Wellness in the Workplace
In an era of rapidly rising medical costs, more employers across the nation are taking an interest in the health of their employees. Some companies are spending up to 20 percent of their bottom lines on healthcare coverage for their workers. Increases in medical costs and new stipulations within the Affordable Care Act have left many employers looking for ways to cut down that percentage. But instead of simply telling employees they need to improve their well-being, companies are developing innovative ways to make healthy living a fun, collaborative experience.
You’re Being Watched Biometric screenings examine a person’s blood pressure, cholesterol, body-mass index and other factors. These tests allow medical
professionals to pinpoint and develop plans of action for potential health issues down the road. Comes can use this information to identify strategies for their health and wellness programs. Having such accurate baseline data for employees across the company helps decision-makers set new goals, track their employees and refine processes as they go.
You’re Being Rewarded As companies get more serious about their health programming, they are implementing incentive-based policies that align their cost goals with the wellness of their workers. Sleep your way to Better Health
A re you bright-eyed and bushytailed today or beat down and just plain bushed? Being chronically tired to the point of exhaustion translates to decreased performance in nearly every physical and mental activity. If we do not recharge our brains and rest our muscles, our body is not given the chance to fully recover from various activities. Sleep plays a critical role in our health across immunity, metabolism, memory, learning and other vital functions.
Sleep & Learning Researchers at the Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School are conducting studies that suggest various sleep stages are involved in the consolidation of different types of memories and that being sleep deprived reduces one’s ability to learn. You’d probably guess that the better rested you are, the more likely you are to focus and learn new information. But what about after you learn? Slow-wave sleep, which is defined as deep, restorative sleep plays a signification role in processing and consolidating newly acquired information, according to Harvard’s sleep researchers. REM sleep, on the other hand, is necessary for our ability to consolidate
the memory of how to perform repetitive tasks.
How to Get More Sleep In today’s 24/7 world of information-sharing, socializing and working, sleep is getting harder to come by. The fact is, our bodies still require an ample amount of sleep to most effectively get through the day. How much sleep depends on your age. A study by the National Sleep Foundation found that sleep needs vary across populations. The National Sleep Foundation offers these tips for maximizing your mattress time: • Choose one consistent bedtime and maintain it, even on the weekends; • Avoid napping late in the afternoon if you want to catch your Zs at night; • Daily exercise is beneficial, as long as it doesn’t cut into your sleep time; • Design a sleep-friendly room with the noise and darkness levels best suited to your personal sleep preferences; and • Reach out to your physician if sleep deprivation is impacting your daily life. © FOTOLIA

Dealing with the Blues
W e’ve all had a bad day. It’s how we bounce back from negative experiences that helps us move forward and achieve our life goals. And the key to bouncing back is having a strong support group around us. People who are lonely have more physical and mental health problems than those who feel connected to others, according to a new report in Psychological Science. The report details the importance of creating and maintaining positive relationships in the workplace, family and other social circles. Without people to interact with and vent to, we can become even more inclusive and shut ourselves out to the external world. This behavior has been proven to be harmful to our confidence levels and abilities to cope with negative situations.
The Science Behind Loneliness Scientific research shows the positive impact that strong social lives can have on our overall health. One Colorado State University study found that the more positive social interactions people with
depression had, the more improvement in the symptoms they experienced. Other research in the journal Health Psychology has shown that you’ll eat less healthful food if you frequently eat by yourself, and you are more likely to be physically inactive the lonelier you feel.
Make New Friends Your community is likely ripe with opportunities to meet new people and build new relationships. Try visiting local businesses to establish rapport with business owners and workers. Even if you don’t actually interact with these types of connections on a daily basis, the conversation and camaraderie can be enough to make you feel more comfortable in other social situations. Other ideas for making new connections include joining a professional association, enrolling in a cooking class at your local community college or signing up for a gym membership. You will find like-minded people, leading to common ground and easy, comfortable conversations.

Cut down on the Candy!
The next time you’re suffering from a case of the “sweet tooth,” remember one word: moderation. Overconsumption of sugar is a major problem that leads to obesity, diabetes and other preventable chronic diseases. And while numbers are on the decline, about 13 percent of adults’ daily calories came from added sugars in things like cake and regular soda, according to new government statistics. Naturally occurring and added sugars are the two types of the sweet stuff that have found their way into the American diet. The major sources of added sugars in American diets are soft drinks, candy, cakes, cookies, pies, fruit drinks, dairy desserts and cereals. The U.S. Department of Agriculture identifies the following foods as some of the main culprits in added-sugar items, as well as the calories from the added sugar per serving. • Carbonated soda, 12-ounce can, 132.5 calories • Canned fruits in heavy syrup, 1 cup, 115.4 calories • Jelly beans, 10 large, 78.4 calories • Non-fat fruit yogurt, 6-ounce container, 77.5 calories • Milk chocolate, 1 bar, 77.4 calories
Sugar Terms Not sure if the treat you’re about to indulge in contains sugar? Here are some terms that you may find on food labels, according to the American Heart Association. • Brown sugar • Corn sweetener • Corn syrup • Fruit juice concentrates • High-fructose corn syrup • Honey • Invert Sugar • Malt sugar • Molasses • Raw sugar • Sugar molecules • Syrup
Combating Your Cravings The American Heart Association recommends limiting the amount of added sugars you consume to no more than half of your daily discretionary calorie intake. For most American women, this means no more than 100 calories (six teaspoons) per day. For most men, no more than 150 calories per day (nine teaspoons).

Stress and your Heart Health
Your smile is our priority Knowledge is knowing when to make changes in your daily life for better overall health. Jackson Dental strives to provide all our patients with the most comprehensive and current treatment that is available, including many levels of periodontal disease treatment: such as laser pocket disinfection, laser curettage and the only FDA approved LANAP laser treatment. Check our website or call for more information. Remember you choose the state of health you want to be in. There are two main disease processes in the mouth: Periodontal disease and decay (cavities). Both processes are bacterial in nature. The microflora of the mouth is made up of many types of bacteria. Some that affect the teeth and some that affect the gum tissue. If there is an imbalance of bacteria in and around the gum tissue and there is a host response from your body, you are likely to experience some level of gingival inflammation and infection. How well we control this level of inflammation depends on your ability to keep the numbers of bacteria in check. If your body isn’t healthy or your mouth isn’t healthy there is likely to be an imbalance that we can see in your mouth. What we start to see is the affects of these bugs on your bone and connective tissue that hold your teeth in your mouth. This ultimately, is called periodontal disease. It is a very serious infection that is not felt by the patient and can lead to tooth loss. Tooth loss is not the only problem with having periodontal disease. Research shows many links to gum disease (bacteria in your mouth) and your overall health: such as heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, cancers, low birth weight babies and others. It is estimated that up to 85% of the US population has this infection of the gum tissue. It is so important to have regular check ups to have assessments made on your teeth and gum tissue. Early intervention is the best way to reduce high levels of bacteria and to keep the bacteria level down before you have lost bone and gum tissue. Your mouth is the portal to your overall health. Make sure you get your dental examination at least twice yearly and reduce bacteria at home at least 2 x day with brushing, flossing and an antiseptic mouth rinse.
Always accepting new patients.
How do you react to a stressful situation? Do you shut down or lash out? Take to unhealthy habits to deal with the pressure building up inside of you? How you handle life challenges can have a major impact on factors that have been proven to negatively impact your heart health. Stress may affect behaviors and factors that increase heart disease risk, including high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, smoking, physical inactivity and overeating. So step back and take a deep breath — for your heart’s sake.
Overall Body Impact Bodies react to stress in different ways. You may experience a headache, back strain or even stomach pains if you’re stressed out. Your energy level can be greatly reduced and your sleeping patterns disturbed.

Dealing with Stress Managing stress is a challenge, but a necessity if you hope to be a picture of good health. A few studies cited by the American Heart Association have examined how well treatment or therapies work in reducing the effects of stress on cardiovascular disease, and the results have shown positive links. The best place to start when dealing with your stress is a qualified professional. Speak to your physician about how you’re feeling. They will be able to refer you to a specialist who can offer effective treatment or preventive strategies.
YOUR HEALTH | HEART BASICS
Understanding Blood Pressure
Y ou may know your blood pressure numbers, but do you truly understand them? Typically recorded as two numbers written in a ratio, such as 117/76 mm Hg, your blood pressure measurement is a vital one that can alert physicians of an issue going on with your body, specifically your heart. The American Heart Association recommends a blood pressure screening at your regular healthcare visit or once every two years if your blood pressure is less than 120/80.
The Numbers John H. Jackson, DDS • Christopher J. Jackson, DMD
All of these factors can set off a chain of events that leads to a potentially compromised cardiovascular system. When you’re stressed, your body releases adrenaline, a hormone that temporarily causes your breathing and heart rate to speed up and your blood pressure to rise. Depending upon how long you’re stressed, your body may experience this set of circumstances off and on for days at a time. And although the link between stress and heart disease isn’t clearly defined by organizations like the American Heart Association, chronic stress may cause some people to depend on unhealthy lifestyle habits, like drinking too much alcohol, which can increase your blood pressure and may damage artery walls.
Systolic: The top number of your blood pressure reading represents the pressure in the arteries when the heart beats, or when the heart muscle contracts. This is the higher of the two numbers. Diastolic: The lower of the two numbers, this bottom measurement records the pressure in the arteries between heartbeats, which is when the heart muscle relaxes and refills with blood.
Typically more attention is given to the top number as the major risk factor for heart disease, especially for people over 50 years old. This systolic figure generally rises steadily with age because of many factors, including plaque buildup and increasing stiffness of larger arteries. Healthy Measurements A normal blood pressure reading, defined by the American Heart Association, is less than 120/80. Numbers that may signal a warning sign for a heart issue are measured and defined as the following: Prehypertension: 120-139/80-89 Hypertension Stage 1: 140-159/90-99 Hypertension Stage 2: 160 or higher/100 or higher Hypertensive Crisis (Emergency Care Needed): Higher than 180/Higher than 110 High Readings A single high reading does not necessarily mean that you have high blood pressure. However, if readings stay at 140/90 or above over time, your doctor will likely recommend a treatment program that may include lifestyle changes and prescription medication.

Mental Health & Heart Health
The connection between mental and physical well-being is being researched at great lengths by the medical community. Researchers are busy trying to find tangible connections between mental health and heart health. Research shows there could be physiological links, the American Heart Association reports, between a person feeling down and their efforts in seeking relief from smoking, drinking or eating fatty foods. The same biological and chemical factors that trigger mental health issues and could also influence heart disease.
Depression While the American Heart Association states that there
is no firm research linking stress to heart disease, there are signs pointing to it as an additional risk factor. Being stressed or unhappy can increase hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can both impact your blood pressure and heart rate. You should monitor yourself and your loved ones closely, especially those dealing with rehabilitation and recovery from heart disease or stroke. The American Heart Association reports that having heart disease or a stroke can cause anxiety or depression, which can get in the way of rehab or other aspects needed to regain physical health. An estimated 1 in 10 of Americans ages 18 and older report depression. The American Heart Association cites

Tame that Temper! When is the last time you had a timeout? Just because the days of terrible twos and kindergarten are long gone doesn’t mean a timeout can’t help you keep your temper under control. In fact, taking a few minutes to calm down and diffuse a situation can help you reduce stress that can be harmful to your physical and mental health. The next time you get peeved by someone cutting you off in traffic or a home repair that drains your bank account by a few hundred dollars, send yourself to the corner. And don’t reemerge until you’re feeling calm and collected.
Self-Control The Mayo Clinic recommends that people find a calming force in their lives that can help them better handle stressful situations, which are a natural part of life. This can range from actions that you take or people with whom you surround yourself. Techniques such as making a concerted effort to think before you speak can help you work through issues in your head before projecting onto others, for example. Or allow yourself to vent to others, but only after you’ve had a chance to calm down and express your concerns in a clear manner. These types of actions can be particularly important if you are in a position of leadership in your company or are a parent. Set a positive example for your employees and children to create a culture of collaboration and constructive communications.
Exercise Physical activity has been proven to reduce stress levels that can cause you to become angry, according to the Mayo Clinic. If you’re feeling stressed or angry — or even if you’re not — a brisk walk or jog can help you keep your cool. It also can serve the same purpose as a timeout, giving you the time you need to consider alternative ways of handling a stressful situation. You can find clarity during exercise. A half-hour jog can open your eyes to what is going on around you, helping you realize that other people are probably having problems, too.

studies that show that up to 33 percent of heart attack patients end up developing some degree of depression.
What to Do Start by discussing how you are feeling, both physically and mentally, with your healthcare provider. He or she will be able to help, or refer you to the most appropriate care or provide the best place to start. It may take a combination of counseling and medication to help deal with depression. Patients may be taught methods of dealing with relaxing and relieving stress, including breathing exercises, meditation or a focus on healthier lifestyle changes.
Family Workout Time Exercise has never been more important to protecting children from incurring preventive illnesses later in life. Childhood obesity rates have tripled since the 1980s. At this rate, one-third of children born in 2000 or later will suffer from diabetes in their lifetime. Get up and dance! Firing up the music is a great way to keep your family in shape. Research has shown that music benefits our health in a variety of ways. A brisk walk is a great way to burn calories, too. You only need a pair of com-
fortable shoes, maybe a stroller for the littlest ones. Even your dog can get in on a family walk!
Join a Center Paying for a membership can unlock a portal of activities for your family, from swimming and dancing to basketball and karate classes. You and yours can enjoy the convenience of taking part in the activity of your choice, all without having to worry about battling the outdoor elements.

YOUR HEALTH | KNOW THE FACTS
Signs of heart failure - Get Help! activities, such as shopping, climbing stairs, carrying groceries or walking may be a warning sign. These instances can occur when the heart can’t pump enough blood to meet the needs of body tissues. The body diverts blood away from less vital organs, particularly muscles in the limbs, and sends it to the heart and brain. This makes it harder to exert physical energy to perform daily tasks.
W hile you’re not afforded the convenience of crystal clear warning signs for heart failure, there are many symptoms that may appear. From shortness of breath to fluid buildup, it is important to educate yourself on the most common indications. Any one sign of heart failure may not be cause for alarm, but according to the American Heart Association, if you have more than one of the symptoms outlined below, you should report them to a healthcare professional and ask for an evaluation of your heart. If you have been diagnosed with heart failure, it’s even more important for you to keep track of symptoms and report any sudden changes to your healthcare team.
Fluid Buildup
Shortness of Breath Are you running out of breath performing activities that you used to consider routine? Maybe you’re waking up suddenly, struggling to breathe? These factors can be caused blood backing up in the pulmonary veins because the heart can’t keep up with the supply. Other related warning signs include wak-
ing up feeling tired, anxious or restless, or having to prop up your body while resting because of difficulty breathing. Take these signs seriously and consult your physician for their expert

Symptoms of fluid buildup include swelling in the feet, ankles, legs or abdomen or weight gain. One telltale sign may be an inability to fit on your shoe because of significant swelling. As blood flow out of the heart slows, blood returning to the heart through the veins backs up, causing fluid to build up in the tissues. Additionally, the kidneys © FOTOLIA are less able to dispose of sodium and water, also causing fluid retention in the tissues. These factors show up as swelling in your body and should be checked by a medical professional.

Pets of the Week Tippy
Tippy came in with 3 siblings, they are Malamute/Husky/Boxer mixes, born on Jan. 2, 2015. None have been fixed yet, but they were given their first set of shots: distemper and Bordetella. They are a little scared, but super sweet puppies and super cute. Tippy is female.
Gabby
Gabby is a purebred Mountain Cur. She has some hunting experience (mountain lion), but needs obedience training. She is three years old and is used to living outside in everything but extreme cold.
Lizzy
Lizzy is a very sweet, older cat. She is about 11 years old, spayed and vaccinated. She is still quite active and is a fairly small cat.
Star
Star is about 6 years old. He has the most beautiful blue eyes. He is a unique looking cat who loves to be loved. He’s part Siamese, but he’s not talkative. He’s just LOVELY.
Make a difference for life. Adopt a shelter pet today! All Pets are spayed or neutered before they leave the shelter. Lost pets and strays fill the shelter, can you help with time or donations? Some have to choose between food for family or food for pets. To discourage animal abandonment, a Pet Food Pantry is available at the shelter for those who need it. Won’t you help us stock the Pet Food Pantry? Just drop off food at WHHS. Immunize, spay/neuter, shelter from the cold, and LOVE your pets!
