BUS INFORMATION

School buses will make the first run the morning of Aug. 23. Bus routes have been established by the School Board and by previous Transportation Committee action. Bus service is restricted to outside the three-mile limit. Parents needing to know specific information should contact Travis Ladson, Dakota Bus Service, at 642-2353. Shuttle bus service will be provided between schools.

HIGH SCHOOL ALL SPORTS MEETING

An all sports meeting will be held on Sunday, July 29 at 6:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium for parents and students involved in high school sponsored sports. Coaches of fall sports (volleyball, football, cross-country, boys’ golf, soccer, girls’ tennis and dance) will meet with students and parents following the general meeting. Student physical must be completed prior to the first practice. Bring insurance information to the fall meeting. Booster Club memberships will be available at the fall meeting. Coaches will discuss fall practice schedules. The Booster Club will host a free meal of hot dogs, chips, dessert, and water beginning at 5 p.m. followed by the whole group presentation in the auditorium at 6:30 p.m.

The school does not assume financial responsibility for accidents which may occur. Student accident insurance and dental accident insurance is available with a company offering these services. Forms for enrollment will be sent home with students the first week of school. Students involved in football must have accident insurance, either the school’s or any policy their parents may already have, before they can check in for football practice. INCLEMENT WEATHER

During storms or poor weather the general policy will be to conduct school. All bus routes may not operate. Students who miss school because of inclement weather will be allowed to make up work, per building policy. In the event of severe storms or emergencies which would require school closing, announcements will be made over local radio and TV stations as early as possible. The School Messenger parent/staff communications system will also be activated in an effort to make sure all students, families and staff members are kept informed. In extreme situations rural parents should have prior arrangements for their children to stay in town.

Cancer does not discriminate. People from all walks of life are diagnosed with cancer every day. Certain contributors, such as family history of cancer, may be beyond a person’s control. But the American Cancer Society notes that people can avoid some potential cancer contributors by making healthy choices.

Tobacco

Anti-smoking campaigns have done much to impact the number of people who smoke, but tobacco remains one of the leading causes of cancer across the globe. The ACS notes that while cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco are made from dried tobacco leaves, in order to make smoking more flavorful and pleasant, tobacco companies add various substances. As the resulting products burn, the smoke they produce is made up of thousands of chemicals, at least 70 of which are carcinogens. Some smokers may not give the smoke coming from their cigarettes much thought, but that smoke contains chemicals such as formaldehyde, lead, arsenic, and carbon monoxide. Recognizing that the smoke from their cigarettes is sending formaldehyde into their air may lead some smokers to quit for good.

Alcohol

Alcohol consumption can raise a person’s risk of getting cancer. Alcohol has been linked to cancers of the mouth,

throat, esophagus, liver, and breast, among others. The ACS notes that regular, heavy alcohol use can damage the liver and cause inflammation and scarring that might increase a person’s risk of developing liver cancer. Women who consume a few alcoholic beverages may be increasing their risk of developing breast cancer, which the ACS believes might be a byproduct of alcohol’s affect on estrogen levels in the body. Evidence suggests that the ethanol found in alcohol is what increases a person’s risk of developing cancer. All alcohol beverages contain ethanol, so drinkers should not assume that one type of alcohol is safer than another.

Diet and Sedentary Lifestyle

According to the ACS, research has shown that poor diet coupled with a sedentary lifestyle can increase a person’s risk of getting cancer. In fact, the World Cancer Research Fund estimates that roughly 20 percent of all cancer diagnoses in the United States are related to body fatness, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption, and/or poor nutrition. Men and women who can control their weight and maintain a healthy weight throughout their lives can reduce their risk of getting cancer as well as other conditions, including heart disease and diabetes.
