Go Green with Your Pet Environmentally conscious lifestyles are a way of life for many people. But while men and women may look to hybrid cars or energy-saving appliances to reduce their carbon footprints, few may know they can go green with their pets, too. Pet care is likely not the first thing pet owners think of when they look to tweak their lifestyles to make them more environmentally friendly. But there are many ways pet owners can take a more eco-friendly approach to caring for their pets. • Buy environmentally friendly toys and supplies. Many businesses now produce products with the environment in mind, and manufacturers of pet products are no exception. When buying toys and supplies for your furry friends, look for products made from recycled materials or natural fibers. Such products may even be packaged in post-consumer materials like recycled paper. • Buy in bulk. Buying pet items in bulk can be both eco-friendly and convenient. Buying in bulk means less frequent trips to the store, which conserves fuel and saves you time. Buying in bulk also means less packaging, which conserves resources and leads to less plastic and cardboard finding its way into landfills. • Keep a watchful eye on your pets. Pets that are allowed to roam free can have an adverse impact on local wildlife. For example, cats that are allowed out to roam your yard and the yards of your neighbors may be on the prowl for birds, and killing birds can have a negative impact on

local ecosystems. Each bird death caused by a cat is preventable if pet owners simply keep their feline friends inside, which veterinarians note is good for the average cat’s life expectancy. In addition, keep your dog on a leash when taking Fido for a walk or to the park, as dogs also are prone to some questionable behavior when off the leash and out from under the watchful eyes of their owners. • Embrace organic foods. Many humans are turning to organic-only diets, and there is no reason why pet owners can’t let their four-legged friends in on the fun. Certified organic pet foods are created without the use of any harmful pesticides, hormones and artificial ingredients, making them healthier for both the family dog and the planet on which he roams and chases his frisbee. • Clean up in an eco-friendly way. Cleaning up after your pet has done his business is perhaps the least enjoyable part of pet ownership. But dog owners can make picking up their pooches’ poop more eco-friendly by using biodegradable poop bags in lieu of plastic bags from the grocery store or elsewhere. Plastic bags will sit in landfills for years to come, while biodegradable bags will decompose over time. Cat owners can also make cleaning up after their pets more eco-friendly and healthy for their furry friends by using environmentally friendly cat litters that don’t contain strip-mined clay or clay sediment that can contribute to feline respiratory problems. There are many ways eco-conscious pet owners can reduce their carbon footprints without expending much effort at all.

Pets of the Week Snow

Snow is a husky, malamute, and boxer mix. She is about 5 months old. She is very, very, very shy and needs to go to a home with another dog that can be her pack leader and teach her dog behavior. Once she gets comfortable she is sweet and loving. Potty training is going well and she sleeps all night long. She is spayed, microchipped, and up to date on shots.

Bella and Missy

Bella and Missy are 2 and 4 year old. We would like them to be adopted together. Nobody can be sad when there is a pug around- these two keep us laughing all day! They are friendly with most other dogs, cats and people.

Pistachio

Pistachio is about a year old and has been neutered and updated on shots. He is very scared at the shelter. Because he is used to living outside, a place with a barn might be the best solution for him.

Spark

Spark is a little shy, but definitely a cool looking cat. He is content to hang in his kennel, patiently waiting for his new home.

Cataract surgery common and effective As men and women age, their risk for cataracts increases. Starting at age 50, cataract risk rises, and that risk only grows more significant as men and women get older. The National Eye Institute predicts that, by the year 2050, 50.2 million Americans will experience cataracts. The lens of the eye is normally clear, but as a person ages, the lenses can begin to cloud and lead to impaired vision. Cataracts can cause blurry vision and increase the glare from lights, affecting how a person can manage daily activities. Cataracts also may make it more difficult for eye doctors to examine the back of the eye during routine visits to detect conditions such as age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy. Eye experts routinely recommend cataract surgery when cataracts interfere with daily activities, such as driving, watching television or even reading medication bottles. Surgery is a safe and common way to treat cataracts. The American Optometric Association says cataract surgery involves the removal of the natural lens of the eye, which is replaced with an artifical lens. This clear, plastic intraocular lens, or IOL, requires no special maintenance and is designed to properly focus. In many cases, the eye doctor will make a small incision in

Yearly eye exams can reveal more than just vision trouble More evidence points to the importance of routine eye exams, not only to pinpoint potential conditions of the eye, but also to serve as windows to diseases that affect the entire body. Now more than ever it is essential to make and keep annual eye exams, as they can help to reveal the first signs of serious ailments. Doctors from around the world say dozens of diseases — from certain cancers to arthritis to high blood pressure — can show symptoms in the eye. Under the watchful and knowing gaze of an eyecare professional, individuals can get early diagnosis and begin treatment promptly. According to Dr. Roy Chuck, chair of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center, there are many systemic diseases that can be seen in the eye. In addition to the conditions mentioned, jaundice can indicate liver disease while retinal detachment and bleeding in new blood vessels may indicate hypertension. By looking at the

color of the cornea, some doctors can tell if a patient has elevated levels of cholesterol. Many people have had their eye doctors be the first healthcare professional to detect the presence of their diabetes. If an ophthalmologist suspects an underlying medical condition, he or she will likely refer men and women to their primary care doctors for a more thorough examination. Going to the eye doctor can do more than ensure your vision is sharp. It’s a lifesaving decision for many people who have major health conditions diagnosed through the eyes.

the lens, called the lens capsule, are not touched. Afterward, the IOL is placed in the lens capsule. If the cataracts have advanced and phacoemulsification is not an option, the eye doctor will have to find another way to remove the lens.

The IOLs used may be monofocal, fixed-focus, accommodating, and multifocal lenses, and which type of lens is best for a patient’s needs will be determined by the eye doctor. Cataract surgery may only take 15 minutes, though patients will likely spend more time at the surgical facility to allow for prep time and post-operative evaluation. Recovery will involve the use of medicated eye drops several times daily, and a protective eye shield should be used while sleeping. As the eye recovers, a special pair of post-operative sunglasses are required to protect the eyes from bright light. Eye doctors also advise patients to avoid strenuous activity, including exercise, for at least the first week of recovery. Water splashed in the eyes can cause infection, so swimming should be avoided and caution should be taken when bathing or showering. All About Vision says it can take several weeks for the eye to heal sufficiently. If both eyes require surgery, doctors will often wait one to three weeks before performing surgery on the second eye. Painting Your Subfloor

aybe you aren’t quite ready to decide on a floor type or perhaps you’re looking for a quick fix to rejuvenate a living space. Painting your subfloor is a simple project that can transform your room.

foot traffic. Use an exterior paint that is made to take on tough weather conditions. This will be a stronger, more durable option. You also can use a polyurethane coat to seal in the paint. If you choose to do so, be sure you are working in a ventilated area and try to find an environmentally friendly version of the sealant.

Remove Your Carpet

This is actually a multi-step process because removing carpet isn’t as simple as rolling it up and taking it to the dump. You also have to remove the carpet strips around the perimeter of the room. look around your neighborhood in the spring will likely reveal a plethora of petunias brightly blooming. Get a little closer and experience one of the flower’s most definitive characteristics — refreshingly vivid fragrance.

Petunias are also wildly popular for their ease planting and maintenance, which means you’ll get to enjoy a season of bright, beautiful flowers without having to break your back.

Choosing Your Variety There are more than 100 varieties of petunias, and even more considering options for hybrid plants. Grandiflora and Multiflora are two of the most popular types of petunias, despite their distinct differences. The Grandiflora produces large flowers that are perfect for hanging baskets and window boxes. The Multiflora is more compact and produces smaller flowers. Typically, they are bunched together to produce vibrant pops of color in a landscaped area or flower garden.

What Petunias Need

So you need petunias to punctuate one of your outdoor areas with rich, striking colors. Here’s what it needs

from you, according to the University of Minnesota Extension: • Location with plenty of light — five to six hours of good sunlight per day • Decently draining soil conditioned with organic matter, such as peat moss or leaf compost • Thorough watering once per week — enough to soak the soil to a depth of about 6 inches

Here are some tried and true plating tips from the University of Minnesota Extension: • Wait until the soil warms to about 60 degrees and the danger of frost is gone. • Follow the spacing instructions on your flowers’ packaging.
