Khadi- A Future Stitch 1.1 Background of the study The hand-spun cotton- खादी is of special significance to Indians Gandhiji elevated the fragile thread of cotton to a symbol of strength and self-sufficiency. With time this tradition seems to be vanishing from the city. This, even though there are many people from the older generations, who know to weave and do it often as part of their daily routine and are keen to transfer this tradition to the younger generations. Yet, they have been unable to do so perhaps, for the lack of a definite medium for knowledge transfer in those days, weaving खादी was like meditation. The rich handwoven materials are preferred worldwide. But the state of its primary stakeholder- the weavers are at risk. The handloom industry is heavily suffering from globalization and a lack of up-gradation. This suggests the program, of a Design Hub. This hub will not just be a place to learn and teach spinning and weaving खादी, but also one that produces a saleable fabric with the opportunity of marketing. The design proposes the addition of studios to learn spinning, weaving, sewing, designing, a space to sell, and additional informal spaces to exhibit, a space for research and development for the designers and artisans to learn and research new trends and techniques.

Khadi- A Future Stitch Hub can be considered as a space or network used for a connecting group of people for some desired activities. It can be a link that combines many aspects such as social, economic, and political. The intent is on reviving the खादी as not just a material but also as a movement. A Hub that provides facilities for promoting खादी. Facilities revamping खादी as a material by acknowledging people.

A hub is a place for spinning, weaving, processing/dyeing, and printing to garment manufacturing at one location and a space for fashion professionals, where they can execute their products, display them in a showroom, exhibition, desiginstituteiture, etc. on one campus. The public can access and purchase its more suitable for the fashion professionals because everything is under one roof.

1.2 Aim The aim is to design a hub to create a space that will be the culmination of activities for the खादी industry with an encompassing building experience displaying fashion from all perspectives.

1.3 Objectives •

To study & analyze the current scenario of fashion in a particular area, and occurring activities inside an industry.

To select a site and develop a space that will nurture and help the upcoming designers and manufacturers to give them marketing support as well.

•

To utilize the daylighting framework to cause the center point to feel more invigorated and to make its external piece more energized with the use of loop circulation for ever-changing views and vistas.

•

To design in contemporary style architecture which makes the entire experience pleasant.

Flexibility of the space should play an important role to attract more people and the design pattern should be a continuous loop through all levels.

•

Hub does not focus on the quantitative data of the production of fabric.

•

This hub is limited to only the manufacturing of खादी fabric from the after stage of raw material or final design which means the production of raw material is not part of this hub.

Circulation & Zoning

Tarun Tahiliani Design Pvt Ltd is one of the leading fashion design companies in India. The new building for the Tahiliani Design headquarters is a three-storied structure in exposed RCC and brick. It houses space for apparel production, administration, studios for designers, and a showroom. Gurgaon Sector 37 is an industrial area characterized by densely plotted developments and a lack of outdoor/recreation spaces. Because of the general banality of its context, the building is almost forced to behave as an introverted box.

The project aims at creating inward-looking spaces around a garden, like a traditional cloister, a calm environment ideal for long hours of work. The studios and offices are suspended above the buzz of production located on the lower floors, getting zenithal light-adapted for precision work. The construction is rectangular with numerous skylights giving subdued light to the working spaces, adapted to the harsh climate of Delhi. Assembly production and embroidery are located in the basement and on the ground floor. The first floor is assigned to the design studios and the sampling. The trial rooms, showroom, personal design studio, and offices for the executives are located on the top floor. The production area on the ground floor is the heart of the building with its vaulted skylight and magnificent double height.

The building is an exposed reinforced cement concrete structure supported on large mushroom columns and flat slabs, allowing beam-free office spaces with generous height. The central grid of mushroom columns in the production hall transforms the flat ceiling into a vault with a skylight in between. The vault forms the planters for the upper floors. The main design studio areas get a double-height space with one side of the hall looking from below, at the hanging gardens on either side of the courtyard. On the upper floor, there is a terrace garden above the skylight - a garden enclosed in a noisy and dusty area of the industries. The Main atelier of the fashion designer is placed in another vaulted space on the second floor looking onto the garden.

2.2.5 Architectural style The project has used exposed ordinary bricks for the external facade giving the precinct a warm character. The arched shape of the structure is inspired by the Islamic monuments of Delhi, reinterpreted into a contemporary design. The entrance is an entre-Deux created out of a vault open in the center between the 2 T-shaped pillars, the logo of Tarun Tahiliani design firm. The entrance faces East, and it is almost surreal when people enter the factory in the morning with the morning sun beaming through the building in the foreground.

The use of exposed RCC and brick arches as a visible structure. The design decision to use RCC with bricks and display the structure was taken at an early stage of design to achieve a sense of craft in a commercial building. The client, being a fashion designer, had a deep requirement that the history of

Khadi- A Future Stitch Delhi’s architecture, as well as the craft used in his garment, should be reflected in the making of his headquarters.

Moving away from the mundane skin-deep appearance of corporate buildings, the project aims at an Indian contemporary aesthetic, blending traditional materials like a brick with a highly skilled exposed concrete structural framework.

The Tarun Tahiliani Design Headquarters is an attempt to demonstrate that a responsibly designed industrial building can break the stereotypes of mundane architecture and become a crafted structure binding together tradition and modernity, in that sense can become sustainable ecologically, historically, and sociologically. Here are the points that need to be considered: The structure allows for cavity walls with 50 mm insulation, a heavy-duty planted terrace garden, and RCC chajjas that protect all the exposed facades glazing. The glazing is high-efficiency double glazing.

The central vault and courtyard allow sufficient and controlled natural light to work without artificial light during the day.

The Tarun Tahiliani design headquarters, a nominated project for the aga khan architectural awards is today recognized as an alternative way of designing industrial buildings in India. It is opening a path of integrating the history of Indian archetypes, crafts, as well as construction materials such as brick and 23

Khadi- A Future Stitch concrete in the process of making an energy-efficient building. In that sense, Tahliani Headquarters achieves the real meaning of sustainability.

Architectural style The architecture of the academy needed to be a confluence of modern adaptations of traditional IndoIslamic architectural elements and passive cooling strategies prevalent in the hot-dry desert climate of Rajasthan such as open courtyards, water body, a step-well or baoli and jaalis (perforated stone screen).

The institute creates interactive spaces for a highly creative student body to work in multifunctional zones which blend the indoors with the outdoors seamlessly. The radical architecture of the institute emerges from a fusion of the rich traditional building knowledge bank and cutting edge contemporary architecture.

Architectural style The main function of this Board appears to be to encourage , assist and run Khadi and Village Industries in the State , but in order to achieve this end the Board besides other works has to arrange the supply of raw material , tools and implements for Khadi and Village Industries and also it organises the sale of the finished products . It also runs the training and production centres and the products of such centres are sold systematically by the Board in the market. It is immaterial for the purpose of deciding this question to find out as to how the profits earned by the Board by these activities are utilised.

The project for the Design and Fashion Museum provisional premises provides intervention in the old Banco Nacional Ultramarino building on Rua Augusta, situated at the heart of Lisbon’s historic city center.

The building was designed by the architect Cristino da Silva (initiated in 1952) and was characterized by a ground floor, entirely dedicated to client service with a strong urban relationship to the streets surrounding the building and, most importantly, an atmosphere distinguished by the solid nature of the 35

Khadi- A Future Stitch materials used and the sophistication of the construction undertaking. This was the most Viennese of Lisbon banks, with a stone counter capable of defining the design of the entire space in itself and an interrupted interior that reveals the proportions of the building block from the inside.

At the beginning of this decade, the bank changed hands and was adulterated via a series of structural works that were halted to preserve the heritage that the building represented. Since then, the building has been without its original fittings and the concrete structure is visible. In 2009, Lisbon City Council acquired the building to house the Design and Fashion Museum. The project that we designed is for the museum’s provisional premises, with an area to display the collection, space for temporary exhibitions, a bookshop and café, and also an area for cultural events with a capacity for one hundred people.

Khadi- A Future Stitch The architectural proposal is based on our first reading of the ground floor. This is the only building in the Baixa Pombalina area (the 18th-century city center planned by the Marquis of Pombal after the earthquake of 1755) where one can have a full perception of the configuration of the whole building block from the inside as well as an interrupted view of the streets around it. We departed from this unique characteristic and proposed a new program without building any walls and with limited demolition work, to clarify the perception of the space.

The intervention in MUDE is primarily made with LIGHT. The non-material element of light is used to draw attention to the exposed concrete and most importantly to the collection, with artificial lighting wrapping around some of the building elements. The project is further characterized by the expressionist presence of the exposed concrete structure and by the industrial materials that were used – SCAFFOLDING CANVAS, which alludes to the street and PALLETS, that were used to display. The floor was partially painted with REFLECTIVE PAINT. The design and fashion items informally occupy the space, establishing a close relationship with the visitor.From the cafeteria, with its single long cork table, one looks out to the museum through a single glass sheet as well as to the surrounding streets of the Baixa Pombalina.
