BELLE FOURCHE — The Black Hills Roundup began when 15,000 people gathered in a field in Belle Fourche to raise funds for World War I in 1918. Despite the town’s population of 1,410 people, it was such a success that its organizers held it again and again.

The Black Hills Roundup, held every year around the Fourth of July holiday, is five days of wild, professional rodeo action, touted as the “greatest show on dirt.”

A week of blinking carnival lights and carefree rides, nightly outdoor concerts by the brightest regional country music stars, a massive parade, and a nationally renowned fireworks display — this is the 99th annual Black Hills Roundup. All this and more draws tens of thousands of people to Belle Fourche from across the globe.

The Black Hills Roundup Committee is one of a handful of 100 percent volunteer run events of its kind in the nation.

Ninety-nine years ago, when the Black

Hills Roundup began, there weren’t much but those rodeo-rooted events on the schedule — things have changed a lot since then. Roundup is now a multi-day celebration comprised of a wide variety of events, including a golf tournament, a rodeo queen contest, a carnival, concerts, a parade, and so much more.

As the event nears its centennial celebration, the Roundup hasn’t lost its heart.

It’s somehow managed to remain appealing to the rodeo purist while simultaneously attracting those whom wouldn’t be caught dead in a cowboy hat.

For many people in and around the Black Hills region, the Fourth of July means Roundup.

Belle Fourche Mayor Gloria Landphere

is one of these people. She feels Roundup is a signature event showcasing the past, present, and future of Belle Fourche.

“Belle Fourche is the perfect setting for an exciting event like the Black Hills Roundup, it’s a town with a long storied history of cowboys, ranch life, and rodeo,” she said.

Landphere grew up in Belle Fourche and fondly recalls playing clarinet with the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band at Roundups in her high school and college years. Though she’d never try her hand at bronc riding, Landphere looks forward to the Roundup each summer.

“The Roundup offers many unique experiences throughout the week’s festivities: the rodeo events, the parade, the carnival, the spectacular fireworks display, and more,” she said. “It’s an exciting time, it really is.”

The 99th annual Black Hills Roundup runs from Saturday, June 30 to Wednesday, July 4, with the spectacular Roundup Fireworks show blasting off after the rodeos on July 2 and 3.

The 99th Roundup parade celebrates nearly a century of heritage

Get ready for the 99th annual Black Hills Roundup Parade. Traditionally, the Roundup is marked with all types of festivities. The parade, held on the Fourth of July, is one of the main events where thousands of spectators line the parade route each year. Many businesses and individuals compete for top honors and cash prizes.

As thousands across the nation celebrate both freedoms that were won and freedoms continuing to be fought for, Belle Fourche gears up for its busiest four days of the year with the Fourth of July parade.

The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. July 4 and will feature a new route this year to accommodate for the Eighth Avenue construction that is currently underway, blocking off the typical route through the center of town.

Lineup for the parade will be located on 13th Avenue and the route will begin at its intersection with National Street, heading east. Then, the parade will head northwest on Elkhorn Street and down State Street where the parade ends at its intersection with Fifth Avenue.

This year’s parade, themed “It’s a grand old flag.”

Parade Chairman Mark Leverington is serving his seventh year in this role.

“We chose this theme because of its symbolism and meaning that it carries for our nation in a patriotic way,” Leverington said.

“We want to celebrate our heritage with our 100th year coming up, and this is our way of making people aware that is on the horizon.”

A cash prize goes to the parade entry that best represents the theme. There will be other cash prizes for additional categories as well.

“The commander of Ellsworth Air Force Base will join us at the start. We have a very special relationship with Ellsworth and it’s a great honor that the commander would choose this parade every year,” Leverington said.

Col. Gentry Boswell is commander of the 28th Bomb Wing at Ellsworth Air Force Base, the largest B-1 combat wing in the U.S. Air Force, with 27 aircraft and more than 3,800 military and civilian employees.

“Once again we are bringing in an event that is regional in scope,” Leverington said.

“We’ve got the B-1 bomber flying over the parade this year and Col. Boswell had a lot to do with making that possible.”

BH Roundup committee to enter Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame

The Black Hills Roundup committee has earned a spot in the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame and Museum of the American Cowboy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

This group is one of 10 inductees to enter the hall on Aug. 2-4 as part of the 2018 class. Belle Fourche’s committee is the 29th to

earn induction.

Belle Fourche will host the 99th Black Hills Roundup, June 30 through July 4, at the Black Hills Roundup Grounds.

“It’s just quite an honor,” Black Hills Roundup committee chairman Clay Crago said of the Hall of Fame induction. He added this recognition is not limited to the current group.

“It’s been 99 years of committee members that have made this rodeo last as long as it has,” Crago said. “We’re coming up on 100 years. There’s not very many rodeos that can say that.”

The Roundup board consists of seven members. Crago said the number of committee members varies between 30 and 50, with the latter number being reached very

close to rodeo time.

“You start with the board, and then we branch it out through the committee to make each job get done, how it needs to be done,” Crago said. The committee fills every conceivable role.

Crago was happy with the announcement.

“It’s just people giving their heart and soul to the Black Hills

Roundup,” Crago said. “It’s cool.”

He has served on the committee for 10 years.

Board and committee are progressive, according to Crago.

The Roundup has added a fourth PRCA Rodeo performance, with the fireworks display expanding to two nights.

Chuck and Bev Watson named grand marshals for 99th BH Roundup

Chuck and Bev Watson have been selected as the 2018 Black Hills Roundup Parade Grand Marshals and will represent the town in the largest Fourth of July parade in the state this summer.

“Chuck and Bev Watson have been vital assets to the community of Belle Fourche for many years,” Mark Leverington, Roundup parade chairman, said. “They define what it means to love a community and an organization, and they show it by their service to both.”

Just before the couple found out about the honor, Bev Watson said they were sent a mysterious package.

“I’d gotten flowers the day before,” she said. “The card said something about ‘The fun has only begun’ with a big old balloon with a smiley face.”

The couple said they were stunned by the recognition.

“Real surprised,” Chuck Watson said.

“It’s a very big honor.”

Bev Watson grew up in Nisland. Chuck Watson, originally from Nebraska, moved

to the area in 1983 to work in American Colloid Company’s bentonite mining plant in Colony, Wyo., just west of Belle Fourche. That is where the two met.

Chuck Watson’s first wife and mother of his five sons died of cancer in 1980. In 1985, Chuck married Bev. The Watsons started a company called Colony Construction, Inc., now known as Tri-State Construction, which sponsored portions of the Roundup for a number of years.

“Back many years ago, I got Bentonite Corp. to come in with their scraper, and we changed the dirt in the arena,” Chuck Watson said. “We’ve supported the Roundup for years and years.”

The couple’s business sponsored the steer wrestling for a number of years beginning in the 90s through 2009, when the Watsons sold the company to their son.

Bev Watson retired July 2017, and Chuck Watson retired in March.

Belle Fourche’s famed Cowboy Band readies for another summer season of music The iconic Belle Fourche Cowboy Band is gearing up for the 2018 season of concerts and parade appearances.

Their season opens at the Belle Fourche Roundup’s Ranch Rodeo on June 30 at 5 p.m. From there, the band will play at the Tri State Museum July 1 at 7 p.m., on the library lawn July 2-3 at 8 p.m., and in the Fourth of July Parade starting at 10:30 a.m.

The band will also be playing in the Day’s of ’76 parade on July 28 at 10 a.m. They will be at the Butte/Lawrence County Fair at 5 p.m.

Aug. 2.

The band will march in the Black Hills Roundup Fourth of July Parade on Tuesday, July 4 at 10 p.m. Thereafter, it will make appearances at the Days of ’76 Parade on July 29; at the Butte/Lawrence County Fair on Aug. 3; at the Ekalaka Days of ’85 on Aug. 13 and at the Newell Labor Day celebration on Sept. 4.

The Cowboy Band began in 1931 when Belle Fourche high school band director Charlie McClung was given a slender funding from the local Chamber of Commerce and the Black Hills Roundup rodeo. With that funding, the enthusiastic support of its hometown – and the talents of 26 musicians – the band was born.

Over the decades, the band has been noted as much for its distinctive apparel as for its musicianship. Band members were originally attired in 10-gallon hats, black and

Roundup rodeo, fireworks – and a chance to march in the Roundup’s Fourth of July Parade. The contemporary band’s attire is red cowboy shirts, blue jeans, white chaps and white hats.

In addition to representing Belle Fourche at events through the Black Hills, the Cowboy Band also provides a Charlie McClung Award to a specially selected Belle Fourche High School sophomore and

funds a $350 scholarship at Black Hills State University.

New members are always being sought and even those who haven’t played their instrument since school days — but would like to brush up their skills and join the band — are encouraged to participate.

Freestyle motocross returns to Roundup

Fans attending this year’s Black Hills Roundup in Belle Fourche will come for the rodeo and stay for the freestyle motocross jumps.

Cowboy Kenny Bartram and the Steel Rodeo tour are this year’s featured specialty act. Bartram said the lineup would likely include Anthony Murray, himself, and/or Matt Buyten. Buyten is a 12-time medalist at the X Games.

Bartram said Anthony Murray and Eric Farr would likely represent the tour here and perform all four rodeo nights: July 1-4.

Bartram is a 38-year-old resident of Stillwater, Okla.

He earned his first professional license in 1995 and competed for a year before starting his Steel Rodeo Tour in 2011.

“My primary goal with the Steel Rodeo Tour was to bring freestyle motocross to audiences that wouldn’t normally see it,” Bartram said. Sites include NASCAR races, musical festivals, and — yes — rodeos.

Those sites appealed to Bartram, and he said he wanted to bring top-quality freestyle action there. A high trick level determines the quality.

Rodeo fans are generally very receptive to freestyle motocross events, Bartram said. He added the Belle Fourche fans were great last year, and that is what he most looks forward to in his return trip.

Bartram said the tour is able to conduct many shows because ramps set up in two to three minutes. Riders compete in the X Games or are champions.

The tour regularly uses many of the same riders so they know and trust one another. Bartram rides a KTM motorcycle, with Murray using a Suzuki and Starr riding a Yamaha.

Preparation before a performance involves a lot of checking everything to make sure it works properly and is in the correct

place. That includes making sure a bike’s gasoline tank is full.

“As simple and stupid as that sounds for somebody that’s been riding for 40 years,” Bartram said, “you’d be amazed at how many guys forget to put gas in their bike.”

Bartram said he tries not to think about anything before a performance. He engages in stretching exercises, and nothing can be done about things.

The thinking occurs when the ramps are inside the arena and the person is on the bike. Bartram ponders the jump length and the procedure for something he has done countless times.

“You get so hyped up in the middle of a show; you honestly have to calm yourself down a little bit and go, ‘OK. You can do this; you can handle it’ and deal with your body, what your muscles can take over and do,” Bartram said.

Weather, especially rain and wind, poses the biggest challenge. Bartram said a bike is similar in size to a 4x2 sheet of plywood.

Wet rubber tires and a wet metal ramp can result in slippage.

“If we have perfect weather, it’s so much fun,” Bartram said. “You kind of forget about the dangers and just enjoy riding.”

A large part of the appeal is the crowd atmosphere. Bartram said the riders feed off the audience’s energy level.

Bartram is familiar with the northern Black Hills, having visited Spearfish and Rapid City. The tour performed at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally a couple of times.

“We’ll put on a good show as long as it’s good weather, and the crowds are into it,” Bartram said. “That makes it a lot of fun for us.”

Riders need what Bartram called “a balanced mentality. You’ve got to be a little bit crazy and a little bit daredevilish, but at the same time, you have to know your limits, and you have to know what is possible.”

Crowd happiness is the main determination of success. Bartram said he, as a competitive person, he wants to ride as well as he can.

The tour will visit 12 to 15 sites this year.

Belle Fourche’s 2-night fireworks display is sure to give city a front-row seat

The upcoming Belle Fourche fireworks display will be among the best around this year as the renowned show doubles in size — spreading out over two nights once again.

This year’s presentations will take place on Monday, July 2 and Tuesday, July 3 after each evening’s Black Hills Roundup rodeo performance. The baseball fields east of the rodeo grounds will host the display around 10 p.m.

“What makes this show so special is the location of it,” said Friz Carlson, the certified pyrotechnician who heads the display. “It is down in a bowl where at the Roundup Grounds you get a front-row seat — but it’s easy to see them all over town. People can sit on their porches and see it.”

This marks the second year of two nights of fireworks as the city and Roundup committee is gearing up for a large celebration for the 100th anniversary of the Roundup in 2019.

Each year Carlson switches up the fireworks show. He said previously that he gives the fireworks manufacturer his wish list upon his order. The company will follow up with him as to what is available.

“There are always the new patterns. We try to make it as good or better than last year’s.”

The pyrotechnic display offers a great display, Carlson said.

“We shoot a good variety of high aerials and an amazing ground show at the end,” Carlson said of the show that has evolved into a Belle Fourche tradition.

Much of the money for the community-driven show comes from donations and the city of Belle Fourche. Other funds come from the Clarkson Family Foundation and other private donors.

The Belle Fourche Reservoir was home to the show for a handful of years until, due to safety concerns, the Bureau of Reclamation would not allow the fireworks show to take place at reservoir after 2004.

The in-town location is an improvement, Carlson said.

He added, however, it is more difficult to collect funds for future shows.

Safety is the primary focus of planning. A site survey is done each year to make sure the area is adequate.

Carlson said a minimum safety zone equaling a 70-foot radius for each inch of shell diameter is needed. The largest shell used is 5 inches, which necessitates a 350-foot radius from where the shells are shot. Most of the shells used in the display measure 3 to 5 inches.

In the days leading up to the Roundup, each display will take six people 12 hours to pre-wire the pyrotechnics and then the same number of people another 12 hours the day of the show to lay out and wire the display.

“All that for 20 minutes (of fireworks),” Carlson joked.

The Roundup Committee and Ranch Rodeo Committee has earmarked a portion of the events to help fund the fireworks display, but Carlson stressed that donations are critical to continue to grow the show. People wishing to donate for next year’s show may send contributions to the Belle Fourche City Finance Office. They are to use a “Fireworks Fund” notation to mark donations.

What do wild cow milking, bucking horse rides and branding contests have in common?

The popular ranch rodeo at this year’s Black Hills Roundup.

The ninth annual ranch rodeo takes place at 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 30, at the Roundup grounds.

The rodeo showcases cowboys’ ranching prowess in a variety of wrangling competitions. While many attendees know the typical rodeo events — bronc riding, roping, barrel racing and bull riding — the ranch rodeo takes competitors back in time.

The events are much more ranch-oriented than rodeo-oriented. The ranch rodeo features wild cow milking, bucking horse rides, branding contests, stray gathering and sorting events.

The ranch rodeo has gained rising interest over the years as fans gather to watch which team is the best in the area Before the event, a free barbecue will be offered at 5:30 p.m. to ranch rodeo ticket holders. The barbecue, has been a Roundup tradition for several years and provides all the typical barbecue fixing’s. Another tradition is pre-rodeo mutton busting for young, up-and-coming ranchers; this is set to start at 5:45 p.m.

The celebration will continue after the ranch rodeo. Kenny Feidler will perform a concert behind the roundup grandstands.

Ranch Rodeo BBQ fixing up good food The Black Hills Ranch Rodeo will begin June 30 at 7 p.m. at the rodeo grounds in Belle Fourche. The Black Hills Roundup Barbecue will be held at 5:30 p.m. prior to the ranch rodeo at the roundup grounds.

The purchase of a rodeo ticket also affords the

chance to take in the first go-round of mutton busting, at 5:45 p.m. that evening.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children. They are available in advance at the Center of the Nation Visitor Center located at 415 5th Avenue in Belle Fourche or at the gate June 30.

Calf scramble goes to the kids Organizers of the Black Hills Roundup will host the calf scramble during intermission of the rodeo, but this year there will be two chances for kids.

During the Tuesday and Wednesday performance of the rodeo, kids can race after calves with ribbons tied to their tails. Grab a ribbon and win a prize.

Carnival

offers fun for all ages Pioneer Staff Reports

The annual Northstar Amusements carnival returns to the Black Hills Roundup, keeping the two-decade tradition alive.

The weeklong carnival kicks off the Roundup, opening at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 28.

Amusement-goers inspired by the rodeo can find rides to jolt their adrenaline, while those not ready to take the excitement to the next level can hop on more mellow rides.

The clean and family-oriented carnival encompasses about a two-and-a-half block area and runs throughout the entire Roundup, ending on July 4.

Wristbands are on sale early in Belle Fourche through the Center of the Nation Visitor Center, Northern Hills Federal Credit Union, Pioneer Bank and Trust, Wells Fargo, the Belle Fourche Chamber of Commerce, and First Interstate Bank.

In Spearfish, they are available at the chamber of commerce. They can also be purchased online at www.blackhillsroundup.com. Early wristband sales, through 4:30 p.m. June 27, are $25 allowing the wearer unlimited rides. Each day requires a new wristband. The cost to purchase a wristband at the carnival is $30.

Tickets for individual rides will also be sold at the carnival. Carnival games can be played for an additional fee.

Powder River celebrates banner year with Black Hills Roundup When Hank and Lori Franzen arrived in Belle Fourche with truckloads of stock for the Black Hills Roundup 30 years ago — the rodeo was losing its appeal, and numbers were down.

“When we first came to the rodeo, there was no one in the stands and no concessions,” Franzen said.

But all of that has changed.

“Now, we have near-sellout crowds all three days,” she said.

The owners of Powder River Rodeo have consistently brought in high-caliber livestock that attract professional cowboys with a stellar record who are looking for a challenge.

But it wasn’t just that. The Franzens enjoyed themselves so much the first year that they have since then dedicated time and energy into bringing one of the largest and longstanding rodeos in the nation back to life.

“Hank and Lori are like family to this rodeo because when they came into the picture, the rodeo was in dire shape,” former Black Hills Roundup chairman Mark Leverington said.

“They really worked hard to improve the overall production and got us where we are today. When it comes to the Franzens, they mean the world to the Roundup.”

The company is headquartered in Riverton, Wyo., and they travel all over the country providing National Rodeo Finals-quality stock for upwards of 90 different events each year.

Lori said she and her husband Hank did what they could to “spice up the rodeo,” add a bit of “pizazz” to the production, and streamline the event to keep people entertained.

“Our livestock is some of the absolute best in the world, and that’s why the Black Hills Roundup is one of the best rodeos in the country,” she said. “I absolutely love being able to play a small part in their success.”

And their contribution of stock at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas is proof.

Because they have the reputation to bring in some of the best stock in the country, professional rodeo athletes from all over started to flock to Belle Fourche.

“When I look back on those days and talk to people who were working so hard to turn the rodeo around, I just feel so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish…and today the stands are packed, and the Roundup is in a whole different market,” Lori said, noting the volunteers, committee members, and local rodeo enthusiasts are all responsible for its success.

“It makes us feel so good to be a part of creating new tactics and new ways to help this rodeo grow…and I’ll never forget the experiences I’ve had over the years.”

Today, the Roundup spices up every Fourth of July weekend in Belle Fourche with its PRCA rodeo action, the largest parade and fireworks display in the area, concerts, carnival, and so much more.

The crew at Powder River Rodeo will load up four semis with 60 head of bucking horses and cruise into town about a week prior to the event. Early arrival is key to keeping the animal athletes healthy and safe.

That way, they can provide a fastpaced, action-packed performance filled with wild entertainment.

“They require a lot of time and effort to keep them healthy and looking good,” Lori said. “They can only perform if they are at 100 percent, so it’s our job to give them 100 percent of our attention.”

But, it’s also a chance for Lori and the rest of her family to enjoy the company of the locals.

“I love Belle Fourche and the people who live there,” Lori said. “Over the years, we’ve built some amazing friendships over the years, and I can’t wait to see everyone.”

Powder River Rodeo Company came to life in February 1986 when they began producing amateur rodeos. Today, they provide stock for more than 90 professional rodeo events in 10 different states each year.

When they first started the company, the Franzens bought 40 horses and 20 bulls from an amateur stock contractor in Kalispell, Mont. Within the next year, the couple purchased their PRCA stock contractors card.

In the fall of 1988, they were given their first opportunity to nominate livestock to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas and had three animals selected.

In the spring of 1989, they purchased a bucking horse named Khadafy Skoal: a world-renowned horse that made several appearances at the Black Hills Roundup during his professional career.

“What a finale to a phenomenal career,” Lori said. “Only 27 animals including Khadafy have been inducted into the hall of fame, and he was the first one to be alive in person for the induction ceremony.

love rodeo, and we want to share that love with everyone we meet,” Lori said.

The couple has two children, who were introduced to rodeo very early on. As adults, they provide their enthusiasm and experience to the family-owned business.

Their daughter Jill Franzen-Loden is one of the most sought-after sound technicians in the professional rodeo circuit. She has showcased her talents during the Black Hills Roundup and will be doing so in Greeley, Colo.

But, not to be outdone, their son John Franzen is a professional rodeo athlete himself and is very involved with the company.

Other stock contractors at this year’s Black Hills Roundup are Franklin Rodeo, Northcott, Macza, and J-J Rodeo.

PRCA rodeo performances are set for 7 p.m. July 1, 7 p.m. July 2, 7 p.m. July 3, 7 p.m. and 3 p.m. July 4.

Big changes for queen contest Miss Rodeo SD contest not part of Roundup, but Miss Black Hills Roundup contest scheduled

The Black Hills Roundup will be without a major aspect of the annual event – the Miss Rodeo South Dakota contest has been pushed back to later in the year.

But there will still be a queen contest.

Introducing, “the first, and hopefully annual,” Miss Black Hills Roundup contest.

“The BH Roundup board and Kathy Thompson, (Miss Rodeo South Dakota pageant director) together decided it would be nice to have some pageantry at the Black Hills Roundup because the queen is the ambassador for rodeo and the Western way of life,” said Sherry Smeenk, pageant direct for the Miss Black Hills Roundup contest. “Therefore the Black Hills Roundup Queen Contest was born.”

She said queens assist with the rodeo and are a role model for the sport of rodeo as well as girls.

Smeenk added it is nice to be able to give back to a pageant as her two daughters competed in the contests over the years, and whether the contestants win or not, the pageants help the contestants grow personally.

“They’ll be able to speak

better in public, and it gives them a lot of confidence in their lives which extends on to when they grow up, get jobs. It makes it easier in life to have built confidence along the way,” Smeenk said.

This year, there are seven contestants in three divisions.

“I’m excited to have

a new contest for the girls to participate in,” Smeenk said.

Changes made to the Miss Rodeo South Dakota pageant were made this year. It will be held Sept. 7-8 in Belle Fourche, “We eliminated the lady-in-waiting part of pageant,” said Kathy Thompson, Miss Rodeo South Dakota pageant director.

The lady-in-waiting title extended for six months adding more commitments to the winner of the contest. Thompson said it was at time difficult to meet the commitments for those ladies-in-waiting who were in school or worked.

Coronation for Miss Rodeo South Dakota will be Jan. 1.

Contestants announced for Miss Black Hills Roundup Pageant Kade Bettelyoun

Kade Bettelyoun is from Pine Ridge, South Dakota and is the 19-yearold of JoDee Bettelyoun.

Kade has just finished her first year of college at the University of Wisconsin in River Falls, Wisconsin.

There she studied biology with a biomedical emphasis and competed on the Intercollegiate Rodeo Team. She is looking forward to continuing her education at the University of South Dakota and plans on attending medical school there in the future. Kade has been riding horse since she was three years old and has been competing in rodeo since she was four years old. Her events include: barrel racing, breakaway roping, team roping, pole bending, and goat tying. Kade has previously held the title of Miss Oglala Lakota National Rodeo Queen where she had the opportunity to travel to the Indian National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada to represent her People of the Oglala Nation and the sport of Rodeo. Kade looks forward to competing in the Miss Black Hills Roundup Pageant and wishes all the contestants the best of luck!

Victoria Hagg, 21, is the daughter of Kent and Karin Hagg of Rapid City. She is a senior at the University of South Dakota, pursuing her degree in health sciences in preparation to attend graduate school for a career as a physician’s assistant.

In addition to achieving high academic honors, Victoria is active in enriching the lives of children and people with special needs through programs like 4H, SESDAC, CASA, and at Outdoor Campus West. Victoria’s hobbies range from backpacking, rock climbing, horse showing, and K – 9 agility training.

Over the last seven years, Victoria has served the sport of rodeo through her representation as the 2012 Miss Newell Labor Day, 2014 Miss Boss Cowman, 2015 Perkins County Rodeo Queen, 2016 Miss Days of ’76, and 2017 Miss Rodeo Aberdeen. She has shown her leadership through her many executive positions in University organizations like Kappa Alpha Theta, the USD Rock Climbing Club, the USD Physician’s Assistant Club, College Republicans, and Health Sciences Club.

Carrietta Schalesky is the 24-yearold daughter of T.W. and Faye Schalesky. She has a sister Gail and brother Jacob. The family ranch 45 miles Northwest of Faith, SD is where she calls home.

Carrietta graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science, Business and Production.

Carrietta is very passionate about the western way of life and to be a part of keeping the agricultural heritage alive, she has now moved to the family ranch to continue as a third-generation rancher full time. The family owned operation raises Charolais and Angus cattle, Rambouillet sheep, and purebred Quarter horses.

Carrietta enjoys training horses, singing, photography, rodeo, playing basketball, and sharing her love of agriculture with others.

Kiara Brown Kiara Brown of Whitewood is the 16 year old daughter of Raye Brown.

She completed her sophomore year at Sturgis Brown High School. She participates in pep and concert band, drumline and choir. She is a 7-year member of the Horseshoe 4-H club; currently serves as the vice president.

Kiara loves two sports, rodeo and gymnastics. In rodeo, she competes in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, breakaway roping, and queen contests.

Kiara’s past titles include 2012 Jr. Jr. Butte Co. Ambassador, 2013 Jr. Jr. NURC Ambassador, 2014 Newell Labor Day Jr. Queen, 2015 Jr. Southwest Ambassador and 2016 Jr. Butte Co. Ambassador and 2017 Jr. Miss Days of ’76.

As for her love of gymnastics, she now trains year around at Just Jymanstics. She competes across the United States. Her resume includes 2017 National Level 10 Championships, 5 Region 4 Championships and medalist, 3 South Dakota All Star awards, 5 State All Around titles and 13 State Event Championships along with 261 medals in her career.

Remi Crago is the 7-yearold daughter of Justin and Stephanie Crago of St. Onge. She recently completed first grade at Spearfish West Elementary.

Remi has been in the Spearfish Gymnastics Academy for 4 years, and has also taken ballet and tap dancing. She has competed in the Newell Family Playday series in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tail un-tying, and flag race for 3 years.

She has competed in the mutton busting at the Newell Labor Day Rodeo, and won the title of Little Miss Labor Day Rodeo in 2017. Remi has fun modeling flower girl dresses in bridal shows, and has competed for the title of Little Miss Firecracker. During the summer she loves to drive her pony Popeye, and go on wagon trains with her grandpa Jerry. In her spare time she enjoys reading, singing, swimming, roller blading, working with animals, riding horses, and practicing her rodeo events. Ema has been riding horses since she was 3.

Her horse Leo and her did everything together, from helping with round up for brandings to the casual stroll in the pasture. Last year, Ema did barrels for the first time ever in the Crook County Youth Rodeo and took third in her division. Ema loves

and be just like Fowlkes, who went on to be Miss Black Hills Stock Show and pursue her dream to compete for Miss Rodeo USA. Ema hopes to be a great and positive role model for girls.

Lily Sexton Lily Sexton is the 9-year-old daughter of J.R. & Tara Olson and Scot Sexton. She is from Whitewood and will be a 4th-grader at Whitewood Elementary.

Lily has a love of horses and enjoys playdays, rodeos, and chasing steers on her horse Hollywood. Her rodeo events she competes in are barrels, poles, goat tying, and flag race. She is currently

learning to breakaway.

Lily is a member of the Horseshoe 4-H club and is involved in 4-H shooting sports, volleyball, basketball, music, and piano. She also raises Mini Rex rabbits to show in 4-H and sell in the fall.

Lily holds the title of the 2017 Days of ‘76 Rodeo Princess. Lily wishes the best of luck to all the contestants at the 99th Annual Black Hills Roundup!

Outgoing 2018 Miss Rodeo SD Kay Marrs

Born and raised near the beautiful Black Hills, Kay Marrs is the 23-year-old daughter of Paul and Linda Marrs. She is a graduate of South Dakota State University, earning a degree in animal science and plans to put her education to work on her family’s ranch near Whitewood. Growing up immersed in the ranching lifestyle, Kay naturally acquired a love for horses, livestock, and rodeo. Prior to college, Kay was actively involved in 4-H for 11 years in many areas including showing livestock, livestock judging, archery, and foods and nutrition. Her interest in promoting the sport of rodeo began at a young age and in 2011, Kay was honored to serve as Jr. Miss Rodeo South Dakota.

Junior Miss Rodeo South Dakota, Kayla Engwicht, is the 18-year-old daughter of Mike and Connie Engwicht. She lives on a farm by Elkton.

Kayla graduated from Elkton high school this past year and is making her way into college. In high school, she participated in FFA and did horse judging as her Career Development Event.

She has been doing rodeo queen pageants since she was 12 years old and she also competes in barrel racing, pole bending, goat tying, and team roping. She is currently working with a project horse named Bullseye, and hopes to make him into her new all-around horse. “Good stock keeps the cowboys coming,” Crago said. “With the cowboys coming, the fans come to watch them.”

Crago said the Roundup has attracted more sponsors, which he credited for a better show. “That’s what we’re always striving for,” he added.

He anticipates quite a number of committee members are planning to attend the August ceremony.

The Hall of Fame induction will not really change the way the committee does things.

“It’s just more or less kind of an ‘atta boy; you’re doing it right. Keep going strong,” Crago said.

PARADE MARSHALS families face unexpected emergencies. Funds are raised through the purchase of posters, T-shirts, benefit auctions and dinners, golf tournaments, and more.

“It’s very very rewarding,” she said. “We’re really grateful for all the people that come to our events to help us raise the money that we need.”

The nonprofit recently calculated that it has donated more than $175,000 to Black Hills families in need since 2010.

“The Roundup is a huge draw for Belle Fourche,” Bev Watson said. “It does a lot for our community and a lot of other communities around the area.”

Chuck Watson, an avid traveler and fisherman, is enjoying his retirement.

“I go from catching tuna and mahi-mahi in Mexico to catching halibut, and ling cod, and salmon in Alaska,” he said. “We have a fish fry with (Belle Fourche residents) Chris and Judy Kling each fall and anymore like 150 people show up to that. It’s quite a fall party.”

When she’s not volunteering her time with Chutes for Charity, Bev Watson enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends. The couple has 15 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren, with more on the way.

The Watsons were a natural choice for the Roundup, Leverington said.

“When their name was suggested to the parade committee, everybody confirmed that they would be a terrific choice to represent the Black Hills Roundup,” he said. “Not only have they employed many people throughout the years, but to this day they continue to volunteer countless hours to the community, including this great event, the Black Hills Roundup. We could not have a better husband and wife to be honored as our grand marshals.”

Rodeo time

The 99th Black Hills Roundup will be from June 30-July 4 in Belle Fourche. Rodeo, carnival, parade, and fireworks are all on tap to be enjoyed through Independence weekend.

TEAM ROPING The heeler, must rope the steer’s hind feet to stop the clock. If he catches only one foot, a fivesecond penalty is awarded. If he misses, the team is disqualified.

The steer gets a head start. If the header leaves the roping chute before giving the steer the determined head start, the team receives a 10-second penalty.

The header, must rope the steer around the horns or full head of the animal. He then turns left, straightening out the steer for his partner to rope.

SADDLE BRONC RIDING Saddle bronc riders have only a thick rein attached to his horse’s halter. Using one hand, the cowboy tries to stay securely seated in his saddle. If he touches any part of the horse or his own body with his free hand, he is disqualified.

High Score WINS – 0-100 pts. total (2) Judges each score the following: Horse – 0-50 pts.

Cowboy – 0-50 pts.

Saddle bronc riders, must mark out their horses on the first jump from the chute. To properly mark out his horse, the saddle bronc rider must have both heels touching the animal above the point of its shoulders when it makes its first jump from the chute. If the rider misses his mark, he receives no score.

BAREBACK RIDING

BARREL RACING In barrel racing a cowgirl and her horse race against the clock. Horse and rider enters the arena at full speed and race around three barrels positioned in a clover pattern, then race back to the finish line. The fastest time among all the competitors is the winner, and times are recorded in 1/100 of a second. Racers are penalized five seconds for each barrel knocked over during the run.

Bareback riders stay aboard their horse, using a rigging made of leather and rawhide.

The rigging, which resembles a suitcase handle on a strap, is placed atop the horse’s withers and secured with a cinch.

STEER WRESTLING The steer wrestler, or bulldogger, starts on horseback in a box.

The steer gets a head start, determined by the size of the arena.

High Score WINS – 0-100 pts. total (2) Judges each score the following: Horse – 0-50 pts.

Cowboy – 0-50 pts.

Upon leaving the bucking chute, bareback riders must keep their spurs at the point of the horse’s shoulders until the horses feet hit the ground.

The calf receives a head start that is determined by the length of the arena.

When the calf reaches its advantage point, the barrier is released. If the roper breaks the barrier before the calf reaches its head start, the cowboy is assessed a 10-second penalty.

When the roper finishes tying the calf, he throws his hands in the air as a signal that the run is completed.

The roper then remounts his horse, rides forward to create slack in the rope and waits six seconds to see if the calf remains tied.

A cowboy’s success in tie-down roping depends on the precise teamwork with his horse.

Special Rodeo gives glimpse into rural lifestyle

BELLE FOURCHE — The Special Rodeo at the Black Hills Roundup Grounds in Belle Fourche gave special-needs individuals the opportunity to sample the rodeo way of life.

Rael Ruggles of Rapid City was able to do a bit of everything that included riding through a barrel course, practice roping, face painting, and petting animals including a bull and small rabbits.

“I would say everything equally,” the 27-year-old Ruggles said when asked what she enjoyed the most. June 16 marked the first time she had participated in this event.

The chance to ride horses prompted Ruggles to make the trip to Belle Fourche.

“I love horses,” she said.

Ruggles is a cousin to Spearfish’s Jace Engesser, who was one of the many high school rodeo athletes helping the event participants. The Engesser family helped

Ruggles learn to ride.

“We just got her on horses that we knew wouldn’t do anything,” Engesser said in describing how Ruggles started riding.

What does Ruggles enjoy the most about horses, from Engesser’s perspective?

“Pretty much the animal, a four-legged athlete that she can ride and hang out with,” he said.

“She really enjoys them; I think she connects with them,” he added.

One of the high school helpers was Sage Gabriel, whose weekend started with her being crowned the new Miss Rodeo South Dakota. She lives in the Philip area.

“I just love seeing everyone’s smiles, and everyone just so happy,” Gabriel said.

“It really helps you understand how life is great.”

Gabriel most enjoyed helping participants get on the horses, and seeing their faces.

She and other rodeo queens also posed for photos with many participants.

The June 16 special needs rodeo gave participants a chance to get a hand-on rodeo experience.
