MATISSE MUSEUM

The world of Henri Matisse in the exceptional setting of the Villa des Arènes de Cimiez.

Inaugurated in 1963 in the Villa des Arènes, the Matisse Museum houses donations to the City of Nice from Henri Matisse (1869-1954) and his heirs, i.e. nearly 600 works and 130 objects that belonged to the artist.

MASSÉNA MUSEUM

Riviera winter resort villa, a journey through art and history. Through its collections, this museum evokes the art and history of the Riviera from the attachment of Nice to France until the end of the Belle Epoque.

ANATOLE JAKOVSKY INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM OF NAIVE ART

The château of naive, raw, singular art. Anatole and Renée Jakovsky devoted their lives to legitimising naive art and bringing together a unique collection. The museum now presents the most famous naive artists.

Meet the first people of Nice. The Terra Amata Prehistory Museum is located on the site of the excavation of the site of the same name which delivered up the oldest homes in the history of Humanity, dating from 400,000 years before our era.

2023 marks the sixtieth anniversary of Le Tas de Charbon, a work inscribed in the imagination of the public as emblematic of the provocative, radical, transgressive nature of contemporary art as a whole. The exhibition presents: Le Tas de Charbon, Goudrons (paintings), Portraits Noirs (Photographs), Macadam (film and photographs), the book “Noir et Relief Cartons”.

The three artists who won the 2018/2019 prizes for young creation from the City of Nice and the Venet Foundation - Mouna Bakouli, Amentia Siard-Brochard, Johan Christ-Bertrand - present paintings, drawings, sculptures, installations, and videos and demonstrate the diversity of artistic practices of young talents trained in Nice at the ENSA of Villa Arson. This exhibition is part of the policy of the City of Nice to support young creation and dissemination.

L’ARTISTIQUE AND THE FLAGSHIP OF THE SCHOOL OF NICE

ARMAN, BEN, CÉSAR, l’ABC de la Collection Donation Ferrero

The works of Arman, Ben and César, close friends of Jean Ferrero, represent nearly 15% of the collection. They are the ABC of this collection, even its DNA. This temporary exhibition offers more than thirty works by these three artists, some of which are previously unseen.

| DON’T MISS | Retrospective of Martine Doytier

From 9 September 2023 to 24 February 2024

L’Artistique is putting on a major retrospective exhibition of the work of Martine Doytier, that artist who died too soon, at the start of her notoriety. Two of her major works are present in the City’s collections: Monsieur Martin, her only sculpture made in 1975, and the Unfinished Self-Portrait, 1979 -1984. Discover her unique, singular works.

Thursday 6 July, 3 and 31 August, at 9.30 a.m. The inauguration of the Palais de la Méditerranée in 1929 ushered in the golden age of art deco in Nice.

While the Americans have had a presence in Nice since the 19th century, in the 1930s, they brought modernity and changing customs.

MATISSE IN THE 1930s. THROUGH CAHIERS D’ART

From 23 June to 24 September

For the first time, an exhibition is being exclusively devoted to the 1930s in the work of Henri Matisse. On an unprecedented scale, it brings together special loans, never shown in Nice, from public and private collections. The route of the exhibition passes through the 1930s, reflecting the profound transformation that took place in the art of Matisse. His work then reached another dimension.

1953-2023. HISTORY OF A COLLECTION

To mark its sixtieth anniversary, the Matisse Museum presents a dossier exhibition which traces its history. Unpublished archives, photographs and accounts shed new light on the constitution of the museum and its singular collection.

“AN ODE TO NATURE” BY JEFFREY CONLEY

Exhibition devoted to the great American photographer Jeffrey Conley, famous for his black and white landscapes. Following the tradition of landscape photography in the United States, his works embody a plea to restore concern and respect for nature.

NAMES OF THE GODS!

Through astonishing installations in the gardens and galleries of the museum, street artist César Malfi tells the story of the ancient Roman city of Cemenelum in an inventive, creative way. When the gods of the sky encounter the gods of the street.

Lego® and men (prehistoric)

From 1 July to 24 September

MiniDariusT discovers Terra Amata and Prehistory. He explores this 400,000-year-old beach, meets Homo heidelbergensis, visits his hut. This exhibition presents the photographs of MiniDariusT, Lego® dioramas and looks back on Prehistory and the Acheulean site of Terra Amata.

PATRICK HANEZ, “RETROSPECTIVE”

Whether it’s Urbex, portraiture or culinary art, Patrick Hanez explores the world of colour as well as that of black and white. For ten years, it’s in regattas of old rigging that he finds his inspiration.

Benjamin Vautier, known as Ben, comes to the museum for a full year. A self-taught artist, he brings his precise, affectionate look which, while shaking up space, seeks to find the backbone of Anatole Jakovsky’s naive art museum created 40 years ago.

Contemporary gallery

Born in 1987 in Nice where she lives and works, Caroline Trucco was noticed at the 60th Salon de Montrouge, which each year reveals young artistic talents in France. She developed a protean artistic approach questioning the notions of exoticism, elsewhere and the Other. She led collaborative work based around ethnography in the artistic field.

THU-VAN TRAN. NOUS VIVONS DANS L’ÉCLAT

MAMAC is organising the first major museum monograph in France of artist Thu Van Tran.

The exhibition highlights the main aspects of her work: an artistic world imbued with her dual Franco-Vietnamese culture; the common history of the two countries and the visible or invisible heritage still inscribed in the language, the bodies in Vietnam; the sustainable transformation of landscapes and the issues raised around the living.

ODON. BAROQUE METAMORPHOSIS

This exhibition “Odon, baroque metamorphosis” brings together more than sixty recent braidings and designs by the artist which find their place in the architecture of the Palace dating from the 17th and 18th centuries.

THE RIVIERA IN PAINTING

Seeing the Riviera and beyond in painting, Emmanuel Costa (1833-1921)

From 22 June to 17 September

Emmanuel Costa was one of the most productive of Nice painters, one of the most appreciated by landscape collectors on the Côte d’Azur. We owe him the ceiling of the Opéra de Nice. He was also a talented portrait painter and little-known religious painter.

The Palais Lascaris Museum presents the exhibition “The Baroque from A to Z. The Chamber of Wonders. Works by the artist Sylvie T.”, which brings together more than 50 drawings, engravings, palimpsests, sketchbooks and other surprises by the artist.

A COLLECTION WITH 1 MILLION SPECIMENS

Founded from the collections of two 19th century naturalists from Nice, the museum now houses more than 1 million specimens. Reflecting the exceptional biodiversity and geo-diversity of the Nice region, it studies and raises public awareness of the riches of the natural heritage.

RICHARD ORLINSKI DECORATES THE CITY OF NICE

From 8 June to 30 September

The artist Orlinski’s will be on display as you walk around Nice. This spectacular exhibition, which can be seen day and night, features groups of ten spectacularly large sculptures. The iconic Kong, Standing Bear, T Rex, and Crocodile will be in the city, transformed into an open-air museum.
