As we write this message our wonderful College is entering an incredibly exciting period of growth and celebration. 2022 marks a significant milestone in Bialik’s history as we celebrate our 80th year. Given that it was just 30 years ago that Bialik’s financial position was precarious, our College community should be immensely proud of both our history as well as how far the school has come and of our success today. As we relied all those years ago on the generosity of passionate and committed benefactors, today our strength is built also on the generosity, inclusiveness and spirit of our College community. The Bialik College Foundation enables a culture of giving and supports the College’s ongoing development and success whilst ensuring that no Jewish child is denied access to our world-class Jewish education. Your generous support enables Bialik to dream big and provide the very best facilities, programs and opportunities for our children, for their children and for future generations. We are so excited to be in the final planning phase of our whole school Science Centre “Launch Lab”. Launch Lab will include an upgrade of and extension to the Library and represents a new approach to learning Science and Innovation. Bialik has partnered with a Harvard University educator to design both the space and the programs to ensure that Science and Innovation is taught in a way that prepares our students for the future. Construction for Launch Lab will commence in Term 2 and will be completed in 2023. In the coming weeks and months, we hope that every member of our College community will take up one of the many ways we are offering, to join us on this journey and financially support Launch Lab, as we embark on the largest capital development project the College has undertaken since the building of the Sports Centre in 2005. There are many opportunities to support Launch Lab. Our “In Your Element” campaign is a beautiful way to participate in the Launch Lab journey and become part of the fabric of the building. The building will have a permanent 3D art 4

Bialik is committed to sustainability and Launch Lab will be another great sustainable project. By extending and upgrading an existing building as well as repurposing the existing 25 year old Science Labs, this project will also provide additional space for our Middle School which is experiencing a period of strong growth. Whilst new facilities and programs ensure we maintain our world class status and reputation, supporting our community will always be at the heart of what we do. We are so proud to be a part of this community which, on an ongoing basis, provides means tested financial assistance to 25% of students. Our College also supported our families through a very challenging two years, by offering multiple discounts and passing on all cost savings during the Covid pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The spirit of giving was further demonstrated by many of our families who were in a position to donate back the discounts and credits offered as a result of campus closures during the pandemic. We would like to thank those families for their generosity. There are many ways to support Bialik and we acknowledge that philanthropy comes in many forms. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the many wonderful volunteers who have given their time, energy and passion to our school. In particular we would like to thank our Foundation Committee for their passion, commitment and vision to growing our Foundation. Inclusivity is at the core of all that we do at Bialik, and our approach to fundraising is no different. We recognise and value all donations, large or small, as collectively they have a significant impact. As we celebrate our 80th year and embark on this significant capital project, we hope you will join us on the journey and support the project, in whatever capacity you are able. Message From Bialik College Foundation Director While 2021 was not quite the year any of us had planned, we were once again buoyed by the strong sense of community that comes with being a part of the Bialik Family. As a Foundation our goal is to improve access and affordability of Jewish education at Bialik, while at the same time supporting and investing in the projects that will strengthen our world-class educational offering. The last two years our focus has been on supporting our families, this year we turn our focus to Launch Lab. Launch Lab embodies the values it is built to instil. Bravery, curiosity, collaboration and challenging the status quo. These same values can be attributed to our seed investors, each of whom, in their own unique way, has played an instrumental role in transforming what began as a humble refurbishment of our 25-year-old Science labs, to the whole-school learning project that we present to you today.
Frances D’Oyley-Carter joined the Foundation team in August 2021. With a passion for working in not-for-profits and education, Bialik Foundation felt the perfect fit for Frances. Building connections amongst our members, bringing together events from the intimate to large, working with our committees and achieving fundraising goals are what Frances enjoys about her role in Foundation. Having worked for another local community not-for-profit – Jewish Care Victoria, Frances is thrilled to be back working for the local Jewish community remembering fondly, during her years at Jewish Care, the close-knit, supportive, caring and giving community we are. Frances with her partner Shane have a 4-year-old daughter, Audrey, and when she isn’t working she volunteers as Vice President for her daughter’s kinder. The past 6 months Frances has enjoyed many highlights at Foundation including working with Boosa for the Rosh Hashanah boxes fundraiser, working with the Foundation Events Committee for the Launch Lab campaign and most recently working at the 80th Anniversary Kabbalat Shabbat – a true highlight for Frances who experienced the wonderful Bialik celebration. Frances is looking forward to meeting more of the Bialik community during 2022 and beyond.
Underpinned by a collaborative study with our long-term strategic partner, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, Launch Lab is the reimagination of Science and Innovation at Bialik. The number of Science labs will grow from three to six, a central collaborative space with working practical stations will invite students of all ages to challenge, question, experiment and explore, the footprint and capacity of our Makerspace will double in size and our Library will be refurbished to reflect all that we know about learning today. Our collaboration with Harvard University’s Dr Daniel Wilson is well underway and building works are to commence in Term 2. An ambitious timeline will see the Launch Lab complete in 2023. Over the coming weeks and months there will be various opportunities to support Launch Lab – from naming a major space to donating the essential items we need for functional labs like test tubes, beakers and Bunsen Burners. Our goal is to engage our entire Bialik family to come together and bring this project to life. On page 17 you will learn about our ‘In Your Element’ campaign where we are inviting families to help us lay the Foundations of Launch Lab by donating an element on our 3D art installation of the Periodic Table of Elements. We are seeking 118 supporters to claim an element. Elements start at $1800 and can be paid in monthly instalments of $50. This is an opportunity to become part of the fabric of Launch Lab at a price point not usually accessible in new builds. There is only one of each element, so we encourage you to scan the QR code on page 17 to ensure you don’t miss out. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Committee Members, Michael Carp (Co-Chair), Stacey Dodge (Co-Chair), Jodie Auster, Amanda Briskin-Rettig, Peter Eben, Jono Gelfand, Wayne Lasky, Jeffrey Mahemoff AO, Sally Robin, Anna Serry, Naomi Swart and Julia Teperson for their leadership, strategic thinking and support in the development and implementation of our Launch Lab campaign. I would also like to thank our collaborators, Picos Media and Saxall. Both these agencies are founded and run by Bialik Old Collegians and we consider them an extension of our Bialik Foundation team. Our existing Science Labs were built more than 25 years ago for a secondary school half the size of Bialik today. Although some fixtures have been replaced and minor updates have occurred, the current environment does not reflect all that we know about teaching Science today and lacks the scope and flexibility required for our 21st century graduates.

Our Kitchen Garden program is the delivery vehicle for the Science curriculum in our Primary School. Launch Lab will include a planted terrace creating an aspirational link between our Primary and Middle School Science programs.

A NEW COLLABORATIVE STUDY WITH HARVARD UNIVERSITY’S DR DANIEL WILSON The department of Project Zero at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education was founded by the philosopher Nelson Goodman in 1967 to study and improve education in the Arts. Goodman believed that Arts learning should be studied as a serious cognitive activity and he was looking for research on this as well as research into thinking. Unfortunately, he found that “zero” had been firmly established about the field; hence, the project was given its name – PROJECT ZERO – and the department of Project Zero within Harvard’s Graduate School of Education was born. Over the years since 1967, Project Zero has maintained a strong research agenda in the Arts while expanding to include investigations into the nature of intelligence, understanding, thinking, creativity, cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural thinking, as well as ethics. In 2005 Bialik began a research project with Project Zero, financially made possible by Abe Z”L & Vera Z”L Dorevitch and led by Dr Ron Ritchhart as the principal investigator and key researcher. At this time, the team at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education had a project that they were wanting to research through a school and Bialik was looking to build on the pedagogies of the schools of Reggio Emilia, that inspired our ELC. This is how and when the marriage between Project Zero and Bialik College began. For the first 5 years, from 2005 to 2010, the research and ideas were being developed and nuanced. From 2010, the research and ideas developed at Bialik and alongside its teachers were shared on a world wide scale. A book was written about the work and pedagogy that took place at Bialik and conferences were held at our school, with presenters from both Bialik and Harvard. Today Cultures of Thinking, or CoT as it is also known, is a method and practice of teaching that is embraced on a world wide scale. Many books have been written, institutions across the globe including early childhood centres, schools, universities, museums, galleries and the like have adopted the pedagogy and conferences are held in different corners of the world. We are very proud that this had its very beginnings at our school. What is exciting in 2022 is that we have the opportunity to build on this research and pedagogical relationship as we embark on the Launch Lab. Currently we are working with Daniel Wilson, the Director of Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education (HGSE). He is also

a Principal Investigator, a Lecturer at HGSE, and the Educational Chair at Harvard’s “Learning Environments for Tomorrow” Institute. Daniel has developed a research project for us that marries perfectly with Cultures of Thinking and takes it a step further. His research with Bialik over the next years is focussed on understanding collaborative learning processes in students and teachers, and assessing the impact purposefully built spaces have on collaborative learning practices. As you can see the project focusses on the design of the environment, the students’ learning and our teachers craft; three interdependent elements of rich and deep thinking and learning. Currently Daniel meets online with the Science teachers every two or so weeks to run workshops and discuss the documentation and research the teachers are doing in their classrooms. In between he meets with Caity and Michaela to ensure the sessions meet the research brief as well as the changing needs of the teachers. We are looking forward to welcoming him onto our campus when travel resumes. Together with 2 doctoral students, he is also conducting literature research around the key questions of our project and we have already received our first white paper. Daniel is also a member of the project design and build team from Ron Unger Architects, and is in regular contact with this group via Zoom and email.

It ensures our students, working in 21st century labs work on 21st century skills; risk taking, collaboration, communication, questioning, flexibility, a healthy level of scepticism and through a research lens rather than a static program. Inside The Lab As a Cultures of Thinking school, Science at Bialik values the process rather than just the final outcome. Science is the perfect vessel for ‘making thinking visible’ through practical and theoretical means. Launch Lab has been designed to support Bialik’s unique pedagogical practice where learning takes centre stage to inspire our students throughout their learning
journey. Large windows into our labs will spark the curiosity of our students, allowing them to engage with the experiments taking place within. Walls will become documentation spaces and a focus on collaborative learning spaces will encourage our students to be bold and brave in their thinking.

Thank you to all our supporters in 2021. We thank each of you for your contribution to Bialik and our Community during this challenging time.
Generations of Bialik supporters came together on Friday 14 May for an intimate morning tea hosted by the Bialik College Foundation. Guests experienced a Kabbalat Shabbat service led by our Prep students before hearing from Principal Jeremy about the challenges and silver linings of leading Bialik through a year like no other. Thank you to Amanda Ruben and daughter Milla, for helping us bring to life the spirit of Shavuot, curating an abundant feast of seasonal fruits and cheesecakes. The event concluded with a moving performance of Hatikvah from the Primary Choir. 22
