The Bialik College Foundation was established in 2014. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.

Acknowledgment of Country We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as the traditional owners of the land on which we learn. We thank Elders past, present and emerging for guarding Country and for reminding us of the importance to tread lightly.

Thank you Foundation Event In February, more than a hundred Bialik community members gathered for the Bialik Foundation Thank You drinks held at the home of Stacey and Joel Dodge. The purpose of the function was to thank Bialik’s community for their ongoing support of the school, including contributing to Launch Lab, Bialik’s new home for Science and Innovation, and helping affordability initiatives, to improve access to Jewish education. It was a special evening and the guests experienced the true essence of the “Bialik Family”, with several of Bialik staff, parents, grandparents, donors in attendance as well as alumni involved in the night.

“My love affair with Bialik started in Shakespeare Grove... with a lot of our very close friendships starting at the front gate, picking up our kids. As a parent and now grandparent, I always enjoyed being involved in the school. Helping in the office in Shakespeare Grove, Parent’s Association, School Council and ‘The Shuk’. As a family we are so happy to continue to contribute for the betterment of the students, today, and into the future.” Pam Bursztyn Bialik grandparent, volunteer and Foundation Patron

Bialik Foundation

Message From Bialik College Foundation Co-Chairs the Maccabi and Bialik Foundations. This partnership took some 5 years to develop and today, just one year into its operations, we have over 850 individual swimmers across our learn to swim and squad programs and the partnership will certainly distribute a significant annual sum to each of the Foundations. This is another great example of Bialik understanding and accepting its role as a communal leader and understanding that its facilities, built with the generous support of you, our donors, should be better utilised by and accessible to our broader community. Affordability and access to Jewish education at Bialik College will always be a focus for our Foundation, along with helping bring to life the visionary projects that will ensure Bialik continues to provide a truly world-class education for generations. We are fortunate that our incredible College does not need a Foundation to “raise funds” to keep the lights on. Rather, our opportunity is to continue to provide the necessary funds so our College can create exceptional and world leading programs and projects and to make this accessible to all Jewish families. We are excited about our current projects, and we look forward with excitement to the future. Launch Lab is one of these best in class and generational projects. We are so excited to see its development as the building works progress. What started off as a humble refurbishment of the outdated science labs, has become a whole school learning project that embodies the values that Bialik was built to instil. Launch Lab is about harnessing creativity, fostering bravery, and inspiring the change makers of tomorrow. Launch Lab is also another wonderful example of Bialik’s commitment to sustainability and affordability. Rather than create a new building at a much larger cost, Bialik has repurposed an existing building, ensuring it can continue to deliver the programs and spaces that our future students will require at a fraction of the cost and with a reduced impact on our environment The project will also include a repurposing of the old science labs and provide some much-needed additional space for our growing middle school. And of course, a project wouldn’t be a Bialik College project if it didn’t have something extra special, and aside from the amazing building that Launch Lab is, it is made even more special by the fact that its spaces and its programs have been designed in collaboration with Daniel Wilson and the team from Harvard Graduate School of Education. Thank you to every one of the more than 100 supporters that has helped bring this project to life. We are so excited to open its doors to our students in July this year. Bialik College is an industry and community leader and Bialik College Foundation has adopted this leadership role by helping to create a first of its kind, joint venture NFP partnership with Maccabi Victoria called Maccabi Aquatics. The model provides a full aquatics service to the community whilst maximising the usage of a community facility and delivering a profit back to both

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and farewell Tanya Cherny, our Foundation Director. Tanya has helped to shape and implement our vision and she has worked tirelessly to bring together a community and spirit of giving, be it through volunteering or financial. As a Bialik College alumni, Tanya brought an incredible passion and enthusiasm to the role, and we will miss her very much. We are excited to welcome Hannah Wollan to the role as Foundation Director. What a wonderful outcome to have another Bialik College alumni in this role. We knew that we had the right person for the role when, during an interview, Hannah spoke with such warmth about her time as a student at Bialik and how amazing it would be for her to come home. Hannah brings a wealth of experience in community engagement, and we have no doubt that, along with Nici Schueler, Community Engagement Manager, and Frances D’Oyley Carter, Foundation Co-ordinator – Projects and Events, Hannah will continue to build on the wonderful achievements of Tanya and the team, and continue to grow the spirit of Bialik in the years to come. Together, we have combined well to establish a strong Foundation. Thank you again to each of you for supporting the Bialik College Foundation and we look forward to an incredible year in 2023. Michael Carp and Stacey Dodge Foundation Co-Chairs (2022)

Stacey has been incredibly passionate about Bialik and her time on College Council and as part of the Fee Assistance program, means that she does truly understand the importance of our exceptional facilities and programs and of making these accessible to all Jewish families. We are very proud of our collaboration and of what we have achieved together and whilst Stacey is stepping down from her role as Foundation Co-chair we know she won’t be a stranger to our College and our Foundation, and we wish her well with her future endeavours within our community. As the continuing Foundation Chair, I welcome her ongoing counsel and encouragement. Michael Carp Foundation Chair (2023)

Message From Outgoing Bialik College Foundation Director As many of you know, this is my last message as Foundation Director at Bialik. After almost four years in the role, I have a whole new depth of appreciation for Bialik, and the unwavering leadership of Jeremy and the senior team. I am grateful to have had the privilege of working with staff from across the organisation, together they create the magic that is Bialik. Thank you to Michael, Stacey and the Foundation Committee for their vision, leadership and support. Working with this incredible team inspired me every day and I have learnt so much from each of them. I leave the role with confidence knowing that our new Foundation Director Hannah Wollan is at the helm. As an Old Collegian Hannah is deeply passionate about Bialik, and brings extensive experience in the For-Purpose sector. I look forward to seeing Hannah continue the work of the Foundation while introducing new initiatives over the coming months. Fundraising for Launch Lab, our new home for Science and Innovation was the primary focus of the Foundation in 2022. The most ambitious fundraising campaign since the Gringlas Sports Centre in 2000, Launch Lab is built upon the generosity of our community of supporters. Thank you to our major donors who came on board as partners, enabling Bialik to green-light the project. We are grateful not just for their financial support, but for their wisdom and leadership. In March we held the first of our ‘Meet the Team behind the Launch Lab’ events. Although we were yet to break ground, our collaborative study with Daniel Wilson from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education was underway. The plans for Launch Lab came to life through the vision and excitement of our Bialik team as they shared their passion for teaching, and how this new space will help them inspire our children to become the change makers of tomorrow. These events were the springboard to our ‘In Your Element’ campaign, the objective of which was to engage current parents. ‘In Your Element’ gave families the opportunity to become part of the fabric of the Launch Lab at a price point that is not usually accessible in a new build. More than 100 elements on our Periodic Table have been donated, and we are grateful to each and every one of the families who supported this campaign. June 2022 saw us officially break ground on the project. The Bialik Class of 2031 (also known as our Year 3 students), were joined by our major donors, who with shovels in hand, turned the first soil. Now, almost 12 months later we are counting down the weeks until our children have the opportunity to inhabit this exciting new space. While my time as Foundation Director has come to an end, I remain a dedicated parent, supporter and Old Collegian of Bialik. I look forward to staying connected through our shared passion for Bialik. Bialik Foundation

Introducing New Foundation Director I am delighted to write as the newly appointed Foundation Director of Bialik College. I am thrilled to be part of such a dynamic and innovative community. As a proud alumnus of Bialik College, I understand the importance of affordable education and the power of community support. It is an honour for me to be back at Bialik, and I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead. I bring with me ten years of experience in the not-for-profit sector, and I am committed to enhancing the Foundation’s mission of supporting Bialik College. Our primary goal is to ensure that every student has access to the best education possible, and we continue to achieve this through our collective efforts. One of my top priorities as the new Foundation Director is to focus on long-term affordability initiatives. To achieve this, we will be launching new initiatives to help reduce the cost of education while maintaining the high standards that make Bialik College such an exceptional school and community. In addition to affordability initiatives, we are also committed to alumni engagement. Our alumni are a vital part of the Bialik College community, and we value your continued support. We will be launching a series of initiatives to reconnect with our alumni, including networking events, mentorship programs, and other opportunities to give back to the Bialik community. Finally, I am thrilled to help launch our new home for Science and Innovation, Launch Lab. This state-of-the-art facility will be a hub of creativity and discovery, inspiring our students to explore their passions and push the boundaries of scientific knowledge. The facility will feature collaborative workspaces, cutting-edge technology and resources, and we are excited to see the incredible work and future leaders that will come out of this new space. I am incredibly grateful to continue to be part of the Bialik College family, and I am committed to working tirelessly to support our community, students, faculty, and staff. We at the Bialik Foundation believe that world class Jewish education is the key to unlocking a better future, and we are honoured to play a role in helping our students achieve their dreams. Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to meeting and working with you all. Hannah Wollan Foundation Director 2023

Inside Launch Lab It is an exciting time at Bialik as we watch in awe the progress of Launch Lab now entering the final stages of development. Internally, we are currently painting, fitting out lighting and plumbing fixtures and installing cabinetry. Externally, we have begun with the landscaping on the south side of the building and are preparing to pour the concrete stairs leading out to the kitchen garden – ready to launch at the end of June. Our unique 3D Periodic Table installation “In Your Element” is currently being made, which will contain nearly 118 supporters who have sponsored and named an element. There are still a few elements and naming opportunities to support this incredible building project, so please get in touch for more information. Thank you to all the donors who generously contributed to Bialik’s new home for Science and Innovation.

Giving to the Next Generation of Thinkers Together with a generous bequest from Abe and Vera Dorevitch, these 19th century Flemish leadlight panels were kindly donated by the Dorevitch Family in loving memory of Abe and Vera, generous supporters of the College. These two panels, titled ‘Medica Mente’ meaning ‘the medical mind’, beautifully illustrate the concept of healing with knowledge, acquired through curiosity, repeated observation and experimentation, the results of which are subsequently interpreted into our own words and actions. As the sponsors of Bialik’s pioneering Cultures of Thinking collaboration with the University of Harvard, an approach to learning that is now embedded in hundreds of schools worldwide, Abe and Vera were educational visionaries and true friends of the Bialik family.

A True Community Partnership: Maccabi Aquatics Maccabi Aquatics at Bialik College has been established as part of a long-term strategic partnership between Maccabi and Bialik and will operate for the benefit of the community. In 2021, Bialik College and Maccabi Victoria announced a first of its kind, community partnership with the launch of Maccabi Aquatics at Bialik. Maccabi Aquatics commenced in term 4 2021 and completed its first full year of operations in November 2022. Maccabi Aquatics is based at the Bialik College Gringlas Sports Centre and offers a complete aquatics program including Learn-to-Swim, Junior, Senior, State, National, All Abilities & Master’s Squads and has plans for Water Aerobics and general Fitness Squads. 2022 was incredibly successful and there are currently more than 750 swimmers enrolled in the LTS program and 120 swimmers across the various squads. The Maccabi Aquatics team are working closely with Bialik’s sports department in running its curriculum swimming, school swim squads and fitness, health & wellbeing aquatic programs at the College. In the true spirit of a Not-for-Profit community partnership, all surplus funds earned will flow back into the community via the Maccabi Victoria and Bialik College Foundations. The Bialik College Foundation is proud to be part of this community partnership and will use all funds received to continue to support our College and community.

Chavayah Subsidy Program Bialik’s Chavayah Program is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for year 10 Bialik students to bond as a year level in a Jewish, Israeli, global environment with learning experiences that are life-changing and second to none. This year’s Chavayah program, in which students spend a month in Israel, engaging with its history, culture, Jewish heritage and statehood, and multi faith inhabitants. Bialik College, Australia’s uniquely inclusive pluralistic Jewish school, is leading a world first again, this time sending the entire year level to Morocco on their way to Israel.

Fundamental to its success is the College’s commitment to ensure that all students, irrespective of their family’s financial situation, are able to participate in this seminal experience. Since 2012, over 50 of our students have been the beneficiaries of the generosity of Bialik families and Foundation members who have contributed towards the subsidy program, with monies pledged distributed to qualifying families on a needs basis.

The pioneering visit will involve engaging with the contemporary Jewish community in Morocco, exploring the country’s incredible Jewish past, researching Arab-Israeli dialogue, and learning from our Muslim cousins in this casestudy of peaceful coexistence.
