Bodie Kent was talented guitar tutor, musical instructor, musician, friend, and neighbor. Bodie passed away from chronic liver disease at his home. He was strong until his time came to leave this world. “Softly and tenderly” the Lord called him to be with his mother, Sharon, in heaven. Bodie was a kind and gentle man who loved sharing his musical talent with his students. He loved guitar music and music theory and loved his animals and pets. #MeToo Movement Still Going Strong By Jennifer S. Frank Lynn, Jackson, Schultz & Lebrun, P.C. One only needs to turn on the television or pick up a newspaper to hear a new story involving allegations of sexual harassment by yet another famous or prominent individual in the United States, resulting in a growing list of persons accused of sexual misconduct. By now, everyone has heard of the #MeToo Movement which began in October 2017 as a backlash against sexual harassment and sexual assault going on in Hollywood and the entertainment industry. #MeToo has clearly drawn attention to (and demonstrated the widespread prevalence of) sexual harassment, especially in workplace – and is certainly still going strong. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency responsible for interpreting and enforcing federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination, has put in a lot of effort over time to bring attention to workplace harassment. For example, the EEOC’s successful training program “Respectful Workplaces” was launched in October 2017 and teaches skills for employees and supervisors to promote and contribute to respect in the workplace. In April 2019, the EEOC released its Fiscal Year (FY) 2018 Enforcement and Litigation Data, including sexual harassment data, which showed an increase in charges and in EEOC activity: • 7,609 charges of employment discrimination were filed with the EEOC alleging sexual harassment, an increase of more than 13% from FY 2017. This is the

highest level of sexual harassment claims since FY 2011; • The EEOC filed 66 harassment lawsuits, 41 of which included allegations of sexual harassment. This shows a 50% increase in suits alleging sexual harassment over FY 2017; • Overall, the EEOC recovered nearly $70 million for the victims of sexual harassment through litigation and enforcement, up from $47.5 million in FY 2017; • Hits on the EEOC’s sexual harassment page of its website more than doubled in the past year, as many individuals and employers sought information on how to deal with workplace harassment. In today’s workplace landscape, there are steps that all employers can take to combat sexual harassment in their workplaces, even before it arises. There are opportunities to become more compliant through welldrafted policies and procedures, improve the workplace environment where employees become more respectful and more aware, and improve organizational culture which ultimately governs the type of behaviors that are expected and acceptable. This can be done through proactive training, ongoing advice and counsel at early stages of an emerging issue or problem, providing multiple reporting procedures in the case of a complaint, and having a true “open door policy” where all employees feel supported in bringing their concerns forward without the fear of retaliation. In this way, employers who take these proactive steps with the assistance of their counsel are much less likely to have the EEOC knocking at their proverbial door. Sponsored Content
