Shelanu Shalom Kehilla, As God says to Moses towards the end of his story in the Torah – after war and peace, despair and elation, revelation and violence, slavery and redemption, and indeed an outbreak of disease (tsra’at) - He says “I call heaven and earth to witness against you this day, that I have set before thee life and death, the blessing and the curse; therefore choose life.”

Positivity is a choice, and we could have curled up into a ball during the last two terms in the face of two lockdowns.

We could have taken a cautious approach to learning and curriculum, and we could have taken a backseat with the wellbeing of our community.

Yet in line with the vigour of our community, the inspiration and resilience of our grandparents, the lessons of our history, we ‘chose life’.

Digital Bialik is likely the most ambitious curricular and co-curricular online experience nationally. With a real-time, online full timetable from Prep through to Year 12, we were determined from the very start that no lesson should be missed and no learning opportunity cast aside. With extra staff and a refined day for our youngest children, we are as ambitious for our Prep children as we are for our VCE students.

We have run digital excursions to Melbourne Zoo and many other locations nationally and globally. We have conducted SACs (senior assessments) both on and off-campus. We have engaged with nationally acclaimed well-being experts to support our students, colleagues and parents. We have facilitated several programs including running competitions, Etgar (our Year 8/9 Skills and Challenge block), Bialik Rising Star, Bnei Mitzvah ceremonies, Mathematics evenings and so much more.

Digital Bialik has been an opportunity to ‘choose life’. We are so proud of our students for their resilience and positivity, our staff for their creativity and ‘can do’ approach to everything, and our parents for their support. As we prepare our Rosh Hashanah meals, it is customary to have a fish head on the table so we can be inspired by Moses’s assurance that ‘God will make you the head and not the tail.’ This is in the same book of the Torah in which he says ‘Choose Life’. Kol ha’kavod to our entire community for choosing life in what Dickens would describe as ‘the best of times and the worst of times.’

ELC Highlights Creche-Year 1

Our Bialik values of Respect, Integrity, Perseverance, Empathy and Responsibility have indeed been at the forefront of our lives as we navigated the changing landscape during these recent months.

Following the return to Digital Bialik in Term 3, our Prep and Year 1 students confidently engaged in a rich and diverse curriculum, developing their online skills, thoughts and understandings, together with their peers and teachers.

The marking of events and celebrations continued in innovative ways online – birthdays, 100 days of Prep, Jewish festivals, and our weekly Kabbalat Shabbat. Together we celebrated our students’ personal milestones and successes - students losing teeth, a new dog being welcomed into a household or family events.

In Kinder, along with weekly Zoom sessions for the children, class and specialist teachers created online learning experiences for the whole family. Our Year 11 and Kinder 4 buddy program continued online with Year 11 students recording themselves reading stories for their special friends to enjoy.

Creche children have been taking advantage of the College campus grounds and have enjoyed exploring the gardens within the school. Our infant room opened at the end of June for children aged 3 to 12 months and in July we celebrated the creche’s first birthday.

Online clubs operated twice a day with a range of activities including math and science activities, yoga, dance, Jewish enrichment and many more.

We appreciate the support of our families who have joined us in this new learning landscape and we are so excited to welcome everyone back to school.

On Friday afternoons our online program provided opportunities for our Prep and Year 1 students to connect with their peers and make new friends.

Digital Bialik In the Primary School, we are acutely aware of the need to provide learning continuity for our students. During Digital Bialik, we acknowledge the incredible fortitude, resilience and perseverance of our students, staff and families in meeting the challenges of this new paradigm.

I am confident that we have maintained a learning environment that is abundant with positivity, community and trust.

We appreciate that ‘distance learning’ is not ideal, but ‘we are all in this together’. Bialik College is one of the very few schools in the country that is able to offer a full, real-time curricular experience. In recognition of the importance of the well-being of our students, we regularly conduct surveys of students, families and staff and we work tirelessly to improve the provision and support for all of our students, academically, socially and emotionally.

We have implemented many initiatives including ‘click and collect reading books’, excursion experiences via Webex, hosted guest speakers from the wider community to facilitate investigative learning and leveraged our virtual classrooms to enable students to collaborate and discuss their thinking through our Teams channels.

Our weekly program has been developed to factor in our students’ desire and need to socialise. Included in this suite of offerings are the introduction of Havdalah, a mindful way to commence each Monday morning with positive messages and ‘#FeelGoodFriday’, a program that provides opportunities for students to meet socially with their peers.

Students can talk, play, connect or get to know new friends in their Year level through various activities, some game-based, others crafty and/or creative. This also provides the teachers with an opportunity to touch base with every student to see how they are feeling.

The African proverb, ‘It takes a village’, is so apt when describing how the whole community has stepped up during this time. Our middle school students spend time online with small groups of primary students, organising online social activities, and offering support, assurance and encouragement where needed. leaders have also supported our younger students to remain connected to Israel, by incorporating weekly sessions that build a love of the land, the culture and the people through inquiry, games, music and so much more.

For the wider community, we have also offered after-school discussions where parents and students can interact, such as our Primary Maths Games Evening. There were forums for families with panels of our own experts such as Deb Zylberstein-Reed, our Student Services Co-ordinator, and Emma Furman, Social and Emotional Learning Co-ordinator (Primary), our team of educational psychologists, as well as community experts in the field of well-being. These presentations assisted families to support their children through these uncertain and, for many, stressful times.

There are many things we do not know for sure in these times but what we can say for certain is that, “We’ve got this!”

Primary Cross Country

The Etgar Challenge and Opportunity program is offered to all students in Years 8 and 9. Students have participated annually in Tikkun Olam opportunities by volunteering at Emmy Monash, the Posh Opp Shoppe, Koala Kids and preparing meals for families in crisis with Our Village Kitchen.

This year, students participated in our cross-country competition on campus, with many of them wearing their incredible new House-coloured T-shirts! Spirits were high and in the end, the overall winner was Weizmann, followed by Szold and then Herzl. Well done to all who participated!

Bialik Wolves Running Club The most recent initiative of the Sport Department was the “Race around Australia” House Competition. Students in Years 7 to 11 were invited to join the “Bialik Wolves Running Club” on the Strava App. The app is used during sports classes to calculate the walking or running distance of each student. Each student’s distance is added to their House total which is then used to determine how far each House has travelled and reflected on a map of Australia.

The benefits of this program are: • Generating House spirit and collaboration • Spending time away from screens and out in the fresh air • Promoting physical fitness • Creating life-long positive health habits • Facilitating connectivity between students across year levels.

All three Houses have moved through Sydney and are now moving towards Newcastle on their way up to the Queensland border.

They have also been provided with sporting challenges, created businesses, made movies, participated in a Trade Taster at Holmesglen TAFE, learned the perils of Finance and Stockbroking, Real Estate and Property ensuring they are exposed to different areas of work for future career pathways.

This year, I was excited to take over the coordination of this program and started researching new opportunities to offer students in the coming terms. Then there was COVID-19! The extraordinary program that offered external speakers and weekly excursions was instantly suspended and we were back to the drawing board - Digital Etgar was born.

Digital Etgar has allowed students to continue to participate in challenging Art, Sports, Hospitality, Media, Jewish Studies and Tikkun Olam experiences online. One particular program that has been dear to my heart is the launch of our ‘Big Brother/ Sister’ program. This elective was designed to provide support to our Primary School students who may have required just a little bit of extra support during lockdowns. Our Years 8 and 9 students played games, read stories and spent time with their ‘Little Brothers and Sisters’ during recesses and lunchtimes. Now, thanks to the ‘#FeelGoodFridays’ opportunities, made available by our Primary School, older students actively facilitate academic and social experiences on a Friday afternoon.

Szold have continued their strong form and have edged their way into equal 1st position with Herzl, and Weizman is close behind.

It is with thanks to our dynamic teachers who are always willing and able to be flexible and design exciting programs that can be provided digitally through our Microsoft Teams platform.

Mazkirut Despite the significant challenges faced this year, the Mazkirut of 5780 have encompassed the true meaning of leadership, through the various displays of independence, motivation, kindness and ambition that underpinned each and every initiative.

This year’s slightly smaller leadership team, of sixteen Year 12 students, has focussed on enhancing all aspects of student life; including connections to Judaism and Zionism, daily school experiences and ensuring the community remained connected throughout the lockdown and restriction periods.

Due to the Mazkirut’s ability to adapt the year’s agenda, they ensured all students were provided a sense of normality, which allowed our Bialik community to remain united throughout this unexpected year. The six Tzevets (portfolios) included Tikkun Olam (social action), Yahadut (Judaism), Tzionut (Zionism), Omanuyot (arts), Briyut (sport and well-being) and Osher (culture and well-being).

Mazkirut traditions continued, such as Friday morning Tefillah, the annual Purim assembly, Movember, Valentine’s Day ‘Save a Child’s Heart’ fundraiser, AFL footy tipping competition, Yom Chagiga for the Primary School, Bialik Bulletin and much more. Throughout Digital Bialik, the Mazkirut ensured the continuance of Lag B’Omer programs with Primary classes, cooking videos, a recipe book, ‘Quarter Past Quarantine’ film and book recommendations and countless more initiatives, ensuring all students continued to feel involved within our Bialik community.

Ingredients

Method

1 ½ cups Plain Flour 1 ½ cups Self-Raising Flour 1 ½ teaspoons Baking Soda 1/3 cup Cocoa Powder

1.

Preheat the oven to 175C.

2.

Grease and line your baking tins – two medium baking tins are optimal.

3.

Dry Mixture: Sift all of the dry ingredients into a large mixing bowl.

4.

Wet Mixture: In another large bowl, mix together the eggs, sugar, oil, honey and vanilla.

5.

Mix the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients a spoonful at a time, alternating with the hot water. Mix well until all combined and smooth.

6.

Pour mixture into the prepared cake tins.

7.

Bake the two cake tins for 45 minutes, or until a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. (One large cake tin will need 1 hour to bake).

8.

Allow the cake to cool for 5-10 minutes before turning onto a wire rack.

Bialik College Parents’ Association The Bialik College Parents’ Association wishes you a very sweet New Year, full of hope, health and happiness.

During this rare time in our lives, spent both on and off campus, we have found ways to keep our community enthusiastic, entertained and bonded with a little bit of imagination and a lot of participation!

The retro-style House T-shirts launched in Term 1 were seen in action for the first time in Term 2 and were a fabulous success. Watching so many of the students participate in their Athletics Day sporting their coloured t-shirts in support of their Houses lifted the level of pride and competition to new heights. It was wonderful to see the Sports teachers join in the fun!

We have offered several activities and competitions for the children including Roxanne and Jeremy’s MakerDojo creative workshops and Bialik Lego Masters 2020 which was judged by our very passionate Primary School teachers Andreas, Catherine, Janis and Naomi. During the holidays, we will commence Bialik Junior Masterchef with a fresh set of judges, Bialik Chefs - Deb, Fay, Naomi and Ronit.

For the parents, we have launched our Bialik Book Club, collaborated with the College to run Q&A sessions with the school psychologists, welcomed family therapist, author and clinical psychologist, Moshe Lang, to talk with us, had a successful morning tea via Zoom for new parents and proudly supported the School Kabbalat Shabbat Le’Kulam alongside the Foundation. We are putting together a creative response from the whole school, titled: ‘An Ode to Lockdown’, which is very moving and all are welcome to contribute to this publication.

To everyone who has been involved with the Bialik College Parents’ Association over the last two terms, including all of the class representatives, we thank you for your continued support and we look forward to spending time together in person soon.

Aaron Bloch (‘04) Doctor of Infectious Diseases / General Medicine at a Tertiary Melbourne Metropolitan Hospital

While we were spared from what other countries endured in the first wave, functioning for so long in such a heightened state of stress takes a considerable toll. As a result, when we were hit by the second wave, the health care workforce (and the community) were depleted, both physically and emotionally.

The rate of infections amongst my co-workers is concerning (around 15% of active infections in Victoria currently are healthcare workers). It’s inspiring to see my colleagues - doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, ward clerks, orderlies, and cleaners – bravely coming to work despite the high risk environment. However, as more colleagues are infected, they and their close contacts must be quarantined, which leaves an even greater challenge for the remaining exhausted staff. That’s why as a community we all need to work together to get on top of this as quickly as possible. I’m so grateful to all Victorians for making the huge sacrifices that have helped us curb this second wave.

In your recent article with ABC news, you refer to the argument in the media of late regarding suppression vs elimination of the virus.

Will Stage 4 lockdown be enough or do we need to do more?

We are lucky that our leaders have taken this virus seriously and made the difficult decisions needed to contain it. You cannot wish this virus away. All around the world after initial success with lockdowns, we are seeing resurgence as societies open

What are some of your fondest memories from your time at Bialik?

One would be leading the ‘cups’ to victory over the ‘saucers” in Year 3 maths competitions in Mrs. Robinson’s class, and another would be the endless games of bat tennis at lunchtime and afterschool with my friends.

How does COVID-19 compare to your experiences with other infectious diseases?

It’s incomparable. I remember early in the pandemic – I said to my Director of Infectious Diseases, “Well, this is what we trained for’. We looked at each other and after a pause he replied, “No, it isn’t”. We both laughed.

It’s like nothing I’ve ever encountered. Each day, as we face this pandemic we are challenged in ways we could never have imagined.

It’s a bit strange to personify a virus, but COVID-19 is a truly formidable enemy. It seems that every time a challenge arises, by the time our solution is implemented, it is already obsolete. This means we need to rework solutions again and again.

From an operational perspective, we’ve had to almost completely redesign the way we deliver health care in a very short period of time.

I’ve developed my own two rules for the COVID-19 pandemic: 1.

Time is elastic - anyone who has lived through lockdown understands this. A day can feel like a month, and sometimes it feels like last month was yesterday.

2.

Never say anything with too much confidence, as the situation changes so rapidly you’ll likely be wrong within a week.

Lockdown is a blunt tool with a serious collateral impact on mental health, education and the economy. We know it is effective, but we don’t want to use it if we don’t have to. Stage 4 restrictions have certainly worked. The harder question is what comes next. When and how do we approach re-opening?

We have seen enormous pressure from various corners to open now that daily numbers have dropped below 100. In my view this would be premature as there is a high likelihood we would lose control again.

Australia has done well – a majority of states and territories have achieved elimination. But for hotel quarantine, Victoria might well have joined them. Both ‘aggressive suppression’ and elimination aim for no community transmission, but differ about how to get there. Elimination is more aggressive, with less tolerance for community cases. Suppression aims to strike a middle ground and contain outbreaks whilst preserving economic activity.

In my view, we should go hard now and achieve elimination so we can enjoy peace of mind, and open our borders internally and perhaps with New Zealand. Proponents of suppression remind us that we can never be truly safe from future outbreaks while the virus circulates internationally, as we have seen recently in New Zealand.

I agree: if we achieve elimination, we cannot return to a completely normal way of life. We still need to take sensible precautions to protect us from future outbreaks. But our collective mental health (and our economic recovery) will be bolstered when we feel safe shopping, eating out, and socialising with loved ones. Elimination is achievable and worth pursuing.

I understand you spend most of your time treating patients with COVID-19, are you also involved in the research and understanding of the disease?

My role is clinical and operational. For the most part, I have worked with a team to design our response to COVID-19. This includes creating new teams and rosters, new models of care, and trying to make better use of our hospital spaces to facilitate social distancing – which is very challenging. Perhaps most excitingly, we have designed an electronic medical record for our COVID-19 patients, and paired that with inpatient telehealth. In practice, this means that only one doctor needs to enter the COVID-19 zone with an iPad. Consultation is carried out over a secure telehealth platform to junior doctors who record notes in their office. Other treating specialists such as Respiratory physicians or Intensive Care doctors can also virtually consult patients, avoiding the risk of bedside attendances unless strictly necessary.

Reunions

The most rewarding aspect of this program is the ‘Virtual Visitor Program’. Designed by some colleagues to run in parallel with our inpatient telehealth model, this allows patients to spend time virtually with their family members using the iPads. The isolation and loneliness experienced by COVID-19 patients is brutal. The Virtual Visitor Program doesn’t replace holding a relative’s hand, but certainly brings some comfort.

When a vaccine is found, how long would mass production take to safe-guard Australians?

It’s difficult to say, but developments in the vaccine research field have been very promising. The pace of research to find a vaccine is unprecedented, with numerous promising vaccine candidates.

Locally, we can be positive about the expression of intent signed regarding the “Oxford” Vaccine and plans in place reported in the media to produce it locally here in Victoria, at Commonwealth Serum Laboratories (CSL).

What learnings can we take away to better position ourselves in the future to deal with outbreaks like these?

When times are good, it’s very easy to paper over the cracks or weaknesses in our society. I remember early in the pandemic hearing an expert say – ‘think about the weak spots, the vulnerable points in your community that is where COVID-19 will strike’.

We can see COVID-19 is disproportionately affecting lower socioeconomic areas and communities. It exploits an overcasualised work force, and spreads through workplaces where employees do not have sick leave, and worry that refusing shifts means they will not be offered any more.

Tragically, we see hundreds of outbreaks and many deaths in aged care. Devoted aged care workers are poorly paid, have few entitlements, and often work across multiple facilities to make ends meet. These are the conditions that have allowed COVID-19 to spread with such devastating consequences United States Vice President Hubert Humphrey expressed it best in 1977 - “The moral test of government is how that government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped.”

We are a wealthy country - we need to do better. When we create a more equal society, we will be a stronger society.
