The Belle Fourche Volunteer Fire Department is happy to visit local daycares to show the youth what firefighters look like in gear so that the children won’t be afraid of them in an emergency. Contact Assistant Chief Andy Anderson to schedule a visitation during the month of October.

The department will also have a video option available.

Keeping pets and animals safe Our animals are also members of our family. The best way to keep them safe in case of a house fire is to include them in your fire escape and safety plans.

Follow these tips from the American Red Cross.

STOP PETS FROM STARTING FIRES

The National Fire Protection Association says that almost 1,000 home fires each year are accidentally started by a family’s pets. Pets are curious creatures and will want to investigate cook appliances, candles and any other open flame in your house. Make sure your pets aren’t left unattended around an open flame — leaving an open flame unattended is a bad idea, anyway.

If you’ve got large animals that can potentially reach your stove and oven knobs, consider installing child locks or removing the knobs while you’re gone.

If you’ve got young pets, the most curious kind, make sure to keep an eye on them or, if you’re not home, secure them in a kennel.

PUT PETS INTO YOUR PLAN

Remember your furry friends when you’re making your fire escape plan. Each pet should have their own disaster supplies kit, including food and medications, and a safe place to stay if your family can’t go home. Make these arrangements before hand and have them written down in your pets disaster kit.

When you practice your escape plan, remember to grab your pet. Train them to come when called and keep a leash by the door. Your pets should also wear a collar with tags identifying their family in case they escape their own way. But remember, never delay escape or endanger yourself or your family to rescue a wayward pet.

HELP FIREFIGHTERS HELP YOUR PETS

Never go back into a burning house to rescue your pet. Instead, prepare ahead of time to help the professionals get to them safely. When you’re away from home, kennel or keep your pets near entrances to your home.

Make sure your pets have a collar and tags with identifying information.

Honoring Firefighters Firefighters are brave, loyal and dependable members of your community. They sacrifice themselves to a cause that benefits yourself and your family. Do your part by showing your local fire department the gratitude they deserve.

Losing your home to a fire is one of the most devastating occurrences a person can experience.

Think of all the personal belongings that may be left behind while you are ensuring you and your family make a safe escape. Fires can create total losses, but firefighters do their part to diminish the amount of damage caused.

PUTTING THEIR LIVES ON THE LINE

Firefighters use scientific calculations to determine the best way to contain and extinguish fires. These precise calculations can be thwarted in an instant by changing wind conditions or the introduction of precipitation. Even a small fire can grow into a widespread frenzy of destruction without much warning.

Bravery may not be a strong enough word to describe a firefighter. It is a profession that requires running into burning buildings while the rest of its occupants scurry out to safety. Ensuring that no citizens are still inside a structure fire is just one of the dangerous aspects of the job. This act of heroism is no less than amazing

PREVENTING HOME FIRES

The greatest step you can take to protect your local firefighters is to do your part in preventing fires. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has some great tips on steps to prevent fires in your home.

• Cooking: When cooking, never leave the room while using a heating appliance. Don’t cook while you are feeling drowsy or tired and wear close-fitting clothing when near heating appliances.

• Electrical safety: Inspect your appliances for frayed wires on their power cords. Only purchase electrical appliances that are noted as UL listed, meaning they are nationally recognized by official laboratories.

• Fireplaces: Annually inspect and clean chimneys and check for damage every month. Never use a screen that is too small to cover the entire opening of your fireplace.

How to use a fire extinguisher Fire extinguishers can be useful for putting out small fires in the home, particularly in the kitchen.

Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home? Do you know how to use it?

Keep reading to learn about extinguishers from the American Red Cross.

Instead, get training from your local fire department or the extinguisher’s manufacturer on how to use your fire extinguisher before a fire breaks out. Remember that different models of extinguishers have different operating instructions, so get acquainted with your extinguishers, even if you’ve had training before. Before you being to fight a fire with an extinguisher, make sure everyone has left or is leaving hate home. Call the fire department and make sure you have a quick exit at your back.

Only use fire extinguishers or small fires that aren’t spreading, and make sure there’s only a little smoke in the room so that you have clean air to breathe.

To use your extinguisher, point it low, at the base of the fire. Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly, then sweep the nozzle from side to side over the flames. If you try to use a fire extinguisher on a fire and it doesn’t immediately die down, drop the extinguisher and get out.

Most portable fire extinguishers only last about eight seconds.

SHOULD I HAVE AN EXTINGUISHER?

Yes, you should. At least one. Consider keeping a fire extinguisher in every cooking area in your home. This extinguisher should be rated A-B-C. Many extinguishers for home use can only be used once and are not rechargeable. Fire extinguishers should be easily accessible to adults — not children — and kept near exits and away from extreme temperatures.

Routinely check that your extinguisher is properly charged by using the gauge or test button to check the pressure. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for replacing and recharging fire extinguishers. Also look for damage or corrosion and replace the extinguisher if you find any.

Cooking up fire safety The National Fire Protection Association says that a little more than half of residential fires started with cooking, making it the No. 1 cause of home fires and home fire injuries.

“We know cooking fires can be prevented,” said Lorraine Carli, the NFPA vice president of outreach and advocacy. “Staying in the kitchen, using a timer and avoiding distractions such as electronics or TV are steps everyone can take to keep families safe in their homes.”

Here are some tips from the NFPA on staying safe when cooking food.

• Never leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen whenever you’re cooking and, if you leave, turn the stove off.

• Supervise children when they’re using a microwave oven.

• If you’re using a long cooking method, such as simmering, baking, roasting or boiling food, check it regularly and stay at home while it’s cooking. Use a timer to remind you to check it often.

• Don’t start cooking if you’re sleepy, have taken medicine or drugs, or if you’ve consumed alcohol.

That increases the risk that you will doze off while cooking, and that could lead to a fire.

• Only use dishes labeled microwave-safe in your microwave oven.

• Keep an oven mitt and a pan lid nearby while you’re cooking. If a grease fire starts, use the lid to smother the flame. Turn off the burner and leave the affected pan covered until it’s cooled down.

• Establish a kid-free zone at least three feet around the stove and areas where you’re cooking.

• When you’re cooking, avoid loose-fitting clothing that may trail into stove burners and catch fire.

• Keep anything flammable — dish towels, mail, food packaging — away from the stove area.

• Never use your stove or oven to heat your home.

• Don’t use an extension cord for microwaves or other kitchen appliances.

• In case of an oven fire, turn off the heat and keep the door closed until the fire cools down. Opening the oven will give the fire more oxygen and possibly more fuel.

• Check the temperature of food before giving it to children to prevent burns. If food was heated in the microwave, stir it to evenly distributed heat.

Common home emergencies, and how to prevent them Dorothy Gale said “there’s no place like home” in “The Wizard of Oz.” But what about when homes are no longer safe?

Household emergencies can occur at any time. When disaster strikes, knowing how to proceed effectively can make a world of difference and potentially save lives. Fortunately it’s easy to prevent or reduce a wide range of household dangers by embracing some simple safety measures.

• Kitchen fires: The potential for danger exists whenever cooking with heat or over open flames. Kitchen fires may occur, but they don’t have to spread or cause serious issues if fast action is taken. Never use water to put out a grease fire — it will only spread it and make it worse. Cover the fire with a lid to suffocate the flames, or use baking

soda to douse the fire. Always have an all-purpose fire extinguisher on hand, and know how to operate it.

• Fire or other danger: No one ever thinks an emergency situation necessitating escape from the home will take place. But to play it safe, residents should designate emergency exits that are the quickest and safest ways out of every room in the house. Practice this plan and pick a specific meeting spot outside.

• Unintentional poisoning: People may inadvertently consume household poisons. State Farm advises calling 9-1-1 if the victim is unconscious or not breathing. If the person is alert, consult with the American Association of Poison Control Centers at 1-800-2221222 (or the Ontario Poison Centre at 1-800-268-9017) and await instructions.

Keep the bottle or packaging of the assumed poison on hand and be prepared to discuss symptoms and personal information about the victim.

• Accidental falls: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that accidental falls are the leading cause of nonfatal injury among nearly every age group. Roughly three million adults age 65 and older experience falls that result in emergency room visits each year in the United States. Falls can be prevented by removing tripping hazards, installing steady handrails and other supports and adding lighting in and around a home. If a fall should occur, stabilize the limb or injured area of the body and seek medical assistance.

• Burst pipes: Burst pipes or leaking plumbing can quickly cause major damage in a home. Dwell Residential

Group says to locate the water main, which is usually in the basement or garage on the “street side” near the water meter. Turn off the main to save the home and your wallet. Make the water main visible, mark which way is off, and instruct others in the house on how to use it.

• Tipping furniture: Tip-over incidents send thousands of people (especially young children) to emergency rooms each year, says the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Top-heavy items, like dressers, TV stands and televisions, bureaus, and bookcases should be anchored to the wall.

Safety at home involves knowing how to act fast in an emergency and how to reduce your risk of being in potentially dangerous situations.

How to show support for local police Police officers put their lives on the line every day they show up for work. But in spite of the sacrifices officers routinely make, their contributions often go unnoticed.

Police officers’ jobs might be thankless, but that does not mean people cannot express their gratitude to the men and women in blue who keep their communities safe. The following are a handful of ways to show support for the police officers who work hard to protect and serve your community.

SUPPORT POLICE FUNDRAISERS

Police departments fundraisers support various causes. Some might aim to raise funds for sports programs designed to help local youth, while others might hope to raise money for the families of fallen officers. Whatever the motivation for the fundraiser, by supporting the event you are donating to a good cause and showing the police they and their efforts are being supported.

TEACH KIDS TO RESPECT POLICE OFFICERS

Police officers have come under considerable scrutiny in recent years, and youngsters may not know how to respond to news stories that do not paint police officers in a positive light. Parents can show their support for police officers by teaching their kids to respect police at all times. PICK UP A POLICE OFFICER’S TAB

Police officers work in your community and, therefore, they likely break bread in your community as well. When you see police officers ordering meals at a local restaurant or sitting down to lunch at a neighborhood diner, offer to pay for their meals or arrange payment with their waiter or waitress without letting the police officers know.

Picking up police officers’ tabs is a simple gesture, but it’s one they will appreciate and it will let them know they’re supported in the community they’re working hard to protect.

Police officers have difficult jobs that require them to make considerable sacrifices to protect the communities where they work. But it doesn’t take much to show your support for local police officers and express your gratitude for the sacrifices they make every day.

Emergency Dispatchers During an emergency, first responders like police and firefighters are often praised with their quick thinking and problem solving, which saves many lives. While their respect is highly deserved, there is another set of heroes behind the scenes in public safety.

Emergency operators are often the first voice a person in distress is connected to. They must identify the type of emergency, dispatch responders to the right location and attempt to keep the other person on the line calm.

The job of a dispatcher can be incredibly stressful as they guide people through sometimes life-changing moments and chaotic situations.

AVOID THE BYSTANDER EFFECT

If you witness an emergency in a public or crowded place, don’t assume someone else will step in and call officials. The International Academies of Emergency Dispatch describes the bystander effect as the presence of others discouraging an individual from helping in a drastic situation. When you are in the area as disaster strikes, make sure to call 911 and wait with someone in need until help arrives. If you are trained to tend to emergencies, ensure another

witness makes the phone call while you assist the patient.

SAYING THANK YOU

After a situation is resolved, you can show appreciation to your acting operator by reaching out to their management and discussing their optimal assistance. Make it public by sharing the story on social media and encouraging your peers to increase their trust in the local emergency services.

CALLING 911

During an emergency, it may be difficult to compose yourself while you call for help. Prepare yourself by understanding these etiquette tips when calling 911, from the National Emergency Number Association; they can help you receive immediate help rather than a delayed response.

Stay calm: Answer each question asked by the operator. Even if it doesn’t seem pertinent to the situation, your answers are important to get responders to you quickly; Know your location: While GPS can give dispatchers an idea of where you are, make sure to disclose your exact location. If the address is unknown, look for street signs, landmarks or wellknown buildings in the area; Be clear and concise: Describe the emergency as clearly as possible. Include the condition of the patient, their age and what happened. This will ensure the operator sends the right type of relief immediately.

You can prepare your home for an emergency by clearly posting your physical address on the front of the building and both sides of your mailbox.

School Resource Officers If you visit your child’s school, you have likely noticed one or a group of police officers dedicated to keeping children safe. According to the National Association of School Resource Officers, this special type of first responder is federally defined as a career law enforcement officer with sworn authority who works with one or more schools.

The next time you see these specially trained unsung heroes, be sure to offer your gratitude and thank them for a job well done.

SPECIAL TRAINING

In addition to receiving their certification as a member of law enforcement, the NASRO recommends school resource officers complete an additional 40-hour block of instruction.

This special training discusses tools officers can use to build beneficial relationships with students and staff.

Here are the three main topics emphasized during their additional education.

Function of law enforcement: Educates on the difference between law enforcement protocols inside a school environment and understanding the teen brain and de-escalation techniques.

Mentoring students: Encourages the behaviors of becoming a positive role model for youth by employing counseling methods.

Guest speaking: Designed to showcase instructional techniques and classroommanagement resources to educate

The lessons school resource officers learn during this specialized training ensures they create a positive influence on students that will leave an impression for life.

A WELCOME PRESENCE

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, during the 20152016 school year, 43 percent of public schools had an armed officer present at least once a week. This statistic is up 10 percent from the previous decade.

School resource officers are tasked with upholding the law in their schools and building relationships with the students they protect. As a parent, you should encourage your child to be open and honest with the resource officer in their halls. Relaying information regarding a potential violent situation or other cases of wrongdoing helps create a safe space where everyone feels secure learning.

Emergencies occur every day.

Data from the 2016 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey found around 145 million emergency department visits are made in the United States each year.

Of those visits, 42.2 million are injury-related.

While no one wants to imagine themselves in dangerous situations, being realistic about the likelihood of being in an emergency can help people safeguard themselves against such situations.

One way to prepare for emergencies is to make sure you and potential first responders or medical personnel know who to call should you be unable to communicate.

Likely many things in the digital age, the process of indicating emergency contacts has changed.

MOBILE PHONE ICE

All people are urged to designate an “in case of emergency” contact on their mobile phones. This way a first responder or other emergency personnel can notify the appropriate people in emergency situations.

IEmergency contact information also should be provided for school children and with a person’s employer and updated regularly.

MEDICAL ALERT

Emergencies may arise due to lifethreatening medical conditions. If

a person is in a situation in which they are unconscious or unable to speak, a medical alert card or bracelet can help first responders provide medical care more quickly.

Bracelets and other jewelry, like those offered from the MedicAlert® Foundation, are engraved with critical information for conditions like autism, allergies, dementia, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, or epilepsy.

They can provide peace of mind and speak for the person wearing one in an emergency.

HEALTH CARE PROXY

People should consider naming a health care proxy. This can be any whom they trust. The proxy can make health care decisions for another if he or she is unable to speak. Naming a proxy ensures that one gets the healthcare he or she prefers in the event they cannot communicate their wishes.

Sometimes healthcare proxies are merged with living wills as one advanced directive document, according to the Medicare Rights Center.

Preparing for emergency situations, however unlikely they may seem, includes employing various strategies to help emergency responders and medical personnel in the event you are incapable of communicating with them.

3 steps to creating a family communication emergency plan Chaos can quickly set in when natural disasters strike. People who are in the eye of the storm or those with loved ones who are potentially in danger may spend hours, if not days, trying to get in touch with friends and family to determine if everyone is alright. However temporary it may be, the period between a storm touching down and speaking with loved ones can be agonizing. But there is a way to facilitate communication with loved ones during a natural disaster, and all it takes is some simple planning.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, often referred to as FEMA, notes that people need to send and receive information from their families during disasters. Unfortunately, there’s no guarantee that communication

networks like mobile phones and computers will be reliable during disasters, when electricity may be interrupted and mobile towers might be compromised. As a result, it’s imperative that people develop communication plans with their families so they can reach one another in the wake of natural disasters. Three simple steps can help families as they begin devising their emergency communication plans.

Planning is an essential component of disaster preparedness that can save lives and help families find one another in the wake of emergencies.

The role of an EMT EMTs, or emergency medical technicians, play an important role as first responders to emergency situations. They are well trained and should be respected public figures in your community. It is important to understand the hectic work life of an EMT. EMTs are applauded for their calm composure during extremely stressful situations. No matter the emergency, your local EMTs are prepared for any emergency event. They are first responders to scenes of vehicle accidents, home and industrial accidents, medical emergencies or any other situation that requires emergency service.

Though the length of the average shift performed by an EMT may differ depending on department, many EMTs work shifts from eight hours to two entire days. Luckily for you and your EMTs, they are allowed scheduled nap hours during these long shifts to remain sharp in administering emergency service.

EMTs also are responsible for communicating with local hospital staff to prepare for incoming patients. They deliver clear and concise information on the treatment they have already administered to a patient and explain the situation of the emergency event.

INCREDIBLE SET OF SKILLS

Take a minute to think of times you or people you know have had to dial 911. The reasons may be extremely different each time, but your EMTs were still able to sufficiently administer emergency care.

This is due to the strenuous testing and training that is required of EMTs. Here are just a few skills required by EMTs, per the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians: • cardiac arrest management; • patient assessment for trauma and medical; and • oxygen administration.

Your local EMTs do everything in their power to provide the best possible ending to an emergency. Take time to pass along your appreciation of their hard work and dedication.

Write a letter of acknowledgment to your local emergency response department explaining your gratitude to the EMTs who assisted you. These letters let your local EMTs know that the long hours and stressful conditions are making a positive difference to those around them.

Principles of first aid everyone should know Emergencies can strike at any time.

When such situations arise, emergency care often must administered to someone who is sick or injured, and that care can mean the difference between life and death.

Being prepared for emergencies means understanding basic first aid procedures that can help a person navigate a crisis — or at least stabilize the situation until paramedics arrive. The following are some first aid principles that individuals should know and practice, courtesy of the American Heart Association, American Red Cross and CPR Certified Indigo Medical Training. They should not replace formal first aid training, but can assist a person when he or she is providing medical care to someone in need.

CPR

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is one of the most important medical procedures to know. If the heart is no longer pumping blood, a person can die quickly. Immediately start chest compressions hard and fast in the center of the chest, allowing recoil between compressions. Many buildings also have automated external defibrillator devices that can help save lives. If you’re not trained in CPR, then provide handsonly CPR, says the Mayo Clinic. That means uninterrupted chest compressions of 100 to 120 a minute (the beat of “Stayin’ Alive” by The Bee Gees) until paramedics arrive. People who are trained also may perform rescue breathing. The Red Cross and other medical groups offer first aid and CPR certification classes that train people on

how to perform CPR and use an AED.

BLEEDING

Bleeding can almost always be controlled until more help is available.

Severe bleeding can lead to shock and death, so bleeding needs to be addressed immediately. Cloth should be used to cover the wound, and direct pressure should be applied to stop the blood flow.

Do not remove the cloth; add more layers as needed. Tourniquets may do more damage to a limb than good, so they are generally no longer recommended.

Nosebleeds can be treated by pinching the nostrils for a few minutes until the bleeding stops. Wounds to the head and mouth tend to bleed a lot even if they are superficial. So keep a level head when addressing these areas.

SPRAINS AND FRACTURES

Sprains and fractures occur readily, especially among active adults and children. Immobilize the limb, apply a cold pack, elevate it, and offer antiinflammatory drugs for discomfort and

swelling. A doctor should be seen for further diagnosis and treatment.

Common first aid procedures can help save lives or reduce the severity of injuries when promptly offered.

FAINTING

Someone suffering from shock or fainting needs blood to get back to his or her brain. Victims should lie on their backs with their feet elevated.

CHOKING

The Heimlich maneuver can be performed when someone is choking.

Contrary to popular belief, people who are choking do not typically make any sounds. Stand behind the victim and wrap your arms around him. Place a fist between the person’s rib cage and belly button, and place your other hand over the fist. Deliver a quick thrust upward, and keep doing this until the foreign object is dislodged. Choking in children is handled differently depending on the child’s age. Parents can get training in child maneuvers.
