Welcome new students! It’s great to have all of your fresh faces on campus, and I can’t wait for you to discover all that BH has to offer. My first piece of advice on that road to discovery is to get involved. From the second you step on BH’s campus you’ll be flooded with activities, and I urge you to attend as many of these activities as possible. Go by yourself, grab the person across the hall, find an RA (they’re all awesome), but make it happen, especially these programs in the first few weeks.

Secondly, I urge you to follow up from these initial activities and go to some meetings and get involved with something you’re passionate about. There’s a huge selection of clubs you can choose from, you can even start one yourself! I wish you luck in your first year at BH, please let me know if there’s anything I can do for you.

BHSU announces approval of 2-year MBA program The Rapid City region now has access to a two-year MBA program offered at Black Hills State University – Rapid City.

The MBA, which has been available at BHSU-RC through the BHSU School of Business since 2010, was recently streamlined and is now a two-year, Master of Business Administration (MBA) Program in Applied Management effective now.

Program Director and Professor Don Looney said, “The recent changes reflect the desire of students and employers for a high quality, AACSB Accredited, 10-course, 30 credit hour program that can be completed in just two years. Course delivery remains primarily face-to-face/ hybrid, taught exclusively by academically and professionally qualified faculty resulting in the lowest cost, best value MBA program in the

region.”

The BHSU MBA program has already produced a number of successful graduates who, as a result of earning the degree, are not only contributing to the economic growth of the Black Hills region, but are personally benefiting with promotion opportunities.

“We are proud of the accomplishments of our graduates and are proud of our program,” Looney said.

“Students appreciate our small class sizes of 20 students and the opportunity to earn a high-quality MBA for under $12,000 in tuition.”

Graduate Matt Hackett, promoted to sales manager at McKie Ford Lincoln in Rapid City, said, “Earning my MBA through BHSU has affected my career in a number of positive ways. My career path since earning my MBA has opened unlimited opportuni-

ties. I’ve been promoted twice within the organization I’m currently employed with, in addition to receiving multiple offers from other companies both local and national seeking my employment.

Employers understand that MBA graduates are serious about success in leadership, problem solving, and decision making.”

Mark McKie, of McKie Ford Lincoln and Matt’s employer added, “The MBA has helped Matt see the bigger picture and how it all interrelates.

I’ve been honored to be a guest speaker in the MBA strategic management classes and the professors are giving their students real life examples from local business leaders on real world business examples and principles.

They are preparing their students to be ready for the changes and challenges they

may face.”

David Emery, chairman, president and CEO of Black Hills Corp., has been another guest lecturer in the program.

One of his recently promoted employees, and a graduate of the BHSU MBA program, is Amber Cornella. Amber, who earned her MBA while working as human resource manager at Black Hills Corp. was recently promoted to engineering resources manager at Black Hills Energy.

“Earning an MBA helped me to develop more in-depth knowledge of the broad business concepts I learned as an undergraduate,” Amber said of the program. “ I believe it also helped open the door to opportunities in new areas within my company that might not have been possible if I had pursued a more specialized degree instead. I recommend the BHSU MBA pro-

gram to prospective students who value the face-to-face aspects of the classroom environment and the accountability it brings. The relationships built through the time spent together cannot be replicated through an on-line only program.”

Looney noted that the new program is attractive to outof-state and international students who are interested in a two-year MBA program and who want to live in the beautiful Black Hills region.

Farley named dean of Black Hills State University College of Business and Natural Sciences Black Hills State University welcomed Dr. Greg Hunt Farley as dean of the College of Business and Natural Sciences at BHSU, effective June 22.

Farley brings to BHSU three years of experience as dean of the College of Science, Technology and Mathematics at Fort Hays State University in Kansas. As the inaugural dean of his college, Farley set a standard of prioritizing a student-centered philosophy.

He grew enrollment in graduate and undergraduate programs, successfully developed fundraising to support his new college, expanded retention and undergraduate research activities, and developed faculty retention strategies.

Prior to his appointment as dean at Fort Hays, Farley served as chair and professor of biological sciences.

“At every step of the search process we all shared the singular goal of finding the best candidate to continue to elevate the Schools of Business and Natural Sciences at BHSU,” said Dr. Chris Crawford, provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. “I have every confidence that Dr. Farley is up to the task of leading our faculty and students in the attainment of high-quality education, innovation, and student success.”

In addition to the classrooms, lecture halls, and labs, the Ruddell Gallery on the third floor of the David B. Miller Yellow Jacket Student Union on the Black Hills State University campus is dedicated to encouraging inquiry.

“The gallery is really there to kind of focus on building an understanding of art and its role in society through direct engagement,” Michael Baum, assistant professor of art and Ruddell Gallery director, said.

The seven-sided room, previously named the Little Gallery, took on its current monniker to honor Jo-Marie Ruddell, an avid supporter of the arts who held several positions on campus, including director of the student union.

Baum described that there are typically seven to eight exhibitions in the gallery during the academic year. Through the summer months, a student exhibition wraps up the academic year, with a faculty exhibition kicking off the start of the fall semester. This academic year will feature a dual show highlighting the photography of Scott Chandler, assistant professor of mass communication, and Altman Studeny, instructor of art.

During the academic year, a variety of regional artists are showcased, and Baum said that he tries to bring in Native artists in the fall to coincide with Native American Heritage Month in November.

During the winter months, there is generally a photography exhibition that takes place, and on average, each exhibition in the gallery runs for about six weeks.

“I really try to focus on contemporary artists that really encourage inquiry,” Baum said, which gives people the opportunity to challenge their ideas of what art is, and what constitutes a work of art.

“We really have a pretty wide variety of work and media that’s featured,” he added.

Baum said that the department tries to bring in at least one artist each semester to give artist lectures, visit classrooms, meet with students to give individual critiques, etc.

“I think the students really see the space as a viable space to engage in individual arts, and I hope the community sees it as a viable space for that, too,” Baum said.

He explained that each year, he puts together funding proposals, with the BHSU Student Senate determining how much funding the gallery will receive. Its funding comes from the general activities fees collected on campus, with the students determining the allocation for the gallery.

“Another integral part of the gallery is to support student internships, independent studies, and the fine arts programs gallery management minor,” Baum said, describing that he is teaching gallery management during the upcoming spring semester, and the course focuses on the

role today’s gallery plays in the art world ecosystem; where to begin to run a gallery; etc.

“Looking at a variety of gallery models as a resource, this course also focuses on general gallery operations from curation to installation practices,” Baum said.

The Ruddell Gallery’s mission states that it “is committed to fostering educational experiences through exhibitions and innovation, by engaging audiences and artists in the exploration of contemporary art relevant to the community, state and region. The Gallery organizes exhibitions and educational programs to offer enjoyment and encourage inquiry, while focusing on building an understanding of art and its role in society through direct engagement with original works of art.”

The gallery is open during regular student union hours and is closed during campus breaks and official holidays, and for more information, visit bhsu.edu/Academics/ArtsHumanities/Studio-Art/RuddellGallery.

In addition to the Ruddell Gallery, there are several places to see art on campus. The President’s Gallery is located on the second floor of Woodburn Hall and features regional and national artists, and the Woodburn Hall Gallery is located on the third floor of Woodburn Hall, featuring student work from the various art classes taught in the hall.

The photography program has a space in the basement of Jonas Hall, with another display space on the second floor of Meier Hall. The studio department has an exhibition space in the E.Y. Berry Library Learning Center, and there is also space for students to display their work in the basement of Wenona Cook Hall. Baum said that these spaces are more student-driven, overall.

BHSU sheds new light on its conservation efforts University adds solar panels to dorm

Black Hills State University is continuing its commitment to sustainability by installing more than 200 solar panels atop Bordeaux Hall.

In 2007, BHSU became the first South Dakota school to join the American College and University President’s Climate Commitment to become completely carbon neutral by 2050.

“There are more efforts to be made,” Randy Culver, associate vice president for Facilities and Sustainability at BHSU said. “But we’re confident that we’re on track.”

Culver said the panels installed at Bordeaux Hall were always part of the planed sustainability effort going back to when the new student residence was built three years ago.

“When we designed this roof, we designed it to hold solar panels,” he said.

The $150,000 roof-

top solar project installed this summer at Bordeaux Hall will produce 70-kilowatt hours, which comprises approximately 20 percent of the dorm’s electricity usage. A company based out of Piedmont, called GenPro Energy Solutions, is installing the panels themselves.

Bordeaux won’t be the only building to receive a solar panel makeover. Culver said that this fall university officials hope to install panels on the library, and moving forward, on top of the life science laboratory as well as the Donald E. Young Fitness Center.

Culver mentioned other environmental measures taken by the university such as recycling stations being placed around campus; replacing trash cans in administration offices with recycling bins to encourage employees to be more conscious about how they dispose of their waste; the Anita Haeder campus garden, which is open for community use; and the “Food Hub,” which

partners local farmers and growers with kitchens across the Black Hills, including the cafeterias at Rapid City Regional Hospital and Mount Rushmore.

BHSU also hosted 150 students from area elementary schools for an Eco Explorers Event in July. The day-long event teaches students about conservation and recycling efforts in the Black Hills.

Another bright spot for the Facilities and Sustainability department at BHSU has been retrofitting all exterior lights on campus to accept LED light bulbs, as well as plans to do the same for all interior lights. In addition to LED bulbs, all exterior lights were also equipped with solar panels of their own.

Lisa Bike program helps students keep rolling

Black Hills State University is reaching out to students without vehicles to make transportation a little easier.

The university’s Lisa Bike program just obtained four new bicycles to add to its fleet of cruisers bringing to total to 10.

The university’s Enactus program oversees the program.

“We focus on our international students,” said Dr. Barbara Looney, co-advisor of the Enactus program.

“One of our aims in Enactus, is to help the underserved. We saw those (international) students as coming here and not here and not having transportation, and not being here long enough to get a car or a license.”

Students are able to lease a bike for $25 a semester.

The program began in 2012 when an Enactus student applied for a grant to get six bikes and a bike repair station. The bike repair station is located at the student union.

The new bikes were obtained when Enactus partnered with the sustainability office and Petrika Peters. The sustainability office matched funds from Enactus that were raised through leasing the bikes.

“They are great for around campus and around town and the bike path,” Looney said.

She said the bikes are rented pretty quickly and then turned in around December. There is a lull in bike rentals until the snow begins to melt.

Lookout Mountain

4 Miles of Trail - Easy to Difficult The trailhead at Nevada Street is the start of a popular hiking loop that ascends Lookout Mountain, the closest hike to town. From this trail, you can follow the ridgeline to connect up with an old road that spans much of the mountain. The old road is popular with hikers because it is kept mowed and maintained, and a short spur leads to the tower area on the highest point where hikers can behold breathtaking views of the town of Spearfish and the surrounding area. None of the trails are marked or mapped, but most trails are very visible and easy to follow.

Be cautious; rattlesnakes are common on Lookout Mountain.

6.4 Miles (roundtrip) - Difficult Views from the top of Crow Peak include the city of Spearfish, Spearfish Valley, and west to Wyoming.

Crow Peak is a key landmark in the Northern Black Hills. The name “Crow Peak” is an English translation of the Sioux name for the peak, “Paha Karitukateyapi,” which means “the hill where the Crows were killed.” The name stems from a battle between Sioux and Crow Indians in which the Sioux were victorious. Crow Peak is a dominant landmark because of its geological makeup. Billions of years ago, underground molten rock, pushed upward forming hills. Crow Peak and other peaks you can see from the Crow Peak summit, such as Bear Butte, Spearfish Mountain and Terry Peak, were formed in this manner.

Directions: From Spearfish, head north on Main Street (turns into North Avenue) past Safeway. Turn left onto Hillsview and drive approximately 4.1 miles. At the juncture, turn left onto Higgins Gulch Road, also known as Forest Service Road 214. Follow FSR 214 for approximately 7 miles to the trailhead.

“We look forward to his leadership in the coming year and are excited for him to have the opportunity to serve as the Head Coach of the Yellow Jacket men’s basketball program moving forward.”

The Yellow Jackets are scheduled to open their season against Northern State on Nov. 16.

Welker named head coach of BHSU women’s golf Black Hills State University Director of Athletics, Jhett Albers, has announced that Kelly Welker has been named the new head women’s golf coach at BHSU. “I am extremely excited to begin my coaching career at Black Hills State University. I look forward to the opportunity and challenge in taking Yellow Jacket golf to the next level,” said Welker. “I am Kelly anxious to start working with, and Welker getting to know, our current team, as well as establishing relationships with our former players. The Spearfish community is very supportive of college athletics, and getting this town enthused about BHSU women’s golf will be very important to me and our program.”

Welker comes to BHSU

from the University of Central Missouri, where she has been a graduate assistant coach of the women’s golf team for the last year, overseeing strength and conditioning and recruiting for UCM. Welker graduated from Central Missouri, playing golf for the Jennies during her time in Warrensburg. She is currently working on her masters degree in sport management.

“We are very excited to have Coach Kelly Welker on board as our head women’s golf coach,” said Albers. “She comes from a very successful program at Central Missouri, and will bring those experiences and a high level of energy to our golf program and Yellow Jacket Athletic Department.”

Jackets gear up for 2018-19 sports

The Black Hills State University football team hopes to overcome the 2017 season when they take the gridiron for the 2018 season.

The Yellow Jackets finished 4-6 in 2017, after going 7-4 in 2016.

“We had some very high expectations going into the season after success in the previous year. We felt like we had set the bar higher, which you need to do,” said John Reiners, who enters his seventh seasons as the BHSU head football coach. “I think when you look at win/loss records obviously I think we fell short of that, going from 7-4 to 4-6.”

Reiners said he never wants his team to be satisfied, and going into the 2016 season they had aspirations of winning more games.

“We were hoping to be in the top echelon of our conference and I think we are

working our way up. One thing we did show was we can play with every team, we just at times lacked that consistency. That was the big thing,” Reiners said.

The Jackets lost Phydell Paris, J.J. Kilgore, Bradley Adamson, Jared Tiefenthaler, Erick Hairstin-Belcher, Thayer Sauter, Isaiah Birkel, James Marshall, Jesse Marshall, Michael Deichert, Aaron Montoya, Rico Stubbs, Darian Warford, and Shandon Jones, to graduation.

“Every year its tough to say goodbye to a group of seniors and this year is no different. We have 14 guys who have really weathered the storm.

They were a big part of that transformation from 0-11 to 7-4,“said Reiners.

“They’ve had their highs and lows, but what a great group of guys. They just kind of kept things going. They were disappointed in their record this year, but they should be proud of the foundation they set. It’s so big, and the guys persevered through so many things and we’re going to miss them. The senior class is always a tough class to replace.”

Returning will be senior quarterback Ryan Hommel, along with fellow seniors Eriq Swiftwater, Dimitri Butts, Drew Hebel, Austin Goodard, and junior Payton Gilmore.

Black Hills State opens its 2018 season Sept. 1 at Chadron State.

Soccer

Black Hills State University created the biggest highlight of the 2017 women’s soccer season by outlasting Colorado Christian 3-2 in double overtime for its first-ever Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference victory.

The Lady Yellow Jackets finished 1-11 in the conference, 1-16 overall.

“I would say that pocket of four or five games where we kind of got in sync; that was really positive,” Greco said. He added the two-year-old program is a young team.

Greco said the Yellow Jackets must bring in recruits. He noted injuries affected the team in the season finale against Colorado Mesa, and those will happen.

“We need to have the numbers to make it up,” he added.

Work ethic served as Black Hills State’s strongest suit, according to Greco. He said the squad would build a culture that calls effort the most important thing.

“We’re going to attract players that love to give really strong effort,” Greco said. “Next year, we’ll be able to compete in games based on having a team of players that can give full effort.”

Greco said the Yellow Jackets began to gain self-belief as the season progressed.

Greco discussed the contributions they made.

“They were able to step in in areas that a young team isn’t really aware of,” he said. “They did bring a calm perspective on watching film or traveling.”

Greco sees hard work as being the program’s biggest cornerstone in the future. He said the team also wants to expand its fan base and create more excitement.

Effort is a continual theme of Greco’s philosophy.

“That means finding kids that want to give more than they’re going to get,” he said.

“That’s what building is.”

Greco said the squad will address other goals in the future, but the RMAC tournament is on that list.

Eight squads qualify for the postseason event.

“We realized we can play with some teams,” Greco said. “If you can play with the teams, then you can stay in the game long enough to win the game.”

Greco said a lot of work would give the returning players the best chance of reaching individual and team goals.

“We’ve got to clean up our technical touches,” he said. “We’ve got to develop an attitude that we’re going to be the hardest-working player on the field.”

Greco said the team must also go through a lot of game understanding, along with time in the weight room. He added the weight training would aid injury prevention as well as increasing strength.

“They realize they can play,” Greco said. “Now, let’s apply ourselves. Let’s work all these areas.

“Then next year when we play, we’re going to be better than some teams.”

Black Hills State opens its 2018 season in Rapid City on Aug. 26 against Morningside.

Cross country

The Black Hills State University cross country team hopes to have another successful season under head coach Scott Walkinshaw, who enter his 21st season as the Yellow Jackets head cross country coach.

The women were led by Abbie Fredrick (Cheyenne, Wyo.), who placed 40th, in 22:36.7. This was Fredrick’s first race being the top finisher for BHSU. Tori Moore (Ipswich, S.D.) was 44th in a time of 23:44.1, while Savannah Davis (Rapid City) was 46th and Cailey Roth (Freeman, S.D.) was 47th, in times of 23:46.3 and 23:46.8, respectively.

“Our women had a really nice race and I’m really pleased with the effort and team place,” said Walkinshaw.

“Especially with all of the injuries we had this year, the team had an excellent race. We came a long way this year, and I think our performance today really bodes well for the future.”

The Yellow Jackets men were led

by Jordan Theisen (Kenai, Alaska) who placed 39th in a time of 26:45.6.

Jonah Theisen (Kenai, Alaska) was just behind in 26:47.3, to finish 41st.

Jake Iverson (Winnett, Mont.) finished 44th, while Isaac Iverson (Sioux Falls) was 45th. They finished in 26:57.6 and 26:58.1, respectively.

“Our men just didn’t finish where we wanted to,” said coach Walkinshaw.

“We didn’t run as well as we wanted to, but I think that in a couple weeks at Regionals we’ll perform a lot better.”

The Jackets cross country teams then traveled to Canyon, Texas to compete at the South Central Regional.

The women finished in 10th place, while the men placed 13th.

The women were led by Abbie Fredrick (Cheyenne, Wyo.), who placed 37th, in 22:54.0.

On the men’s side, Jordan Theisen (Kenai, Alaska) placed 39th in a time of 26:45.6.

The Yellow Jackets open its 2018 cross country season in the beginning of September.

1:23.56. Kaylee Lamb set a personal record in 1:26.25, and finished fourth in the women’s standings.

Next up was the Littlefoot Triathlon in Lakewood, Colorado.

Bernard, finished second in the female division, in a time of 1:02.16.

Christy finished ninth, and second in her age division, with a time of 1:08.25.

Her time was three minutes faster than her race on the same course last year.

Black Hills State then competed at the NCAA East Region Qualifier in Sarasota, Fla. All five BHSUstudent-athletes qualified for a spot at the National Championships.

Bernard was the second Division II finisher, and was seventh overall with a time of 1:11.00. Lamb was 14th overall, and sixth in Division II in 1:13.24; while Christy finished 10th in Division II, and 20th overall (1:16.50). Cayley Schmitt was 23rd overall in 1:20.40, good for 12th at the Division II level, and Taylor Ihmels, 14th in Division II, was 27th overall (1:24.32).

At the Women’s Collegiate Triathlon Championship in Tempe, Arizona, the Black Hills State triathlon team finished second overall among Division II schools..

Bernard was the fourth Division II finisher, placing 13th overall. She finished in 1:08:15.56. Christy was 49th overall, and 15th in Division II, while Ihmels was just behind in 50th overall, and 16th in the division. Christy finished the triathlon in 1:16:20.50, and Ihmels finished in 1:17:04.03.

Lamb and Schmitt were 53rd and 54th overall, respectively. Lamb’s time of 1:17:48.63 was good for 17th in Division II, while Schmitt’s time of 1:17:58.47, was good for 18th in Division II. The Black Hills State triathlon team begins its 2018 season in early September.

The Lady Jackets were runners-up in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament and made the NCAA Division II Tournament, losing in the first round to Angelo State University, 87-75.

Black Hills State finished with a record of 24-8 overall, and 16-6 in the RMAC. Before the season had even started the Jackets already had doubters, as they received a preseason ranking of ninth in the RMAC. “I don’t get too worked up with that (ranking); I think it was motivation for us. It probably helped us more than anything. I felt like we were better than that. I always think that we can win the conference,” said Mark Nore, the Lady Jackets’ head coach. “Those games were huge. We needed to feel success as a team before we got into conference play.”

Senior Rachel Erickson establishied herself as a premier scorer early on in the season.

“Rachel was a huge piece of our puzzle. The big thing about Rachel besides being called ‘The Queen’ was practice. She had the urgency to practice, and she was already ready to go,” said Nore. “You can call her ‘Big Shot Rach.’ She had a lot of timely shots for us, and they were usually contest-

August 2018 ed. She made big plays, was huge for our success; she was our leader, our voice.”

Midway through the season the Lady Jackets were on a roll, with a 7-4 record in conference play.

They picked off nationally ranked Fort Lewis, beating the Lady Eagles 5348 in front of the home crowd.

Erickson had a double-digit night, scoring 20 points and making a late free throw to seal the deal.

“Felt like we had a shot to compete for the title. The correlation between practices and games, I felt like our team was practicing well. There was competition amongst players, and there was an enthusiasm in practice.

A lot of the teams that beat us the year before we beat them,” Nore said.

In its last conference game of the regular season, Black Hills State beat Regis University 69-53, ending conference play with a five-game winning streak and clinching a home playoff game with a RMAC record of 16-6.

They would open tournament play up at home against Fort Lewis, where Erickson would lead her team to victory, 59-56, with Erickson dropping 19 points against the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Jackets would go on to beat Metro State in a semi-final thriller of the RMAC tournament, beating the Lady Roadrunners by the score of 5250.

The game came down to a free throw in the final seconds of the game.

Keely Bertram was fouled on a rebound. She made the first and missed the second on purpose so the time could expire, giving the Lady Jackets a spot in the RMAC Championship game against CSU-Pueblo.

In the championship game the Lady Jackets would lose to the ThunderWolves 84-69.

Bertram and Lyndzi Rich were named to the All-Tournament team.

Rich had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the way for the Yellow Jackets, while Bertram finished with 13 points and eight boards.

“I think the team was rewarded for what they invested. It was great for the program to get a taste again for what that feels like. It was a fun experience.

Hopefully it motivates us to be better,” Nore said.

The Lady Jackets finished the season with a home record of 16-1, with their only loss coming to the Lady Thunderwolves.

“Wish we could’ve got the last one (Dec. 30). The game we lost was against Pueblo, and it feels like we gave that one away,” Nore said. “I think about the one that got away more than the other ones (wins). We need to have that same mindset each year.”

The goal for Black Hills State this offseason is to keep improving with no dropoffs.

“I just want to keep getting better. I just want to get these kids to continue to believe in what we’re doing, in the process. To continue to get better, and I think we can,” Nore said.

Men’s basketball

The Black Hills State University men’s basketball team will hope to continue its climb upwards in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference under new head coach Ryan Thompson.

During the 2017-18 season, the Yellow Jackets made the RMAC Tournament for the first time since joining, and had the best overall record and conference record (12-10) since the 2010-11 season.

Returning for Black Hills State for the 2018-19 season will be seniors Fraser Malcolm, Makaleb McInnis, Dex Stoudamire, and Patrick Mendes, and juniors Connor O’Hearn, Hoyt Nicholas, Stephan Desnica, and Antonio Capely.

The Yellow Jackets open its 201819 season hosting Northern State on Nov. 16.

The Black Hills State University rodeo teams competed at the 2018 College National Finals Rodeo, with Carlee Johnston finishing fifth in the women’s all-around, while Savana Johnston made it to the final round of breakaway roping. The women’s team finished the week in 17th place, while the men’s team came in 41st.

Three Yellow Jackets were named Academic All-Americans.

Carlee Johnston, KeAnna Ward, and Alyssa Lockhart were all named Academic All-Americans.

In order to earn the honor, a student-athlete has to qualify for the CNFR while holding a 3.5 GPA or higher.

Savana Johnston finished seventh in the short go round on Saturday evening in breakaway rop-

ing with 2.6. She finished ninth overall with 20.5. Johnston’s best finish was in the second go, when she was fourth with 2.5 Carlee Johnston also competed in breakaway roping, with her best finish coming in go two, when she was seventh with 2.6. She also participated in goat tying. She was third in the first go with 6.4, while placing ninth in the second go with 6.6.

KeAnna Ward also competed in goat tying, with her best round coming in the second go, placing 24th with 6.9.

Carson Johnston competed in the steer wrestling. His best finish was in the second go, when he was third in the round in 3.8. He was 24th in the first go (7.2).

Alyssa Lockhart best finish in barrel racing came in the first go round, when she was 34th with 15.31. She was 36th in the second go (15.27), and 43rd in the third go (15.93).

“I’m pleased with what our team accomplished this season in the arena and in the classroom. They worked hard and were very determined all year long. I was impressed with how they found ways to be successful even through adversity,” said coach Glen Lammers. “At the CNFR, our team capitalized on good stock draws and placed very well in the go rounds. The knowledge and experience we gained at the finals will be very valuable as we start preparing for next season.”

Carlee Johnston won the All-Around Championship.

Johnston earned the All-Around title with 1,595 points, more than 200 points in front of any other student-athlete.

She racked up points in barrel racing (10th place, 150 points), breakaway roping (first, 520 points), and goat tying (second place, 825 points). The junior won the All-Around Title at the Bison Stampede and the Mid Plains Community College Stampede during the 2017-18 season. She helped lead the Yellow Jackets to eight first place finishes in nine stampedes over the year and qualified for the College National Finals Rodeo.

Lammers was named the Great Plains Region Coach of the Year after the Yellow Jacket women finished first in the region, with Johnston winning the region title, and the men finished fourth in the region. Five student-athletes made it to the College National Finals Rodeo, with one member of the Green and Gold advancing to the finals. Lammers was last named the Region Coach of the Year following the 2015-16 season.

August 2018 coach Lane Leedy used that word to describe a team that endured and recovered from difficult conditions in 2018.

The Lady Yellow Jackets finished 9-23 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, and 9-31 overall.

“We ended up playing 40 games on the road without a single home game or a single home practice,” Leedy said.

Scheduled home games were either cancelled or moved to Gillette, Wyo., because of inclement weather.

Black Hills State’s victory total and 10th-place finish are the team’s best since it joined the conference.

“They did a good job of coming out during conference play and really playing well. I thought we were in every game all the way through the season, with the exception of maybe that last weekend,” Leedy said.

The Yellow Jackets brought a 0-8 record into the RMAC schedule. Weather resulted in cancellation of four scheduled home games against Adams State.

The RMAC win total, and increased offensive production, provided other season highlights for Leedy. She said the Yellow Jackets tripled their home run numbers from 2017 to 2018.

Claire Fergusson was the Yellow Jackets’ lone senior.

Leedy said the team has shown it can win on the road and vie for an RMAC tournament berth. “Now, we just need to create that consistency,” she said.

BLACK HILLS PIONEER/BACK TO BHSU goal is for the team to play before its home fans and celebrate that opportunity, Leedy said. She added home games can be taken for granted, but they were taken from the team.

Leedy said leadership will be key for the 2018 season to support the team.

“The next thing we look for is having that upperclassman leadership, on and off the field,” Leedy said. She added the squad looks forward to having a stronger start to the 2019 season, kicking things into gear for the RMAC slate, and getting a bit better each day.

The lady Jackets kick off its 2019 season in early February.

Volleyball

The 2017 season saw the Black Hills State University women’s volleyball team earn a first-ever trip to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference postseason tournament.

“It was something that, honestly, took all season to attain,” Yellow Jackets’ head coach Kristin Carmichael said.

“Our entire conference season run led to that happening.”

In 2017, Black Hills State finished 8-10 in the conference, 11-17 overall.

That RMAC record enabled the Yellow Jackets to claim the eighth and final spot in the postseason tournament, where they fell to top-seeded Regis three games to zero.

as she reviewed the season, including having five seniors on the team: outside/ right side hitter Kenzie Kazmer, middle hitter/right side hitter Fehrin Ward, outside hitter/defensive specialist Tara Hall, middle hitter Cheyenne Palu, and defensive specialist Sydney Ederhoff.

“They brought a lot of maturity and leadership,” Carmichael said in describing those players. “They knew what it was going to take to make the top eight, and I feel like they really helped up with that. Now, we can just work on making steps from there.”

The Lady Yellow Jackets lost Kazmer, Ward, Hall, Palu, and Ederhoff to graduation.

Returning will be seniors Elise Lech and Sierra Stugelmeyer, along with juniors Laurel Hech, Tess Thomas, and Jessy Hibl.

The Lady Yellow jackets open its 2018 volleyball season Aug. 24 at Tarleton State in Stephenville, Texas.

Track & Field

The Black Hills State University indoor track and field team had a successful 2017-18 season.

At the Rocky Mountain Athletic conference championships, the men’s team finished in seventh place, while the women placed ninth.

Alexandra Richards finished in a tie for third place in the high jump. Her jump of 1.62 meters was tied with Sarah Cerrone from Colorado Mesa to make the podium.

The women’s 4x400-meter relay team finished eighth in 4:11.57. Shayna Soderstrom, Abbie Fredrick, Cailey Roth, and Zoe Langseth competed on the team for the Yellow Jackets.

On the men’s side, Justin Thorstad was third in the 800-meter run. His time of 1:55.37 was good enough to put him on the podium. Jordan Theisen took fifth in the same event (1:56.54). Jonah Theisen was sixth in the mile run, finishing in 4:23.83.

The 4x400 meter relay team, made up of Taylor Hepp, Brian Kjerstad, Garrett Snook, and Tristan Hepp, took fourth place in 3:23.03.

Tristan Hepp took fifth in the 200-meter dash (23.05), earning points for the Yellow Jackets. Taylor Hepp placed fourth in the 400-meter dash in 50.42 seconds. Seth Kovar finished in seventh, and Tristan Hepp placed eighth in the 60-meter hurdle finals after moving into first and second on the BHSU Top-10 list for the event in the preliminaries.

In the men’s pole vault, Bryce Boser finished in fifth place (4.82m). Ryan Olsen finished the heptathlon in 10th place, with 3792 points.

Two members of the Black Hills State men’s indoor track and field team earned South Central All-Region honors, as announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

Tristan Hepp and Allan McDonnell each earned the honor for their performance in the high jump this season.

Both men’s best marks are Provisional National Qualifiers, and also moved them into the top-five in the BHSU All-Time Top-10 List. McDonnell, from Wall, now holds the school record in the high jump, clearing a height of 2.10 meters or 6’ 10.75”. The freshman also won the event at the RMAC Indoor Championships.

Hepp, a native of Buffalo, Wyo., is fourth on the All-Time BHSU list with a mark of 2.05 meters of 6’ 8.75”.

Named to the All-RMAC indoor track and field team from BHSU were:

Richards, Justin Thorstad, and Allan McDonnell each earned First Team honors. Jordyn Huneke, Whitney Scott, Tristan Hepp, Taylor Hepp, Jonah Theisen, Bryce Boser finished fifth in the pole vault, earned a spot on the Second Team.

At the 2018 RMAC Outdoor Championships, Black Hills State garnered two conference champions.

In the women’s pole vault, Whitney Scott earned the title of RMAC champion after clearing 12-8.00 (3.86m), which is a national provisional qualifying mark.

Jordyn Huneke (11-9.25/3.59m) and Alexandra Richards (10-11.50/3.34m) both earned points for the Yellow Jackets in the pole vault as well, placing fifth and tied for eighth, respectively. Lia Guigui took first place in the women’s high jump with a mark of 5-4.25 (1.63m), earning a spot on top of the podium.

The Yellow Jackets continued to have success during the outdoor season with South Central All-Region going to Tristan Hepp, Allan McDonnell, Jordyn Huneke, Whitney Scott, and Alexandra Richards.

Justin Thorstad, Jordyn Huneke, and Whitney Scott competed at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championship.

Thorstad competed in the 800-meter preliminaries and finished 17th in the nation in 1:51.74, but ultimately failed to qualify for the finals.

Huneke and Scott, both freshman, competed in the women’s pole vault where Huneke finished tied for 14th in the nation, clearing 3.65 meters, while Scott was unable to clear the initial height.

The Yellow Jackets will open its 2018-19 indoor/outdoor track and field season in early December.

Golf

The Black Hills State women’s golf team opened its fall portion of the 2017-18 season tying for 10th at the Samuel Proal Invitational.

Freshman Taryn Mayer led the way for the Lady Yellow Jackets in her first collegiate tournament, finishing in a tie for 33rd, after shooting 24-over 168. Kiley Phares placed 36th, shooting 27-over par 171. Molly Butler (184) and Hayley Franke (185) finished tied for 52nd and tied for 54th respectively. Madison Hand placed 58th with a 187.

They finished the fall season with a 13th place finish at the RMAC Fall Preview, 9th at the Mustang Invite, and in the final tournament of the fall season, they finished in seventh place at the Bellevue Fall Invite.

After the fall season Jamie Bentley resigned as the BHSU golf coach, and Alexander Kline was hired to replace her.

In the spring, Black Hills State finished in eighth place at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championships. The finish was three places better than the Yellow Jackets’ 11th place at last year’s RMAC Championship.

Phares led the way for the Lady Yellow Jackets with 241, good for 23rd place.

Black Hills State finished in eighth place in the RMAC, shooting 198-over 1062. The finish is the best for the team since the Yellow Jackets finished seventh in 2013.

At the end of the season Kline resigned as golf coach and BHSU recently hired Kelly Welker as its new golf coach.

The Black Hills State women’s golf team opens its 2018-19 season in early September.

American Indian Science and Engineering Society AISES at BHSU is a collegiate chapter of the national AISES organization.

AISES is a national non-profit organization which nurtures building of community by bridging science and technology with traditional native values. To support and motivate Black Hills State University athletics, to obtain and share leadership qualities, and to support and challenge each other individually as well as the squad as a whole.

BHSU Soccer Club

Brings together students with a common interest for soccer and to organize the student community who play soccer here at BHSU.

Bicycling Club

The Bicycling Club will meet and go on bike rides through Spearfish during the year. Together students will work on cycling skills and gain knowledge in bike maintenance with a main go to promote bicycling on campus and a healthy lifestyle.

Black Hills CRUX

Support and promote the sport of rock climbing, ice climbing, and bouldering.

Educate people who may be interested in getting involved with these activities.

Buzz Arcade

This club gathers students with a common interest to play video games and develop high end video game tournaments.

BHSU Talking Hands

BHSU Talking Hands wants to educate others about sign language (American Sign Language, Signing Exact English, along with other forms of sign language).

As an organization we want to have and encourage community involvement. We are hoping to get involved in our surrounding areas and get the community interested in sign language as well BHSU Talking Hands will strive for student engagement.

Campus Activities Board (C.A.B.)

This organization plans large events for the entire campus and the surrounding community. The student run organization plans and hosts a variety of entertainment including, lectures, musical events, cultural events, dances, and large scale themed activities. The purpose of this organization is to provide opportunities for Circle K members and BHSU students to better their campus and community through volunteering and community service, as well as, provide an opportunity for leadership positions within the organization

The Council for Exceptional Children is a professional association of educators dedicated to advancing the success of children with exceptionalities. We accomplish our mission through advocacy, standards, and professional development.

International Student Organization

The International Students Organization (ISO) of Black Hills State University has been formed out of the need for more interaction among international students, domestic students and the Spearfish Community.

Jacket Pack

Jacket Pack is a group focused on increasing school pride at Black Hills State University. This school spirit goes beyond athletics and will also be used to support the fine arts and various academic organizations such as debate and theatre. Furthermore, we reach out to the Spearfish community, the university and Alumni to make students proud to be from BHSU.

Lakota Omniciye

Seeks to bridge the cultural gaps between non-Indian and Indian students and to provide educational assistance to its members where applicable.

Nights of Country Swing Club

NOCS is a club that provides a fun way for students to de-stress, take a study break, and meet new people with similar interests. We dance on Monday evenings from 7-9 in the young center. NOCS is open to everyone. We will teach you how to dance swing or line dance.

Presidential Student Ambassadors

Black Hills State University Ambassadors Association was founded under the direction of the BHSU Alumni Association and Advancement office for the purpose of representing the presi-

dent’s office and BHSU while serving as a link between current students, administrators, faculty members, alumni, and friends.

Rotaract

Rotaract clubs bring together people ages 18-30 to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills, and have fun through community and international service. Rotaract clubs decide how to organize and run their club, manage their own funds, and plan and carry out activities and service projects aligned with causes that are important to their community. Rotary club sponsors offer guidance and support and work with local Rotaract clubs as partners in service.

Spectrum

Spectrum is dedicated to raising awareness about the LGBTQIA community at BHSU and the Black Hills area. In order to do so, this organization will address stereotyping that is harmful to society and decrease bigotry and misunderstanding. Spectrum will provide a safe haven for LGBTQIA individuals, their family, and friends by providing resources, a caring environment that allows for open discussion and support, and a place for like-minded individuals to meet. This organization will promote education on LGBTQIA issues as well as informing and advocating for LGBTQIA civil rights and equality.

Swarm Days Homecoming Committee

Plans and implements all of the homecoming programs and activities. BHSU homecoming is held every fall semester in late September or early October.

Thompson Diversion Program

Provides BHSU students with the opportunity to correct a poor decision.

Instead of a poor decision affecting their permanent adult record, which can result in negative consequences such as loss of job opportunities or ineligibility for financial aid, this program ensures the students take responsibility for their actions. Through cooperation with their peers, students correct their mistakes by giving back to BHSU and the Spearfish community and by completing activities that ensure education and accountability. This program allows for student volunteers to learn about public speaking, community service, and legal studies and make valuable connections.

TRIO Student Organization

TRIO Student Organization invites all BHSU students who are interested in college access and student success to join.

The purpose of the club is to facilitate inclusiveness on campus through social interaction and participation in community service activities. The club also helps to promote the federally-funded TRIO Student Support Services program at BHSU. TRIO helps students be successful in reaching their higher education goals through personal and academic support.

The purpose of the Yellow Jackets Vets Club is to provide guidance, support, and camaraderie for veterans coming off active duty and those currently serving in the military.

YJ Friends

YJ Friends will provide BHSU with service learning opportunity to work with adults with developmental disabilities within the Spearfish community.
