fresh coat of paint on your home’s exterior can be a great way to improve your home’s curb appeal. But it’s important homeowners follow some of the same rules the pros adhere to when painting the exteriors of their homes. A fresh coat of paint on a home’s exterior can give a property a vibrant new look. Whether you decide to go with a bold new color or repaint a house in an existing color, new paint can add some life to the exterior of your home. Summer has long been considered the ideal season to paint home exteriors, but advancements in technology have made it easier to paint home exteriors later in the year. According to paint manufacturer Sherwin-Williams, traditional latex-based paints need temperatures above 60 F to cure properly. Sherwin-Williams also notes that one of the more common mistakes homeowners make when painting their homes’ exteriors is to paint during times of the year when temperatures fluctuate greatly between the days and nights. When nighttime temperatures dip considerably lower than they were in the afternoon, dew will form and the paint can stop coalescing. When that happens, moisture gets into the uncured paint and surface staining and adhesion problems may result. So even if the temperature is a comfortable 60 F during the day, homeowners should avoid painting if the nighttime temperatures figure to drop considerably. In addition to choosing the right time of year to paint, consider the following painting pointers to ensure your home’s exterior gets the fresh look you are aiming for. • Monitor weather reports. The Garden Shed
as your backyard shed become an eyesore? Are rusty metal or rotting wood the first things you notice when you head in for the mower?
Then it’s time to spend some time rejuvenating it this fall. With less than $100 and a creative eye, you can overhaul your favorite outdoor space into one you can be proud of. Grab some paint and get ready to put in some elbow grease. You’ll be showing off your shed makeover to anyone who comes for a visit.
ADD PAINT
Sometimes an outdated shed that has seen better days simply needs paint. Special metal paints can even cover up rusty areas that immediately draw your attention. Choose the color you’d like your shed to be and head down to the local hardware store. Opt for tough exterior paint that can stand up to the elements, and don’t forget a separate color for the trim work. Royal blue or dark gray is complemented wonderfully by pops of white
door and window trim. Consider matching your home’s colors, too. If you recently re-sided your home with a new color, it may be time to make your outdoor structures such as garden sheds and barns match.
FOCUS ON THE INSIDE
Once the outside is swell, it’s time to make sure you actually want to go into the shed. Incorporate shelving and smaller storage units to allow for more space. Hang your weed trimmer from the studs of the wall and organize your gas, oil and weed killer containers to free up floor space. While painting the inside of your shed probably doesn’t make much sense, reinforcing it against the extreme hot and cold temperatures does. Add some standard insulation between the
studs. Staple a plastic liner to the studs and enjoy a shed that’s cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter months.
LANDSCAPE INTEGRATION
Pre-fabricated sheds are more popular than ever. You can buy them with wraparound porches, large interior space and even lofts. With some insulation and a power source, they can even serve as guest houses. You can make them look even better by adding landscaping around them to make them look like part of your yard. If your storage unit doesn’t come with a deck, build a 6-inch platform. Add mulched flower beds around the edges of the shed to serve as bright, beautiful borders. The more you treat your shed like an extension of your home, the better it will look in your yard.

Preparing for Winter
nother long mowing and landscaping season is almost in the books but that doesn’t mean your work is over. In fact, the key to a healthy year-round yard is in how you care for it during the fall and winter months. Ignoring your lawn when the temperatures change can mean even more work for you when the springtime rolls around again. So get ahead of the game now to help yourself in the long run.
CREATE A COMPOST PILE
The fall season is an excellent time to start your own compost pile and can help you put your yard waste to good use. Start a pile of green leaves, clippings and non-meat kitchen scraps close to your garden. Add a second layer of brown material such as garden soil, leaves and coffee grounds before adding another layer of greens. Finally, add some garden soil to the top and turn it throughout the season. You’ll end up with a rich, black pile of fertilizer for next year’s garden.
MOW & RAKE
Even when the cool air enters your neck of the woods, it’s still necessary
to continue mowing your yard. If your grass is still growing, you should still be mowing. Raking and lawn sweeping your yard after you mow is necessary to prevent sun deprivation from impacting your yard. By neglecting the areas of your lawn with built-up grass on top, you’re ensuring you’ll end up with unattractive brown spots peppered throughout. Keep the clippings in check by raking and removing your grass after every mow. This not only helps your lawn look great but prevents overworking your mower.
TEND YOUR GARDEN
You may think your gardening is done once you pull the last carrot or onion form the ground, but your garden needs regular maintenance just like the rest of your yard. Remove any damaged annuals and clear out debris from flower beds. This freshens up the appearance of your garden and helps prevent mildew and mold from taking over.

Protect Pipes from Cold
F
reezing pipes in the wintertimes can be costly and dangerous to homeowners. What you do now in the fall can help avoid this problem. The expansion of water when it freezes can put tremendous pressure on the pipes under your home, causing them to break. Pipes that freeze are frequently the ones exposed to severe cold, such as outdoor hose bibs and swimming pool supply lines. Pipes that run against exterior walls that contain little or no insulation also are subject to freezing, so it’s important to know how your water lines are set up in your home.
WHAT YOU CAN DO
There are many steps to take both before and during cold weather to protect your
pipes from freezing. The most important thing is to have a plan in action. Know how your water lines are configured and which ones may be susceptible to damage. Consult with a local plumber to conduct a run-through of your home. A licensed professional will be able to walk you through your situation and give you tips on where you need to focus your attention. Here are some other helpful tips recommended by the American Red Cross: • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. • Open the outside hose bibs to allow
water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break. • Check around the home for water supply lines located in unheated areas. • Look in the basement, crawl space, attic, garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated. • Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes, such as a “pipe sleeve” or installing UL-listed “heat tape,” “heat cable,” or similar materials on exposed water pipes. • Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed

Get your home fall and winter ready with 5 simple projects
hen it comes to preventative maintenance, a little time and effort can save thousands in energy costs and repair bills over the lifetime of your home.
If boots, a warm hat and a tuned-up snow blower are the only items on your winter preparation list, your home maintenance plan may need a makeover. These simple home maintenance projects can help lower your energy bills, prevent more costly repairs and/or increase the lifespan of your home. 1. Heating & Ventilation — Examine your fireplace and chimney system to ensure that no soot or creosote has collected. Any cracks or voids could potentially cause a fire. Before you turn the furnace or boiler on, replace the air filter and hire a professional to inspect the unit more thoroughly. These steps will improve the efficiency and life of your furnace and will ensure stable indoor air quality. 2. Seal Windows and Doors — If not properly sealed, windows and doors can be a major culprit for heat loss. To keep the warm air inside, inspect the weather-stripping around your home’s windows and doors for leaks, rot or decay. Repair or replace structural framing, and caulk inside and out, if necessary. 3. Insulate well — One of the easiest and most effective defenses against heat loss is proper insulation. Prevent cold drafts from entering and the loss of heated air through basement headers, which, when left exposed, can make your furnace work
harder. Look for a moisture-resistant product offering high thermal performance, such as Roxul Comfortbatt insulation. This type of mineral wool insulation makes installation simple. All that’s needed is a serrated blade or bread knife. Cut the batt to fit the cavity and press into place. The insulation will help improve energy efficiency as soon as it’s in place and provide savings over the lifetime of your home. Comfortbatt can also be used to top or replace old attic insulation. Aim for an R-50 or a depth of 16 inches. 4. Backyard Care — Save your property from potential damage by trimming overgrown trees and shrubs to prevent ice-laden branches from thrashing against electrical wires and your home’s exterior. Drain/shut off any exterior faucets and sprinkler systems to prevent freezing. Ensure rain or snow drains away from the house to avoid foundation problems. 5. Roof and Gutters — Inspect your roof for shingles that are warped, damaged or even missing to prevent a future leak. Use roofing cement and a caulking gun to seal joints where water could penetrate, such as around the chimney, skylights or vent pipes. Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are securely fastened. Downspouts should extend at least five feet away from the home to prevent flooding.

But while you might not be able to change your home’s architecture to appeal to the masses, there are steps you can take to make your home more appealing to buyers whose dream home more closely resembles your own. • Address curb appeal. If trees or shrubs outside windows are blocking natural light from getting inside, consider trimming them so your home appears sunnier and more inviting. Bright homes tend to feel more spacious, so fix any light fixtures that need fixing and even add small lamps in rooms that could use some extra light. • Tackle that to-do list. It’s easy for a home’s residents to grow accustomed to certain minor problems, such as a doorknob that always sticks or a creaky kitchen cabinet door. But buyers might be turned off by too many of these minor problems and wonder if any larger and more expensive issues also went ignored. Before showing your home, address all those minor repairs on your to-do list.

Pets of the Week Harley
Harley is a young, male pit bull or pit mix. He just wants to be part of a family, and given what little we know of his past, he deserves the stability of a forever home. Harley has a few dogs he hangs out with at the shelter, so a home with another dog is a possibility. He is working on gaining weight, but despite being thin, Harley is healthy.
Milton
Milton is the last adult, toy breed that is left from the large seizure group that came to us in April. He is very antisocial with people, but is slowly getting used to a routine here. He hangs with August and September, who are mothering him and teaching him to trust humans. He needs someone with patience and understanding for his past life.
Star
Star is about 6 years old. He has the most beautiful blue eyes. He is a unique looking cat who loves to be loved. He’s part Siamese, but he’s not talkative. He’s just lovely.
