We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the land on which we learn. We thank Elders past, present and emerging for guarding Country and for reminding us of the importance to tread lightly.

PPRINCIPAL’S RINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Shalom Kehilla, As our celebrations of Bialik College’s 80 th year draw to a close, the gloom of Covid and the cold winter days are put in perspective when we see our excited children skipping into school each day. Whilst the year continues to be a challenging one from a health and attendance perspective – both for students as well as for colleagues, the strength of our foundations as a learning community is seeing us through. Our logo is one of a tree with deep roots, and as we approach Rosh Hashanah, New Year, it is the dual roots of family and community that keep us together, thriving and learning. Another name for Rosh Hashanah is ‫עולם‬

‫– היום הרת‬

the

commemoration of the world’s birth. The Rabbis teach us that the sixth day of Creation (when humans were created) occurred on Rosh Hashanah, so the combination of Rosh Hashanah and our own 80th year is fortuitous. Most recent Bialik highlights, which will satiate your soul in this issue of Shelanu, include the Indigenous Immersion Week, the first year of our Duke of Edinburgh program, the incredible work of the College Foundation and all those who have supported the Launch Lab as well as the restarting of reunions for our valued alumni. Our children have not been short of awards – from the Premier’s Awards for the highest achieving VCE students to Bialik Rising Star, from the EISM inter-school sporting competition through to B’nai Brith Youth Art Competition, our ethos is to strive to be the best we can be. I am excited to introduce this issue of Shelanu, and whilst we traditionally wish each other Happy New Year at this time, we should also wish ‫שמח‬

‫ יום הולדת‬- Happy Birthday to Bialik College,

80 Years Young. B’Shalom, Jeremy Stowe-Lindner

BIALIK’S RECONCILIATION RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN We acknowledge the strong connection that exists between our Jewish community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Maintaining cultural practice and traditions, and historical truth-telling are crucial for the survival of both cultures. Bialik is committed to strengthening relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people so that our students develop an understanding of the history of colonisation and the history of First Peoples. Thomas Mayor came to Bialik to speak to our students and staff about the Uluru Statement from the Heart.

Indigenous Immersion Week gave us the opportunity to celebrate the journey on which we have embarked as part of our commitment to developing the College’s Reconciliation Action Plan. Deborah Farago

YEAR 8/9 BOYS VOLLEYBALL B

YEAR 8/9 BOYS SOCCER

It has been a big few months in the sporting world for the Bialik Wolves. In EISM weekly competition we started the term with a championship for our senior boys basketball b team which was a fitting end to a fantastic undefeated season. In the Year 8/9 division the Wolves won the Championship in the Boys Soccer, Girls A and B Volleyball and the Boys B Volleyball competitions. Our Primary students also joined the winners circle with the following teams claiming the District Championship in Boys Soccer, Girls Softball and Netball which followed on from the end of Term 1 which saw both Boys and Girls Volleyball and Hot Shots advance to the Division stage later in the year. Camaraderie was a consistent thread amongst all winning teams that underpinned their success. Their friendship and trust in

PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION The BCPA has chosen to pay tribute to the past BCPA Presidents and acknowledge the hard work and dedication of our Bialik families.

MICHELLE COPPEL 2002

“

With Bialik College celebrating its 80th year we believe it is fitting to look back over the years and pay tribute to the BCPA Presidents who supported Bialik. Through these events lifelong friendships have been formed. Bialik is not just a school, it is a real community. As soon as you walk through those gates whether it be Tooronga or Auburn Rd, there is a real sense of belonging and community. Being on one campus has enabled siblings and cousins to see each other at recess and lunch and with parents and grandparents having the opportunity to mingle at pick up. The BCPA continues to honour the legacies of those Presidents who have stood before through the events, volunteering aspects and the special opportunities this school offers.

My favourite events were definitely the luncheons and school fetes, and the magical musicals where we made a lot of the costumes including Joseph and the Technicolour Dream Coat and 36 Annie Costumes. I love coming back as a grandparent, it is great, so many people are still there, there are teachers from when my kids were there 40 years ago! ... You see so many people you have not seen for years. ... It doesn’t matter how long it has been, you stay connected ... I just love coming back into the fold, I love it! Had so many great memories, great lifelong friends

DIANNE GRINGLAS 1988-1993

“

I remember the excitement and enthusiasm with which I took on the BCPA President role. As a young mum of 3 kids at the school (later there were 4) I was very keen to see the school grow and prosper. The school was going through a significant transition from a Junior school to a K-12 college.

Naomi Swart and Anouche Levy Co BCPA Presidents 2022

The committee was really committed, and we loved organising events. The school fete every year and Melbourne Cup evening functions with one year over 300 coming, they were great times and great friendships grew out of the BCPA. ROSLYN LEVY 1988-1992 Treasurer and PA Representative at School Council.

Page 12

Before I joined the committee I remember Dianne asking if I could help run an event, I had no idea what I was getting myself in for. Charles told us to raise $15,000, I had never raised that amount of money before, and we couldn’t believe it when we raised around $24,000! The Cup Eve Dinner Dances were a tradition and so much fun. We will never forget the risky knitted dress or the kosher voosht which was re-auctioned 3 times! So many great memories and great friendships were formed.

KATE BEACONSFIELD 2003- 2007 (Current Bialik President)

“

I enjoyed promoting a sense of community spirit within the school. I wanted to be involved at Bialik to show my children that I valued and enjoyed being part of their school. I loved taking part in a parents’ performance of The Wizard of Oz when my eldest child was in Kinder and being able to provide gifts to the Bialik Community, such as the Playground equipment.

MICHELLE KOHN 2017 (Current parent and still volunteers)

“

Most Parents’ Associations are set up as fundraisers but to me, the most important aspect is as a “friend”raiser. I loved watching parents come together - some who were new to the school and didn’t know anyone, others who returned year after year to BBQ the Purim sausages or help the kids decide on a gift for a parent at the Mother’s Day and Special Friends stall. No matter what the situation it always felt great to see everyone working together and walking away with a big smile!

SALLY ROBIN 2019 - 2021 Almost 3 years as BCPA President

“

I remember being at a Bialik Fete when I was at Kinder and my dad was helping out at the bagel stand, and feeling this incredible sense of pride for my school and understanding what it means to be part of a community. I very much wanted to contribute to that feeling for our current families. My best memory as BCPA President was having the ability to provide a wide range of opportunities for everyone to come together even through Covid and feel that sense of belonging. It was also very exciting to be able to facilitate the footy goals for the Middle/Senior and ELC/Primary.

JEFFREY MAHEMOFF 1975 - CURRENT

“

I have loved every stage of my involvement with Bialik. Happy 80th Birthday!

CHARLES LESKI 1985 - 1986

“

I was President of the parents’ association for several years, beginning in 1985/86; a very interesting and challenging time for the school. Almost immediately on my becoming involved, the school principal, Michael Pincus, announced that he was resigning and that he had accepted a position at a Jewish school in the United States. As the representative of the parent body, I suddenly found myself on a small committee of three, whose responsibility it was to find a new principal who would help us maintain and grow Bialik. The process of meeting and interviewing applicants for the position was one of the most stimulating and important episodes of the 15 years I spent on Council. Besides the interviews we conducted in Australia, the then President of the Council, Jeff Mahemoff, the head of Jewish Studies, Menachem Zimmet, and I, flew to South Africa and Israel to conduct interviews before coming back to Melbourne to present our short (very short!) list to the executive and school council, for their consideration. (Zoom would have been so helpful in 1986!) Our selection, Ben Ami Shemer, and his lovely family, spent three years with us before their return to Israel; most of that period with our other appointment (interviewed secretly at my office), Genia Janover, as his deputy and ready to step into the Principal’s shoes when the time was right. I have wonderful memories of the period and look back with gratitude at the experiences and the contribution I was able to make.

I genuinely loved working with the teachers and seeing the passion they have for their Bialik students. Happy 80th to our Bialik Community.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YEAR 12 STUDENTS

for art lovers and collectors.

WHEN THINKING ABOUT CAREER OPTIONS?

• Principal Investigator at Serpentine’s Legal Lab which investigates legal issues and prototypes accessible legal solutions for the art tech field. • Board Director of the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. • A regular writer on art news and exhibition reviews for Broadsheet Media.

As someone who has followed a non-linear career path, jumping between art and law and back again, I would say don’t put too much pressure on yourself to know exactly what you want to do, or the course you want to study when you leave school. It might take you a few years to figure that out - and that’s OK. Give yourself permission to try different things and explore multiple disciplines.

• A Mum of 2 boys, currently students at Bialik.

IF I ONLY KNEW THEN WHAT I KNOW NOW I WOULD TELL MY YOUNGER SELF TO… It’s ok to be an introvert. It took me a long time to realise that being a quiet observer can be a strength and not a weakness. I have vivid memories of putting up my hand in class in my later school years and feeling my heart pounding at the thought of the whole class looking at me while I spoke out loud. These days I give lectures and speak in panel discussions in front of hundreds of people on a regular basis - I still get nervous, but it doesn’t hold me back anymore.

WHAT I REMEMBER MOST ABOUT BIALIK IS Pizza slices and spinach pies at the ‘OG’ - the original tuck shop. And the amazing teachers.
