Finding a Financial Advisor
he financial industry has changed over the last half decade, and middle class men and women looking to grow their money have no doubt experienced that change firsthand. Unlike in years past when large financial firms welcomed middle class investors with open arms, many firms now take no such approach, offering little to no incentives to their own brokers for accounts that are not in excess of half a million dollars or more. Much of this shift can be traced to heightened scrutiny of the financial industry in response to the economic downturn that began in 2008. More regulations and higher costs have made it less cost-effective for financial firms to cater to middle class investors, many of whom are in the dark about the best ways to grow their money. But even though the industry has changed, men and women can still find financial advisors who can help them plan their financial futures.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Arguably the best way to find a financial advisor is to seek recommendations from family and friends, ideally those in similar financial shape as you. Though larger firms may prefer to ignore middle class investors, some firms make a point of catering to this oft-underserved market. When asking friends and family for recommendations, try to determine if any of the people you speak with have their own broker or simply speak with customer representatives when issues arises. Companies that provide you with your own broker may be easier to work with and more likely to listen to your concerns than those that do not assign you your own broker.

When on the lookout for a financial advisor, inquire about the fees you would have to pay if you chose a particular firm. Annual fees typically hover around 1 percent, but some firms willing to take smaller investors may charge nearly

If you’re risk averse, then you likely won’t be comfortable working with a financial planner whose approach is aggressive. Likewise, if your goal is to make as much money as possible and you don’t mind taking risks, then a more conservative planner likely won’t be able to yield the types of results you’re looking for. Upon looking for a financial advisor, smaller investors may no longer find an industry that’s waiting to welcome them with open arms. Long-Term Care Insurance
N
o one likes to think they’ll need long-term care. After all, it’s natural for adults to want to remain independent, living in their own home as long as possible.
Statistically, though, people over age 65 are very likely to spend some time in a nursing home before the end of their life. It’s a common need.
WHO NEEDS IT?
Let’s start with who doesn’t need longterm care insurance. People who are very wealthy don’t necessarily need long-term care insurance because they have enough money to insure themselves. They can pay for their own nursing home care and still have plenty left to leave to their children as an inheritance. And likewise, the very poor don’t necessarily need long-term care insurance because Medicare will cover their nursing home costs in old age. A good insurance policy can give you more options, though. Where a long-term care policy makes the most sense is really for people in the middle bracket: those who have saved a nest egg for retirement and don’t want to see their hard-earned savings disappear in the event they require long-term health care in a nursing home.

Staying in a nursing home can easily cost thousands of dollars per month. For many people, it’s expensive enough to burn through their retirement savings within just a few years. If you want to leave an inheritance for your children or charities, or if you want to protect your savings in case you’re able to live independently again, it makes sense to try to protect them with an insurance policy.
WHAT TO KNOW
When shopping for long-term care insurance, you need to know the dollar amounts covered, what type of care is included, and for what period of time. It’s a good idea to shop early — some experts recommend around age 55 — to get the best rates. Later in life, when you’re more likely to need imminent nursing-home care, it can be impossible or very expensive to get this coverage. You should also know any time
limits on coverage. Some policies have a maximum number of years they will cover, and most are not indexed to inflation. You should buy a policy expecting that health-care costs will rise faster than inflation, which is what they have done in recent years. In the end, if you find a solid policy with reasonable premiums and coverage, it can provide a lot of peace of mind for protecting your assets and taking care of your medical needs that arise over time.

state planning doesn’t solely cover your financial savings or home. It can also include your property and land.
And in no other industry is land more valuable than farming. By building and implementing an airtight estate plan, farmers and ranchers can ensure a smooth transition of land ownership and management when the time comes. An estate plan can provide for the needs of all family members, even those who aren’t actively engaged in its daily functions. It also can help mitigate the risk of high inheritance taxes on land that is made more valuable by inflation. And because land is not a liquid asset, an estate plan is important in stemming and addressing any potential settlement problems.
IMPORTANCE
A quarter of the nation’s agricultural land is likely to change hands in the next decade, according to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service. Making sure that land remains productive and valuable is a critical goal that can be achieved with an effective estate plan. A good estate plan can help accomplish at least four goals, spelled out by the NRCS: • Transfer ownership and management of the agricultural operation, land and other assets to a new operator; • Avoid unnecessary transfer taxes (income, gift and estate) • Ensure financial security and peace of mind for all generations; and • Develop the next generation’s management capacity
WHO CAN HELP?
One organization under the NRCS is the American Farmland Trust. The organization serves agricultural landowners, concerned citizens, planners, local officials, state agency staff, land trusts and policymakers by answering complex questions on topics ranging from farmland protection options to conservation programs. You can find more about the NRCS and its trust at www. farmlandinfo.org. The group responds to requests for information by phone, e-mail and mail and can provide statistics, review plans, easements and ordinances to help you in your land management needs. You also can reach out to a local legal expert to discuss your concerns and needs. Even if the firm isn’t an expert in the field, the attorneys likely will be able to send you to someone who is.
