Spearfish Canyon Golf Club

SPEARFISH — The Spearfish Canyon Golf Course has served as the Northern Hills’ first 18-hole golf course since its most recent expansion in 1988.

The entrance is on the turnoff into Spearfish Canyon, just off of Colorado Boulevard.

Ponderosa pine, oak, and Black Hills spruce trees surround the par-35 front nine, which measures 3,128 yards off the longest tees. Push-up greens are small.

The front nine opened shortly after the country club was established in 1921.

Distances from the longest tees go to 561 yards off the par-5 ninth hole.

Rolling hills and large greens are featured on the back nine. This par-36 section measures 3,529 yards from the longest tees.

Back-nine distances from the longest tees range from 187 yards on the par-3 eleventh hole to 564 yards off the par-5, 12th hole.

Number 8 is regarded as the course’s signature hole because of the scenery.

The 183-yard, par-3 hole includes a prominent view of Spearfish Canyon.

Kortan pointed to the 18-hole course as an asset and cited other factors.

“We have an excellent level of service,” he said. “We treat our customers with gratitude and respect.”

“Course conditions have drawn praise from many golfers,” Kortan said.

He added, practice ranges and greens are offered, along with club fitting, lessons, and a fully stocked pro shop.

Guest fees from Monday through Thursday during open-twilight hours are $69 for 18 holes with cart, $48 for 18 holes without cart, $39 for nine holes with

cart, and $27 for nine holes without cart.

Twilight rates (beginning about three hours before dark) are $39 for 18 holes with cart, $27 for 18 holes without cart, $34 for nine holes with cart, and $22 for nine holes without cart.

All of the rates include tax.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and holiday guest rates during open-twilight hours are $74 for 18 holes with cart, $52 for 18 holes without cart, $41 for nine holes with cart, and $30 for nine holes without cart.

Twilight rates are $39 for 18 holes with cart, $27 for 18 holes without cart, $39 for nine holes with cart, and $27 for nine holes without cart. Tax is included in all rates.

Wall Community Golf Course feels inviting

WALL — Golfers seeking a relatively flat course will find what they are looking for at Wall Community Golf Course.

This nine-hole course was built in 2002. It measures 3,861 yards from the back tees and is a par 36. Some minor hills are also part of the layout.

“It’s a typical nine-hole, small-town course,” treasurer Stan Anderson said.

“It also has a nice clubhouse and deck that can be used for many different functions.”

Anderson said the course features a pair of nice par 3’s.

“They are achievable to get on, and it is a nice playing field,” he said.

The course also offers a putting green and driving range.

Some club rentals are available.

Cart rentals and dining facilities are offered.

The full-service dining facilities are open daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch.

Plans for later in the summer call for the facilities to be open for some Friday and Saturday suppers.

Daily rates are $25 plus tax for nine holes and include cart rental.

Tee times are not necessary.

However, golfers must check in before playing the course.

The course is located at 1801 Golf Course Road in Wall.

“We’re only about 50 miles from Rapid City, which makes for a nice drive on I-90,” Anderson said.

Tips on getting the most out of your hybrid You want to get the most out of your hybrid.

In the late 1990s, hybrid clubs were introduced to promote higher and more accurate shots.

While certain circumstances are best left to a traditional iron, a hybrid certainly has its place in every golf bag.

Like regular irons, hybrid clubs are numbered to signify the distance it can carry a ball.

While the true number will vary from golfers with different experience levels, the LPGA estimates these numbers for the ranges each one can achieve.

— 3-hybrid: men, 170-220 yards; women, 125-180.

— 4-hybrid: men, 160-210 yards; women: 120-170.

— 5-hybrid: men, 150-200 yards; women, 115-160.

The Professional Golf Association suggests a hybrid club will move a ball about 5 to 8 yards farther than a regular iron. While that might seem like a small number, it can make the difference in setting up a perfect putt or chip shot.

Improve accuracy The larger head on a hybrid club gives golfers more room for error, helping im-

prove accuracy if the shot is a little off.

While taking shots from the fairway, casual golfers will find it easier to set themselves up for success.

For the best accuracy, it’s important to use your iron stance rather than how you would swing with a wood.

Set up with the ball in mid stance and swing down toward the ball, making a divot just beyond its position.

Hybrid-tee shots should be set up lower than usual. Make sure to leave no more than a quarter of the ball above the club’s head level.

When teeing off, use the same swing

as one with a fairway wood — level and sweeping, not the up-swinging motion used with a driver.

Hybrid vs. Iron situations Since a hybrid club provides a deeper center of gravity, they make it much easier to send a ball high in the air with little spin.

You’ll see the most success when using these as approach shots when you are in reach of the green.

Traditional irons keep the trajectory low, which gives your ball a chance to travel further once it lands.

They are ideal for second shots on a par 5 when you need the extra help.

Elkhorn Ridge golf course offers golfers views

SPEARFISH — Elkhorn Ridge Golf Course is in its second season as an 18-hole facility.

The original nine holes, clubhouse, and practice facility were completed in 2009.

Holes span total distances of 2,276 yards from the shortest tees to 3,655 yards off the longest tees while offering views of the Centennial Valley.

A nine-hole expansion project was completed in August 2016.

Distances span 2,382 yards off the shortest tees to 3,545 yards from the longest tees.

“Our property speaks for itself,” head golf professional Mike Mendelson said. “The beauty of the place lends itself to being a place where you want to play.”

Mendelson said the back nine is spectacular, and the entire course fits well into the environment. As for improvements, the land area for the 10th hole has been widened.

Views include Polo Canyon, which is most prominent on the signature holes: 12 through 14.

Hole number 12 is South Dakota’s longest par-5. Distances range from 421 yards off the shortest tee to 606 yards from the longest tee.

Also in the canyon, a par-3 13th hole ranges from 106 yards off the shortest tee to 182 yards off the longest tee. The 14th hole is a par-5 measuring 415 yards off the shortest tee and 510 yards from the longest tee.

Every green in the canyon features a limestone backdrop behind it.

This is Mendelson’s first year as head pro here, and things will remain as they have been. “For this year, I’m learning the facility. I would like to offer great customer service,” he said.

Mendelson has served as head professional in Grand Junction, Colo., and has worked in the golf industry since 1995.

“Not many clubs are investing in property like Elkhorn is,” Mendelson said. He added customer

service and the area’s natural beauty are keys to the facility’s success.

Golf course architect Patrick Wyss served as lead architect for the course’s first nine holes. Expansion construction started in 2014, with Wyss Associates designing the new portion.

All 18 holes boast five different tee distances. They also help golfers choose a tee based on their ability.

Practice facilities feature the region’s only double-ended driving range. Tee areas, target greens, and a greenside practice bunker are also included.

The clubhouse offers a full-service golf shop, plus food and beverage services. Expansion of the cart barn and parking lot were completed in 2016.

Green fees are $45 plus tax for nine holes including cart, and $73 plus tax for 18 holes including cart.

Twilight fees of $54 plus tax allow a golfer to play up to 18 holes starting 3 ½ hours before sunset.

A Junior Rate of $17 allows younger golfers to play after 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday only.

Mendelson said Elkhorn Ridge will offer a junior golf program on Thursdays starting June 7, except for July 4. Gabe Dirksen serves as the assistant pro.

“Instruction is a core philosophy of ours,” Mendelson said. He added better golfers will play more, and the goal is to make people comfortable.

The course will host a local drive, chip, and putt qualifier on June 4.

This is similar to football’s punt, pass and Kick competition.

Golferskat Elkhorn Ridge are expected to wear proper clothing. This includes collared shirts and sleeves for men, and collared shirts or blouses for women. Slacks or golf shorts are preferred, with golf shoes or golf sandals to have soft spikes.

Men’s Day is scheduled for every Tuesday starting in May, with Ladies’ Day set for Thursday.

Business hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. all other days of the week.

Sundance Country Club challenges golfers

SUNDANCE, Wyo. — The Sundance Country Club Golf Course offers many challenges to golfers.

The nine-hole, par-35 course features 2,915 yards of golf.

“It’s a fun little course,” manager Trudy Durfee said. “The course is now in really good shape for starting out.”

This course may be walked and includes some elevation changes. It is not really long but offers plenty of challenge, which makes it a great course for all ability levels.

Tee times are not required. Many golfers can play nine holes in under 1 ½ hours.

Green fees are $18 for nine holes and $25 for 18 holes. Fees for weekends and

holidays are $22 for nine holes and $33 for 18 holes.

First-time memberships are also available. Rates are $285 for single players if purchased in May or $300 if purchased in June.

Family rates are $525 if a person owns a share. This rate includes children through age 18.

The Sundance Country Club Golf Course offers a Monday special of $30 all day, including a cart.

Wednesday afternoons are men’s days, with women’s days scheduled for Thursday afternoons. No tee times are required.

Tips to improve your golf game Here are some more tips to help you imrove you golf game.

Correcting slice while driving Your first shot from the tee box can set the pace for your entire game. If you can’t position yourself for success during your initial drive, it will cost you swings that affect your overall score.

According to Golf Digest, about 90 percent of golfers struggle with slicing the ball.

Don’t get discouraged. It’s easy to fix.

A slice (when the ball curves right) occurs when the club mates with the side of a golf ball during the swing. This causes an abnormal spin which sends you way off course of a target.

A few major culprits that contribute to a slice include trying to overpower the ball, poor wrist rotation and an improper stance.

The next time you hit the links, remember these tips from the pros at Golf Digest to drive your ball straight – every time.

It’s all in the grip If you’re not holding your club properly, a slice is almost inevitable. Try to strengthen your grip by holding your hands away from the target, while keeping palms parallel with each other.

Analyze your position to ensure the base of your thumbs line up with the point of the right-side collar of your shirt.

It’s also important to not squeeze the club

with too much pressure, as it will keep your hands from releasing during impact.

The perfect swing Bad habits are hard to break on the golf course, especially during your initial drive.

Usually, a lesson with a professional will prove to be incredibly helpful when trying to cure a slice.

Before your lesson, become familiar with the perfect stance and swing that make balls fly straight.

Position the ball for success. A common reason for slicing occurs before you even swing. Try to move the ball further back in your stance and line it up just inside your left heel.

Fix your backswing. Keep your right elbow close to your body during the backswing. This will make your club follow the proper path on the downswing.

Time your forearm release. During every swing, there is a point when you will rotate your dominant hand, wrist and arm across your body. A slice occurs when this breaking point is timed too late. You can find your sweet spot by practicing a swing and releasing your club when you feel the rotation point.

The goal is for your club to travel straight and toward the target. Make sure to practice this in a wide-open space with no people present.

Lead Country Club golf course enjoys long history

LEAD — Lead Country Club bills itself as “the highest course east of the Rockies” with an elevation of 6,200 feet.

The nine-hole, par-36 course measures 3,331 yards off the longest tees and features small, receptive greens. It is located seven miles south of Lead on Highway 85 and off Rochford Road.

Lead Country Club was built in 1922 and offers some of the region’s first class greens.

The course’s claim to fame is the first hole, which features an elevated tee. This tee box was rebuilt in 2009 after many years of being an artificial turf mat. General Manager Al Varland said a golfer needs accuracy on this hole.

“All of the holes have small greens,” Varland said. “The slope of the course makes all holes interesting.”

This course includes six par-4s. Five are in excess of 400 yards.

Improvements like elevated tees, permanent outdoor toilets, and paved parking lot have occurred over the last six years.

The club is currently remodeling the clubhouse, located in a building that was erected in 1923. Varland said that effort started upstairs in an old meeting room.

The exterior of the clubhouse was renovated last year. Varland said the locker room is the next target for renovation, but they will be functional for this year.

A full bar and remodeled banquet room are also available.

Golf cart rentals are available on the site, which also features a driving range. A small kitchen is located inside the clubhouse, with dinner specials each Wednesday.

Men’s Day is held every Wednesday from 11 a.m. to close.

Nine-hole rates are $35 per person with cart and $25 without cart. The 18-hole rates are $50 per person with cart and $35 without cart.

What would entice a golfer to give Lead Country Club a try?

“Our course is the oldest in the Black Hills,” Varland said. “It is also one of the Black Hills’ more challenging courses.”

Here are some basics for beginners

You must learn the basics if you want to succeed at golf. Photo by © Adobe Stock While spectating on television or in person, it’s easy to get the impression that it’s easy to excel at golf.

The professionals you watch drive the ball with swings that look effortless, sink holes with long-distance putts and overcome hazards with ease. In reality, each shot has been refined by years of mistakes, overcoming obstacles and dedicated practice.

Golf is not a game you can just jump in to and expect to succeed.

What’s in your bag?

You can spend a small fortune on a quality set of clubs, but without understanding how to use them, their promise will go unrealized. When you’re just getting started, it’s best to keep it simple. Invest in an affordable set and make learning the priority, not buying the latest and greatest.

Professional rules state that golfers can carry up to 14 clubs in their bags. However, as a beginner, there are only a few types of equipment you will really need.

Make sure to pack a driver, putter, sand wedge, fairway wood, a few irons and the ever-important pitching wedge. These clubs are most forgiving to an amateur swing while providing the most air.

Lessons matter Sure, while golfing with a group of seasoned veterans, they will be willing to give you advice as you get started.

The problem with this is each one might have a different swing or style that works for them. The best way to learn is by taking lessons from a PGA-accredited instructor.

Once you learn the basics, it will be easier to tweak your game to find what works best for you.

Practice makes perfect Even if you can’t find the time to practice at the golf course, you can always work on your swing in your own backyard. Your neighbors might not appreciate you driving balls if you live in a busy community, but you should still perfect your stance with ghost swings.

There also are great tools to use while practicing at home. Invest in a chipping net to get a feel for your short game or create a small putting green with slopes and other obstacles you struggle with on the course.

In due time, you will be a hero on the course, giving advice to those just beginning.

There are health benefits playing golf You may underestimate the amazing health benefits you gain every time you step out on the links. From improving your state of mind to increasing your physical fitness, a day on the course provides advantages for your overall health.

According to the American Heart Association, walking briskly can lower your risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

A recent study reported by the World Golf Foundation shows that walking three 18hole rounds per week will provide enough exercise for weight maintenance for all ages.

Playing 18 holes and riding in a cart will account for 1,300 calories burned, whereas

walking the same 18 holes and carrying your clubs will burn an average of 2,000 calories.

The National Institutes of Health states there is limited evidence related to golf and mental health. However, it does report that the physical activity required has a direct effect on mental well-being.

According to the American Psychological Association, exercise is not only beneficial to short-term mental health; research has shown that it can even alleviate long-term depression.

It also is tied to improving issues such as high-blood pressure, diabetes and arthritis.

This is largely due to pleasant endorphins being released throughout your body while you’re active.

Tomahawk Lake CC preserves past

LEAD — Tomahawk Lake Country Club continues visiting the past while looking forward.

“Over the past several years, we’ve been looking to restore the course to its original design,” board president Mark Speirs said.

The course is a National Historic Facility and starting its 82nd year of operations.

Current efforts include restoring first-hole sand traps to their original location. Those were filled in; current sand traps on that hole were created 20 to 25 years ago.

Tomahawk Lake offers scenery and his-

tory for golfers of all ages and is located seven miles south of Deadwood just off of Highway 385. The nine-hole, par-36 course spans 3,390 yards off the longest tees.

Open meadows and pine trees dominate the course, which sets about one mile above sea level in the Black Hills National Forest.

A 10-acre practice area enables golfers to warm up before going on the course.

Speirs said the last two years have been excellent for the club. He added revenues reached an all-time high and credited superintendent Gary Outka for his efforts in helping the course look as good as it ever has.

Outka took over as course superinten-

dent in 2016 and started at Rapid City’s Arrowhead Country Club in 1971.

“We have good membership, and people really enjoy coming here to play,” Speirs said. He credited the tourists who keep returning to play the course and added they contribute to a great customer base.

Speirs agreed the scenery and course contribute a lot to that success.

Scenery includes a pair of kingfishers nesting along the pond. Speirs said the course also provides great bird watching.

A new tee box was installed on the sixth hole last year.

Bryan Guischer is the club’s new man-

ager. He boasts 20 years of experience as a professional, and Speirs said Guischer will bring a very professional attitude.

Guischer works with the Lead-Deadwood high school teams and will also spearhead the junior golf program. Interested individuals may call Guischer at 578-2080.

The clubhouse features a full bar and menu, restaurant facilities, deck, and seating area. A deck overlooks the first and ninth holes.

A fully-stocked pro shop provides merchandise, clubs, and new golf balls. Cart storage and two private locker rooms are included.

Designed by renowned golf course architect Lawrence Hughes in the mid 1930’s, Tomahawk Lake Country Club is a picturesque nine-hole, par 36 course located just seven miles south of Historic Deadwood, South Dakota.

From narrow fairways lined by tall pine trees to dramatic elevation changes from tee box to green, all 3,390 yards meanders through the Black Hills National Forest to provide a challenging course.
