Sturgis Main Street work complete

STURGIS — A $3.42 million reconstruction of Sturgis’ Main Street is now complete: one month ahead of schedule.

The five-block project featured two phases, with the first starting in May 2016, spanning eastward from Junction Avenue to Middle Street, and being completed in June 2016. Phase Two went westward from Junction Avenue to Fourth Street, starting last fall.

Drainage improvements, pavement and sidewalk removal and replacement, street lighting, water main replacement, and streetscaping were included in the reconstruction.

Project Manager Jason Brandsted of Heavy Constructors, Inc., credited planning for the early finish.

“We planned this project to work through the winter, which was a huge help,” Brandsted said. Crews also phased this project a bit differently from others.

“We left all the concrete sidewalk in place,” Brandsted said. “We’re doing the work in the center, and once you get the center done, then we started working on the sidewalks.”

Brandsted said that really helped with scheduling, because people were able to park a lot sooner than would normally have been the case. He added crews worked only on sidewalks after that.

Drainage improvements included redesigned storm sewers at each intersection. This included addition of more drop inlets and increasing pipe sizes

in some areas for better water flow. Pipe diameters range from 18 to 36 inches.

Phase two also involved work on the water main and all water services from Junction Avenue to Fourth Street. Mains of PVC pipe now measure 8 inches in diameter.

Curb and gutter, along with concrete fill-ins, have also been installed.

Remaining work as of May 1 included setting down the top 2 inches of asphalt, along with four concrete crosswalks per intersection.

The bottom two asphalt lifts are in place. That top lift is cleaned, with a tack coat of oil applied. The top 2 inches of asphalt are then applied.

Landscaping and planter boxes constitute most of the other work after the roadwork is done. About 70 percent of the boxes will hold a 4-inch-diameter tree, with grass also planned.

Each Main Street block would carry a motorcycling-era theme, with vertical markers becoming exhibits for historical Sturgis Motorcycle Rally stories and images. Long blocks would also include a designated midblock crossing.

Improved street lighting is now of the LED variety, which Brandsted said is considerably brighter than what was in place. More light poles were also added.

The Main Street reconstruction was a key component of the Future Sturgis Process, in which community members met to identify priority areas. The process began in 2008, with goals including industrial development, retail

development, and tourism.

A retail committee was assembled to develop a new comprehensive plan and downtown redevelopment plan.

Sturgis hired Kadrmas Lee & Jackson of Rapid City to complete a new comprehensive plan in 2010. Planners met with city staff and leaders, civic groups, and the public to receive input.

RDG finalized the comprehensive plan in late spring. It presented the proposal to the Sturgis Planning Commission.

A public hearing was held on July 18, 2011.

On that date, the Sturgis City Council adopted the 2030 Sturgis Comprehensive Plan.

The Sturgis City Council passed a 2013 resolution requesting the Main Street reconstruction to be place on the state DOT fiveyear Statewide

Transportation Improvement Program.

Also in 2013, the DOT programmed the project into the program. Construction was scheduled for 2016 and 2017.

DOT negotiations with Fourfront Design, Inc. started in the spring of 2014.

That August, the city and DOT agreed to allow Fourfront Design to complete the Main Street reconstruction plans.

Deadwood HarleyDavidson store moves, expands

DEADWOOD — Those looking for the Deadwood Harley-Davidson store in its former Elks building location need to look no further than across the street to find the new motorcycle shop.

General manager/co-owner Terry Rymer said the new location, at 681 Main St., is now open.

"The new building has been totally renovated. We gutted it from head to toe," Rymer said.

Along with the new HarleyDavidson digs comes significantly more square footage, which means more of the merchandise bikers dig.

"We recognized a fair amount of opportunity and growth in Deadwood at the location we were in," Rymer said. "But we knew that

we needed to expand in order to increase in sales. At the new location, we are able to offer customers a greater selection of product from Harley-Davidson, more display space, more fixture get, more lighting. It's our own building, so we can do what we want to do. We worked with Harley-Davidson Corporation to design the space and it's definitely a brand new state-of-the-art facility."

There are currently four employees at the Deadwood Harley-Davidson store, with more to be hired as visitor season ramps up.

"We'll be staffing up more to cover the square footage, as the season kicks in," Rymer said. "And definitely during the Sturgis Rally."

Trikers take over Deadwood during annual 3 Wheeler Rally in July

DEADWOOD — The third time's a charm. Trikes will roll in and take over town for the third annual Deadwood 3 Wheeler Rally (D3WR) July 11-16.

Organizer Teresa Schanzenbach said that the event is expected to draw 800 registrants.

"While there are several other major rallies taking place during the same time, across the United States and Canada, our goal is to be prepared for up to 800 registered participants in 2017," Schanzenbach said. "We are anticipating that 25 percent of the trailers in attendance will

do so as walk-ups."

Last year, the Deadwood 3 Wheeler Rally drew 620 registered participants from 34 states and Canada on 362 trikes of all makes and models.

"We are very happy with the way the Deadwood 3 Wheeler Rally event has grown," Schanzenbach said. "In 2016 we enjoyed a 29 percent increase in attendance over the very first year the event was held in 2015 and of the 620 people who attended in 2016, 450 of them were first-time attendees.

That same trend is being seen already this year."

Schanzenbach said the success of the event can be attributed to several factors.

The third annual Deadwood 3 Wheeler Rally will take place in Deadwood July 11-16. The rally of trikes is expected to draw about 800 people.

"Trikers, who most were once motorcycle riders, are familiar with the magnificent scenic rides the Black Hills area has to offer.

Many have stated they were here in the past for the Sturgis Rally but no longer desire that type of rally," Schanzenbach explained.

"They want to take in the destination rides and activities the D3WR offers and visit with other people who also ride on threewheels instead of two. Most of the riders are older and appreciate the culture and history

Harley-Davidson plans 50 new models over next five years to drive sales MaryBeth Matzek

Harley-Davidson Inc. leaders are counting on a slew of new models and drivers to increase sales and earnings.

In a call with analysts following the release of its fourth quarter and annual 2016 earnings, HarleyDavidson president and CEO Matt Levatich said the Milwaukee-based motorcycle manufacturer plans to introduce 50 new motorcycles during the next five years.

“The success we saw with the launch of the Milwaukee-Eight engine is a sign of the innovation we have in place. We are confident our 2018 line will also help sales,” he said. “I have never been more excited about the products in our pipeline.”

Harley-Davidson plans to increase drivers — who may eventually become buyers — by adding foreign dealerships and introducing more Americans to the Harley lifestyle, Levatich said. Company plans call for adding up to 200 dealerships outside the United States by 2020. In the U.S., the company’s Harley-Davidson Riding Academy looks to teach people how to ride a motorcycle. In 2016, more than 65,000 riders were trained through the Riding Academy.

“We do not just build motorcycles, we build drivers, too. We are focusing on the next generation of riders,” Levatich said. “We want to add more dealers overseas and grow riders here in the United States, reaching out to new markets including younger riders, women, AfricanAmericans and Hispanics.”

For the fourth quarter of 2016, Harley-Davidson’s net income was $47.2 million, or 27 cents per share,

compared with $42.2 million, or 22 cents per share, during the same quarter in 2015. Sales, however, were $933 million during the quarter, down from $1 billion during the same period in 2015. In the U.S., sales fell 3.9 percent.

International sales are a bright spot for the company, with sales outside the United States increasing 2.3 percent in 2016. Levatich said Harley-Davidson added 40 dealers around the world during the past year.

Harley-Davidson shipped fewer motorcycles overall in the last quarter of 2016 to help dealers reduce their inventory, said John Olin, senior vice president and chief financial officer. The company is doing the same for the first quarter of 2017.

Olin said economic and political uncertainty in the United States and around the world contributed to lower sales. “We believe we will see continued strong headwinds, but think the plans we put in place will help us continue to grow,” he said.

While not giving specifics about what HarleyDavidson has under development, Levatich said they “will change the way people view Harley-Davidson. It will push us into new markets. We are definitely entering a new stage of product development.”

Levatich said the investments Harley-Davidson have made in both new product development and manufacturing efficiencies will have lasting benefits.

“We will not see overnight returns, but we are making decisions that will attribute to long-term success,” he said. “We are adjusting to the new normal of U.S. market performance. We will continue to deliver what matters to riders.”

Tilting Motor Works conversion system puts the lean into trikes

As a magazine editor when a popular motorcycle company’s trike was offered to the public, my first impression after a test ride was “what a tank.” I have been riding two-wheeled motorcycles for more than 40 years, but this was my second or third ride on a three-wheeler. It was not pleasant.

When the rear wheels on a solid axle trike rolls into a dip or pothole in the road, the front fork tries to turn in that direction. Most of the pleasure of riding a motorcycle is the “leaning is turning” characteristic. No lean, less fun, it’s that simple. If you’re an experience motorcycle rider, that fact is a given. Most riders, myself included seek out and ride, the most curve endowed roads we can find. Laying a motorcycle over in a left turn, then snapping over in a right turn is akin to flying low and fast. Sooner or later I might end up owning and riding a trike, but only if I can continue to lean in the turns.

Tilting Motor Works in Snohomish, Wash., offers a viable solution for older riders like me.

If you were able to have a bolt-on a “leaning is turning” platform on your exiting motorcycle would you really consider doing so? After a little research, the answer for me would a solid, 4-star yes.

Tilting Motor Works (TMW) has designed and developed a bolt-on conversion threewheel unit that allows the rider to lean when turning and offers the stability and safety benefits of three wheels. Converting your two-wheeled machine into a three-wheeler is an easy bolt-on process. Conversion involves removing the existing front fork and wheel, and replacing it with a TMW unit.

Conversions are performed by TMW or an authorized dealer. TMW units are not available as a do-it-yourself kit. The TMW units can be removed and the original equipment re-installed if and when desired.

Having two wheels in front instead on the rear of the machine is the most efficient design for a leaning trike. A vehicle has to lean if it’s going to feel like a motorcycle.

Front conversion also establishes more traction up front, improving both cornering and braking characteristics.

A TMW three-wheeler steers, countersteers, leans and handles just like your original two-wheeled machine. If you don’t look below the handlebars you might not remember or believe that you are riding with two wheels up front.

Common road conditions that sometimes pose grave risks to motorcycle riders are negated when aboard a TMW-equipped machine. When encountering a bump, loose gravel or oil slick with one front tire, even while cornering, and the other front tire will maintain traction, for a safer ride.

A leaning, two front-wheeled equipped machine is ideal for veteran motorcycle riders who are unsatisfied with the handling or image of conventional rear-wheel systems available today. Tilting Motor Works also appeals to newer riders who might consider a motorcycle but don’t feel comfortable with the size and weight of their factory trike.

Most motorcycle riders like being able to run fast around curves. Canyon carving is fun on a TMW-equipped machine.

The rear of the bike, including passenger seating, is not affected by a TMW unit.

In addition to the leaning linkage itself, the standard conversion includes shocks, wheels, tires, fenders, brakes, the front fairing and all mounting hardware. Any parts that are removed, including the front fork and front wheel, will be returned to the customer. As part of the installation TMW will re-mount any/all stock equipment needing to be relocated; nonstock modifications that interfere with installation may need to be relocated at additional expense or removed and returned to you.

The fairing and fenders are supplied in gloss black Gelcoat. TMW does not paint these components, though they can assist in getting color-matched painting done for the customer. Painting will result in a

more uniform and durable finish; body parts should be sanded and primed prior to painting, and they should be undercoated.

If TMW takes care of the painting they will mount the painted fenders and fairing to the bike before delivery. Otherwise they will be mounted unpainted and the customer will remove them for painting.

The TiltLock system includes dual hydraulic cylinders, an electric pump, the speed sensor and other electronics, on/off switch and all mounting hardware.

The TiltLock feature is switchable.

When switched on, it will bring the bike to vertical at speeds below about 3 mph or when stopped. Because TiltLock and the front suspension operate independently, the bike doesn’t become rigid or difficult to handle at low speeds.

Can a TMW-equipped motorcycle fall over?

If you drop the bike it will usually lean until a floorboard or a crash bar touches the ground, and then stop. With TiltLock the bike can right itself from

that position; otherwise you will be lifting it back to vertical.

What motorcycles can be converted?

The current production unit is designed to fit all models in Harley-Davidson’s Touring line including the Road King, Road Glide, Street Glide and Electra Glide models. Additionally, TMW is equipped to handle Softails, Dynas, and V-Rods such as the Heritage Softail Classic, the Softail Deluxe, the Fat Boy, and the Super Glide. TMW cannot at this time convert a Tri Glide or a Spyder. Also include Honda Gold Wing models GL1800 and F6B in the models that can be equipped.

How is the unit attached to the motorcycle?

The mounting bracket bolts around both down tubes. No drilling, welding, cutting or other alterations to the frame are needed.

The standard TMW conversion is about 36 inches between the centerlines of the two front wheels and 43 inches overall.

The existing front wheel and front forks are removed when installing the TMW unit, so the net gain is only about 120 pounds.

Indian Motorcycle’s storied history is giving it momentum for the future

STURGIS — The rumble of a motorcycle V-twin is a classic sound that’s as American as the sound of fireworks or the crack of a baseball bat.

And Indian Motorcycle Manufacturing Company was one of the institutions that established that status.

Indian started out in business more than 100 years ago. When it was founded in 1901, it was America’s first motorcycle company. The gasoline engine was just a few years old at the time, and some of the first motorcycles were not much more than motorized bicycles. The size and weight of Indian motorcycles increased quickly, and the motorcycle became a legitimate form of transportation for the free-spirited and the adventurous.

Indian rode out World War I, the Great Depression, and World War II, but it finally hit a financial pothole in 1953, when it was forced to declare bankruptcy.

It was bought up by a number of concerns over the years, and its future was uncertain. It was finally acquired by Polaris Industries in 2011. Since then, the company has done well.

“Indian has expanded its market share much faster than Victory,” said Matt Hensley, the sales manager at Indian Motorcycle Sturgis, the largest volume Indian dealer in the country.

produced by Polaris. It was introduced in 1998 and was shut down in January because of increasingly disappointing sales.

Hensley says the former designers and engineers that worked for Victory are now working for Indian, and the additional manpower has been a benefit for Indian.

“The reliability that we’re seeing is excellent. It rides better. It’s better balanced,” said Hensley.

has contributed to its staying power in the marketplace, said Hensley.

“The name definitely helps. The name has been around for years,” he said.

It has helped Indian Motorcycle Sturgis sell from 300 to 400 bikes per year.

And Indian has a long history and a well-respected relationship with the Sturgis Rally. Indian motorcycle dealer J.C. "Pappy" Hoel was one of the people who started the Black Hills Motorcycle Classic in 1938, which eventually evolved into the Rally.

These days, Indian motorcycles are manufactured in Spirit Lake, Iowa, with some engine components made in Osceola, Wis. Indian has now expanded its lineup to 12 models.

The Indian Chief Classic was introduced in 2014. It has what are called “valanced” fenders with skirts that extend down the side of the wheel. It also has a lighted housing on the top of the front fender that Indian calls a “war bonnet.” It has a six-speed transmission and a manually adjustable single-shock swingarm suspension.

The Indian Chief Vintage, also introduced in 2014,

has the chassis, drivetrain, and styling of the Chief Classic, but it has quick-release saddlebags made of tan leather that matches the seats, some additional chrome, a quick-release windshield, and a six-speed transmission.

The Indian Chief Dark Horse was introduced for the 2016 model year. It is based on the Chief Classic, but painted flat black, with driving lights, oil cooler, analog fuel gauge, passenger pillion and passenger pegs removed.

The Springfield model was introduced in March 2016. It’s named after Springfield, Mass., the birthplace of Indian Motorcycles. The Springfield is a hybrid bike that has the same the steering geometry and adjustable rear shock as the other touring models. It’s also equipped with a quick-detach windshield.

The Indian Chieftain touring motorcycle, in production since 2014, is the first Indian model with front fairings and hard saddlebags. It has a stereo sound system with speakers in the fairing and Bluetooth capability. It has tire pressure sensors, an air-adjustable rear shock, and motorized windshield adjustments.

There are three other variations of the Chieftain with varying accessory offerings and trim levels The Indian Chieftain Limited has the sawed-off, open front fender. It resurrects a style offered during the 1920s and 1930s.

The Indian Chieftain Elite features complex, hand-applied paint jobs to make the bike stand out in the crowd.

"Trikers are generally a little bit older and have either already taken in past Sturgis rallies or are not interested in that type of an event," Schanzenbach said. "The Deadwood 3 Wheeler Rally gives trike enthusiasts an opportunity to come together and make lasting friendships over the course of the five days that they are here together. They talk about their machines; how to maintain them and enhance them as well as discuss other ride opportunities across North America. For the most part the participants are retired and D3WR provides a low-key, fun packed week for riders to enjoy their trikes, the rides and the people they meet along the way."

D3WR organizers work hard to anticipate the expectations and needs of the riders and deliver on the promise that they will have a wonderful time once they arrive in Deadwood.

To that end, each year, D3WR participants are asked to evaluate the event, offer suggestions for improvement, and Schanzenbach makes sure many of those remarks are incorporated into the next year's event.

"This year we will have a concessionaire, open container, more vendors and more social activities within the Deadwood Event Complex. A Walk or Ride Poker Run is also a new rally event in 2017," Schanzenbach said. "On Thursday we are incorporating an outdoor movie night where people can sit on their trikes to watch the comedy 'Wild Hogs.' The movie night starts at 8:30 p.m. and is open to the public. The public is also invited to come to the All You Can Eat Pancake Breakfast Friday morning, July 14 at the Deadwood VFW." Funds raised from the pancake feed go toward the purchase of Honor and Remember Flags and is a fundraiser for the Deadwood VFW. The Friday night Light Parade will take place at 9 p.m. and the

fairing and hard saddlebags, but doesn’t have the accessories offered in the rest of the Chieftain line.

The Indian Scout was introduced as a 2015 model. It’s a cruiser with a 69.1 cubic inch, liquid-cooled, double overhead camshaft, V-twin engine. It has a frame formed from several aluminum alloy castings. Motorcycle.com named the Indian Scout 2015 Motorcycle of the year.

The Indian Scout Sixty was introduced in November 2015 as a 2016 model. The Scout Sixty has many of the same features as the 2014 Scout, but with a smaller, liquid-cooled, 61 cubic inch engine. It is Indian’s entry-level motorcycle intended to get the attention of younger riders with a limited budget.

The Indian Roadmaster was introduced in 2014. It is essentially a Chieftain with a trunk, heated seats, heated grips, LED headlights, passenger floorboards, and a rear crash bar.

The Indian Roadmaster Classic was introduced in February. This new model has traditional styling, tan leather bags, a

For 2017, Trike Talk.com and Trike Owners International have teamed up with First Gold Hotel & Gaming, the major sponsor of the event. Powder River Trikers, a trike club from Gillette, Wyo. has also come on board to provide additional volunteer efforts and to organize and orchestrate the Show 'n Shine.

Area trike dealerships have pledged their support and this year the American Legion Riders from Hot Springs will serve as the D3WR road captains and sweeps.

"We are creating a downloadable app for the event and everyday riders will enjoy the 'Daily Triker News' to keep up-to date on daily events and destination ride maps," trunk, heated seats, heated grips, LED headlights, passenger floorboards, and a rear crash bar.

Cruise control, antilock braking systems, keyless starting, and electronic fuel injection are standard on all current production bikes. Indian motorcycles are now being offered in fifteen new colors.

It’s all a part of making the bikes more customizable and more reactive to consumer desires, said Hensley.

For the future, Hensley said Indian is considering several possibilities. There’s always the task of making the bikes attractive to a younger market, so that effort will be a continuing goal for the company. The new Scouts are part of effort, he said.

“Electric bikes have been talked about,” said Hensley. The increasing attention electric cars have been getting may also have implications for the motorcycle market. For right now, the batteries are heavy, but research and development efforts are making them lighter. Indian is monitoring the situation, said Hensley.

There will be an increasing use of new strategies such as the use of social media in marketing the bikes, he said. To get the younger market, social media is essential.

Schanzenbach said. "We have partnered with the, Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, the Days of '76 Museum as well as other local Deadwood businesses and entities such as Visit Spearfish to provide the best experience possible for the trikers coming to the event."

Partnerships continue to form and many local and area businesses have expressed interest to support the event in some way.

"We anticipate D3WR will grow to be the largest trike rally in the nation and are working to secure that position by creating solid partnerships and working relationships with the city of Deadwood, it's businesses and as well as other area communities," Schanzenbach said.

Once here, trikers get a taste of Northern Hills hospitality and many find it irresistible.

"The trike registrants love the town of

Deadwood and we have made it a point to give them additional time this year to really get to know the community and the immediate area," Schanzenbach said. "This year we have incorporated time in Lead so they can take in the mining history and cultural gems that exist only three miles away. Trikers comment on how nice everyone is, how much fun the town is and how fabulous the riding opportunities are here. They leave with positive thoughts about the area and the state as a whole."

The challenge is to take a motorcycle company with a long and storied history, and to transform it into one that responds to the demands and needs of the current marketplace.

For the present, with its eye on the future, Indian will continue to carry on the long tradition of the V-twin, strapped to a substantial, well-built frame.

Sturgis Motorcycle Museum plans expansion

STURGIS — The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum continues to raise funds for an expansion to double the square footage of the current facility.

Each of two levels at the museum — basement floor and main floor — currently spans 3,500 square feet, for a total area of 7,000 feet. This museum is at the corner of Main Street and Junction Avenue.

The expansion will feature a main floor, plus a second floor above ground.

Total area for this is 7,000 square feet.

Expansion would take place in the parking lot to the east and north, with both buildings to be connected.

Expansion focus will center on the Hall of Fame, along with related artifacts.

“We’ve found that people come, and they really enjoy the story and the heritage of the Hall of Fame more than just looking at an old motorcycle,” Sturgis Motorcycle Museum Executive Director Myrick Robbins said.

Robbins said a bit more than $1 million still need to be raised. He added almost $2 million has been raised, but some of that has gone toward repair the existing building. Improvements included new

windows, a new roof, and lighting updates on the basement level.

“It looks like the expansion hasn’t begun,” Robbins said. “But we’ve actually done many things on the existing building in preparation for the expansion to the parking lot area.”

Sturgis Motorcycle Museum’s board of directors voted six years ago on an expansion or started looking at those prospects. Capital campaign work then started.

Robbins said motorcycles were getting really packed inside the building, and studies showed a tourist and bike industries would support this.

“As of the last two years, things have really picked up,” Robbins said in describing those fundraising efforts. The project will be just a bit less than $2 million.

SPEARFISH — With Sturgis situated in the heart of the Black Hills, the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally is the venue for some of the best riding in the country.

From long stretches of highway on the scenic plains to curves and tunnels through the beautiful Black Hills, there is something for every kind of biker here.

The following is a list of our favorite rides.

Nemo Road

Off Highway 385, Rapid City to Brownsville

A nice, lazy ride through some of the less-populated parts of the Black Hills, Nemo Road offers amazing views, twisty turns, and straight highway stretches that promise bikers entertainment and relaxation. Just one trip down this road and you will understand why Sturgis Rally veterans call this “The best kept secret in the Black Hills.” The Nemo Bar & Grill also offers bikers great food and cold drinks for a scenic break from the road that is filled with first-class hospitality!

Badlands Loop State Scenic Byway

Spearfish Canyon on Two Wheels

If you’re a regular attendee of the annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, chances are you’ve ridden Spearfish Canyon at least once, and probably more frequently.

Spearfish Canyon is older than the Grand Canyon if you can believe that! It’s smooth, well maintained, and its curvaceous pavement is a joy to ride for any bike/ motorcyclist. The 35 mph speed limit allows the canyon walls to talk back to you in the form of your motorcycle’s reflected exhaust note. If you’ve never ridden the canyon, it’s about time you did. It’s an unforgettable motoring treat for any rider or driver. Keep your eyes and ears peeled for excessive speed vehicles; some riders can’t resist a little extra speed. Keep your eyes on the road though; you can stop almost anywhere in the canyon to take a longer

favorite of bikers who flock to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, this route also features natural grasslands that are filled with hundreds of different species of plants and wild animals. Scenic overlooks also offer great photo opportunities.

Custer State Park 13329 U.S. Highway 16A, Custer

Custer State Park isn’t just home to one of the largest free roaming buffalo herds; it’s so beautiful that the State Game Lodge served as the summer White House for President Calvin Coolidge in 1927.

This 71,000-acre vacation paradise is home to abundant wildlife and buffalo herds, making it common to encounter a “Buffalo Jam” while driving in the park.

Look for elusive elk, deer, big horn sheep, mountain goats, and bands of begging burros. Four distinct lodges offer accommodations to suit every family, from rustic and historic to elegant and upscale. All offer unique on-site activities, including Jeep rides to the buffalo herds, guided fly-fishing, and chuckwagon suppers. There are also endless camping opportunities in the park.

Crazy Horse Memorial

Crazy Horse Memorial is the world’s largest sculpture-in-progress, and frequent drilling and mountain blasts make each visit unique. When completed, Crazy

look at one of the many different spots of interest. Starting at the mouth of the canyon at the extreme east end of Spearfish, the road takes vehicles past the golf course and into the verdant and summer leafy steepwalled canyon. Halfway up the canyon is Spearfish Canyon Lodge, a great place for lunch if you don’t want to wait to arrive at Cheyenne Crossing, world famous for its burgers and hospitality. A quarter-mile hike down the trail-footpath below the lodge will get you to Spearfish Falls; don’t forget your camera. If you skip the lodge stop, and continue almost another 10 miles, you’ll get to the aforementioned Cheyenne Crossing at the junction of Highway 85. Make a left and head for Lead, S.D. It’s an uphill climb away from Cheyenne Crossing, and the speed limit is 55 mph. Throttle up, but stay within the speed limit. Continue through Lead, then Deadwood, and before you know it, you’re in Sturgis. See you on the Road.

Sundance, Wyo., to Devils Tower

Sundance, Wyo., sits astride Interstate 90 approximately 53 miles west of the city of Sturgis. With a population of 1,139 souls, Sundance is visitor friendly, especially during Sturgis Rally days, and hosts a permanent full service HarleyDavidson dealer with everything from T-shirts to leathers and rain gear. I recommend you start this ride during the mid-morning hours and return during the evening. If you do this, you’ll have the sun at your back both directions. Leaving Sundance northwest on Highway 14, it is a continuous uphill climb into heavily timbered wild territory with panoramic views all around. The speed limit is 65 mph unless otherwise posted; you probably won’t get into sixth gear on the way up to Devils Tower. Pay attention while on Highway 14: wild deer abound.

If you see one, there are probably several more nearby, their favorite pastime being unexpectedly dashing across the road after hearing the noise from your loud pipes. When you get to the junction of Highway 14 and Highway 24, you’ll turn Horse Memorial will stand 563 feet tall.

The project was started in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski and Lakota Chief Henry Standing Bear to honor the heritage, tradition, and culture of North American Indians. Its namesake, Crazy Horse, was a war leader of the Oglala Lakota tribe and a prominent leader in the Sioux resistance to white encroachment in the Black Hills. His bravery and skill are admired, and he is revered by the Sioux as their greatest leader. The complex surrounding the mountain carving includes the Indian Museum of North America, the Native American Cultural Center, the Sculptor’s Studio, and a 40,000-square-foot orientation center and theater. Nightly performances of a multimedia laser-light show spotlight American Indian culture using dramatic animations and a stirring musical score.

In June, the Crazy Horse Volksmarch opens to hikers a 10K route that winds around the base of the mountain and up onto Crazy Horse’s outstretched arm.

Korczak’s wife and family have continued the project and the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation. An entrance fee is required to enter the

northbound to finish the ride to Devils Tower National Monument. At several locations midway from the junction to Devils Tower along Highway 24, spectacular views of small canyon escarpments with rocky overhangs beg for attention from you and your camera.

As you continue riding uphill, the top of Devils Tower will begin to be visible as it rises above the horizon. At 5,112 feet above sea level, Devils Tower is the predominant landscape feature of the area. The rocky tower itself is a full 867 feet from its base to the summit. The Belle Fourche River slowly meanders away eastward 1,267 below the tower.

When heading back to Sundance, preferably in the mid-evening hours, the long slow descent makes it easy to enjoy the grand views of the terrain and typically white clouded blue skies. So majestic is the roadside scenery here, you may find yourself wanting to make this ride more than once, with the images of the first riding sticking in your subconscious. Total mileage here (round trip) is approximately 56 miles, give or take a burnout.

Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway U.S. Highway 16A/S.D. Highway 87, Custer State Park

This ride is so cool that it deserves mentioning apart from Custer State Park! The 70-mile drive offers amazing views of the best the Black Hills has to offer. This scenic drive incorporates the Needles Highway (S.D. Highway 87) and Iron Mountain Road (U.S. Highway 16A). The Needles Highway features hairpin curves, drive-through tunnels, and massive granite formations that draw climbers from all over the world.

Wildlife Loop Ride: Really Wild

If you’re looking for a short ride in between other Rally-related activities, and you’re in the area of Custer State Park, Wildlife Loop Road is perfect.

The road itself is very well maintained black top with almost no surprise potholes or other impediments to smooth riding. Don’t even think of going on this little sojourn without some kind of camera, even if it’s just the camera in your cell phone. Wildlife Loop Road has a strictly enforced speed limit of 35 mph, but if you are like most annual visitors here, you will be stopping frequently to either let the buffalo and other wild critters cross the road in front of you, or to just have a good long look. You won’t find many motorcycle rides that will give close-up views of wildlife as seen here. In many cases, these critters will hold up traffic as they stand blocking the pavement and stare in amazement at you and your

Lead-Deadwood

Separated by just three miles of highway but forever joined in their rich history of mining and gaming, the Black Hills’ own Twin Cities offer something for everyone! Visit the Black Hills Mining Museum, Homestake Visitor’s Center, or the Adams Museum to see the rich mining and old-west history of this section of the Northern Hills; relax for lunch or dinner at one of the many fine establishments in both

www.bhpioneer.com vehicle. The rolling hills and wide open grassland scenery is studded with many varieties of pine and other trees of all sizes making for very pleasant riding.

Wildlife species to be seen here in Custer State Park include antelope, bighorn sheep, buffalo young and old, white tail deer, elk, coyote, prairie dogs, and all manner of flying fowl including bald eagles and other raptor species.

Custer State Park is home to one of the world’s largest buffalo herds. These buffalo live almost as they did before the West was tamed. Every year a roundup is held with buffalo harvested from the ever-growing herd. Wild “begging” burros live and play at the southernmost end of Wildlife Loop.

While the ride along Wildlife Loop Road is only 18 seemingly short miles and could take as little a 30 minutes to transit, you may find it taking just a little bit longer due to frequent stops to enjoy both the animals and the almost “as it was in the 1850s” view. I almost always do this ride both directions during the same day. No burnouts on this ride: it would only frighten the critters.

But most importantly, residents of Lead-Deadwood are ever-cognizant of the Rally and welcome the bikers with open arms. Belle Fourche

The name “Belle Fourche” is French for “Beautiful Fork” because of its site on the “Forks” of Hay Creek, Redwater River, and Belle Fourche River.

Additionally, the quaint little town is known for its status as the geographical “Center of the Nation.” After the addition of Hawaii and Alaska to the United States in 1959, a point 10 miles north of Belle Fourche was named the official geological center of the United States. The site was originally in Smith Center, Kan., before it was moved to its new home in Butte County. Visitors can have their photo taken at the monument of a 21-by-40 foot compass rose made of South Dakota granite located at the Center of the Nation Visitor Center in Belle Fourche.

The route takes travelers through Yankton, Crow Creek, Lower Brule, Cheyenne River, and Standing Rock Sioux Tribes. Along the way, bikers will have a chance to see some wildlife, including prairie dogs, pronghorn, deer, bison, and elk.

Wind Cave National Park

U.S. Highway 16, 13 miles west of Custer

Caves are one of the Black Hills’ most mysterious and intriguing wonders. To do your exploring underground, visit Wind Cave National Park. Stretching more than 100 miles, Wind Cave is one of the longest caves in the world, and the first cave to be designated a national park. With a mazelike, underground chamber system, Wind Cave features the world’s largest concentration of box work, a rare formation of thin calcite fins that resemble honeycombs. Above ground, Wind Cave National Park includes a wildlife sanctuary of 28,295 acres for antelope, bison, elk, prairie dogs, and other creatures to roam.

Here, the ponderosa pine forest meets the rolling prairie, one of the last remaining mixed grassland areas in existence. The cave’s visitor center is open daily except holidays. An admission fee is required to tour the cave. A list of tour options can be viewed at www.nps.gov/wica.

Native American Scenic Byway This 305.8-mile route takes bikers through the rich history and wildlife

Jewel Cave National Monument

Located in the scenic Hell Canyon Ranger District, the ride to Jewel Cave is a gem in itself with scenic overlooks, hairpin turns, and some wildlife sightings. But once bikers get to the cave, they are absolutely encouraged to stop and stay awhile! Jewel Cave National Monument is not only the second-longest cave in the world, at more than 140 miles and counting, it is also one of the most structurally complex. Located a little more than an hour southwest of Rapid City, Jewel Cave is a regional gem tucked in the Black Hills. Exploration is ongoing in this pristine underground labyrinth. Visit chambers decorated with calcite, nailhead, and dogtooth spar crystals and other wonders like draperies, flowstone, and stalactites. The monument’s surface trails and facilities are open free of charge. A fee is required for cave tours, which are ranger-guided and are moderately strenuous, lasting about 1 hour and 20 minutes.

The cave is open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. except on holidays. Cave tours have been known to sell out in advance; therefore, waiting times could be several hours. Visitors Top Rides Pg 19

Mammoth Site

Bikers at the Sturgis Rally can take advantage of the hiking trails to the top of the mountain, or just cruise on by the natural wonder located six miles northeast of Sturgis off Highway 79.

1800 U.S. Highway 18 Bypass, Mount Rushmore Hot Springs 13000 SD Highway 244, More than 26,000 years ago, large Keystone Columbian and woolly mammoths were trapped and died in a spring-fed pond near what is now the southwest edge of Hot Springs. Discovered in 1974 while excavating for a housing development, the Mammoth Site is the world’s largest Columbian mammoth exhibit and research center for Pleistocene studies. It is truly a unique and natural location for the state.

Bear Butte

Highway 79, Sturgis

It’s simply not possible to come to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally and not see one of the Black Hills’ natural wonders — Bear Butte. But seeing it and experiencing it are two different things, and all bikers should take in the scenic beauty and spiritual feeling of this site, named “Mato Paha” (Bear Mountain) by the Lakota Sioux for its resemblance to a sleeping bear. This geological formation is one of several intrusions of igneous rock in the Black Hills that formed millions of years ago. The mountain is sacred to many American Indian tribes, who go there to hold religious

Belle Fourche to Sturgis via Bear Butte

Riding from Belle Fourche to Sturgis via Bear Butte can only be described as the open prairie or high plains ride.

Imagine yourself back in the 1880s riding a spirited four-legged horse.

When departing from Belle Fourche traveling eastbound on S.D. Highway 212, I recommend this route be traveled during the later part of the afternoon.

You will then have the sun over your right shoulder. Make sure you have your gas tank filled completely, for you will have no opportunity to gas up between Belle Fourche and Sturgis city limits, unless you divert north to Newell at the junction of Highway 212 and Highway 79. The speed limit on 212 is 65 mph unless otherwise posted. Riding 212 can only be reckoned to riding your horse at full gallop across the plains, but staying at 60-65 mph is the best speed to enjoy this fluffy cloud-studded, blue-sky route.

Make a point of checking the weather forecast for prevailing winds. Prevailing winds in August are typically west to east, which will give a very pleasant

mountain through Keystone, try entering through the back way on Highway 244, which offers some unique scenic sights and a relaxing ride through the Hills.

tailwind from Belle Fourche to Highway 79 southbound. When leaving Belle Fourche, the first major landmark will be Belle Fourche Reservoir on the left (north side of the highway). There are several small towns with cafés serving home-cooked style food and cold drinks, which are well worth stopping. The smooth pavement and long radius curves of Highway 212 are punctuated by hills and rises, so for safety’s sake don’t attempt to pass on those blind curves.

Take your time and enjoy the view to the south of the Black Hills. They look black from out on the prairie; that’s how the hills got their name. At the junction of 212 and 79, you’ll turn right heading toward Bear Butte. If you’ve had a tail wind, it’s now a crosswind, so stay alert.

Also watch for deer on the road. It’s almost a straight shot to the outskirts of the city of Sturgis. You will be able to enjoy an ever changing view of Bear Butte as it grows larger the closer you get. Just before passing Bear Butte, you see the Broken Spoke Campground on the left. Continuing another 5-6 miles, you’ll make a right turn onto Highway 34 (westbound) on the way into downtown Sturgis. Total distance is about 55 miles, give or take a burnout.
