Wishing you a warm welcome to the Beit Halochem 2023 Annual Fundraising dinner. Thank you for being here tonight in support of a charity very close to my heart.

There is the temptation to take Israel for granted, that it will always be there for us, unconditionally. When I visit Beit Halochem and meet wounded veterans, it fills my heart with immense gratitude that these brave individuals have sacrificed so much to keep our country safe.

As we celebrate Israel 75, we should be immensely proud of the support that the State of Israel extends to the 51,000 IDF injured veterans, victims of terror and their families. In 1974 the first Beit Halochem centre opened in Tel Aviv, followed by state-of-the-art facilities in Jerusalem, Haifa, and Beer Sheva. For almost 50 years, Beit Halochem has been committed to, restoring purpose, self-esteem and dignity to the wounded soldiers and their families, for life.

At Beit Halochem our members have access to state-of-the-art medical treatments, both physical and mental. They can enrol in educational and sporting scholarship courses, participate in specifically designed PTSD programmes and forge relationships with our professional staff who support them in rebuilding their lives.

I would like to thank everyone who has helped to organise this evening, especially my dinner committee; Katie Cutler, Danielle Lipton, Michaela Meyohas, Jasmine Newman, Caroline Richenberg and Orly Wolfson. Most importantly my heartfelt thanks go to you, our friends, and donors. I urge you to visit one of our Centres when you are next in Israel so you can see first-hand the wonders that take place each day.

As we celebrate the momentous 75th anniversary of Israel’s independence, we take a moment to pause, reflect, remember and express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have made tremendous sacrifices for the establishment and preservation of the Jewish state. The unwavering commitment and bravery of our armed forces, both past and present, has contributed immensely to the security and prosperity of our nation.

In this light, we acknowledge and express our heartfelt gratitude for the vital work that Beit Halochem UK (BHUK) does in providing exceptional rehabilitative services and life-long care for our courageous veterans and their families. The comprehensive support offered by BHUK, encompassing physical, psychological, and occupational assistance, cannot be understated.

The Hebrew word ‘lochem’, from which Beit Halochem derives its name, means ‘warrior’ and it has the same root as the word ‘lechem’ meaning ‘bread’. What is the connection between the two?

When we make a blessing over bread, we thank God, ‘who brings forth bread from the earth’.

Yet, God Himself does not provide the bread. He provides the grain from which people are able to make bread. The blessing teaches us the powerful lesson that nothing comes to us without toil and exertion. If we take responsibility for investing the effort into growing the crops, processing them into ingredients and then taking the time to mix and bake them, only then will we be rewarded with the staple food for our physical sustenance. So, too, with a warrior. No person is born a soldier. They need countless hours of training, learning and honing their skills to be able to protect us. If we take our responsibility to invest in our defence forces seriously, then we can benefit from safety and security.

Beit Halochem exists because it understands that an essential part of that responsibility is the care we provide to soldiers when they can no longer serve as our ‘warriors’. The commitment that we show to the wellbeing of those who put their lives on the line for the protection of the Jewish State, is absolutely essential for Israel’s future.

I am immensely proud of the role that British Jewry takes, through Beit Halochem, in sharing this important responsibility and I thank all of you who are outstanding partners in this sacred endeavour.

June 2023 Dear Friends, On the occasion of the 2023 Beit Halochem UK Annual Gala Dinner I would like to take the opportunity and extend to all of you our deepest and most sincere gratitude for the continued solidarity and friendship our brothers and sisters in the UK have shown Beit Halochem and the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organization.

As we mark Israel’s 75th Independence Anniversary, we rejoice in the achievements of our remarkable country. Alongside the joy and celebrations, we do not rest for a single moment. The task ahead of us remains the wellbeing of our thousands of members. No stone is left unturned as we work hard to ensure that their rights and benefits are upheld.

New programs are introduced to assist the new, younger members, special programs empowering women veterans have been inaugurated and the successful frameworks assisting hundreds of disabled veterans struggling with PTSD continue to be implemented and expanded at our four Beit Halochem centres. We are renewing the construction on the fifth Beit Halochem in Ashdod and hope that within the next couple years we will be able to inaugurate it for the thousands of members living in the southern coastal region.

All of these and more, could not take place without the ongoing support and partnership of our friends in the UK. The History

Beit Halochem UK

In 1949, following Israel’s War of Independence, the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation (ZDVO) was established to provide care and support for the 6,000 wounded veterans of the Israel Defence Forces.

The main objectives of the ZDVO are to improve the quality of life of wounded veterans, to safeguard their legal rights and to promote their interests through legislation or economic and social measures. In 1974, the first Beit Halochem rehabilitation centre was established in Tel Aviv to care for the complex physical and emotional needs of wounded IDF veterans. Sadly, new members join the organisation every day, having been wounded during active service or while defending the country against acts of terror.

With the horrific toll from the rise of terrorism, the organisation has expanded its membership to allow victims of terror to use its unique facilities. Unfortunately, in Israel’s relatively short history, the organisation has continued to expand; today it numbers over 51,000 members.

Beit Halochem UK is a UK registered charity devoted to raising awareness and funds for the Beit Halochem rehabilitation centres in Israel. The State of Israel, with its many challenges and limited resources, cannot cope alone with providing for all the needs of the wounded veterans and, as their numbers grow, the funding needs of the four Beit Halochem centres also increase.

Beit Halochem relies heavily on its affiliated organisations, including Beit Halochem UK, to help it carry the burden of giving its members as normal life as possible.

Funding from supporters around the world enables Beit Halochem to continue ongoing programmes, develop new initiatives and purchase much needed equipment for the centres.

Today we are celebrating the eleven-year anniversary of the establishment of Beit Halochem UK. We are proud that the charity has helped support over 51,000 IDF injured veterans, victims of terror and their families. Together we have raised more than £26 million. Beit Halochem is grateful for all the support it receives from organisations and individuals across the UK. If you are visiting Israel this year and would like a personal tour of one of the centres, Beit Halochem UK would be happy to facilitate this.

Beit Halochem Facilities Beit Halochem, meaning ‘House of Warriors’, was established to provide wounded IDF veterans and victims of terror with a rehabilitative infrastructure where they receive respite and the opportunity to regain the dignity and quality of life they deserve.Today, the 51,000 Beit Halochem members are given a new lease of life at our four rehabilitation centres based in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Beer Sheva. They remain members of the organisation for the rest of their lives.

With help from donors, a fifth and final rehabilitation centre is being built in Ashdod. This new facility will accommodate 6,700 veterans (together with their families, this amounts to more than 14,500 people).

The Beit Halochem centres provide a blend of exceptional rehabilitative services including physiotherapy, hydrotherapy and chiropractic treatments conducted alongside social and specialised sport options, educational programmes and a vast range of creative activities. Each centre offers a wide choice of physical and social activities, housing an auditorium, multipurpose gymnasium, classrooms, fitness rooms, occupational and physical therapy units, trauma therapy units, a cafeteria, offices and a social wing.

The power of sport

A support network for life

For people with a disability, sport encourages positive health and wellbeing as well as social inclusion.

Whether as recreation or something more competitive, there is a reason why sports are recommended for both able bodied and disabled individuals: because they help one feel as though they’re a part of something. It’s where many important social skills are learned, including acceptance of the disability, support of comrades, and the value of competition.

A very important feature at Beit Halochem is the meeting of “generations”, bringing together young and old which teaches veterans to adjust to the difficult and complex world of disability. The Young Members Club also provides activities for the younger members of the organisation including outings and trips abroad.

Family members are encouraged to join in the many activities on offer and special attention is given to members’ children including the provision of playrooms, childcare, parties and social events, enabling the entire family to become actively involved in the lengthy process of rehabilitation.

Research has revealed that increased participation in sport results in a significantly better quality of life. A large number of veterans who have taken on new adaptive sports at Beit Halochem have gone on to achieve Paralympic success and compete in worldwide Paralympic games including in wheelchair tennis, wheelchair basketball and swimming.

Beit Halochem Centres

Tel Aviv Beit Halochem Tel Aviv opened its doors in 1974, after the Yom Kippur War. It was built on seven acres of land allocated to the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation by the late Yehoshua Rabinovitz, then mayor of Tel Aviv. The principal contribution for the centre was provided by the Aktionskomitee “Pro-Israel” of Switzerland. The 10,000-square-metre complex includes a multipurpose gymnasium, classrooms, treatment rooms, rest accommodations, culture halls, cafeteria, indoor swimming pool, massage and hydrotherapy unit, shooting gallery and a 350-seat auditorium.

The grounds include outdoor playing fields and an Olympic-size swimming pool. About 5,500 veterans, living in the country’s central region, are active members in Tel Aviv. Including their immediate families, the overall number of participating members comes to 16,000.

Jerusalem The Beit Halochem centre in Jerusalem opened in 1994, for the benefit of the members of Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation living in and around the Jerusalem area. The facility grounds encompass some ten acres of beautiful landscaping, in the south-western part of Jerusalem, between the new suburbs of Gilo, Malcha and Givat Masua, with panoramic views of the Judean hills.

The construction of the facility was made possible through the contributions of Friends of Beit Halochem Organisations, from all over the world, and especially, by virtue of the 5.5 million dollar legacy bequeathed by the late Aladar and Iby Fleischman.

The 6,750 sq. metre Jerusalem stone complex boasts a large multipurpose gymnasium, an indoor swimming pool, auditorium, physiotherapy treatment and fitness rooms, classrooms, tennis courts, shooting range, table tennis, billiard hall and spacious parking lots. 3,500 disabled veterans are currently enrolled at the centre. Together with their families, the centre serves some 9,000 members.

Haifa The Beit Halochem centre in Haifa opened in 1986. The Brith Sholom Foundation in Philadelphia undertook the major portion of the facility’s funding. As a result of its unusual architectural features, it is considered one of Israel’s more interesting buildings.

Situated on the western slopes of the French Carmel, the complex covers about 7,000 square metres. The three-story building houses a social wing, 180-seat auditorium, multipurpose gymnasium, classrooms, fitness rooms, indoor swimming pool, shooting gallery, cafeteria and offices. Over 2,500 disabled veterans who live in the north make up the active membership, with a total of 8,000 participating members including families.

Beer Sheva Beer Sheva’s Beit Halochem opened its doors on January 2011. With over 1,500 registered members, it serves a community of more than 3,000 members and their families residing in Beer Sheva and the Southern District.

The 5,500 sq. metre facility is built in the city’s eastern section on an area of 4.4 acres allocated to the ZDVO by the Israel Lands Authority. The complex features a semiOlympic swimming pool, a sports hall, hydrotherapy pool, a physiotherapy wing, fitness hall, table tennis and billiards halls, a multi-purpose events hall, outdoor basketball and tennis courts and a wide array of sports, cultural and leisure activities for the members and their families.

The Veteran Games 2023 Veterans Minister Johnny Mercer has heaped praise on the wounded British military heroes who took part in the third Veteran Games - and looked forward to returning next year “if I dont get kicked out of the job again”.

A total of 62 veterans from across the forces and the country competed, danced and ate like kings and queens during five unforgettable five days, where they were cheered all the way by their families.

The Games - conceived by Beit Halochem UK in 2019 - saw injured vets meet and take on their Israeli counterparts in swimming, X-fit and shooting at Beit Halochem’s state-of-theart centre in Tel Aviv, while their kids enjoyed a football camp with coaches from Maccabi Netanya. The 180-strong delegation also toured Jerusalem, swam in the Dead Sea and participated in a moving memorial service at the military cemetery in Ramle.

Mercer, who is himself a veteran, said: “When I came back from my third tour in Afghanistan, I struggled to readjust to normal life. It was running up the Cornish moors, swimming in the river and walking to the local pubs that helped.

“You should all be proud of your incredible strength and achievements. Please do share your experience at the Veterans Games with others, it is so important that we promote sport for what it can be - not only a vehicle to recovery but a way to come together as a community, to support each other and cheer others on.”

He hoped that his visit to the Games would strength his mission to make the UK the best his to be a veteran in the world. “The Veterans Games gave me valuable insights into veterans support in Israel,” he said. “I also had the opportunity to meet with experts in rehabilitation and advances like robotic leg braces, and we agreed to keep talking to each other to share expertise in both countries.”

What an eye-opening experience.

First and foremost it’s a country I didn’t know much about and any knowledge I did have was mostly bad due to the British press. It was the opposite. A beautiful country with a lot of history and tradition and culture with the most welcoming people.

Words can’t give the week in Israel the justice it deserves. I didn’t see disabilities but rather people achieving so much. Now we are all home we can all still achieve so much. Israel, the competition and everyone involve will stay with me for the rest of my life. I hope the Games impact many more veterans over the coming years.

I was blown up in Iraq in 2003, losing my sight and breaking practically every bone in my chest and back. I was later diagnosed with PTSD in 2017.

Though I’ve got vision back in one eye, I struggle to leave the house due to anxiety and deliberately put myself forward for the Games to push out of my comfort zone. After hearing about the experiences of the UK and Israeli veterans at the opening ceremony, I broke down in tears. But I was comforted by total strangers that night which changed me within and on day four I took myself away from the group at the beach and hit the market and art galleries of Tel Aviv. I spoke to the locals and it was amazing.

Wellbeing Educational Programme

In 2022 BHUK started a project in schools, taking veterans to share their stories of rehabilitation. They are honest about their struggles and the importance of resilience to overall wellbeing. They connect with young people in a way that “Experts” simply, don’t. In the final quarter of last year, over 1200 teenagers from a diverse mix of schools heard directly from UK veterans. One veteran in particular, Christopher Hayes (Former Royal Marine) who was medically discharged in 2017 with an alarming cocktail of mental health problems has found the programme to be extremely helpful for his rehabilitation. Christopher recently shared his heartfelt story with more than 600 pupils at JFS School. Dr David Moody, headteacher at JFS, told Beit Halochem CEO Spencer Gelding, “I have watched many speakers in many assemblies over the last twenty years and this is, without doubt, one of the most moving and honest accounts that I have ever heard of hardship and the battle to overcome it. The pin drop silence was the sound of students visibly moved by the story to which they were listening”. Christopher commented, that he was “in awe of the intellect, profundity and depth of the questions/conversations that he had with the pupils at JFS. BHUK have been inundated with requests to bring UK Veterans to other Jewish and non-Jewish schools, both private and state schools throughout the country.

PTSD Programmes

“I knew the terrorist well – we even had coffee together two weeks before the incident; he worked for 17 years for my boss, everyone knew him”, adds Steinhart.

at Beit Halochem Centres • The strengthening programme which is a group therapy programme that provides the participants with tools to overcome their daily challenges, assists them in changing their behavioural patterns and enables them to have a better quality of life. The programme follows the Twelve Step programme that is known worldwide and is used as an impactful rehabilitation tool both for the individual and their family.

By the end of the programme the participants are in a new place, where they believe in themselves and their abilities to proceed with the rehabilitation process - both with the practical tools they received and together with the group of equals that became a real family. Most of all they return to being active citizens and volunteers in the Israeli society.

What is PTSD? PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) is an attack of anxiety among people who have undergone significant trauma during their military service.

People suffering from PTSD are unable to free themselves from the experience, which remains with them whether they are awake or asleep.

Many of Israel’s wounded veterans suffer from both physical and psychological challenges. Statistics indicate that 5,100 men and women of Beit Halochem men suffer from PTSD. Beit Halochem understands the seriousness of this insidious condition. In recent years special emphasis has been placed on creating programmes and activities specifically aimed at assisting those members that suffer from PTSD at our centres. Beit Halochem staff work hard to engage these members in occupational therapies that involve service to others.

Activities for IDF Disabled Veterans, Victims of PTSD • Social support group which enables participants to identify with one another, strengthen and support each other on a daily basis.

People suffering from PTSD frequently find themselves alone and isolated. In the group framework, the person meets other people with experiences that resemble his experience – people who understand what he is going through. The possibility of becoming part of a group of people with a shared experience is extremely important in rehabilitation.

• Workshops in a setting in nature - Forging group unity in a setting in nature with the help of professionals and through the integration of empowering outside activities.

• Meetings for a group of spouses of young PTSD victims which are aimed at giving an understanding of the substance and difficulty of the injury in the framework of the family.

• Dog Training Activity - An initiative by a couple of the members who served in the Canine Corps, and suffer from PTSD to allow a group of 10 members to bring their dogs (or are given a dog – if they don’t own one themselves) and spend a couple of hours working with a professional dog trainer who helps them learn to communicate with their dogs. This often proves easier for them than communicating with people and is often a first step towards coming out of their isolation.

• Sport activities such as billiard and wall climbing, which demand focus and concentration, something that is extremely difficult for PTSD sufferers, have proven to have an amazing healing effect. Wall climbing was introduced by a young veteran, a leg amputee, who suffers from very severe PTSD. After he had taken part in a trial session, he noticed that after a few months of persevering with this activity several times a week, he was able to completely stop taking his psychotic medications and found great comfort and satisfaction after each session.

Amit Steinhart After being seriously wounded in a terror attack in 2017: “I’m not in a wheelchair, yet my disability is no less difficult.”

“My soul is no longer the same” Amit Steinhart, PTSD-disabled veteran, tells about how he copes with the challenges of the invisible injury that changed his life: “It is very difficult to be in crowded places, with strangers, and above all, to go out of the house.”

Amit Steinhart, who was gravely injured during a close-range shooting attack near the settlement of Har Hadar in 2017, talks about that “invisible injury” – the post-trauma that he carries with him since that day.

“Post-traumatic do not normally show physical symptoms – and if they do – they are usually unnoticeable”, says Steinhart. He further explains: “Post trauma is characterised by mental strains, not physical. In my case, I experience great difficulties being in crowded places, with strangers, and in general when I need to leave the house. My injury is both physical and mental – so unfortunately, I must face both worlds. My physical injuries are not visible on the outside. When I stand, no one can notice I am an IDF disabled veteran, or disabled at all; but then I roll up my shirt, they see my scars and the real story is revealed.”

The attack that changed his life occurred in September 2017. Steinhart, then the military security coordinator of Har Hadar, was severely injured after a Palestinian terrorist from the village of Beit Surik came to the gate and shot dead Border Policeman Staff Sergeant Solomon Gavriya and two security guards, Yousef Ottman and Or Arish. “I was seriously injured during the shooting. Three of my friends were fatally wounded and died at the scene”, recounts Steinhart. “Eventually, after a short gunfight, we managed to kill the terrorist. As a result, I knew then that my life had changed completely.”

“I almost died; I was bleeding heavily, and the quick response from Magen David Adom was the light that saved my life”, he says. “When I recovered from surgery, I realised that beyond the physical wounds, my soul and mind weren’t quite the same.

It was very hard for me to deal with the presence of the doctors who came in to check me; I always needed to have someone with a familiar face next to me, and even then, I couldn’t bear to be touched.

It had to do with the soul – I was injured in such a painful and delusive way, it happened so fast, that in the course of it my soul also got injured.”

In response to the question whether the government and other organisations are filling their duty effectively with regard to the PTSD phenomenon: According to Steinhart, “the attention given by the government and the political establishment to PTSD victims is greatly appreciated”; however he claims that “there is much more to be done. My case was well recognised and quite expected – the doctors predicted I would suffer from post-trauma even before I knew what it was.”

“I must highlight and praise the wonderful work done by the Ministry of Defence and in particular the Zahal Disabled Veterans Organisation – they are always there for us, they care about us, and they support us in every possible way, above and beyond; and of course, professional experts such as the AHIAD group [of Beit Halochem], established by Uri Ehrenfeld. Ahiad is a group of people, who help PTSD veterans, like me – they all understand and feel what we go through. Ahiad is a warm house for us. There, we embrace and hug each other; we share our feelings, the trauma – they provide us the supportive environment to enable us to reduce and cope with the burden of PTSD. Uri does so much for us – he organises activities, field trips – every week we have a different programme.”

Today, he concludes, “I stand on my own feet thanks to them.”

Educational Scholarships Beit Halochem is committed to providing the best possible care for the 51,000 wounded IDF veterans and victims of terror living in Israel.

Through the provision of their four Rehabilitation centres spread across the country, Beit Halochem offers a blend of sporting, creative, social and rehabilitation facilities which help members to maintain physical fitness and emotional well being. Beit Halochem also assists each member to reach his or her potential academically with a view to looking towards the future.

The scholarship process Beit Halochem offers scholarships for BA, MA and PhD studies as well as for vocational studies at any higher academic institution recognised by the Israel Ministry of Education Board of Higher Education. Every wounded veteran can apply for a one-year scholarship. They can reapply each year if they wish. In order to qualify, they must prove they have already studied for one academic year to demonstrate their commitment.

Between 500-600 wounded veterans receive scholarships each year. In 2021-22, 496 Academic and Professional Training Scholarships were handed out (totalling $617,000 USD) to Beit Halochem veterans. The amount of the scholarship depends on the disabled veteran’s disability and socio-economic situation coupled with the amount they have already paid.

Support for academic scholarships Funds for academic scholarships are raised within Israel and through donors around the world. We hope to continue assisting our members through this important project. Donors can choose the type of course they wish to donate to (for example engineering, medicine) as well as the institution.

Each scholarship recipient receives the donor’s name and any further information the donor wishes to provide and many of them send a personal thank you letter and updated information on their progress. The donor receives the full details of the scholarship recipient including the name of the institution or University and the faculty. Donors are invited to attend the scholarship distribution ceremony and to personally hand out their donated scholarship to the recipients.
