Cancer And The Environment
M
any things can cause cancer. Some people may be born with genetic mutations that increase their risk for certain cancers, while others make lifestyle choices, such as smoking tobacco, that make them more vulnerable. Certain environmental factors also may put people at risk of developing cancer. To understand the relationship between cancer and the environment, it helps to understand certain things about the disease.
What is a carcinogen?
Substances that are known to cause cancer are referred to as “carcinogens.” Extensive research is conducted before something is classified as a carcinogen. The American Cancer Society notes that it is unethical to test a substance by exposing human beings to it, so other types of tests, including lab tests on cell cultures and animals, are conducted to determine if something is a carcinogen. Studies in people that look at human populations and what they might have been exposed to also are conducted. However, because people are exposed to so many substances at any given time, it can be hard to connect any particular exposure to cancer.
How are carcinogens classified?
A part of the World Health Organization, the International Agency for Research on Cancer aims to identify causes of cancer. The IARC classification system, in which potential cancer-causing substances are categorized into one of five groups, is the most widely used system in the world.
Does exposure to a carcinogen guarantee I will get cancer?
Exposure to a carcinogen does not guarantee a person will get cancer. The National Cancer Institute notes that many factors influence if a person exposed to a carcinogen will get cancer. These factors include an individual’s genetic background
as well as the amount and duration of his or her exposure to the carcinogen.
Are some people more at risk due to environmental carcinogens?
Cancers caused by involuntary exposure to environmental carcinogens are more likely to affect certain people than others. Those who are at greater risk include people who work in certain industries and are exposed to certain environmental carcinogens on the job.
Are environmental carcinogens responsible for most cancers?
The NCI notes that the precise causes of most cancers are unknown, so it’s impossible to say most cancers are a byproduct of exposure to environmental carcinogens. Estimates from researchers even vary widely, with some researchers suggesting environmental carcinogens are responsible for less than 4 percent of all cancer diagnoses while others claim nearly one in five cancers can be attributed to environmental exposures.
Is there a list of environmental carcinogens?
The IARC and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ National Toxicology Program have developed lists of substances that scientific evidence has shown are known or reasonably anticipated environmental carcinogens. Those lists can be accessed at www.iarc.fr and www.ntp. niehs.nih.gov.

LAPTOP COMPUTER STUDENT ORIENTATION All students of Lead-Deadwood High School will be issued a computer for school use. Before a returning student in grades 10-12 may be issued a computer, they must turn in the Lead Deadwood School District Computer Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) signed by both the student and parent/guardian. This form can be found on the school website or picked up in the high school office. New students and 9th grade students and their parent/guardian must attend an orientation meeting outlining the technical aspects, program policies, acceptable use, and guidelines for use of the computer and complete all required documentation.
