now I’m planning for the gift I’ll give next year.

In June, Bialik proudly celebrated 124 graduates, our largest class to date, at a memorable ceremony held at Beth Tzedec. The evening featured inspiring remarks from former Head of School Benjy Cohen, parent speakers and the Grade 8 valedictorians, marking both an academic milestone and the culmination of a meaningful year. The 2024-25 school year was filled with experiences that reflected the spirit of Bialik, from House events and Learn In to JK/Grade 8 Buddy activities and the Graduation Trip to Ottawa. The celebrations concluded with the traditional Branch Graduation Breakfasts, followed by a ceremony full of pride and reflection. This year’s Graduation also marked the retirement of Head of School Benjy Cohen, whose leadership has shaped our Bialik community.

We are very proud that 89 members of the Class of 2025 have continued their Jewish education at TanenbaumCHAT, carrying forward the values and learning fostered at Bialik. Our alumni continue to play an important role in the life of the school. As Shiraz Meisels’19, reflects: “Growing up at Bialik forged my identity as a lifelong learner and also a strong Jewish leader. Bialik has always felt like home to me. It is a place where building relationships and empowering others is the norm. Ever since I graduated, I have dedicated myself to finding and building communities that emulate the magic of Bialik and, every year, I choose to give back to the people who helped me find my best self.” We invite all our high school alumni to join us as volunteers on our Day of Giving on March 11, 2026. This is a valued tradition where graduates give back to Bialik and support the next generation of students.

Kindergarten Gym Enhancements New, kindergarten-sized basketball nets and updated IT equipment have elevated our multi-use Kindergarten Gym, making it a welcoming and developmentally appropriate space for our youngest learners. Himel Courtyard Thanks to the support of the PA, the Himel East courtyard has been enhanced with new turf, transforming it into a safer, more functional space for active play. Students now have an inviting area for recess that supports movement, creativity and social connection. Enhancing these outdoor spaces is essential to enabling our students to learn, grow and thrive.

Specialized Printers Through your contributions, Bialik has been able to acquire a Roland Versa printer and a press, allowing students to create designs and produce T-shirts and 3D-printed objects. This technology integrates art and design into STEM classes and student clubs, helping students bring creative concepts into tangible form. Students have been

excited to use these printers in their own innovative, hands-on learning.

Senior Division Speakers This year, students had the opportunity to hear from inspiring guest speakers who brought Jewish history and identity to life. LEGO Robotics Kits We have been able to introduce LEGO robotics kits that combine programming, engineering and real-world scientific challenges. Senior Division students now design, build and code robots to complete missions on themed playing fields, enhancing their critical thinking, perseverance and collaboration skills. These kits are a wonderful addition to our robotics curriculum, elevating STEM learning in engaging, future-focused ways.
