Black Hills Roundup A celebration of America’s Western heritage

This is the 96th annual Black Hills Roundup. All this and more draws tens of thousands of people to Belle Fourche from across the globe. And this

year’s Black Hills Roundup Committee Chairman Ferman Clarkson, like many Belle Fourche residents, is immensely proud of the Roundup, one of a handful of 100 percent volunteer run events of its kind in the nation.

This is Clarkson’s second year in a row as chairman of the Black Hills Roundup Committee, but the 65-yearold retired defense engineer grew up around the event and is a lifetime fan of the rodeo.

“I grew up in Belle Fourche and the

Roundup was always the center of the summer celebration,” Clarkson said.

“I’ve been watching it all my life, so I decided to get involved.”

One of Clarkson’s earliest rodeo memories, however, comes from catching rodeo legend and South Dakota native Casey Tibbs at a rodeo in Nemo in the ‘60s.

“I was just kid with my father,” Clarkson said. “I didn’t know too much about it, but I just knew there was a lot of excitement — people wanting to see him. He came in on an airplane, got out, rode his horse in, competed, got back in his plane, and flew away.”

While Casey Tibbs’ glamorous style certainly stuck with Clarkson, he’s big on the roots of rodeo, naming saddle bronc riding his favorite event.

“I think it goes back to all the days before there was rodeo,” he said. “A cowboy would say he had a horse that couldn’t be ridden, and somebody else said, ‘I can ride anything.’”

Ninety-six years ago, when the Black Hills Roundup began, there wasn’t much but those rodeo roots events on the schedule. Things have changed a lot since then. Roundup is now a multi-day celebration comprised of a wide variety of events, including a golf tournament, a queen contest, a carnival, concerts, a parade, and so much more.

But after nigh on a century of changes

the Roundup hasn’t lost its heart. It’s somehow managed to remain appealing to the rodeo purist while simultaneously attracting those whom wouldn’t be caught dead in a cowboy hat.

For many people in and around the Black Hills region the Fourth of July means Roundup. Belle Fourche Mayor Gloria Landphere is one of these people.

She feels Roundup is a signature event showcasing the past, present, and future of Belle Fourche.

“Belle Fourche is the perfect setting for an exciting event like the Black Hills Roundup, it’s a town with a long storied history of cowboys, ranch life, and rodeo,” she said.

Landphere grew up in Belle Fourche and fondly recalls playing clarinet with the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band at Roundups in her high school and college years. Though she’d never try her hand at bronc riding, Landphere looks forward to the Roundup each summer.

“The Roundup offers many unique experiences throughout the week’s festivities: the rodeo events, the parade, the carnival, the spectacular fireworks display, and more,” she said. “It’s an exciting time, it really is.”

The 96th Annual Black Hills Roundup runs from Wednesday, July 1 to Sunday, July 5, with the spectacular Roundup Fireworks show blasting off on the most appropriate day, Saturday, July 3.

The 96th Roundup parade salutes the red, white, and blue

This year marks the 96th annual Black Hills Roundup Parade that serves as a kick off to the nation’s birth.

Traditionally, the Roundup is marked with all types of festivities. The parade held on the Fourth of July is one of those main events with more than 10,000 spectators lining the parade route each year. Many businesses and individuals compete for top honors and cash prizes.

As thousands across the nation celebrate both freedoms that were won and freedoms continuing to be fought for, Belle Fourche gears up for its busiest three days of the year with one of its main events, the Fourth of July parade.

The parade starts at 10:30 a.m. July 4 and will follow its usual route that begins at the corner of National Street and Seventh Avenue, proceeds down Seventh Avenue, then following State Street, and ending at U.S. Highway 85. Don and Delores West will be honored as they celebrate the holiday as parade grand marshals.

“We love the red, white, and blue,” is this year’s theme.

A cash prize goes to the entry that best represents the theme. There will be other cash prizes for additional categories as well.

Mark Leverington, parade chairman is serving his fourth year in this role. He said, “To have a patriotic parade theme always is a good idea, as we celebrate our nation's birth.” He spoke of the chairman’s position saying, “It's

a position that is filled with challenge, stress, and a lot of fun. I really enjoyed working with a great team of people and getting to know more people is part of what I enjoy with the job.”

“The commander of Ellsworth Air Force Base will join us at the start. We have a very special relationship with Ellsworth and it's a great honor that the commander would choose this parade every year,” Leverington said.“Once again we are bringing in an event that is regional in scope.”

Cowboy Band dates back decades

They definitely put a certain special spark in the Fourth of July.

“We literally lead the parade,” said long-time band member Tim Speidel, a percussionist and “go-to guy” for the Belle Fourche Cowboy Band. “It’s kind of fun.

It’s fun to get everyone back together and fun to be participating in events like the Roundup, the Days of ’76 parade, the Butte/Lawrence County Fair. There’s just something about a band that puts a spark in events.”

The group, whose ranks swell to anywhere between 45 and 65, started performing in the Roundup parade in 1931.

Throughout the next decades, the band has brought credit and publicity to Belle Fourche, playing summer engagements from Miles City, Mont., to Colorado Springs, Colo., to Sheridan, Wyo. In 1935, the band was invited to play for visiting dignitaries at the Stratosphere Bowl during the time the National Geographic Society and the Army were making their famous balloon flights.

In 1949, the band was asked to be the official band at the “Pike’s Peak or Bust” rodeo in Colorado Springs, Colo. In June of 1953, the band’s presence was requested

at a gathering of Young Republicans that President Eisenhower was addressing at Mount Rushmore.

There have been many Cowboy Band directors, but the best known was the original director, Charlie McClung, who was said to have made the following statement: “I can get more pep out of that cowboy bunch than any band I ever waved a baton in front of.”

In 1983, after a lapse in the band organization, the first mass reunion ever of Cowboy Band members was held.

The band’s successful appearances during the Fourth of July holiday renewed interest in the band, and now a reunion is held every year during this time with a “round up” being held every third year.

“The cowboy band has been going since 1931 so we really feel strongly about keeping it alive,” said long-time member JeanClaire Hamblin.

The band plays for the three rodeo performances, the parade, class reunions and other events, and presents several concerts at the Chassell Memorial band shell in Herrmann Park and at the Newell City Park.

The original uniforms have given way to bright red cowboy shirts, blue jeans, white chaps, and white hats.

Nationally known act to appear at BH Roundup

By Jason Gross Black Hills Pioneer An act that has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, the David Letterman Show, and National Football League halftime shows will appear at this year’s Black Hills Roundup, set for the Roundup grounds in Belle Fourche.

The resident of Tupelo, Miss., features an act with monkeys and border collies.

Lepard originally competed as a bull rider but received nine major surgeries during his career. Spending nine days in a hospital bed following his ninth major surgery gave him a lot of time to reflect.

“I got to thinking about they don’t need bull riders out there; they need bull fighters,” Lepard said.

He attended a bull fighting school under world champion Jimmy Anderson, who told Lepard he would not last long because of his wild style. Anderson said in 1983 that Lepard needed an act.

Lepard had dreamed of owning a monkey, and he wanted an act people would always remember.

“My job, number 1, is to entertain the crowd,” he said. “There’s a certain roar that I like to hear.”

Lepard gets the dogs from shelters and people around the country. He keeps them until they are about 8 years old.

“Then somewhere across the United States, I choose people that I think would love an animal and let them live a dog’s life,” he said.

The animals determine when they are ready for training. Lepard said monkeys are exotic animals, so they will do what they wish.

“I put myself in their position,” Lepard said. “I think, ‘How is it going to be how they feel?’” He cares for the animals like they are his children.

This July will mark Lepard’s first Black Hills Roundup performance. He most looks forward to being here with his family, which has never been to South Dakota.

Lepard considers himself a blessed man for a career that has included appearances on the Jay Leno and David Letterman television shows.

What gives Lepard the greatest satisfaction?

He said he is never satisfied, instead always trying to do more and do better. He added that God is his only judge.

“I love challenges, and I love pressure,” he said.

Belle Fourche fireworks gives city a front-row seat Pioneer staff reports The upcoming Belle Fourche fireworks display will be among the best around.

This year’s presentation will take place on Friday, July 3 after the second Black Hills Roundup rodeo performance. The ball fields east of the rodeo grounds will host the display around 10 p.m.

“What makes this show so special is the location of it,” said Friz Carlson a certified pyrotechnician who heads the display. “It is down in a bowl where at the Roundup Grounds you get a front-row seat, but its easy to see them all over town. From downtown, Scott Peterson Motors, Watertank Hill, up by Taco John’s, it’s a good show, and you don’t have to fight the crowds if you don’t want.”

This year’s show will be similar to those in years’ past, however there will be some new displays.

“There’s always something new,” Carlson said. “When I order the fireworks there is a wish list that I put down.

Then (later) we get back with them and see what I can and can’t get.”

Carlson said that his high school class has had six classmates pass away since graduation. During this

year’s fireworks display, he will fire six purple shells to begin the show – one in honor of each classmate.

Additionally, Carlson said his father just passed away and he is planning to do something special for the man who “loved the fireworks.”

The pyrotechnic display offers a great display, he said.

“We shoot a good variety of high aerials and an amazing ground show at the end,” Carlson said previously of the show that has evolved into a Belle Fourche tradition.

This year, Carlson has about a $17,000 budget to light up the night’s sky.

Many colors and special effects dominate the aerial display. The ending ground show features Y-shape, zigzag, and salute elements; fan cakes go in all directions.

“There is a lot of color in the air at one time,” Carlson said. Y-shape, zigzag, and salute refer to the way the shells exit the cake, which is a box full of shells.

Much of the money for the community-driven show comes from donations and the city of Belle Fourche.

Other funds come from the Clarkson Foundation.

“People can sit on their porches and see it,” Carlson said of the display, which has been held near the Roundup Grounds since 2007. “It’s more user-friendly.”

The Belle Fourche Reservoir was home to the show in

2003 and 2004. It was not held for the next few years as Carlson and others looked for another site.

Carlson said the Bureau of Reclamation did not allow the fireworks show to occur at reservoir after 2004 due to safety concerns.

The in-town location is an improvement, Carlson said.

He added, however, it is more difficult to collect funds for future shows.

Safety is the primary focus of planning. A site survey is done each year to make sure the area is adequate.

Carlson said a minimum safety zone equaling a 70foot radius for each inch of shell diameter is needed. The largest shell used is 5 inches, which necessitates a 350foot radius from where the shells are shot.

Most of the shells used in the display measure 3 to 5 inches.

People wishing to donate for next year’s show may send contributions to the Belle Fourche City Finance Office. They are to use a “Fireworks Fund” notation to mark donations.

The Roundup Committee and Ranch Rodeo Committee has earmarked a portion of the events to help fund the fireworks display, but Carlson stressed that donations are critical to continue to grow the show.

Ranch Rodeo a more ranch-oriented event Pioneer

What do wild cow milking, bucking horse rides and branding contests have in common?

The popular ranch rodeo at this year’s Black Hills Roundup.

The sixth annual ranch rodeo takes place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, at the Roundup grounds.

The rodeo showcases cowboys’ ranching prowess in a variety of wrangling competitions. While many attendees know the typical rodeo events — bronc riding, roping, barrel racing and bull riding — the ranch rodeo takes competitors back in time.

The events are much more ranch-oriented than rodeo-oriented. The ranch rodeo features wild cow milking, bucking horse rides, branding contests, stray gathering and sorting events.

The ranch rodeo has gained additional interest this year with applications coming in from local ranchers as well as those from surrounding states.

“It adds to our Western flavor and the history of this community, which has a history of ranching,” Black Hills Roundup Chairman Ferman Clarkson said. “I enjoy watching our locals compete.”

Before the event, a free barbecue will be offered to ranch rodeo ticket holders. The barbecue, which starts at 5 p.m., has been a Roundup tradition for several

years and provides all the typical barbecue fixing’s.

Another tradition is pre-rodeo mutton busting for young, up-and-coming ranchers; this is set to start at 5:45 p.m.

The celebration will continue after the rodeo. The Wilk Brothers from Rapid City will perform a concert behind the roundup grandstands.

Clarkson said this year’s ranch rodeo festivities would be the same as a year ago.

The top four contestants in the ranch rodeo bronc riding will compete during the intermission of the first performance of the Black Hills Roundup rodeo held on Thursday, July 2. The winner of the contest will receive $700, and the second-place finisher will take home $300.

Carnival offers fun for all ages

The annual NorthStar Amusement Carnival returns to the Black Hills Roundup this year, keeping the two-decade tradition alive.

The weeklong carnival kicks off the Roundup, opening at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1.

Amusement-goers inspired by the rodeo can find rides to jolt their adrenaline, while those not ready to take the excitement to the next level can hop on more mellow rides.

The clean and family-oriented carnival encompasses about a two-and-a-half block area and runs throughout the entire Roundup, ending on July 5.

Wristbands are on sale early through the Belle Fourche Visitor Center.

Wristbands are on sale for $22 allowing the wearer unlimited rides. Each day

requires a new wristband.

Tickets for individual rides will also be sold at the carnival. Carnival games can be played for an additional fee.

Brian Potter to serve, entertain at BH Roundup

Brian Potter will serve as bull fighter, clown, and barrel man at this year’s Black Hills Roundup, held at the Roundup Grounds in Belle Fourche.

Potter wants to play a funny, entertaining part of the overall rodeo production. He stressed, however, that he is only a piece of a large puzzle.

“I’m not there to be the show,” he said from his home in Newville, Ala. “It’s called a rodeo, not a clowning event.”

Potter worked as a professional bullfighter for 10 years and moved into comedy as he got older. He competed in bareback riding and bull riding, and became involved with the raising of bucking bulls.

“With practice bucking the bulls at the house, somebody had to fight bulls,” he said. “So, I started fighting bulls.” He later took this activity to the professional level.

The most important aspect of bull fighting, naturally, is protecting the bull rider. “You need to know cattle; it’s what we call ‘being savvy,’” he said. Potter added that a bull fighter also needs timing.

What does Potter see as the most important part of being a rodeo clown?

“Absolutely, to entertain the crowd,” he said. “My job is to fill in the transition from one event to the next, or any slow portions of the rodeo.”

Being a barrelman entails a combination of things. Potter’s role is to entertain, but he is prepared to assist the bull fighter in protecting the rider.

Potter truly enjoys meeting people, including fans and various committee members, while traveling throughout North America and Canada. “I enjoy taking my kids the most,” he said.

Each rodeo requires Potter to work for a completely new set of people, a new announcer, and so forth. He said he must come in and make things go well.

Potter was asked how it went for him as far as learning the basics.

“It came to me fairly easy because I was around livestock and been in rodeo for a long time,” he said of bull fighter and barrelman basics. He gained PRCA membership in 1988.

The comedy basics were more difficult for Potter because of his laid-back, shy, quiet nature. “I had to learn to just let my guard down and go out and be an actor,” he said.

Potter said he is still laid-back but becomes a different person inside the arena.

“The first day is usually the most hectic because you’ve got all these meetings,” Potter said in describing rodeo preparation.

He also gets his acts ready and visits with the announcer to make sure they are on the same wavelength.

Slapstick comedy is part of Potter’s act, which features the “Motorcross Mike” and “Redneck Fireworks” personas.

“Motorcross Mike” is a 5-minute act in which Potter plays a clown who gets tricked into riding a motorcycle.

In “Redneck Fireworks,” Potter tries to put on a fireworks show, but things do not go as planned.

“A lot of my acts will have a surprise,” he said.

This will mark Potter’s first appearance at the Black Hills Roundup.

“I hear that Belle Fourche is a very beautiful area, and I hear it’s a great rodeo,” Potter said. He also looks forward to giving his daughter the chance to see a new place.

Powder River Rodeo

provides top quality stock for Roundup

After 27 dedicated years, Wyoming-based stock company becomes rodeo mainstay Pioneer staff reports When Hank and Lori Franzen arrived in Belle Fourche with truckloads of stock for the Black Hills Roundup 27 years ago — the rodeo was losing its appeal and numbers were down.

“When we first came to the rodeo there was no one in the stands and no concessions,” Franzen said.

But all of that has changed.

“Now we have near sellout crowds all three days,” she said.

The owners of Powder River Rodeo have consistently brought in high-caliber livestock that attract professional cowboys with a stellar record who are looking for a challenge. But, it wasn’t just that — the Franzens enjoyed themselves so much the first year that they have since then dedicated time and energy into bringing one of the largest and longstanding rodeos in the nation back to life.

“Hank and Lori are like family to this rodeo because when they came into the picture, the rodeo was in dire shape,” said former Black Hills Roundup chairman Mark Leverington. “They really worked hard to improve the overall production and got us where we are today. When it comes to the Franzens, they mean the world to the Roundup.”

The company is headquartered in Riverton, Wyo., and they travel all over the country providing National Finals Rodeo-quality stock for upwards of 90 different events each year.

Lori said she and her husband Hank did what they could to “spice up the rodeo,” add a bit of “pizazz” to the production, and streamline the event to keep people entertained.

“Our livestock is some of the absolute best in the world and that’s why the Black Hills Roundup is one of the best rodeos in the country,” she said. “I absolutely love being able to play a small part in their success.”

And their contribution

of stock at the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas is proof.

Last year, Powder River Rodeo had six horses at the NFR. Because they have the reputation to bring in some of the best stock in the country, professional rodeo athletes from all over started to flock to Belle Fourche.

“When I look back on those days and talk to people who were working so hard to turn the rodeo around, I just feel so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish … and today the stands are packed and the Roundup is in a whole different market,” she said, noting the volunteers, committee members and local rodeo enthusiasts are all responsible for its success. “It makes us feel so good to be a part of creating new tactics and new ways to help this rodeo grow … and I’ll never forget the experiences I’ve had over the years.”

Today, the Roundup spices up every Fourth of July weekend in Belle Fourche with its PRCA rodeo action, the largest parade and fireworks display in the area, concerts, carnival and so much more.

The crew at Powder River Rodeo will load up four semis with 60 head of bucking horses and cruise into town about a week prior to the event. Early arrival is key to keeping the animal athletes healthy and safe. That way, they can provide a fast-paced, action-packed performance filled with wild entertainment.

“They require a lot of time and effort to keep them healthy and looking good,” Lori said. “They can only perform if they are at 100 percent, so it’s our job to give them 100 percent of our attention.”

But, it’s also a chance for Lori and the rest of her family to enjoy the company of the locals.

“I love Belle Fourche and the people who live there,” Lori said. “Over the years we’ve built some amazing friendships over the years, and I can’t wait to see everyone.”

Powder River Rodeo Company came to life in February 1986 when they began producing amateur rodeos, and today they provide stock for more than 90 professional rodeo events in 10 different states each year.

When they first started the company, the Franzens bought 40 horses and 20 bulls from an amateur stock contractor in Kalispell, Mont. Within the next year, the couple purchased their PRCA stock contractors card. In the fall of 1988 they were given their first opportunity to nominate livestock to the National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nev., and had three animals selected. In the spring of 1989 they purchased a bucking horse named Khadafy Skoal, a world-renowned horse that has made several appearances at the Black Hills Roundup during his professional career. In fact, he was selected and honored as one of six 2012 Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Inductees this year.

“What a finale to a phenomenal career,” Lori said. “Only 27 animals including Khadafy have been inducted into the hall of fame, and he was the first one to be alive in person for the induction ceremony.”

At this year’s Roundup, horses such as Craig at Midnight, Miss Chestnut, Look Again, Rain Dance and Show Boat will give their riders a run for their money.

Lori said the support of her husband and her children over the years also play an important role.

“Family is an important aspect of our operation because we all truly love rodeo, and we want to share that love with everyone we meet,” Lori said.

The couple has two children, who were introduced to rodeo very early on. As adults they provide their enthusiasm and experience to the family owned business. Their daughter Jill Franzen Schrock is one of the most sought after sound technicians in the professional rodeo circuit. She has showcased her talents during the Black Hills Roundup for several years. But, not to be outdone, their son John Franzen is a professional rodeo athlete himself and is very involved with the company.

D&H Cattle Company will continue to provide the bulls for the Roundup. Powder River Rodeo won’t be the only company to provide bucking horses this year.

Contestants Announced for Rodeo Pageants Miss Rodeo South Dakota Contestants Stephanie Gruener Born and raised on the South Dakota prairie, Stephanie Gruener is the 23-year-old daughter of Steven and Debra Gruener of Brandt, S.D. She has two older sisters, Kristina and Michelle. While in high school she was involved with a variety of activities including volleyball, basketball, track, chorus, band, and debate. She was also a member of the key club, art club, and 4-H Young Riders.

After high school, Stephanie attended South Dakota State University and received a degree in agricultural business and

a minor in equine studies. She was a member of the SDSU Varsity Equestrian Team and SDSU rodeo.

Stephanie graduated in May 2014 and pursued a career as a recruiter at Aerotek in Sioux Falls, S.D. Stephanie has achieved the titles of 2015 Miss Black Hills Stock Show Rodeo Queen, 2014 Miss Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Queen, and 2013 Miss Jackrabbit Stampede Queen. Stephanie is sponsored by the Black Hills Stock Show and she would like to thank everyone who has supported her.

Carrietta Schalesky Carrietta Schalesky is the 21-year-old daughter of T.W. and Faye Schalesky.

She has a sister Gail and brother Jacob.

The family ranch 45 miles southeast of Bison, S.D. is where she calls home. This fall she will attend South Dakota State University as a senior to pursue a degree in animal science-business and production. Carrietta and her sister hope to build a vet clinic in their home community after completing college educations.

Carrietta hopes to one day have a ranch of her own or take over the family oper-

ation to raise charolais and angus cattle, rambouillet sheep, and purebred quarter horses.

Shamee Merkel Shamee Merkel is the 24-year-old daughter of Amanda and Ross Merkel and Kim Merkel of Ellendale, N.D. A 2009 graduate of Ellendale Public School, she currently lives in Aberdeen, S.D., holding jobs at The Buckle and Maverick’s Steaks and Cocktails. Having two jobs does slow this cowgirl down. Everyday she makes time to care for her horse prepping for horse shows.

She has recently picked up hunter under saddle. It’s proving to be trying, but she is enjoying every minute. Like most cowgirls, her

greatest accomplishment would be purchasing her own horse. Her passion for horses started at a young age and has only grown over the years.

Rodeos and horses have been an influential part of Shamee’s life, and she believes that rodeo embodies the standards by which she strives to live by; family values, patriotism, faith, and dedication. As Miss Rodeo South Dakota, she would do her best to share those values and encourage others to pursue their passion while promoting rodeo — South Dakota’s No. 1 sport.

Mikayla Sich From Brookings, Mikayla Sich is the 22-year-old daughter of Kevin and Molly Sich. She is currently a student at South Dakota State University studying journalism with an emphasis on broadcasting, and minoring in animal science and ag. business. Mikayla hopes of one day working for Professional Rodeo Cowboy’s Association in the media department.

She was a member of the University of Minnesota, Crookston Equestrian Team, UMC Rodeo Association, NACTA Horse Judging team, and SDSU Rodeo Club member.

She believes that the livestock she grew

up shaped her to be the person she is today, instilling work ethic and deep respect for livestock at a young age. She is very passionate about the healing connection a horse and a human can have which is why she volunteers at STARS therapeutic riding center. She is the current Miss Faith Stock Show 2014-15, 2014 Jackrabbit Stampede Ambassador First runner up, and 2014 Miss Congeniality Mitchell Corn Palace.

Outgoing Jr. Miss Rodeo SD Martina Loobey Hello! I am Martina Loobey, the 17-year-old daughter of Brook and Lorrie Loobey from Sturgis. This year I served as your 2014 Junior Miss Rodeo South Dakota along with our new Miss Rodeo South Dakota and best friend Kendra.

This time last year I was crowned the new queen and had no idea what the new year would bring. It began with autograph sessions, rodeo performances and visits around Belle Fourche during the Black Hills Roundup. My next stop took me to Mitchell for the Corn Palace rodeo, where I was able to see the Corn Palace for the first time and was able to ride in the parade with the new Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo queens. One of my favorite rodeos this year to represent my title was the Days of ‘76 Rodeo in Deadwood.

I got to ride in all performances by carrying flags and clearing the arena. Also on their agenda for the week was two historic parades, many autograph signings down town and helping with the Days of ‘76 queen contest. Right before the Sturgis Rally kicked off I was able to go to Faith for their stock show and rodeo, be in their parade and be an emcee at their queen contest. Their committee let me do a 50/50 raffle to help with the expenses of my trip to Florida coming up that next year. Having gone to so many rodeos, I have made a lot of friends. Some of those same friends invited me to attend the Range Days Rodeo during the Central States Fair in late August. I owe a big thank you to those who provided me a horse during that weekend. I had the distinct pleasure of carrying Ole Glory at their ranch rodeo while their National Anthem singer was on a horse next to me as well. Not only did I attend some of the bigger rodeos but also the small towns and their rodeos. Newell Labor Day rodeo will always hold a special place in my heart, not only was I able to ride in the parade

and help with grand entry, I got to enter their barrel racing that evening. Melynda Sletten, our 2014 Miss Rodeo South Dakota had me set for the SDRA finals, PRS finals and the First Chance Bonanza rodeo in Brookings. I helped her with her fundraising for the Miss Rodeo America pageant and carried flags and even helped the rodeo clown JJ Harrison with his act by handing out prizes. Right after the NFR, I was got to attend the Days of ‘76 Christmas Ball. They had amazing food, a silent auction, and I was able to speak to the crowd to educate them about what rodeo queens do. Later that night I showed my mad boot scootin' skills with one of the main musicians that night.

It was not long after that when I had to start preparing for the Black Hills Stock Show and my rodeo queen corral.

I had 30 girls show up to sign autographs and help with the world's smallest rodeo and it was said that they had never had so many queens show up before.

I made new friends that day and encouraged the other queens to watch the rodeo performances that night.

My days were full of autograph signings, the girls in spurs fashion show, banquets and the rodeo performances. At the end of February I had the amazing opportunity to go to Florida for the teen weekend that the Miss Rodeo Florida Inc. hosts every year. There were 15 girls there all from different states. We had the chance to go to Disney World, attend two PRCA performances, go to the zoo and an airboat ride. I have some of the best friends from 15 different states! The last rodeos I attended were the Sturgis Wild West Days and the Crazy Horse Stampede. None of this would have been possible without my parents, and my amazing coordinator Cindy. I wish all of the contestants good luck because this title is definitely a ride of a lifetime. Welcome to the 96th annual Black Hills Roundup!

Outgoing Miss Rodeo SD Kendra Peterson Welcome to the Black Hills Roundup! For most people, the Fourth of July is full of excitement and fireworks, and for myself it was just that.

After the Miss Rodeo South Dakota coronation was all said and done, I rode out of the Roundup Arena as the new Miss Rodeo South Dakota Lady in Waiting. After it sank in that I was not still sleeping in my comfy bed at our wonderful host home having an amazing dream, I knew I was in for the ride of a lifetime!

My year as Miss Rodeo South Dakota started off in true Northeast South Dakota style with bitter cold, snowy weather as we filled the Nelson Community Center in Peever for coronation. The amount of support from family and friends was truly humbling and the night was a definite success.

Not long after coronation, I hit the road and have not slowed down since!

My journey has taken me to Colorado, Florida, North Dakota, back to Florida, Minnesota, Oklahoma, Kansas, back to North Dakota, Nebraska, and of course all of our wonderful South Dakota rodeos in between. I would have never imagined that I would be literally traveling the country, say nothing about driving my car all over the country.

This is truly a once in a lifetime experience, and I would not be able to do it without my family.

I would like to take this time to first thank my mom for always being there, keeping my clothes washed so I’m ready to hit the road again, and being that calming voice telling me to keep smiling when I’m away at a rodeo and things just are not going right. Also, a big thank you to my dad and brother for being behind the scenes and keeping me humble, but at the same time

always being in my corner.

To the parents and family members: Relax. It will all be OK, no one has a perfect pageant — it is how you deal with the bumps in the road. So sit back and be the best cheerleaders you can possibly be for all the girls because that is what they need in life.

Junior Miss Rodeo SD Contestants

Bailey Grace Bosworth

White Lake is the hometown for 14-year-old Bailey Grace Bosworth who will be a freshman next school year.

Bailey is currently the reigning 2014 Mitchell Corn Palace Stampede Jr. Queen. She has held several other titles in the past.

Bailey loves living life to its fullest and has a wide variety of interests. Her school activities include volleyball, cross country, oral interp., basketball, track, theater, math club, band, and vocal music. Out of school, Bailey loves to play piano. She volunteers her spare time providing accompaniment to soloists and at church, entertaining at the nursing home, and at the community dinner theater. Bailey also sews, crafts, reads, gardens, and helps her family care for foster children and around the farm.

Rodeo has been an important part of Bailey’s life ever since she can remember. She competes in barrels, poles, and goat tying in both junior high and 4-H rodeo, where she has qualified for state in all of her events in past years. Bailey always looks for opportunities to promote her favorite sport – rodeo.

Tyler Faythe Hintz Tyler Faythe Hintz is the 15-year-old daughter of Tom and Marty Peterson of Aberdeen, S.D., where she is currently entering her sophomore year at Aberdeen Central High School.

Tyler is a South Dakota grown cowgirl that enjoys spending her time outside on the back of a horse, either going down the rodeo road, or just spending time putting some miles on her horses and honing her horsemanship skills. Tyler is also very family oriented and loves spending time helping her mom and dad out around the house whenever she can, or just taking the time to help coach her younger sisters, Tobi, 10, and Tara, 4, with their horsemanship skills.

Tyler is an active member of the Dakota Variety 4-H Club. In 2014 she earned the honor of being High Point Junior all-around horse champion. She is also a member of the NBHA, NWBRA, South Dakota High School Rodeo Association and the Sitting Bull College Youth Rodeo Association, where in 2014 she was the finals pole bending and goat tying champion.

In August 2014, Tyler received the honor of capturing the title of Jr. Miss Rodeo Aberdeen, where she also won the categories of horsemanship, speech and appearance. Tyler would like to take a moment to thank her sponsors, Tom and Marty Peterson (a.k.a.

Dad and Mom), for all of their hard work and dedication in helping her achieve her goals.

Victoria Hagg Victoria Hagg is the 18-year-old daughter of Kent and Karin Hagg of Rapid City.

She is a graduate of Stevens High School and will be attending the University of South Dakota in the fall to pursue a degree in medical sciences.

This will bring her a step closer to her goal of becoming a physician’s assistant in dermatology. Victoria’s high school activities included track, volleyball, cheerleading, and choir.

Victoria is the 2014 Boss Cowman Rodeo Queen. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Shamrock Riders 4-H club, and Horsin’ Around Club.

Victoria is an avid volunteer for many organizations including Teen Court, Somerset Court Assisted Living, and at Outdoor Campus West. Her love of animals is often at the center of her activities; from showing horses, agility training her dog, or even rescuing kittens on the side of the road.

In her free time Victoria enjoys backpacking, hiking, camping, snowboarding, or anything that keeps her outdoors!

Chad Nicholson to announce the Black Hills Roundup 14th year in a row Pioneer staff reports

Chad Nicholson said he looks forward to coming to Belle Fourche every year for the Black Hills Roundup — and he’s excited to have the opportunity to keep coming back. This will be the 14th year Nicholson has been the official PRCA rodeo announcer for the event and his overall goal is to make sure that everyone has a good time.

“We want people to have fun and get their money’s worth,” he said. “I want people to laugh out loud and truly enjoy themselves, and if that occurs I know I’m doing my job.”

In its 96th year, the Black Hills Roundup takes place around the Fourth of July in Belle Fourche.

Nicholson, who is no stranger to rodeo, has been an announcer with the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) for 23 years and he pours his heart and soul into what he does. For him, rodeo is a lifestyle that he fell in love with decades ago.

“I wanted to be a part of something,” Nicholson, said.

“I had to figure out where I fit and being an announcer is where I landed.”

Nicholson said he originally went to college to become an agriculture teacher. After he realized how much he loved the radio and traveling around the country, he knew that he needed to put everything he had into becoming the best rodeo announcer in the circuit. So, after college he sold everything but his saddle and hit the road.

“I traveled throughout the United States and booked every single rodeo that I could,” Nicholson said. “To me, being a rodeo announcer isn’t just about being around the rodeo, it’s about living the lifestyle,” he said.

He said there are numerous aspects of his job that he loves, especially when it comes to entertaining a live audience.

“It gives you instant gratification and it definitely boosts my ego,” Nicholson said.

Hailing from Three Rivers, Calif., Nicholson spends the season traveling throughout the United States — but his favorite rodeo of all time is the Black Hills Roundup.

“Belle Fourche is the best place to be on the Fourth of July,” Nicholson said. “It’s a fantastic community filled with people who take pride in their country, and I’ve made a lot of friends over the years that I can’t wait to see.”

He also said he appreciates the Black Hills Roundup Committee and the numerous volunteers and sponsors who make the rodeo a reality each and every year.

He said this rodeo has a rich history and he’s proud to have the opportunity to be a part of history in the making.

“It takes team work to make the dream work and there is definitely a lot of that involved in the Black Hills Roundup … it takes great people to allow me to be who I want to be when I go to work and in my opinion they are the best in the country,” he said.

As for his favorite event, Nicholson loves watching the saddle bronc riders do their thing.

“I’m definitely a bucking horse guy,” he said.

But, he also likes the opening ceremonies because they are so patriotic.

“I take a lot of pride in this country and what it stands for, so the opening is always a good reminder for fans to be proud of where they come from,” he said.

BULL RIDING

BAREBACK RIDING

After bull riders secure a good grip on the braided rope, he nods to signal he is ready. The bucking chute is opened and the bull storms out into the arena.

The ride is scored from 0–100 points. Both the rider and the bull are awarded points. There are usually two judges, each judge scoring the bull from 0–50 points, and the rider from 0–50 points. The combined point totals from both judges make up the final score for the ride.

STEER WRESTLING The steer wrestler, or bulldogger, starts on horseback in a box. The steer gets a head start, determined by the size of the arena. When the steer reaches that point, the bulldogger takes off in pursuit using a “hazer.” When the cowboy reaches the steer, he slides down and off his horse, hooks his arm around the steer’s horns and uses strength and leverage to place the steer is on its side with all four feet pointing the same direction.

Bareback riders stay aboard their horse, using a rigging made of leather and rawhide. The rigging, which resembles a suitcase handle on a strap, is placed atop the horse’s withers and secured with a cinch. As the bronc bursts from the chute, the rider must have both spurs touching the horse’s shoulders until the horse’s feet hit the ground and then stay aboard for eight seconds.

Bullriders use spurs to help hold on to the bucking bull.

A steer roper must rope a steer about its horns and position the rope slack over the animal’s right hip and angle his horse to the left for leverage, bringing the steer to the ground. When the steer is lying on its side and the rope is taut, the cowboy must dismount his horse and tie any three of the of the steer’s legs. The steer must remain tied for six seconds

SADDLE BRONC RIDING Saddle bronc riders have only a thick rein attached to his horse’s halter. Using one hand, the cowboy tries to stay securely seated in his saddle. If he touches any part of the horse or his own body with his free hand, he is disqualified.

TEAM ROPING Like steer wrestling, the steer gets a head start. The header throws his rope around the horns or head of the steer first and then the healer ropes the steer’s hind feet. Time stops when there is no slack in the ropes and the two horses face each other. A five-second penalty is assesed if only one hind foot is roped.

Judges score the horse’s bucking action, the cowboy’s control of the horse and the cowboy’s spurring action.

TIE-DOWN ROPING When the roper finishes tying the calf, he throws his hands in the air as a signal that the run is completed. The roper then remounts his horse, rides forward to create slack in the rope and waits six seconds to see if the calf remains tied.

The calf receives a head start that is determined by the length of the arena.

When the calf reaches its advantage point, the barrier is released. If the roper breaks the barrier before the calf reaches its head start, the cowboy is assessed a 10-second penalty.

STEER ROPING

A cowboy’s success in tie-down roping depends on the precise teamwork with his horse.

Saddle bronc riders, must mark out their horses on the first jump from the chute.

To properly mark out his horse, the saddle bronc rider must have both heels touching the animal above the point of its shoulders when it makes its first jump from the chute.

If the rider misses his mark, he receives no score.

BARREL RACING In barrel racing a cowgirl and her horse race against the clock. Horse and rider enters the arena at full speed and race around three barrels positioned in a clover pattern, then race back to the finish line. The fastest time among all the competitors is the winner, and times are recorded in 1/100 of a second. Racers are penalized five seconds for each barrel knocked over during the run.

‘Stars of Rodeo Unite’ returning to Roundup

A group of longtime rodeo contestants will gather on stage to share stories with fans.

That serves as the backdrop for the fourth annual “Stars of Rodeo Unite” session. This year’s event is set for 4:30 p.m. Saturday July 4, behind the Black Hills Roundup’s main grandstand.

The beer garden and concession stand will be open during that time.

“Everyone really enjoyed it,” event

organizer and four-time world champion bareback rider Marvin Garrett said in recalling previous events. “It was a down-home, country good time.”

Black Hills Roundup committee member Mark Leverington said organizing this year’s lineup is a work in progress.

“We are not ready to release the names of who will be there,” Leverington said. “But we hope to have at least one Hall of Fame rodeo cowboy and another one who is about to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.”

Leverington said the committee is working on this event very hard.

Dana Dental/Eagle Country Showdown

A can’t miss at this year’s Roundup

Forget American Idol and the Voice. The Black Hills Roundup has something even better — the ever-popular Country Music Showdown.

Following a successful last few years, the annual Dana Dental/Eagle Country Showdown is now celebrating its seventh local birthday during the Black Hills Roundup. The local finals, held every year at the Herrmann Park Band Shell in Belle Fourche, will start this year at noon Friday, July 3.

Contestants make it to the finals by placing in the top two preliminary rounds held at various venues throughout the Black Hills. This year for the first time, two finalists will be chosen from online audition tape/mp3/video entries.

Our local Eagle Country winner will receive $400 cash courtesy of Dana Dental Arts in Spearfish and Rapid City. Plus a $100 gift certificate from Pete's Clothing in Belle Fourche and other prizes will be given out for all contestants courtesy of Mason's 5th Ave. in Belle Fourche.

North and South Dakota run a joint state competition each year in August at Beach, N.D., during the Spirit of the West Celebration.

This year’s showdown will feature 10 finalists from previous rounds who will

face-off for the right to move on to the joint state competition.

The winner of that competition will receive $1,000 cash then move on to the regional competition usually held in November in Minnesota. From there one winner will move to the national finals in Nashville, Tennessee, with a chance to win the grand prize of $100,000.

Past contestants have included Leann Rimes, Garth Brooks, Sara Evans, Brad Paisley and more.

The country showdown is the longest and largest running country music talent search in the nation and is in its 34th year and still going strong. During the seven years Eagle Country has hosted the showdown, four state champions have been produced.

“It’s an honor each year to be included with the festivities at the Black Hills Roundup. We are very happy to be able to provide a free family friendly segment of entertainment that makes the whole Fourth of July experience in Belle Fourche a little more complete,” said Paul James the morning Show Host and chief organizer of the Showdown for Eagle Country said. “Judging by the crowd that show’s up each year, the people really like it as well,” James added.
